        Metamorphoses

In the book containing the first catalogue raisonne of his body art, an extraordinary, signed presentation from Serge Diakonoff, additionally signed by his principal body art model, Miralda Rochat, the centerpiece-a striking, original 319 x 484 mm, (12.56 x 19.06 inches), signed, dated, mixed media drawing in gouache and pen & ink, carefully executed in 8 colors with wash and extending over an entire 2-pages spread of the preliminaries, the presentation to Christian Lefebvre (Nicole Lefebvre, the performance artist is featured in a body painting work on page 95). PROVENANCE: From Christian Lefebvre in Paris and signed in full by Diakonoff and Rochat, each with a different pen; dated by Diakonoff at the bottom, March 1985. The added Rochat signature is quite unusual. PRESENTATION DRAWING: The original artwork isn't a variation of one of his familiar presentation drawings and it anticipates some of his late 80's 'joy of' paintings. The 8-colors drawing shows a stage design with 2 figures set against a far ranging plain in the midst of an inchoate metamorphosis, the plain pictured as a colossal divinity's leg outstretched, the foot pushing against the inner margin of the picture, a sheered volcanic mass near the center, in the far background, a sky alight with energy and muscular clouds spiraling forth. The creator-avatar is an especially striking figure, a full-page design in a costume incorporating body art, including a portrait on the torso. CONDITION DETAIL: Pages: clean and bright, some edge bleed from the painting to 2 adjoining preliminary pages. Boards: clean and bright. Binding: tight and true, front hinge just beginning to crack. Book Jacket: some rubs: Upper Jacket with minor spotting, 2 open vertical tears at the bottom, 2 cm and ragged with slight loss, 1 cm and nearly clean: Lower Jacket with 2 closed, clean vertical tears at the top edge, .5 and 1 cm. FORMAT: Publisher's deluxe brown linen boards in sewn binding (not the common green cloth) with white letters and color photographic jacket, photograph on the upper jacket is a 1984 work with his principal model, Miralda Rochat, also shown on page 57; endpapers reproduce a set design for "La Belle au Bois Dormant" (Sleeping Beauty). SUMMARY: A survey of Diakonoff's 1980-84 body painting works with the first catalogue raisonne (1975-84) in an appendix, all works illustrated. Diakonoff provocatively explores themes from myth and psychological archetype, in part by transposing mythic figures and landscapes onto the human figure & face, symbolically joining the unconscious to actuality and vice versa. SIZE: 31.9 x 24.2 cm or 12.5 x 9.5 inches. PAGINATION: Confirmed complete. 143 pages with 317 illustrations, text with 4 b/w illustrations; suite of 109 excellent, full color photograph reproductions, some with facing details, 102 are full-page, 7 double-page; the catalog raisonne with 203 captioned, full color thumbnail reproductions of exhibited or performed body painting works in chronological order (pages 128-142); publishing information. Principal text: transcription of a 1983 Diakonoff interview and panel discussion led by journalist, Jacques Bofford for Radio Suisse Romande. An excellent biographical note with b/w portrait photo of the artist is on the jacket flap. DIAKONOFF: born in Geneva, Switzerland, his first exhibition in 1953, he has since exhibited extensively. Inspired by the African masks he collected, he created his first body painting works in 1975 and has since become a leading body artist, working in collaboration with his principal model, Miranda Rochat, his theme-the dialogue between the conscious and unconscious and past and present myth. About body painting he has said, "Peindre sur la peau, c'est encore peindre. Le modele est le support de sa propre representation, la toile, intermediare entre le peintre et son modele, a disparu": Painting the skin of the body is without question painting. But the canvas that is an intermediary between the artist and the model has now disappeared. IMAGES: by request.

Introduction to Raymond Chandler's Unknown Thriller: The Screenplay of Playback [Rare Signed Copy]

New York: The Mysterious Press, 1985. First edition. Wrappers. Fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of this introduction (mild bend at upper left corner), in the Publisher's original printed gray wrappers, SIGNED BY ROBERT B. PARKER on the title page; a rare copy of this separately printed introduction -- later printed in the book titled "Raymond Chandler's Unknown Thriller: The Screenplay of Playback" (1985). A Fine copy of perhaps the rarest Robert B. Parker available to the market when, as is this copy, SIGNED BY ROBERT B. PARKER. QUITE RARE.

Eighteen Portraits. Original lithographs by Maurice Grosser.

Vincent FitzGerald and Company, New York 1985 - First Edition, limited, one of 120 copies only printed on handmade "Crisbrook" paper by J.P. Green, each copy numbered and signed by both artists, Virgil Thomson and Maurice Grosser. Lithographs pulled at the Printmaking Workshop by Jennifer Lynch, Agnes Murray and Holly Sears, music in Virgil Thomson's hand printed by John Hutcheson from negatives made by Gail Alt, letterpress in handset Garamond by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress, calligraphy by Jerry Kelly. Page size: 17 1/2 x 14 inches. Bound: loose in clamshell box of blue Tussah Silk and Ganryo Hikizome paper by Gerard Charriere and Carol Joyce, title in silver stamped on black label. A truly distinguished work from Vincent FitzGerald & Company, a collaboration between the composer Virgil Thomson and his partner, the painter Maurice Grosser. The left side of each two- page spread is the music, in Thomson's hand (at age 90), and on the right side is one of Grosser's first lithographs, done at age 83. The two friends collaborated before on Thomson's operas, and these portraits reflect mutual friendships of such people as Theodate Johnson, who sang Thomson's operas, and the writer Jane Bowles. The musical portraits were written at various times from 1929, and have all been newly rewritten for piano for this edition. Grosser's black and white lithograph portraits, so strong and fresh, are not only a perfect complement to the music but evoke very clear musical tones of their own. Published on Thomson's 90th birthday celebration, it reflects a truly an inspired collaboration and is a magnificent book. See an Image. [Attributes: First Edition]

A Collection of Franz Wright Poems and Letters to a Fellow Poet

1985-1992. A collection of 36 Typescript and Holograph Poems from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Franz Wright, with nearly half of the poems Signed or Inscribed, along with five Autographed and Typed Letters Signed to a fellow poet. Wright, the son of poet James Wright, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his book, Walking to Martha's Vineyard, matching his father who won the prize in the same category in 1972, and making them the only father and son to accomplish this feat. The poems in this collection were written between 1985 and 1992 during which time Franz Wright published several books. A great many of these poems were published in those books but appear here in an earlier form with alternate verses and different titles. Several of the poems could not be identified and may be unpublished. The accompanying letters sent to his correspondent are surprisingly genial and optimistic considering Wright's tendency toward darker themes in his work. In them, he encourages his correspondents writing, speaks about his own love of poetry, comments on one of his father's poems, and talks about his recently established sobriety. Nearly all the poems and letters are in near fine or better condition though a few have a bit of wear to their extremities.A remarkable and notable collection of poetry and letters from this Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, giving new insight into his life, his relationships, and his writing process. .

El mundo poetico de Braulio Arenas containing Rimbaud's El Barco Ebrio

Ediciones Dos Amigos Buenos Aires: Ediciones Dos Amigos. 1985. One of 60 copies on Arches from a total issue of 62, numbered and signed by the publisher, Samuel Cesar Palui, on Ingres cream paper. Illustrated with two original full-page aquatints by Aida Carballo that were editioned with the aid of Mirta Ripoll. The text, which which contains seven original poems by Braulio Arenas in addition to one translation by Braulio Arenas, was hand set and printed letterpress by Ruben Raul Lapolla in 18pt Garamond in two colors, red for the poems' titles and initial letters and black for the text. The poem by Rimbaud, "El Barco Ebrio" ("Le Bateau Ivre") has been translated from the original French to Spanish by Braulio Arenas. The tan Ingres text pages of Rimbaud's poem are loosely inserted as pp. 17-24 in the verses of EL MUNDO POETICO DE BRAULIO ARENAS. Page size: 12-15/16 x 9-1/16 inches and 10-9/16 inches, 40pp. Bound: loose as issued in green wrapper, printed with publisher's initials on front fold- over tab, housed in red cloth and blue paper box with author and title printed on front and on spine, fine. The aquatints are lovely. The first is of a child floating a paper boat and the second a surreal cityscape. The image of the child harmonizes perfectly with the verse making the connection between the free expressions of the young with the efforts of the Surrealists. Braulio Arenas (1913-1988) Chilean poet, short story writer and dramatist, was awarded the National Prize for Literature in 1984. Considered a key Chilean surrealist, he was one of the founding members of the Mandragora (Surreal group) in 1938. See an Image.
