[Illustrated Manuscript, "The Corporate Bhagavad Gita"]

[Seattle], [ca. 1985?]. Square 4to; 8.5" x 8.5". Grey glossy paper-covered boards. 40pp. of a 120pp blank journal used. Holograph text with 48 original watercolor and ink illustrations. Light wear, rubbing. Very good or better. A unique artists' book in which Coffin, who was a noted Seattle area artist and animator, illustrated the first, second, and third discourses of the Bhagavad Gita with scenes from the corporate board room. Officers and employees emerge as the leading characters in this classic spiritual text. The paintings are executed in a bright, primary pallette and are variously dark, dramatic, and disturbing. Includes several full-page illustrations, with my more vignette and interspersed with the text. A compelling and decidedly contemporary take.

Los Angeles, CA: University Of California Press, 1985. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Los Angeles, CA: University Of California Press, 1985. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 240 pages. Exhibition monograph on subject. One of the greatest books on indigenous tribal art of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Should not be confused with the Softcover Edition, which was published simultaneously with it. Published in a tiny first print run as a hardcover original by a University Press, with funding from the National Endowment for The Humanities. The Hardcover Edition was issued both with and without a DJ, a typical practice of University Press publications. As such, describing the absence of a DJ as "missing" is erroneous. The First Edition is now very rare. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held at the UCLA Museum of Cultural History from October 8 through November 25, 1985. Presents, in an austerely elegant volume, some of the greatest tribal art the world will ever see. The exhibition&#39;s (and this book&#39;s) perspective is insightful, brilliantly realized, and has been immensely influential. It also has universal significance, as the focus of all other ceremonial tribal art (in Africa, the Americas, and other parts of Asia) is The Dead or rather, the passage of the living from this life to the afterlife, the transmutation of "body" into "spirit", a journey that those they leave behind mark with utmost respect, ritual, and solemnity. Here are "elaborate, frighteningly beautiful ritual art objects relating to the dead in the cultures of Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Contains photographs of this funerary art and essays on the ancestral arts of Nias, Batak, Dayak, Toraja, Biak, Paiwan, and Yami" (Publisher&#39;s blurb). The book also touches on similar (and possibly, related) art in the Lesser Sundas and Moluccas, the Philippines, and Madagascar. The art itself, beautifully photographed, is to die for: Powerful in their worldview, exquisite in their attention to detail, and unsurpassed in their intuitive apprehension of The Beautiful as The Sacred. They help remind us, and we need to be reminded, that art before our secular Modern Age was about the larger-than-life (as it were) and the sublime. One does not have to be a believer to appreciate and be moved by this great art; if anything, one&#39;s particular religious beliefs will tend to get in the way of such appreciation. And with the exception of a few memorial artists (like Christian Boltanski on the one hand and Art Spiegelman on the other), the beautiful-as-sacred has been permanently banished in contemporary art. An absolute "must-have" title for art book collectors. <b><i> This title is a classic. This is one of very few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. The few copies of the Hardcover Edition available online command between $3000 and (an incredible) $15, 000. Almost all other copies available online are the Softcover Edition (which sell for between $350 and $500, rightly so because they are also rare). This is a reasonable and lovely alternative. A very rare copy thus. </b></i> 300 plates. One of the seminal art books of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0930741056.

Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West

Random House, 1985-02-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. New York: Random House, 1985. First Edition, First Printing with statement of "First Edition" on the copyright page and proper Random House number code "24689753" denoting a first printing. In original dust jacket, with price of $17.95 in tact. Hardcover in Good Condition, in a Good dust jacket. While there are no apparent library markings, it would appear that this book is an ex-library copy. There is partial evidence of a stamp removal from the title page, as well as an area to the top side edge of the page block where it appears a stamp was neatly filed off, and replaced end papers. Beyond that, there is no solid proof that this was a copy belonging to a library, but it seems that if it did, the evidence was professionally removed. The text is unmarked; the pages show light wear and light signs of use with an occasional finger mark or light dog-eared crease to a corner. The boards and spine are edge worn, with rubbed corners. The spine has a light shelf lean. The jacket shows faint staining to the verso, not visible from the exterior. The outside of the jacket shows surface wear and rubbing; the jacket does not appear trimmed but appears to have been cut a hare short during the printing process. The dust jacket comes mylar-protected and presents very well. A rare first edition, scarce in the original dust jacket.

William Morrow, New York 1985 - Uncorrected bound galleys of the author's first book. With the photographic postcard laid in, as issued. Comments on this galley by Powers: "It really took me back to see the picture of this one. My first, back when I didn't even know that there was such a thing as a bound galley. I remember they were very proud of running that photo on the front; this was back before the big trend of making fancy bound readers copies that look almost like a finished paperback. Although these galleys were far and away the roughest I've ever had (not a page without errors), there are no substantial textual differences of any kind. The pagination difference resulted from the bound galley coming directly from the uncut long galley pages, so that there are endless half-pages of text, reset for the final."
