        THE PLANT. PART 3

Bangor, ME: Philtrum Press(1985). First Edition, A set of loose galley sheets (7-1/2" x 25") of the third part of King's novel-in-progress published privately in an edition of only 200 copies as a Christmas greeting and not offered for public sale. This is the only set of galleys for this book we have seen, and it contains numerous corrections by King himself, sometimes signed, including at the head of the title: "Copy-edit complete./Steve King." Above that is a typed note about the text signed by Michael [Alpert], who was involved with the printing of the book. It appears that King's comments are photocopied from an original. We have priced this as a scarce issue of the book photocopied from the copy King corrected and not as the original copy that King corrected. If we are wrong, someone will be very happy. And if we are not wrong, we can still comfortably assume that even advanced King collectors do not have this., loose sheets, Very Good with some expected wear

Hard Traveling. Etchings and Woodcuts [by] DeLoss McGraw. Introduction by David Hickey with selections from writings by John Steinbeck, Woody Guthrie, Grady Harp, Gary Soto, Arthur Miller, Shakespeare, and the Holy Bible

San Diego:: Brighton Press. 1985. hardcover. 350 x 287 mm. 13 7/8 x 11 1/2 inches (sheets). Folio, contents loose. as issued in clamshell box with original painted binding by McGraw on. front cover. 10 full color hand-painted etchings and woodcuts, 4. additional three-dimensional cut-out images in plastic sleeves. Hand-. painted folding case with tie and button. Like new.. Limited edition of 100 numbered copies, signed by the artist McGraw – BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED. This piece does not follow the usual tradition of fine printing. Namely, the book is a work of art featuring brilliant colors and a usual format. Thereby the sheets are loose, a printed text followed by artwork created by McGraw. Then one finds the cut-outs and they are fresh and unique, not conformed to the shape and presentation of traditional books. The art is lively and rich with color. The aim of the text is to celebrate the journeys of migration or travel in hard times, especially such as those that inspired the writings by Woody Guthrie and John Steinbeck. Editions from the Brighton Press are highly sought after and due to the highly limited editions, their books sell out quickly. “In preparing for this project, DeLoss McGraw immersed himself in the music and writings of Woody Guthrie, heard firsthand accounts from the townspeople of Okemah, and read The Grapes of Wrath. The result, Hard Traveling, is an intimate and personal gathering of writings chosen by the artist to explore the theme of leaving home.” – (press notes). “The most important feeling for me … came on the day the finished book arrived and I unwrapped it for a look. The sense that I had then was that I had been given the rare opportunity to make art twice. One always feels pleasure and pride at finishing a poem, but opening my Brighton Press book for the first time gave me feelings of pleasure and pride that were even greater than when I had written the poems. My poems had been elevated into a whole new esthetic realm by being so beautifully presented. The wine was the same, but when it was served in a beautiful vessel, it tasted a whole lot better, and nobody creates a more beautiful vessel than Brighton Press.” – C. G. Hanzlicek (poet). . 1

The New York Trilogy: City of Glass, Ghosts, The Locked Room (Early typescript copy, inscribed by Auster in 1985)

Sun and Moon Press, New York 1985 - A bound copy of an early typescript for Paul Auster's New York Trilogy. The title page bears Auster's holograph presentation: "For Paul Lichter and Sarah Jones - / Their personal copy, / - with love - / Paul Auster / June 6, 1985." Numerous non-holograph notations throughout, the most interesting of which are two separate corrections that clearly show that the titles of the last two segments of the trilogy were originally swapped (the change is made both on the segment title pages and the table of contents). Very likely this a copy that Auster had bound for himself prior to the publishing deal made with Sun and Moon Press, as there is no publisher's imprint or editorial markings; and interestingly the three sections of the trilogy are dated 1982, 1982-83, and 1983-84 respectively, showing that Auster completed the entire work--and had probably envisioned it as a single book--well prior to its publication as three separate volumes between 1985-86. Very Good plus in a black snap binding, with clear Mylar covers. A presentation copy of an early corrected version of what is now generally regarded as Auster's masterpiece. In a black custom quarter-leather clamshell box. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Pirates (Original screenplay for the 1986 film, shooting script with notations)

Paris: Carthago Films, 1985. Shooting script, undated, for the 1986 film. With substantive working notations in variously colored holograph ink on a few pages. Noted as copy No. 7 in red ink at the top right corner of the first blank. One of Polanski's most underrated efforts, in many ways a companion to "The Fearless Vampire Killers" in that it is a beautifully executed, comedic valentine to the genre films of Polanski's youth. A France-Tunisia co-production, shot on location in Tunisia, Malta, and Seychelles, with Walter Matthau as a Captain Thomas Bartholomew Red and David Kelly as ship's surgeon. Untitled red vinyl wrappers, bound in red tape as issued. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Polanski and Brach. 134 leaves, mechanically reproduced. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus bound internally with three gold brads.

Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman!" Adventures of a Curious Character, as told to Ralph Leighton. Edited by Edward Hutchings

New York W. W. Norton & Company 1985 - Octavo. Original red cloth backed boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly cracked between the front free endpaper and the half title. An excellent copy in the bright jacket with just a few minor nicks at the top edges. First edition, first printing and a beautiful copy in excellent condition. The orange dust jackets and boards of this book are notoriously prone to fading, but this one is remarkably bright and attractive. Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman is one of the most popular scientific memoirs of all time. In a series of humorous and poignant short stories the famous physicist describes his childhood and developing interest in science, his college education and time on the Manhattan Project, and his career at Cornell and Caltech. Among the memorable episodes are Feynman's description of an anatomical chart as a "map of the cat", his safe cracking escapades at Los Alamos, and his exasperated reaction to winning the Nobel Prize. Uniting all the stories is Feynman's thoughtful approach to the scientific method and its meaning in the modern world. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The War of the Rebellion: a compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies

Wilmington, North Carolina and Harrisburg, Pennsyl: Broadfoot Publishing Company and The Historical Times, 1985. Reprint Edition. Hardcover. Fine. (Image depicts only two of the 128 volumes.) The finest used, complete set we've ever seen, being a one owner-only collection, straight from the publisher, Broadfoot Publishing Company, for The Historical Times. Stored in a temperature-controlled, dehumidified environment. All 128 volumes (actually, 130 volumes, but two were never published). Broadfoot Publishing Company's first reprint of the original, true First Edition improves upon that original by having used acid-free paper, and so the interiors are remarkably bright, clean and unmarked. Black buckram cloth covers, very sturdy, and with sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spines. Serial and volume numbers are at spine bottoms for easier arrangement and collation. Considered to be the definitive, must-have-for-collectors set of historical works regarding the Civil War. Over 130,000 pages overall. Some very light smudgings and dust soilings to a few top edges, else in virtually gift-quality condition. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
