"Winter Cardinal" Limited Edition Artist's Proof with original "Remarque" (framed) print

Brougham, ON: Marc Barrie, 1985. 1st Edition. Framed. Fine. Author signed. ORIGINAL CARDINAL HEAD "REMARQUE" ACRYLIC PAINTED ONTO THE PRINT - RARE. Size: Print: 20 x 11.25 inches Glass frame: 27 x 19.5" This limited edition print titled "Winter Cardinal" edition numbered 450 signed and numbered prints and 40 artist proofs. This print is Artist Proof #12 / 40 however, this copy has an Original "Remarque" on the print; it was painted onto the print, in acrylic paints, by Marc (and is initialed by Marc in pencil). Many years ago Marc did a number of 'Remarques' on certain prints; being a miniature original painting, this print is of much greater value. An original miniature original painting today, would cost $600 plus just for the remarque. The print done in 1985 is of greater value in it's on right as one of his earlier LE prints., The artist's proof also included an original painted Cardinal's head at the bottom centre and initialed by Marc Barrie, "The Northern Cardinal (male and female) takes away the bleakness of those long dark winter days and lifts my spirits everytime I see one. It's my favourite bird to paint." Marc Barrie is recognized as one of Canada's finest artists in the field of high realism nature art. Barrie was born with an innate artistic gift, which he constantly develops through hard work and determination. "I am entirely self taught, and have had no formal art education. I learned by my own mistakes, and by being determined to make each painting better than the one before. It is an endless education and journey, and each painting always teaches me something new." Marc has been a professional artist for over 30 years, and has achieved international recognition from nature admirers and art collectors alike. His original artworks and many published limited edition prints are valued in private and corporate collections in over thirty countries around the world.

The two friends collaborated before on Thomson's operas, and these portraits reflect mutual friendships of such people as Theodate Johnson, who sang Thomson's operas, and the writer Jane Bowles. The musical portraits were written at various times from 1929, and have all been newly rewritten for piano for this edition. Grosser's black and white lithograph portraits, so strong and fresh, are not only a perfect complement to the music but evoke very clear musical tones of their own. Published on Thomson's 90th birthday celebration, it reflects a truly an inspired collaboration and is a magnificent book.
See an Image.
A Collection of Franz Wright Poems and Letters to a Fellow Poet

1985-1992. A collection of 36 Typescript and Holograph Poems from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Franz Wright, with nearly half of the poems Signed or Inscribed, along with five Autographed and Typed Letters Signed to a fellow poet. Wright, the son of poet James Wright, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his book, Walking to Martha's Vineyard, matching his father who won the prize in the same category in 1972, and making them the only father and son to accomplish this feat. The poems in this collection were written between 1985 and 1992 during which time Franz Wright published several books. A great many of these poems were published in those books but appear here in an earlier form with alternate verses and different titles. Several of the poems could not be identified and may be unpublished. The accompanying letters sent to his correspondent are surprisingly genial and optimistic considering Wright's tendency toward darker themes in his work. In them, he encourages his correspondents writing, speaks about his own love of poetry, comments on one of his father's poems, and talks about his recently established sobriety. Nearly all the poems and letters are in near fine or better condition though a few have a bit of wear to their extremities.A remarkable and notable collection of poetry and letters from this Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, giving new insight into his life, his relationships, and his writing process. .

L'Oeil Du Jazz [The Eye Of Jazz]

Paris: Filipacchi, 1985 SIGNED, dated and inscribed by the book's designer at the title page, " to Michael Cuscuna, friendship always, Francis Paudras, 86". The true first edition, preceding the first English language edition by four years, a collection of Leonard's masterful , near-iconic b&w photographs which celebrate with dignity the great musicians of jazz. A gifted French designer and artist, Paudras (1935 - 1997 ) is perhaps best known for his book ,To Bird With Love, which he designed, published and co-authored with Charlie Parker's widow, Chan Parker; a lavish, limited edition photo biography of and homage to the great altoist , highly prized by collectors, it is generally considered one of the most beautiful of all jazz books. In 1986 Paudras also produced a very handsome book on Bud Powell, La Danse Des Infidels, which drew heavily on his close personal relationship with the great pianist, to whom he was extraordinarily devoted, and for whom he acted as de facto guardian and unofficial manager during Powell's troubled stay in Paris during the late 50's, and early 60's. The book's inscribee,Michael Cuscuna, is a Grammy Award winning pop, soul and jazz record producer and co-founder of Mosaic Records,a company which for more than 25 years has set the standard for limited edition jazz reissue sets, with some 200 releases many of which are highly prized by collectors. Cuscuna is also an esteemed jazz discographer, notably for Blue Note Records where as a consultant, producer and reissue specialist, he has overseen the release of much valuable archival material. Near fine in publisher's black cloth, top board is somewhat bowed, else near fine tight, clean, unmarked in a like dust jacket, unclipped, touch of wear to head of spine and panel edges, flaps are lightly curled. A very uncommon book signature with a grat jazz association. J1523.. Signed. True First Edition. About Near Fine/Near Fine.

Introduction to Raymond Chandler's Unknown Thriller: The Screenplay of Playback [Rare Signed Copy]

New York: The Mysterious Press, 1985. First edition. Wrappers. Fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of this introduction (mild bend at upper left corner), in the Publisher's original printed gray wrappers, SIGNED BY ROBERT B. PARKER on the title page; a rare copy of this separately printed introduction -- later printed in the book titled "Raymond Chandler's Unknown Thriller: The Screenplay of Playback" (1985). Apparently, only a few, perhaps as few as 35, copies of this early printing of book's introduction were issued. Copies are extremely scarce to the market and copies signed by Parker are RARE, making this one of the rarest editions of Parker's works with signed copies rarer still. A Fine copy of perhaps the rarest Robert B. Parker available to the market when, as is this copy, SIGNED BY ROBERT B. PARKER. QUITE RARE.

Aldus Manutius and the Development of Greek Script & Type in the Fifteenth Century with Original Leaves from the First Adline Editions of Aristotle, 1497; Crastonus' Dictionarium Graecum, 1497; Euripides, 1503; And the Septuagint, 1518. [Leaf Book]

Sandy Hook, CT: Chiswick Book Shop Inc. 1985, edition limited to 200 copies. () xiv, 115pp. Fine. Folio. Red cloth with gilt titles to spine and front board. Matching red cloth slipcase. Both fine with a small bump to edge of slipcase. Four original leaves from the Aldine Press tipped in at rear of book. All leaves in fine antiquarian condition with some age-toning to edges. Two leaves with inked number (likely page number) to top edge of recto and final leaf with two marginal notes in Greek. Limited to 200 copies printed and bound by the Meridian- Stinehour Press. A fascinating study of the development of Greek type at the Aldine press, including a sample leaf from works printed in each of the 4 sets of Greek type developed by the press. The text of the book includes extensive commentary, illustrated throughout with photographic reproductions of Aldine pages, and culminating, of course, with the 4 original leaves illustrating each type. Two of the leaves are from incunable volumes from the press (June and December 1497), one leaf from the editio princeps of Euripides, and one leaf from the Septuagint printed in February of 1518. The Aldine Press introduced many innovations to early printing, including italic type and the popularization of smaller-format books that were easier to use than the massive folios issued from many incunabular presses. (Disbound and Dispersed 184).

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1985 Important Presentation & Association Copy. 8vo. 365 pp. First Edition Inscribed By Paul Theroux to Nobel Prize winning Trinidadian author V.S. Naipaul on the front free endpaper, 'For Vidia, To mark twenty years of friendship - if you only knew how your good influence has kept me on the straight and narrow, with love, Paul' and additionally Signed by Theroux on the title-page. Theroux's friendship with Naipaul had spanned decades, Theroux penning, "V.S. Naipaul: An Introduction to His Work", in admiration of his mentor, and to mark their friendship's decline and fall, "Sir Vidia's Shadow: A Friendship Across Five Continents". A near fine copy, (slight bump to the top of the front board), in 1/4 turquoise cloth over grey paper covered boards, black and silver titles to the spine in a bright, fresh pictorial dustwrapper with light overall use. An extraordinary presentation & association copy and now a piece of literary history as the original appearance on the rare book market of three early Theroux titles [Fong and the Indians, Sinning with Annie; and V.S. Naipaul: An Introduction to his Work.] inscribed to Naipaul & his first wife Pat, precipitated a series of explosive exchanges between Theroux & Naipaul that helped dash their 30 plus year friendship into so much literary dust. This was Naipaul's own copy of this collection of essays, and it includes Theroux's excellent portrait of Naipaul which he, Naipaul did not entirely appreciate. Their relations had turned bitter about the time that Theroux discovered that Nadira, Naipaul's new wife had arranged to sell his Theroux books. Notwithstanding the ensuing tumult, the wonderful inscription tells volumes about the relationship of these two accomplished writers who shared so much greatness together. In the end, the pluses will count for much more than their bruised egos. Certainly, the most important copy, ever.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

Clyde Arbuckle's History of San Jose

San Jose, CA: Smith & McKay Printing Co., 1985. 1st, a beautiful and probably unique copy of this classic history, in full leather, all edges gilt, with a foreedge painting. The grey leather is gilt-stamped with a fleur device on front and back, has devices and title on spine within five raised bands, and the name of the man for whom the book was bound, Robert Minge Brown, stamped on front. Brown (1911-1994) was a remarkable man, whose achievements as a Boy Scout led Admiral Byrd to invite him along on an expedition to the South Pole when he was twelve! His mother wouldn't let him go. He enrolled in Stanford University at 15, graduating in 1931. He earned a law degree in 1934, and practiced his specialty in public utility regulation until 1980. He served as a trustee of Stanford from 1965-81 and as board president from 1971-76. He was elected a fellow of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1973, and was an active sportsman for his whole life, in track, tennis, rugby and golf. He died in Albuquerque at age 83. Condition: the boards are bowing; there is slt. chipping of the gilt (which was put on over the foreedge painting), probably from handling it to see the painting. (It is best seen with the pages canted at a 45 degree angle.) The painting is of a San Jose of yesteryear, perhaps about 1890. Overall vg.. First Edition. Hard Cover.
