An attractive copy of this leaf book, one of 159 copies printed by Patrick Reagh. A finely-printed leaf book containing a page from the press of German printer, Johann Zainer. Zainer was active in Ulm in the latter quarter of the 15th century where his press printed between 170 - 180 editions. The leaf here is from Hugo Ripelin's Compendium theologiae veritatis, printed on Zainer's press between 1478 and 1481. An attractive incunabular leaf, paired with a letterpress history of the press and three plates reproducing other works by Zainer (Disbound and Dispersed 183).

      (1985). Large octavo. (2)ff. A hand-lettered manuscript of Blake’s poem by calligrapher and miniaturist Marie Angel. Written on vellum in blue, gold, and black ink. A finely detailed bird perches on the opening initial, while a stunning color illustration, also by Angel, appears at the end of the poem. This full-page vignette depicts the darkening green described by Blake, as the sun descends and people return to their cozily lit homes for the evening. In a plain paper wrapper, which is covered by another, heavier wrapper of light blue Japanese paper, the whole loosely tied together at the spine with a white ribbon. Off-setting from adhesive in binding to endpapers, otherwise fine.

Both fine with a small bump to edge of slipcase. Four original leaves from the Aldine Press tipped in at rear of book. All leaves in fine antiquarian condition with some age-toning to edges. Two leaves with inked number (likely page number) to top edge of recto and final leaf with two marginal notes in Greek. Limited to 200 copies printed and bound by the Meridian- Stinehour Press. A fascinating study of the development of Greek type at the Aldine press, including a sample leaf from works printed in each of the 4 sets of Greek type developed by the press. The text of the book includes extensive commentary, illustrated throughout with photographic reproductions of Aldine pages, and culminating, of course, with the 4 original leaves illustrating each type. Two of the leaves are from incunable volumes from the press (June and December 1497), one leaf from the editio princeps of Euripides, and one leaf from the Septuagint printed in February of 1518. The Aldine Press introduced many innovations to early printing, including italic type and the popularization of smaller-format books that were easier to use than the massive folios issued from many incunabular presses. A near fine copy, (slight bump to the top of the front board), in 1/4 turquoise cloth over grey paper covered boards, black and silver titles to the spine in a bright, fresh pictorial dustwrapper with light overall use. An extraordinary presentation & association copy and now a piece of literary history as the original appearance on the rare book market of three early Theroux titles [Fong and the Indians, Sinning with Annie; and V.S. Naipaul: An Introduction to his Work.] inscribed to Naipaul & his first wife Pat, precipitated a series of explosive exchanges between Theroux & Naipaul that helped dash their 30 plus year friendship into so much literary dust. This was Naipaul's own copy of this collection of essays, and it includes Theroux's excellent portrait of Naipaul which he, Naipaul did not entirely appreciate. Their relations had turned bitter about the time that Theroux discovered that Nadira, Naipaul's new wife had arranged to sell his Theroux books. Notwithstanding the ensuing tumult, the wonderful inscription tells volumes about the relationship of these two accomplished writers who shared so much greatness together. In the end, the pluses will count for much more than their bruised egos. Certainly, the most important copy, ever.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

Collins were unable to fulfil orders for the hardback edition, so subsequently bound up an additional 500 copies from stripped paperbacks, and these are referred to as second state copies. Second State copies are distinguised principally from the first state by being a few mm. shorter and are bound in pea-green "Linson" embossed paper-cloth rather than dark green, slightly shiny buckram. The lithographs were editioned by the Printmaking Workshop of Paul Blackburn, and each is numbered and initialed in the margin by Grosser. A collaboration by two long-time friends, with Thomson's musical portraits accompanied by Grosser's lithographic portraits of the same subjects, including themselves, Jane Bowles, the singer Theodate Johnson, Mark Beard, et al. The dates of composition of Thomson's portraits range from 1929 to the year of publication, with many of the earlier works being newly rewritten for piano for this edition.

        Clyde Arbuckle's History of San Jose

      San Jose, CA: Smith & McKay Printing Co., 1985. 1st, a beautiful and probably unique copy of this classic history, in full leather, all edges gilt, with a foreedge painting. The grey leather is gilt-stamped with a fleur device on front and back, has devices and title on spine within five raised bands, and the name of the man for whom the book was bound, Robert Minge Brown, stamped on front. Brown (1911-1994) was a remarkable man, whose achievements as a Boy Scout led Admiral Byrd to invite him along on an expedition to the South Pole when he was twelve! His mother wouldn't let him go. He enrolled in Stanford University at 15, graduating in 1931. He earned a law degree in 1934, and practiced his specialty in public utility regulation until 1980. He served as a trustee of Stanford from 1965-81 and as board president from 1971-76. He was elected a fellow of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1973, and was an active sportsman for his whole life, in track, tennis, rugby and golf. He died in Albuquerque at age 83. Condition: the boards are bowing; there is slt. chipping of the gilt (which was put on over the foreedge painting), probably from handling it to see the painting. (It is best seen with the pages canted at a 45 degree angle.) The painting is of a San Jose of yesteryear, perhaps about 1890. Overall vg.. First Edition. Hard Cover.

Hand written number 40 of 150 Limited Edition copies and SIGNED has been printed by hand on two Albion presses, from the original wood blocks in Betty Wyatt's collection. The text is handset in Original Janson Antiqua. This is the first use both of a paper made specially for The Florin Press at Biddenden by Barcham Green, and of the device engraved by Simon Brett.       New York: Con-Ker Fine Art, 1985. One of 250 pieces. A stunning Art Deco-style hand mirror designed by Erté and cast using the lost wax technique at the Joel Meisner & Co. Foundry. Erté, whose fashion images adorned the pages of Harper's Bazaar from 1932 to 1937, was one of the most prominent French illustrators of the Art Deco period. Although he is best known for his fashion illustrations and magazine cover designs, Erté also enjoyed designing and sculpting three-dimensional objects from an early age. Erté explains in his artist's statement: "Since my boyhood in fashion, theater and the decorative arts, I have designed three-dimensional pieces. As a medium of expression, I have always enjoyed sculpting as one of my favorite means of expression." This mirror fits perfectly within his stylish aesthetic: the back of the piece is graced with a glamorous woman dressed in the fashion of the 1930s, wearing draping strands of golden beads. Long earrings and an elegant coif surmounted by a large golden comb complete her ensemble, as she gazes out at a vignette of a sailing ship on aqua-blue seas. Golden clouds frame the ship, almost like a theatrical curtain, and the scene is topped with the phrase "Toutes Voiles Dehors" ("All Sails Up"). The mirror's face is round with elegantly beveled glass. Including the slender, tapered handle, the piece measures approximately thirteen inches in length by seven inches in width. Housed in a stately wood case lined with green satin and velvet, this fine example of Erté's decorative work is in very fine condition.

      Bangor, ME: Philtrum Press, 1985. First Edition. loose sheets. Very Good with some expected wear. A set of loose galley sheets (7-1/2" x 25") of the third part of King's novel-in-progress published privately in an edition of only 200 copies as a Christmas greeting and not offered for public sale. This is the only set of galleys for this book we have seen, and it contains numerous corrections by King himself, sometimes signed, including at the head of the title: "Copy-edit complete./Steve King." Above that is a typed note about the text signed by Michael [Alpert], who was involved with the printing of the book. It appears that King's comments are photocopied from an original. We have priced this as a scarce issue of the book photocopied from the copy King corrected and not as the original copy that King corrected. If we are wrong, someone will be very happy. And if we are not wrong, we can still comfortably assume that even advanced King collectors do not have this.

      JYD Ltd, 1985. A large elephant folio sample book issued by JYD Limited of the great collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. This volume has the Imperial Wallcoverings designed for royalty and here is made available (for a price) to those who desired it. 102 pages (note pages are numbered variously with some of the smaller wallcovering samples counting as a separte page; in other cases they are not counted) It measures 46.5 cm x 33 cm. The Art Institute of Chicago notes such sample ooks are difficult to find once new productions of fabric lines change (see their 1985 note in the Museum Quarterly) It has a handle so it could have been carried by a sample salesman.

One of 15 deluxe "state proof" copies (this being No. 14) SIGNED by both the artist, Alan James Robinson and the binder, David Kelm on the colophon page. Bound in full alum tawed pigskin with an inset bas relief paper cast illustration to the front board. Illustrated with five drypoint etchings and seven wood engravings. The state proofs for both the etchings and the woodblock engravings are enclosed as is a drawing and an extra suite of prints. Both book and prints are enclosed in a specially designed oatmeal cloth covered fall back box. A beautiful example of modern book arts. 42 pages plus non-numbered leaves for the illustrations, 8 x 11 inches, printed at Wild Carrot Letterpress on T.H. Saunders hotpress watercolor paper. Drypoint etchings were printed on hand made Gampi Torinoko.

Hardcover. <p>German book illumination between Romanesque and Gothic</p><p>The impressive early Gothic splendor handwriting from the heyday of Saxon book painting includes nine pages of considerable size: a complete calendar with a rich architectural decoration and lovingly designed zodiac signs and two magnificent picture pages with a total of five representations to the life of Christ, Annunciation, Birth, death on the cross, Christ&#39;s Ascension and the maiestas Domini.  The individual scenes are executed in an expressive fragment of Deckfarbenmalerei from bright gold background.  The extraordinary calendar reflects the harmonious African meeting of a changing understanding of art in a tense and lively expression. </p> <p>The Zackenstil</p><p>The Golden Hildesheim calendar is an excellent example of the style of the so-called spikes.  This stand-alone form style of the 13th Century combines two styles, namely the emotionally influenced Byzantine art with the early Gothic western and lively, sometimes even dramatic expression.  Characteristic of the teeth are hard-edged style, brilliant color garment shapes to which the term goes back against a spacious gold background. </p> <p>Origin and destination</p><p>The manuscript was in the middle of the 13th Century, a tradition-rich Location: in the scriptorium of the Benedictine monastery of St. Michael in Hildesheim, founded by Bishop Bernward (993-1022 tenure, canonization in 1192) and since 1985 together with the Hildesheim Cathedral part of world heritage by UNESCO.  Destination was the elegant pen Servatius in Quedlinburg. </p> <p>A first in the history of facsimile editions</p><p>The facsimile of the Golden Hildesheim date section represents a first in the history of the facsimile: For the first time incorporated in the original manuscript for the protection of the miniatures Silk curtains were also modeled in facsimile. </p> .

Calligraphy by Yvette Rutledge. Spine sunned to a light green, otherwise in near-mint condition. Printed to commemorate the centennial of the publication of the great American classic, this is an impressive, aesthetically pleasing production that combines a newly updated authoritative text with Moser&#39;s inspired woodcuts. Experts at the University of California&#39;s Mark Twain archive painstakingly compared Twain&#39;s manuscript to the first edition of the text, correcting errors in wording, spelling, and punctuation and restoring an omitted passage to Chapter XVI. Printed by Harold McGrath in Centaur and Arrighi type on Mohawk Letterpress archival paper, this in a big, attractive, and readable edition that is built to last. The woodcuts include both eerie, atmospheric scenes and revealing portraits of characters. Huck is shady but charming, the Widow Douglas affected and pompous, and Aunt Polly grimly good. Jim is depicted, not as Huck&#39;s light-hearted companion, but as a serious man well aware of the gravity of his position as a runaway slave.

While uncalled for with this publication, in this set, Mr. Moser has signed each print in the folio. This is one of only 4 known examples of this set complete with the folio of 49 prints each individually signed by Barry Moser; Mark Twain&#39;s famous tale in a stunning presentation with forty-nine wood engravings by Barry Moser. Publisher&#39;s full green morocco gilt by E. Gray Parrot. Triple gilt-rule borders on covers, with the dates 1885-1985 stamped in gilt within roundel in the center of the upper cover. The spine is lettered in gilt, with paste paper linen end-sheets by David Bourbeau. Printed on Mohawk Letterpress, accompanied with a signed suite of the 49 prints, (same images as the engravings in the book) all encased in a linen chemise. Book and print folio in slip-case .

One of 15 Artist Proof copies, with one extra suite of the woodengravings, plus a suite of 15 state proof engravings, plus one rejected engraving, plus three proofs of portrait etchings of Twain, plus 2 pencil drawings of frogs by the artist, plus one original watercolor of the jumping frog, each signed and numbered by the artist, plus a copy of the prospectus. Additionally, there is an inscription by the artist on the front flyleaf below a pencil sketch of Jim Smiley (character in the story whose engraved portrait appears on the fourth page) by the artist. The regular edition was limited to 250 copies and is bound in green paper wrappers. All editions are printed on Saunders paper in Centaur and Arrighi types at Wild Carrot Letterpress with the assistance of Arthur Larson. The 15 woodengravings printed by Harold Patrick McGrath. Page size: 6 x 8.5 inches. Bound by Daniel Kelm: full undyed Oasis with onlays of the frog in repose -- before the jump on the front panel and after the jump on the back panel, with doublures showing the frog in mid-jump. Onlays in green oasis of the frog jumping are on the front and back pastedowns. Housed in linen clamshell box with pull-out portfolio for extra suites and the book. This Cheloniidae edition of the JUMPING FROG is from MARK TWAIN&#39;S SKETCHES, NEW AND OLD (1875). It contains three versions of this notorious and celebrated tale: the original, the version translated into French (inadequately so, according to Twain) and the version "restored to the English after martyrdom in the French" by Twain. The afterword, "The Private Printing of the &#39;Jumping Frog&#39; Story" by Samuel Clemens, first appeared in the NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW (1894).
