        Soldier Soldier

Hutchinson, UK 1985 - 1st Edition 1985. Original hand corrected manuscript for the book 'Sodier Soldier'. Tony Parkers book is a record of frank interviews with serving soldiers of all ranks and their partners. Many of the interviews were made while they were on active service in Northern Ireland. The result is a unique record of the British professional soldier. The book is a honest and frank account of what it is like to be a soldier, or the wife of one, in the Army of today. Parker talks about their lives within a closed and set-apart society, and they illuminate the human face behind the modern military machine as it has never been revealed before. This final draft is hand corrected signicantly thoughout the pages by the author. This a one off item. Also includes a dedicated copy of the published book to his wife Margery Parker and a letter from the then Queen Mother via her Treasurer thanking the author for his book and their meeting they had in Colchester. Part of a small collection of books from the family. Tony Parker's classic insight into prison life. Tony Parker (25 June 1923 - 3 October 1996) was an oral historian whose work was dedicated to giving a voice to British and American society's most marginalised figures, from single mothers to lighthouse keepers to criminals, including murderers. Manuscript is very good++ and bright. Contents very good. Book and letter are very good++. More images can be taken upon request. Ref 9548/9539 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Selected Manifestations; Being an Unofficial Collection of Temple Dedicatory Prayers, Revelations, Visions, Dreams, Doctrinal Expositions, and Other Inspired Declarations not Presently Included in The Official Canon of Scriptures Known as the Four Standard Works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Oakland, CA, 1985. First edition. Hardcover. 413pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Original white buckram with gilt stamped titles on front board and backstrip. Fine/Fine. & Warmly inscribed by the author on the front free end sheet to Samuel W. Taylor. Inscription reads "To: Samuel W. Taylor, with gratitude, I would be grateful for any remarks you may have, especially about the items herein from President Taylor. David M. Reay." Nice association copy. Samuel W. Taylor was a historian and writer, as well as the grandson of John Taylor.& & Laid in are two retention copies of letters sent to Reay from Taylor in 1986 and a note on embossed Taylor letterhead. Both letters address Taylor's belief that this book needed a detailed index. He writes in the first letter: "However, I have one criticism, as a professional author: - - your book is a reference volume, of value to history buffs --- except it has no index. Such a book simply must have a most detailed index. Every name, every subject must be included."& & In the personal note Taylor writes that he does not now Reay's sales plan for the book. & & Promotional materials for this book are also laid in. Promotional material includes: A press release, a 'thank you for ordering' letter, and a 'Special Offering' letter that is addressed to "Dear Brothers and Sisters."& & The compiler and author was a retired seminary teacher from California who saw a need to compile "..nearly every known revelation, vision, dream, doctrinal exposition and inspired declaration of the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve not presently included in The Doctrine and Covenants." This self-published and self-distributed work was recalled after the LDS church made its displeasure known. On the jacket's blurb the author proclaims, "Selected Manifestations is a book that belongs alongside The Four Standard Works." We have handled a handful of copies of this title over the years, but this is the nicest, as well as the only association copy. Rare.

Text printed by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress; woodengravings printed by Harold McGrath; drypoints printed by Alan James Robinson at Cheloniidae Press. The type was set by Mackenzie- Harris, San Francisco. A fine copy of one of the most elegant books from Alan James Robinson. The translation is by David Ball, Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Smith College, from the French of Symbolist and Parnassian poet, Pierre Louys, who was known for his "pagan eroticism." The re-telling of the Greek myth accounting for the birth of Helen of Troy and Polydeuces from the god, Zeus (in the form of a swan) and the nymph, Leda, by Louys is an example of such an erotic tale. It is here retold in a contemporary way while still retaining the sense of mystery so infused in Greek mythology. Robinson's mystical creatures are wild and beautiful and point the way to the many meanings of the text.& Samuel Feinstein's elegant and simple binding refers to the birth of Leda's twins as a result of her seduction - or rape - by Zeus with the two oval eggshell lacquer inlays. The blue leather of the binding works perfectly with the blue in Robinson's drypoints. The subject of much erotic art through the centuries, Leda and the Swan, is story that continues to fascinate.
