        The Convict

Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge 1985 - A short story collection, one of the author's scarcest trade books, published prior to Burke's success with the award-winning Dave Robicheaux mystery series. There was a simultaneous softcover issue, which is itself moderately uncommon, but the hardcover issue, of which this is one, is legendary in its scarcity. It has been reported that only 500 copies were bound up in cloth, most of which -- coming as they did from a university press publisher not widely distributed in the book trade -- would have been earmarked directly for libraries. Signed by the author. Fine in a fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Cunning Little Vixen - with Original Drawing By Sendak

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1985 - Cloth. First Edition, First Impression. BUT what makes this copy very special indeed is Mr Sendak has not just SIGNED the book, he has ADDED an ORIGINAL 'WILD THING' DRAWING on the title page. A unique opportunity for the Sendak fan to add more than a signature to their collection. Original Sendak drawings are hugely sought after, but here is one at a reasonable price. Book is in perfect collectable condition, and the unclipped protected jacket has two very tiny tears that are hard to spot. RARE and delightful copy, and almost certainly - with the drawing - a unique one. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Signed Ingmar Bergman Photograph

The American Scandinavian Fondation, New York 1985 - SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH OF INGMAR BERGMAN. The photograph is a large close-up portrait of the director that was published in the program for "Northern Lights Shine At Lincoln Center" which was a salute in film and live performances honoring seventy-five years of Nordic contributions to the performing arts in America and a salute to The American-Scandinavian Fondation on its 75th anniversary. Part of the evening's festivities was the awarding of the 1st Ingmar Bergman Award given to a fine or performing artist born in Scandinavia. The 1st recipient was Mr. Bergman who is without doubt one of the great artistic masters of the Twentieth Century and one of the great filmmakers of all time. Needless to say signed material by him is indeed rare. The program is loose from the covers, but is in fine condition, and the photograph is also in fine condition.         The Helga Files [The Record of the Unveiling]

1985-1987. The publisher's files (Art & Antiques magazine) for the breaking story of "The Helga Pictures," Wyeth's previously secret cache of 245 paintings and drawings, many nude, of his neighbor in Chadds Ford, PA. Included are: • the transcript of the 1985 interview with Wyeth by editor Jeffrey Schaire in which Wyeth first divulged the existence of the unknown work. 24 pages. This interview was for a story on Wyeth that Arts & Antiques ran the year before the Helga story graced their cover. • a second copy of the 1985 transcript, marked and annotated in preparation for extracting the story from the conversation. • a partial handwritten transcription of the 1985 interview, with notes on images to be used, 7 pages. • a photocopy of the press release for the 1985 article, with edits shown. • a printout of the typescript of that first article, "The Unknown Andrew Wyeth." • a printout of the typescript of the 1986 Helga article, entitled "Andrew Wyeth's Secret Paintings." • storyboard-type layout of the text and images to be used in the 1986 article. • two mockups for the layout of the 1986 article, the first draft using the title of the 1985 article and unrelated text, but with the Helga pictures; the second adding the actual title and text. • 11 proof prints and 3 photo positives of Helga images, most stamped as property of Time magazine; with a black and white proof of their cover story, which reported (as did Newsweek) on the revelation of the Helga picture a week after Arts & Antiques broke the story. • the typesetting of what seems to be the publisher's (Wick Allison's) introduction to the Helga piece in the 1986 issue, lightly copyedited. • five pieces of correspondence, 1985-1988, from the photographer on the story, Peter Ralston, to the author, Jeff Schaire. • two snapshots of Andrew Wyeth with Jeffrey Schaire, taken by Susan Gray at the 1987 showing of "The Helga Pictures" at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., along with Schaire's invitation to the preview. • three letters from Mary Adam Landa, curator of the Wyeth Collection in Chadds Ford. • the radio transcript of Helen Hayes's piece on Wyeth (for her syndicated program "The Best Years") from 1985, in which she reported on the first Arts & Antiques article, without mentioning the foreshadowed cache of secret paintings. • two file folders full of the fall-out from the Helga story: fan mail and kudos (and some snarky commentary) from other publications, galleries and individuals; press clippings; arrangements for publicity appearances and a proposal for a video; numerous clippings of cartoons and parodies. ¶ Wyeth had always been controversial: dismissed by critics and beloved by the public. The Helga story revealed the depth of this chasm, as the 1985 report of an unknown body of work by a major American painter was shrugged off by the art establishment, only to sweep the headlines of popular culture a year later, as Helga became ensconced in the public imagination. Later, the art historian John Wilmerding wrote, "Such close attention by a painter to one model over so long a period of time is a remarkable, if not singular, circumstance in the history of American art." The story of the Helga pictures was one of the most compelling and widely reported tales of an American artist since Jackson Pollock made headlines in the 1940s and 50s. This is the unique, original file that broke the story that eventually made the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines. But for some isolated dampstaining, the archive is near fine or better.

ca. 1985 - 42 x 30 cm, 29 x 21 cm (Blatt aufmontiert), Am Rand min. angeschmutzt, sonst tadell. Auf Blatt monogrammiert. Unten rechts signiert.

Bogota: Editorial Oveja Negra 1985 - First edition, limited issue of 1,000 copies. Signed by García Márquez and additionally stamped and signed by Colombian authorities on the limitation page. Publisher's white cloth, spine lettered in black; in the original white dust jacket, with a steamboat illustration to the front panel in black and yellow, photograph of the author to the rear panel, lettered in white. About near fine, with a hint of wear to the extremities, bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the extremities, minor creasing to the spine ends, a few faint hints of minor soiling to the otherwise clean panels, else fine. A beautiful copy. El amor en los tiempos del cólera (Love in the Time of Cholera) focuses on the relationship of three members of a love triangle over the course of time. Based on the author's parents' relationship, the plot is divided into six parts, with two sections each for the three main stages of life: youth, adulthood, and old age. This volume is part of an advanced printing of 1,000 special edition copies signed by Márquez, the proceeds of which were donated to the survivors of the 1985 Armero Tragedy in Colombia. During this catastrophic event, over 20,000 people died in the eruption of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, including the majority of the population of Armero, a city built on the hardened remains of an earlier eruption. Márquez, a Colombian nationalist and political activist, was living outside of the country at the time of the tragedy, having fled government persecution for his support of a radical military group. Although he did not return when he was invited back in 1982, Márquez never gave up his effort to improve the political climate and quality of life in Colombia.       Volcano, HI: Dennis McMillan, 1985. First Edition. First Edition. One of 350 numbered copies (this being No. 320) SIGNED by Newton Baird, who contributes the foreword.
