COTE D'AZUR TRIANGLE.|THE

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co, 1985. cloth of vibrant yellow, with title stamped in blue within a red triangle on front cover, housed in black clamshell box by Charr. Fitzgerald, Vincent & Co.. 12 x 14. cloth of vibrant yellow, with title stamped in blue within a red triangle on front cover, housed in black clamshell box by Charr. Not paginated. Signed, Limited Edition, one of 125 copies only on Rives BFK, all signed by the author and artist, hand set in Janson, lithographs and etchings pulled by the Printmaking Workshop of Bob Blackburn. Bound by Gerard Charriere. In this play by Harry Kondoleon, "A woman, her husband, and her husband's lover go up and down the Riviera only to be disappointed by the Riviera. The dullness of the Cote D'Azur reveals to these Americans the dullness and impossibility of love...they tire of one another and pursue sex partners at random until they are attacked and consumed by sea dragons." Mark Beard's brilliant illustrations of these "two-dimensional and ironic" characters, in their bathing suits and sunglasses, in saturated primary colors and his flat presentation, are overwhelming in their impact of the characters' vapidity. With such illustrations as Greek temple caryatids folding out to reveal the Cote d'Azur and paper doll players, Beard's art inexpressibly moves the viewer to realize the inevitable crush of the dragon of these pitiable self-centered creatures. A brilliant mixture of wit and irony with difficult and innovative printmaking techniques producing prints with highly unusual textures, especially in the final fold out, which has an effect of great richness and mystery.

Original Pencil Cover Sketch for the Dust Jacket of the Novel Linden Hills

Pencil on translucent vellum-style artist's paper. Approximately 6.5" x 11.25". Unsigned. A couple of small, faint stains, paper is a bit wrinkled, but else near fine. A rough sketch but essentially very similar to the finished art. Perhaps of most interest are Van Allsburg's penciled notes below the drawing: "I'm not sure just how high 'Linden Hill' should be. I like the great hieght [sic]. It reminds of a Dore engraving for Paradise Lost when the lord tosses Belzebub [sic] down an immense stair that runs from heaven to Hell. It also has some of the absurd sense of scale seen in Piranesi's work." [with] A copy of the first edition of Naylor's novel Linden Hills (New York: Ticknor and Fields 1985) featuring Van Allsburg's finished artwork, fine in fine dustwrapper, Signed by Naylor. Van Allsburg's original work is avidly collected. .

FACE TO FACE. TWELVE CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN ARTISTS INTERPRET THEMSELVES IN A LIMITED EDITION OF ORIGINAL WOOD ENGRAVINGS

Great Barrington, MA: Penmaen Busyhaus Publications, 1985. 14 printed folders (all but one containing a page of text and a print) and 13 loose broadsides loosely inserted in a cloth case. 4to. 14 printed folders (all but one containing a page of text and a print) and 13 loose broadsides loosely inserted in a cloth case. One of 250 numbered copies of which this has "OS" on the colophon page. This copy came from the library of Michael McCurdy, one of the participants. Twelve engraved self portraits, each numbered and signed by the artist and laid into a printed folder with a page of text about the artist. With an introduction by Leonard Baskin and a dedication print by Lynd Ward, also contained in printed folders. There is also an additional suite of the 13 signed (but not numbered) prints on different paper, for a total of 26 prints. The twelve artists are: Fred Becker, Jack Coughlin, John DePol, Fritz Eichenberg, Raymond Gloeckler, James Grashow, Judith Jaidinger, Stefan Martin, Michael McCurdy, Barry Moser, Gillian Tyler, and Herbert Waters. Lynd Ward's previously unpublished print is not signed, due to Ward's death before the project was completed. Harold McGrath printed the blocks, which were cancelled at the end of the press run. Originally issued in a box at $1600, but only a few were made as they proved too expensive to produce. The wrapper-bound edition was issued at $625. Seven of the artists have died since their contribution to this project.

War And Remembrance: Gielgud's Working Script

Np [The show was eventually transmitted in 1988-9] 1985 - Large 8vo, pp. 10, printed on rectos only, bound between yellow wrappers with a split pin. Sunned and faded, jottings on front panel and tea stain to rear. Sir John Gielgud's working script for scenes from episodes six and eight of War and Remembrance, a twelve-part television blockbuster made in 1985 as a sequel to The Winds of War. The show starred Robert Mitchum and Jane Seymour, and also featured Robert Hardy as Winston Churchill and Steven Berkoff as Adolf Hitler. Gielgud played Aaron Jastrow, and this portion of his script is extensively annotated by him, his lines often written out beside the typescript with words and phrases underlined as a guide for emphasis. An intriguing glimpse into the working method of one of the twentieth century's greatest actors.

DIE GROSSE BURGANDER CHRONIK [THE GREAT BURGUNDIAN CHRONICLE], "ZÜRCHER SCHILLING."

Faksimile Verlag, Lucerne 1985 - Sieges, Assaults, Floods, and Burnings at the Stake,All in an Imposing Pigskin Binding. 391 x 273 mm (15 3/8 x 10 3/4"). 1035 pp. (in the facsimile). Two volumes (including commentary volume in German). No. 1 OF 980 COPIES. Stately replica blindstamped pigskin, covers with multiple floral frames, small rampant lion stamped in black ink on each central panel, raised bands, brass and leather clasps. With numerous large miniatures depicting battles, sieges, assaults, floods, fires, and the burning of two unfortunates at the stake. In mint condition. The Great Burgundian Chronicle, also called the "Zürcher Schilling" (after Zurich, where it is kept), is the most original and thorough book from the period on the Burgundian Wars between the Swiss Confederation and Charles the Bold. It was executed around 1480 in the tradition of the Bern chronicles begun by Konrad Justinger in 1420, and it is the most comprehensive of all chronicles ever carried out by Schilling. The Great Burgundian Chronicle gives a unique witness as the expression of a genuine patriot and does so without the heavy censorship that characterizes later, "official," versions of the text. One of the most important features of the manuscript's illustrations is the landscape in which the events take place. It hardly ever corresponds to topographic reality, but is rather based on the artist's imagination. The viewer sees the depicted scenes from above, being treated to fanciful versions of little towns, villages, and castles, all carefully inserted into a lovely (but imaginative) landscape of rolling hills. Hunt for Red October, The

Annapolis: Naval Institute Press, 1985. Book. Fine. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 5th or later Edition. Naval Institute Press, Annapolis. [1985]. Seventh printing, SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY, from the author to the publishers' one-time dramatic rights agent, Gary Salt. Signed and inscribed on half-title page: "To Gary With gratitude and admiration for your fine (SPECTACULAR!!!) WORK on behalf of RED OCTOBER [signed] Tom Clancy." WITH A PRESENTATION PLAQUE FROM THE PUBLISHER to their film agent, a block of Lucite embedded with a replica of the book's dust jacket cover, above an embedded brass plaque engraved by the publisher with the words: "GARY SALT WITH APPRECIATION NAVAL INSTITUTE PRESS." Even though this copy is not a first edition, its importance should not be underestimated, for, as the book reached its seventh printing, it was demonstratively clear to the author and the book's publisher that Gary Salt had taken an unknown author's first book and was able to see it made into a major picture. Clancy has gone on to write a number of best sellers, some of which have been made into other major motion pictures. The late Gary Salt was indeed an important agent who is greatly missed by his widow, friends, and clients. Traces of wrinkling to bottom tips and corners of dust jacket, traces of shelf wear to tips and corners of book otherwise fine in fine dust jacket with fine presentation plaque..

        Hamlet

Rome: Delfino, (1985). Folio. 106pp. According to the colophon, this is one of 1,200 copies. Illustrated with ten color lithographs after drawings by Henry Moore. The editor, Dr. Stanley Wells, notes in the Foreword that this work reveals an "unsuspected spiritual kinship between one of the greatest visual artists of the twentieth century and the enduring genius of Shakespeare," who shared a "mythical quality, shunning literalism," and connected with the collective unconscious in their art. Bound in brick red morocco over thick beveled boards, with a rectangular gilt-metal bas relief by Moore, titled "Hamlet's Dilemma," mounted to the front cover. The book fits into a vertical sculptural stand covered with red suede. Covers lightly sunned along the lines of the stand, else fine. Because only three institutional copies of this monumental work are recorded, and given the paucity of copies in commerce, it is not difficult to conclude that the edition was not completed.

        Dance for Life

Elysian Editions, Oakland 1985 - Folio. 1/50. Photographic portfolio in blue linen box. 12 hand-pulled photogravures on Arches paper (15" x 19"), signed by Margaretta Mitchell, of women and children dancing in the style of Isadora Duncan at Berkeley's Temple of Wings. Duncan's influence is apparent in the flowing costume, the classical open-air setting and the graceful, expressive gestures. Dance teacher Sulgwynn Boynton Quitzow is the daughter of Duncan's childhood friend, Florence Treadwell Boynton who shared Duncan's vision of life lived in harmony with nature and who dedicated the Temple of Wings in 1914 to the "democracy and freedom of women." Quitzow and her daughter have kept Duncan's legacy alive for two generations, teaching dance at the Temple of Wings, where Mitchell has been photographing for two decades. Letterpress text pages: title, four pages of text (including historical photographs and text on the friendship of Boyton and Duncan in Oakland, plus a statement by Kevin Starr), a poem by Stephen Mitchell and colophon. Images: Caryatid (1970), Sulgwynn Quitzow, Spring Festival (1972), Weaving Garlands (1980), Come and Dance with Me (1970), Sisters (1977), Finale: Southern Roses (1981), Procession (1978), Victory (1978), Blessed Spirits (1978), Flinging the Veil (1978), Benediction (1977), Thanksgiving (1979). A timeless and lyrical set of b/w photographs. Fine condition. Mitchell is an author and curator in addition to being a photographer. Her work has been exhibited by museums throught the United States and she has lectured both in the U.S. and Europe. The portfolio images were included in the 1985 Oakland Museum exhibit "Dance For Life: The Bay Area Legacy of Isadora Duncan." [Attributes: Signed Copy]
