The Pyramid Tomb of Hetep-heres and the Satellite Pyramid of Khufu

Mainz, Germany: Philip von Zabern, 1985. First edition. Hardcover. vg to near fine. large Quarto. x, 90pp., 2 foldouts, 2 leaves of photographs. Original orange cloth with red lettering on cover and spine. "Reisner's explanation for the burial of Hetep-heres I (found intact, except for the queen's body, in an unmarked tomb) is contested and an alternative explanation is developed. The unfinished pyramid cutting immediately south of, and on line with, the queen's tomb was begun for a pyramid superstructure intended for Hetep-heres I, rather than having been abandoned because of her tomb as Reisner suggested. The first queen's pyramid, which was the initial member of the Great Pyramid's Eastern Cemetery, was moved to the location of GI-a so as to align with a satellite pyramid being prepared for Hetep-heres's son, king Khufu. The change in plan for the queen's pyramid may have resulted in the removal of the queen-mother's body from her original tomb..." (Author). Illustrated with b/w photographs, two foldout profiles of the pyramids and in-text drawings and plans of the excavation sites. Binding with very light wear along edges. Exlibris on inside front cover. Binding on overall very good, interior in near fine condition.

The last issue was printed in a run of more than a thousand issues and distributed in Australia, Great Britain, Europe, and the United States. As part of the Flying Nun label's 30th anniversary celebrations in 2011, all six issues of Garage were digitally re-released on their website. The covers and prices of the first two issues present here differ from those posted online, and are likely later states or variants. A rare complete run of an important music publication; as of October 2017, WorldCat does not locate a single holding in the United States.

        Photo Album]: 1970s African-American Family

Massachusetts, Washington D.C., Virginia 1985 - Oblong folio measuring 10" x 12.5". Screw bound decorative cloth. Contains 214 color photographs measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 5" x 7" with some captions, as well as one letter and a printed flyer. Near fine album with a tear on the front board and some rubbing with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an African-American couple, J. Anthony Sprow and his wife Merle, between 1976 and 1985 many of which are Kodak prints. The photos take place primarily in Fredericksburg, Virginia and Massachusetts while J. Anthony, captioned here either as John or Tony, was completing his MBA at Harvard. The Sprows were from Virginia and visited often when John was on school breaks. These photos show picnics, baseball games, and volleyball games as well as candids of family members. The couple went to parties, one flyer here is for Merle's going away party when she went to Massachusetts with John, and enjoyed the company of their families. Merle had spent 13 years working for the government with the Division of Adult Education beginning in 1969. A letter dated June 1976 written by Merle tells of her resigning from her job, presumably to follow John to Harvard where he would continue his studies. One photo shows John with his head on his desk as if he's studied too much, another shows him posing on the grounds of the University in his Harvard t-shirt. In 1978 John completed his degree and photos of his graduation ceremony are seen here. Other photos include the couple goofing off during a snow storm, buying a new Mercedes, and various trips the couple took including beach photos. After Massachusetts John and Merle moved back to Virginia where John took a job helping develop, package, and finance "large scale infrastructure projects in numerous energy markets" which involved rethinking old views of operating an energy company. An interesting collection of late 1970s Kodak photography of an African-American couple.

FREIBORD. Zeitschrift für Literatur und Kunst. 96 Nummern.

Wien, Edition Freibord, 1985-2011. 8° (9 Hefte in 4°). Mit zahlreichen Abbildungen. Ca. 95 Seiten je Heft. Orig.-Kart. Garage. No. 1 (n.d. 1985) through No. 6 (n.d., 1986?) (all published)

A complete run in 6 issues of the New Zealand music fanzine, each issue approx. 14-24 pp., edited by Richard Langston, which focused primarily on new music coming out of New Zealand and Australia, particularly bands signed to the Flying Nun Records label, including The Chills, The Clean, The Verlaines, Sneaky Feelings, Look Blue Go Purple, The Puddle, Tall Dwarfs, Scorched Earth Policy, and The Bats, other bands covered include Fetus Productions, Straitjacket Fits, The Orange, and Doublehappys, and international acts such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Lou Reed, and The Go-Betweens, with artistic contributions from Chris Knox. Illustrated throughout with photographs, collages, and drawings. 4to. Stapled illustrated wrpps., issues 1 and 2 xeroxed, issues 3 through 6 offset printed. Dunedin, New Zealand, circa 1985-1986. Richard Langston was a music journalist living and working abroad in London who returned to Dunedin in 1985 and created Garage out of his enthusiasm for the New Zealand music scene. Garage became a reference tool, especially with regards to the Flying Nun bands.
