Northampton, Massachusetts: Pennyroyal Press, 1985. No. 181 OF 350 COPIES. Printed to commemorate the centennial of the publication of the great American classic, this is an impressive, aesthetically pleasing production that combines a newly updated authoritative text with Moser's inspired woodcuts.         [Photo Album]: 1970s African-American Family

Massachusetts, Washington D.C., Virginia, 1985. Near Fine. Oblong folio measuring 10" x 12.5". Screw bound decorative cloth. Contains 214 color photographs measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 5" x 7" with some captions, as well as one letter and a printed flyer. Near fine album with a tear on the front board and some rubbing with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an African-American couple, J. Anthony Sprow and his wife Merle, between 1976 and 1985 many of which are Kodak prints. The photos take place primarily in Fredericksburg, Virginia and Massachusetts while J. Anthony, captioned here either as John or Tony, was completing his MBA at Harvard. The Sprows were from Virginia and visited often when John was on school breaks. These photos show picnics, baseball games, and volleyball games as well as candids of family members. The couple went to parties, one flyer here is for Merle's going away party when she went to Massachusetts with John, and enjoyed the company of their families. Merle had spent 13 years working for the government with the Division of Adult Education beginning in 1969. A letter dated June 1976 written by Merle tells of her resigning from her job, presumably to follow John to Harvard where he would continue his studies. One photo shows John with his head on his desk as if he's studied too much, another shows him posing on the grounds of the University in his Harvard t-shirt. In 1978 John completed his degree and photos of his graduation ceremony are seen here. Other photos include the couple goofing off during a snow storm, buying a new Mercedes, and various trips the couple took including beach photos. After Massachusetts John and Merle moved back to Virginia where John took a job helping develop, package, and finance "large scale infrastructure projects in numerous energy markets" which involved rethinking old views of operating an energy company. An interesting collection of late 1970s Kodak photography of an African-American couple.

An Archive of 2 books (Tom Lea's The Hands of Cantu INSCRIBED to Stanford President Wallace Sterling and Crume's The World of Paul Crume), each accompanied by a warm TLS to Sterling on Erik Jonsson's personal letterhead

1985 - Two books in dustjackets, each accompanied by an emotional TLS to Stanford President Wallace Sterling on Erik Jonsson's personal letterhead. A glimpse into the relationship between two American icons. J. Erik Jonsson, co-founder and President/Chairman of Texas Instruments (1951-1966), visionary Mayor of Dallas (1964-71) and noted philanthropist. In his May 6, 1985 letter (addressed to 'My dear Wally') Jonsson commiserates about their mutual recoveries from illnesses and shares Cantu (calling it 'a fine reading experience'). He advises he would like to send Sterling a second book (Crume) 'if that much reading now appeals to you.' He concludes 'Grandson Erik - and all my family - join in sending you and your lady our warmest personal wishes. We pray the health of both of you improves daily?' The accompanying book is inscribed 'For Wally - after a partially successful chase for an "exhalation of jets" - Best wishes - Erik'). Having had a reply from Sterling, Jonsson followed up with a June 20 letter accompanying the Crume book; 'The delivery of this letter. will be made by Art Charette with whom I will have the pleasure of two visits (dinner with the Charltons and him and at the office when he and Mr. Riggs are here? I was both thrilled and elated by your wonderful and kind letter.' Jonsson continues how pleased he was to learn that Sterling expects to be in his Stanford office by the fall, and at Sterling's 'renewed invitation to favorite grandson/namesake - Erik.' It is likely Sterling and Jonsson met through Cecil H. Green, a co-founder with Jonsson of Texas Instruments and a major contributor to Stanford. Green was lead donor for the construction of the Cecil H. Green Library, the centerpiece of Stanford's second comprehensive university fundraising campaign that raised $304 million during the mid-1970s, after which Sterling was known as "Stanford's man with the Midas touch". Dr. Sterling died shortly after the second letter (July 1, 1985). 'Grandson Erik' (Erik Charlton) went on to receive a Masters degree from Stanford and as of 2017 is active in several Silicon Valley businesses. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Ender's Game

New York: Tor. New York, Tor, 1985. First Edition. First Impression. First hardback edition. One of the highlights of modern speculative fiction. Ender's Game is one of those titles that always appears in the 'Best SF' lists. Many, if not most speculative works focus on the adventure of a story, some focus on the philosophy. It's rare for a work to accomplish both with such effect. The book itself is in decent shope, it has a slight lean and the jacket has light bumping to the spine tips and corners. Some toning to the block and a little odour, boards neat with just the odd mark here and there. Flaps a touch toned. A respectable copy. [Broderick & Di Filippo, p16 - SF 101 Best Novels - 1985-2010; Andrews & Rennison, p39 - 100 Must-Read SF Novels]. Cover art by John Harris [5905, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good.         THE PLANT. PART 3

Bangor, ME: Philtrum Press(1985). First Edition, A set of loose galley sheets (7-1/2" x 25") of the third part of King's novel-in-progress published privately in an edition of only 200 copies as a Christmas greeting and not offered for public sale. This is the only set of galleys for this book we have seen, and it contains numerous corrections by King himself, sometimes signed, including at the head of the title: "Copy-edit complete./Steve King." Above that is a typed note about the text signed by Michael [Alpert], who was involved with the printing of the book. It appears that King's comments are photocopied from an original. We have priced this as a scarce issue of the book photocopied from the copy King corrected and not as the original copy that King corrected. If we are wrong, someone will be very happy. And if we are not wrong, we can still comfortably assume that even advanced King collectors do not have this., loose sheets, Very Good with some expected wear
