[Great Barrington, MA]: Penmaen - Busyhaus Publications,. [1985]. Folio (38 x 28 cm). Loose sheets and bifolia laid into cloth clamshell box (42 x 35 cm) with carved wood-grained spine panel. Fine. First edition, deluxe boxed issue. Copy #5 of 250 numbered sets (200 for sale). Introduction by Leonard Baskin. Dedicatory print by Lynd Ward. Twelve artists contributed original wood-engraved self- portraits and autobiographical texts: Fred Becker, Jack Coughlin, John DePol, Fritz Eichenberg, Raymond Gloeckler, James Grashow, Judith Jaidinger, Stefan Martin, Michael McCurdy, Barry Moser, Gillian Tyler and Herbert Walker. The main illustrative component consists of the twelve original self- portrait wood engravings, each numbered and signed by the artist, plus Ward's previously unpublished wood engraving (unsigned due to his death), plus and additional suite of the engravings, with the twelve self- portraits signed (but not numbered), plus a another impression of Ward's print. The engravings were printed by Harold McGrath on two different weights of Mohawk Superfine, after which the blocks were cancelled. The original subscriber has lightly noted in pencil a typo in the colophon, and it is accompanied by several letters and prospectus/announcements documenting the long gestation period of the project. The original retail suggested price was $1600 (less to subscribers), and eventually a number of copies were offered (without the special box) at a substantially reduced price.

        Lonesome Dove

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1985. First edition of the author's Pulitzer-Prize winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Larry McMurtry on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small closed tear. A very sharp example. A love story, an adventure, an American epic, Lonesome Dove embraces all the West- legend and fact, heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers. Set in the nineteenth century, it is the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana and much more. It is a drive that represents for everybody involved not only a daring, even a foolhardy adventure, but a part of the American Dream- the attempt to carve out the last remaining wilderness a new life. "Everything about Lonesome Dove feels true . . . These are real people, and they are still larger than life" (Nicholas Lemann, The New York Times Book Review).

Random House, New York 1985 - McCarthy's masterwork, front-runner for best novel in English from the 1980s. A Near Fine copy with the outer edge of the page block foxed in like dust jacket with one closed tear on the rear panel (1/4 inch) and the slightest wear at the extremities. No remainder mark.McCarthy's masterful meditation on brutality, death, and the American West.

This is the McMillan limited edition that was subtitled The Door Into Darkness. Fine unread book in a Fine minus jacket that has a tiny ding to front panel that is within the purple cloud and barely noticeable. This is copy 114 of 300 such copies and is signed by Hillerman on the limitation page. This is the only limited, First Edition of a Hillerman Navajo mystery to be issued by a publisher other than Harper. I’m not quite sure how Dennis pulled this off, but it makes this edition of the Ghostway a collectors’ high spot. The unusual, wrap-around  jacket was done by Chista Cantu. This edition appeared a year before the Harper trade edition was published in 1985 and is the true first printing of this novel. This is the third Navajo mystery featuring Jim Chee.

Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, TX, Avedon's In the American West is widely regarded as a landmark project in photographic history. Avedon traveled throughout five years, meeting and photographing the people of the West--ranch workers, roustabouts, bar girls, drifters, gamblers, miners, wildcatters, slaughterhouse workers, and adolescents. Often mistaken as sociology, Avedon was very clear that it is entirely a fiction, his "vision" of the West. This makes the work no less stunning an achievement.
