1985. MIR?", Joan. Almario. By José-Miguel Ullán. Illustrated with 5 drypoints and an etching with aquatint printed in colours. Folio, loose as issued in the original wrappers and cloth slipcase. Paris: R.L.D. [Robert Lydie Dutrou], 1985. |~||~||~||~||~| An imaginative piece of book-making. Printed on beautiful Auvergne paper, this represents one of the rare cases where a great deal of care and imagination have clearly been lavished on the creation of the book, and not just a vehicle for Miró's illustrations. One of 35 copies containing the signed etching, which is not included in the regular edition of 90 copies. The colophon is signed by José-Miguel Ullán and stamp-signed by Miró who had died before the book was published. Cramer 256.

Photographs from the Collection of the Gilman Paper Company

1985. GILMAN COLLECTION. Photographs from the Collection of the Gilman Paper Company. Curated by Pierre Apraxine, with plates by Richard Benson, and notes to the plates by Lee Marks. 480 pp. 199 plates and a frontispiece. Large folio, bound in original half maroon calf over linen covered boards, in a slipcase. [Verona: Stamperia Valdonega for] The White Oak Press, 1985. |~||~||~||~||~| A superbly printed book, presenting, for the first time, two hundred images from one of the world's important photography resources. These images, selected by Pierre Apraxine, curator of the Gilman collection, illustrate the work of over one hundred photographers. The scope ranges from the experimental daguerrotype of the early 1840's (by Samuel F. B. Morse et al.), to the pioneering photographs by Robert Frank and Diane Arbus of the mid 1950s and 1960s. The edition was limited to 1200 copies, and has been described as "a tour-de-force of offset lithography... In this instance Richard Benson painstakingly produced fine line-screen negatives for offset printing of each black and white image in four to six colours. The Gilman Paper Company bought and installed an offset printing press in Benson's home specifically for this project. Benson has written: 'this book has always been intended to be as excellent and accurate to the originals as possible.' The 199 plates of this book bear eloquent witness to the achievement of this lofty goal." As new. Grolier Club, Century for a Century 94.

Marc Trivier photographed each subject with the same interrogative intensity. All made in the same square, elementary and closed without editing or cropping format photographs seem less staging a subject - famous or unknown, elected or deposed, living or dead - interrogate a presence. "What interested me was not just photographing a body or face, but this particular situation is someone doing the photo of someone else." By comparing portraits artists in their corresponding altered Trivier undresses the work of its effects and reveals the enigmatic photographic nude body. "In his cosmogony, every thing, every being, plant, animal or human, deserves the same respect for they are all facing the same iron law. Solitude." (Luke Desbenoit in Télérama, 05/03/2011 on the occasion of the retrospective Marc Trivier at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie). Silver prints unsigned, like most works of Trivier. Unique tests taken by the artist. Small tear at the bottom of the photo of the slaughterhouse and small traces of minor folds on margins.       Long Beach, California:: Pia Pizzo,, 1985.. One-of-a-Kind. 9.5 x 6.5 closed, 9.5 x 24" open; 15 leaves. Papier d'Arches. Japanese rice paper. Ink of China. Watercolor. Gold leaf. Paper cutting and tearing. Bound by the artist in paper wraps with painted canvas spine. Ribbon tie closure. Pia Pizzo, artist statement: "The non-books or rather the non-readable books that I contemplate as extension of the perspective of both mind and memory set out to recount a happening, a state of affairs or a journey within the page or through the pages. The page is therefore the chosen setting for any hypothetical adventure you may embark upon or any hypothetical message you may be seeking: the blank page thus represents the virgin void of mental space. In this way the progressive cutting, this virtual inter-framing between one page and another, opens up upon the perspective against which and within which the mind can roam at will.

Magvet?, Budapest 1985 - First edition of Krasznahorkai's debut novel. Title page printed in red and black. In original cloth, with illustrated dust jacket, designed by Pál Deim. 333, (3) p. "Devastating, enthralling for every minute of its seven hours. I'd be glad to see it every year for the rest of my life." - Susan Sontag. "Laszló Krasznahorkai's Hungarian novel, published in 1985, is the source of Béla Tarr's 415-minute black and white masterpiece of the same title, adapted with the author and released about a decade later perhaps the greatest Hungarian film I've seen. We already have a subsequent novel by the same author in English, 'The Melancholy of Resistance', pointing to a stylistic similarity between Krasznahorkai and Thomas Bernhard, but something tells me that 'Sátántangó' is even better: a ferocious piece of sarcasm, traversing the same day from various viewpoints like a Faulkner novel while recounting the last bitter gasps of a failed farm collective and everything its members do to betray one another." - Jonathan Rosenbaum about "Sátántangó". László Krasznahorkai (b. 1955) Hungarian novelist and screenwriter. Honoured with numerous literary prizes and the most prestigious Hungarian state award the Kossuth Prize.
