The Proceedings of the Charaka Club (Complete in 12 Vols.)

New York and Baltimore: William Wood and Company (Vols. I-IV); Paul B. Hoeber (Vols. V-VII); Columbia University Press (Vol. VIII); Richard R. Smith (Vol. IX); The Williams & Wilkins Company (Vol. X); Richard R. Smith (Vol. XI); and Hastings House (Vol. XII), 1985. Hardcover. Very Good. A very solid copy of the complete 12 volume set of the Proceedings of the Charaka Club, which "was organized in November, 1898, by a number of medical men of this city who were interested in the literary, artistic and historical aspects of medicine, and who hoped to find some recreation if not profit in dealing with this, the less serious, side of their art" (from the Introduction). Published between 1902 and 1985, all 12 uniform octavos are tight and well-preserved in their cloth-backed gray boards. A bit of very light wear at a number of the spine ends and tips but the set easily merits a VG to VG+ and remains very handsome. The first 8 volumes also include clean, brght examples of the publisher's printed paper cover labels and gilt top-edges. And Vol. XII includes the publisher's unprinted dustjacket, which is crisp and Near Fine. The first 4 volumes were limited to under 400 copies each, volumes V-VII were limited to 500 copies each and volumes VIII-XII consisted of an unspecified limitation. This set very likely belonged to G. Canby Robinson (the first Dean of Vanderbilt Medical School and the subsequent Director of Cornell Medical School) and includes 3 of his TLSs (from 1929 and 1930) laid-into Vol. I. Furthermore, Vol. II is inscribed by Merrill Moore (Harvard Medical School psychiatrist) to G. Canby Robinson and Vol. X is inscribed and initialled by Edwin A. Locke, pre-eminent American psychologist and pioneer in goal-setting theory. "The name of the Club was chosen in honor of the Hindoo Sage whose history is given in the first article by Dr. Sachs. The design for the title page and book-plate was made by Mr. George W. Maynard" (also from the Introduction).

Decor puellarum.[Paris, ca. 1740]. 4to (23.5 x 18 cm). Manuscript in Italian written in black ink on laid paper. Loose quires, never sewn or bound.

Cf. P. Allen, The concept of women, p. 659; M. Lowry, "Humanism and anti-Semitism in Venice: the strange story of 'Decor puellarum'", in: Bibliofilia LXXXVII (1985/86), pp. 39-54. A mid-18th-century manuscript transcription of the first (1471) edition, in the original Italian, of an anonymous work about the customs, habits and proper behaviour of young women and addressed directly to them. That edition, printed by Nicolas Jenson in Venice and dated "1461", but actually printed in 1471, was thought to be the first book printed in Italy until Claude Gros de Boze (1680-1753) showed in 1743 that the printed date in the colophon (MCCCCLXI) is incorrect and should have included a second X. The present manuscript copy was probably made in Paris when Jenson's edition was still thought to be the first book printed in Italy. The topics covered in the text, according to its own chapter headings (following Allen's translation), are: the appropriate and necessary goodness of the wise and most prudent maiden; the virtues that are proper for you; the order of life that you must preserve; the manner of beautiful dress; honest loves and holy desires; and lofty thoughts and devoted recommendations and contemplations, from the creation of the world to the final judgement. Even after De Boze proved the 1461 erroneous, the Decor puellarum remained one of the most sought after incunabula, both as one of Jenson's earliest productions and for its important text, whose author remains unidentified. With the first leaf foxed, but otherwise in fine condition and with large margins, with only an occasional very minor spot.

Thirty-Two Poems by Paul Celan; Newly Translated by Michael Hamburger

Embers Handpress, Norwich 1985 - Number 76 of 100 copies, first edition of these translations, octavo size, 42 pp., signed by Gisele Celan-Lestrange and Michael Hamburger. Paul Celan (1920-1970) was born Paul Antschel in Romania to a German-speaking Jewish family, his surname was later spelled Ancel and he eventually adopted the anagram Celan as his nom de plume. Celan lived in France and was influenced by the French surrealists but wrote his poetry in German (he was well versed in at least six languages, and also translated the work of many notable poets). As a German-speaking Jewish survivor of WWII, living in France, Celan struggled immensely throughout his life with feelings of estrangement from his native language; he is said to have tried to create his own version of the language, emotionally dismantling it, resulting in an indirect obscurity and unpretentious darkness. Although not necessarily representative of all his work he is best know for his poem "Todesfugue" (Death March); this book gives us the first edition of these translations of thirty-two of his shorter poems. Michael Hamburger has translated much of Celan's work to English, here faithfully printed with a delicate etching by Gisele Celan-Lestrange (1927-1991), Paul Celan's wife. ***DESCRIPTION: Original quarter mauve morocco and marbled paper covered boards, lettering in gilt to backstrip, blue-green handmade paper endpapers, fore- and bottom edges uncut, tissue-guarded frontispiece an original etching by Gisele Celan-Lestrange; on Barcham-Green paper, octavo size (10 5/16" by 6 1/2"), pagination: [3, blank], [1-5] 6-39, [2, blank], [1,colophon], [5, blank], limited edition, this number 76 of 100 copies, signed by Gisele Celan-Lestrange and Michael Hamburger.         El amor en los tiempos del Cólera

Bogotá: Editorial Oveja Negra 1985 - First edition, limited issue of 1,000 copies. Signed by García Márquez and notarized by Colombian authorities to limitation page. Publisher's white boards, lettered in black to spine, in the original white dust jacket lettered in black, with steamboat illustration to front panel and artistic illustration of the author to rear panel. A bright near fine copy with a touch of soiling and bumping to extremities, as well as light toning to page edges; dust jacket lightly soiled with wear and creasing to edges, and with some closed tears and a few areas of loss to bottom edge, none affecting text. Overall, a pleasing copy of this scarce true first edition. El amor en los tiempos del cólera (Love in the Time of Cholera) focuses on the relationship of three members of a love triangle over the course of time. Based on the author's parents' relationship, the plot is divided into six parts, with two sections each for the three main stages of life: youth, adulthood, and old age. This volume is part of an advanced printing of 1,000 special edition copies signed by García Márquez, the proceeds of which were donated to the survivors of the 1985 Armero Tragedy in Colombia. During this catastrophic event, over 20,000 people died in the eruption of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, including the majority of the population of Armero, a city built on the hardened remains of an earlier eruption. García Márquez, a Colombian nationalist and political activist, was living outside of the country at the time of the tragedy, having fled government persecution for his support of a radical military group. Although he did not return when he was invited back in 1982, Márquez never gave up his effort to improve the political climate and quality of life in Colombia.
