Bright Lights, Big City (signed 1st printing)

Jonathan Cape, London 1985 - Jonathan Cape. London. 1985. 182 pages. Signed. This book was originally released as a paperback original in the USA. The first time this book was published in a hardcover format was in the UK in 1985, published by Jonathan Cape. This is that copy, the first hardcover edition, 1st printing and coincidently, the first UK edition as well. This elusive edition remains the plum of the 1980s literary bratpack revolution. This edition is signed by Jay McInerney directly to the title page. Signed in person in NYC during the celebratory release of Jay McInerney's Bright, Precious Days. Book is crisp, square and tight with sharp corners. Endpapers are bright and clean. Pages lay tight and unread. Most faint traces (barely) of light foxing to page edges. Original 1st issue DJ with 8.50 price intact on flap. Yellow titles on DJ spine are bright. Jonathan Cape manufactured these DJs with a thin protective film coating. If you look closely, you can see some of the film lines. Condition report is hyper-critical. This is an incredible copy of a most desirable, landmark title that defines an era. Signed in the elusive first hardcover edition, first printing. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

New York: The Viking Press, 1985 First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by Burroughs to Steven Lowe on the title page in the year of publication: "for Steve Lowe / with memories of / many years of / friendship / William S. Burroughs / November 6, 1985". Publisher's light blue cloth, lettered in silver; in the original white pictorial dust jacket designed by Neil Stuart, illustrated with George Baselitz's Orangenesser X to the front panel, lettered in black. Near fine, with a hint of toning to the extremities, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with a 1" closed tear to the bottom edge of the rear panel, light soiling to flap folds, else bright and fresh. Overall, a very clean and beautiful copy. Burroughs inscribed this copy of Queer to his close friend, assistant, and collaborator Steve Lowe. As Mark Van de Walle comments in a 2011 article about Lowe and his Beat Hotel for The Paris Review, "Steve and William were close and more than close? They were friends, although that word seems pallid to describe their relationship, more intimate than most marriages." Similarly, Lowe and Burroughs' professional relationship extended beyond the usual boundaries. As Van de Walle explains, Lowe was "William Burroughs's amanuensis, a position that combined the duties of researcher, artist's assistant, gallerist, and Official Writer's-Block Breaker." Over the course of their friendship, which spanned well over a quarter century, Lowe amassed a sizeable collection of Burroughs ephemera and signed materials, including this copy of Queer. Burroughs first began writing Queer, a companion piece to Junkie (1953), in 1951 shortly after the death of his wife Joan and while he was awaiting trial for her accidental homicide. Like Junkie, this semiautobiographical text features heroin addict William Lee as the protagonist. Set in Mexico City, Queer follows Lee as he suffers from "acute heroin withdrawal" and has a romantic interest in a fellow addict. Although he disliked Queer for its painful reminders of the past, Burroughs notes in the introduction that he would "never have become a writer but for Joan's death.". Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition.. Hardcover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare, especially signed. "Blood Meridian seems to me the authentic American apocalyptic novel, more relevant even in 2000 than it was fifteen years ago. The fulfilled renown of Moby-Dick and of As I Lay Dying is augmented by Blood Meridian, since Cormac McCarthy is the worthy disciple both of Melville and of Faulkner. I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable as Blood Meridian" (Harold Bloom). McCarthy can only be compared with our greatest writers, with Melville and Faulkner, and this is his masterpiece" (Michael Herr).

        The Cunning Little Vixen

New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, (1985). First U.S. edition. original green cloth lettered in gilt, pictorial endpapers. Very edges of cloth a tad faded, else fine/pictorial dust jacket (a bit worn). Quarto. Profusely illustrated in colour by Maurice Sendak Signed and inscribed by Maurice Sendak on first leaf. With inscriptions and signatures of two of the translators. With the signature of the recipient, Yveta Graff Rudolf Tesnohlidek, a journalist in the Moravia city of Brno, wrote "The Cunning Little Vixen" as a newspaper serial, fitting it to student sketches by the artist Stanislav Lolek. The illustrated serial ran in the Brno newspaper "Lidove Noviny [People's News] in the spring of 1920 and made such a stir that it came out in book form a year later. ... never before been translated into another language, despite the international fame of the opera that Leos Janacek based it on. This edition of "The Cunning Little Vixen "is lavishly illustrated by Maurice Sendak, who designed the New York City Opera's celebrated production of the Janacek opera. Yveta Synek Graff was born in Prag to fervent anti-nazi parents who fled to Paris. Her father Emil Synek worked with the Czech government in-exile. In 1956 Yveta came to the United States and remained here until her death in 2015. She and her second husband F. Malcom Graff were avid opera lovers, and with her husband's encouragement Yveta became involved, first as a vocal coach in her native Czech language and then with her colleague and editor Robert T. Jones, as a translator and transliteraor (i.e. phonetic transcription). Today her transliterations are permanently archived at the Juilliard School of Music and used by every opera house in the world. She began in 1977 with the Opera Orchestra of New York performing Smetana's Dalibor, in Czech, on the stage of Carnegie Hall. For the next thirty years she worked at almost every opera house of not in the world overseeing productions of operas by Leos Janacek (the Cunning Little Vixen, Kat'a Kabanova, Jenufa, From the House of the Dead and the Makropulos Case), Dvorak (Rusalka) and Smetana (The Bartered Bride).
