Thatcher, Margaret. (Friedrich von (F.A.) Hayek)
1984. Exceptional letter signed by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to Nobel Prize-winning economist Friedrich von Hayek. One page, on Thatcher's official 10 Downing Street letterhead and dated May 22nd 1984, the letter reads, "Dear Professor Hayek," I have it in mind on the occasion of the forthcoming list of Birthday Honours to submit your name to The Queen with a recommendation that Her Majesty may be graciously pleased to approve that you be appointed a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour. I should be glad to know if this would be agreeable to you. I shall take no steps until I have your reply. "Yours sincerely, Margaret Thatcher." Accompanied by a large original black and white photograph of Hayek taken at the honorary appointment at Buckingham Palace in which, he was in fact, awarded the Companion of Honour Medal by Queen Elizabeth II. In fine condition. Matted and framed, the entire piece measures 24.5 inches by 19 inches. An exceptional piece of history. The Order of the Companions of Honour was established by King George V on June 4th 1917 as a reward for outstanding achievements to be "conferred upon a limited number of persons for whom this special distinction seems to be the most appropriate form of recognition, constituting an honour disassociated either from the acceptance of title or the classification of merit." Hayek was appointed a Companion of Honour in the 1984 for his "services to the study of Economics". The appointment was attended by a 20 minute audience with the Queen followed by dinner at the Institute of Economic Affairs. That evening … [Click Below for Full Description]

O'BRIAN, Patrick.
O'BRIAN, Patrick. The Far Side of the World. London: Collins, 1984.8vo. Original green cloth with lettering in gilt to spine; original dust wrapper with illustration by Barbosa; pp. [viii], 371, [v]; text block a little browned as usual, spine of wrapper very slightly sunned, otherwise a very nice copy in price-clipped dust-jacket. First edition, first impression, in the second state dust jacket as usual. The publisher initially printed the incorrect price on the jacket, and this error was resolved by clipping the jacket and applying a sticker for £9.95, as in this copy. Very few survived with the original price. An attractive copy of one of the most difficult Aubrey titles to find in nice condition, with only the very slightest loss of the bright red to the spine of the wrapper. In the tenth novel in the Aubrey-Maturin series, the war of 1812 continues, with Jack Aubrey setting course for Cape Horn on a mission to intercept a powerful American frigate outward bound to play havoc with the British whaling trade. Typhoons, castaways, shipwrecks, murder, and criminal insanity ensues. The book formed the basis for 2003 Peter Weir film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany.#2097691

BERGE, Carol (Editor)
Center, 1984. First Edition. Wraps. 4to. Thirteen issues, one supplement. Side-stapled or perfect-bound; printed mimeo or offset. All about very good plus or better (with the exception of the final issue, with large triangular notch cut out of bottom half of front cover and penned note reading "Limited Edition - / This copy not for resale"). Otherwise, only light touches of edgewear, hints of soil. Impressive overall: clean, bright, crisp. Very good +. Full run of this important mimeo distinguished by its emphasis on prose, rather than poetry; CENTER also drew from a wider range of avant-garde art than was typical of its peers (theatre, dance, and music, particularly from the Cage/Fluxus/Mac Low axis). Philip Corner, Richard Kostelanetz, and Jackson Mac Low were some of the more frequent contributors, among many others (David Antin, Carolee Schneeman, and Genesis P-Orridge, to name a few), during a period which saw "a plethora of experimentation in modes hitherto unexplored," as Berge herself put it. She also noted that print runs ranged from 200 to 450 each. [Clay and Phillips 204-5]. [Attributes: First Edition]

1984. Condition: Very Good. Excellent condition. No marks, writing or underling. Only imperfection is slight tear around the bottom staple. Check out this gem. This listing is for a rare 1984 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Report. As has often been said, these Berkshire Hathaway annual reports, including the Chairman's Letter written by Warren Buffett, are pure solid gold loaded with investing wisdom. This copy is in excellent condition. No underlinings, marks or writing on it. The only imperfection is a slight tear around the bottom staple. You almost don't even see it. 64 total pages, which also includes the 1984 annual report letters from Charlie Munger. Makes a great addition to your Berkshire annual report collection. It probably goes without saying, but I only have this one '84 Berkshire annual report, so when it's gone, that's it. It's gone forever. Shipping is by USPS Priority Mail with delivery confirmation (in a box to protect it)... so you'll be holding your copy of the 1984 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Report in your hands in just 2-3 business days. P.S. One last thought. It's important. As a serious collector I know once said, "When you come across a rare item, the time to buy it is when you see it, because you may never see it again.". 1984. An important edition as this was edited by Richard Burton's friend Leonard C Smithers. Published by H S Nichols and Co. This is the first of Nichols and Smithers' fine library edition. A scarce edition of the work. This edition was published soon after Lady Burton's family edition and shortly before the illustrated library edition. This edition is of importance as it reinstates the text originally omitted by Lady Burton's edition. As stated in the preface, Smithers intention in the restoration was so that this work can finally 'take its proper place on the library shelf alongside Cervantes and Shakespeare.' In beautiful cloth bindings with pictorial gilt stamping to boards. So the books are in mostly good condition. You can see the the photos that the worst part is on one of the volumes cover. On the fifth volume there is come chew marks on the cover also photoed. The pages are good, only some spotting. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have or send additional photos. It is an anti-war story; specifically, a parable about arms races in general, mutuallyassured destruction and nuclear weapons in particular. The Butter Battle Book was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. This book was written during the Cold War era, and reflects the concerns of the time, especially the perceived possibility that all life on Earth could be destroyed in a nuclear war. It can also be seen as a satirical work, with its depiction of a deadly war based on a senseless conflict over something as trivial as a breakfast food.
