Nathalie Sarraute - François. Photographies Originales

Par l'auteur. A pair of original black and white photographic portraits taken and printed by Marc Trivier. The two photographs are, respectively : - An original photographic portrait of Nathalie Sarraute in Paris in 1987. - An original photographic portrait of François taken in the psychiatric hospital in Manage in 1984.Artists, strangers, madmen, abbatoirs, trees - Marc Trivier photographed each of his subjects with the same interrogative intensity. All his photographs are in the same square format, simple and confined, with no retouching or alteration of the framing, and seem less to show off a subject - famous or unknown, in or out of power, dead or alive - than to seek out a presence. "What interested me was not simply photographing a body or a face, but the curious situation of someone taking a photo of someone else." In placing his portraits of artists side by side with a divergent pair, Trivier denudes the work of its effect and reveals the enigmatic nakedness of the photographic body. "In his cosmogony every thing, every being - vegetable, mineral or human - deserves the same respect. "In his cosmogony every thing, every being - vegetable, mineral or human - deserves the same respect. For all are subject to the same iron law: solitude" (Luc Desbenoit in Télérama, 05/03/2011, on the occasion of Marc Trivier's retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie).Unsigned silver prints, like most of Trivier's work. Unique proofs printed by the artist. An exceedingly rare diptych by one of the great contemporary photographers.  Par l'auteur S.l. 1984-1987 22x22cm sur papier Ilford 30x40cm 2 planches photographiques

Tagore / Priyambada Devi's Letters to Okakura / Priyambada Devi's Notebook / Priyambada Devi's Second Notebook / Notes by and concerning Okakura - Housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston / A Record of Okakura's Eyesight nnOkakura Kakuzo (February 14, 1862 ? September 2, 1913) (also known as Okakura Tenshin) was a Japanese scholar who contributed to the development of arts in Japan. Outside Japan, he is chiefly remembered today as the author of The Book of Tea.nBorn in Yokohama to parents originally from Fukui, Okakura learned English while attending a school operated by Christian missionary, Dr. Curtis Hepburn. At 15, he entered Tokyo Imperial University, where he first met and studied under Harvard-educated professor Ernest Fenollosa. In 1889, Okakura co-founded the periodical Kokka. In 1887 he was one of the principal founders of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko), and a year later became its head, although he was later ousted from the school in an administrative struggle. Later, he also founded the Japan Art Institute with Hashimoto Gaho and Yokoyama Taikan. He was invited by William Sturgis Bigelow to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1904 and became the first head of the Asian art division in 1910.nnOkakura was a high-profile urbanite who had an international sense of self. In the Meiji period he was the first dean of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (later merged with the Tokyo Music School to form the current Tokyo University of the Arts). He wrote all of his main works in English. Okakura researched Japan's traditional art and traveled to Europe, the United States, China and India. He emphasised the importance to the modern world of Asian culture, attempting to bring its influence to realms of art and literature that, in his day, were largely dominated by Western culture.nnHis 1903 book on Asian artistic and cultural history, The Ideals of the East with Special Reference to the Art of Japan, published on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, is famous for its opening paragraph in which he sees a spiritual unity throughout Asia, which distinguishes it from the West:nnAsia is one. The Himalayas divide, only to accentuate, two mighty civilisations, the Chinese with its communism of Confucius, and the Indian with its individualism of the Vedas. But not even the snowy barriers can interrupt for one moment that broad expanse of love for the Ultimate and Universal, which is the common thought-inheritance of every Asiatic race, enabling them to produce all the great religions of the world, and distinguishing them from those maritime peoples of the Mediterranean and the Baltic, who love to dwell on the Particular, and to search out the means, not the end, of life.nnIn his subsequent book, The Awakening of Japan, published in 1904, he argued that "the glory of the West is the humiliation of Asia." This was an early expression of Pan-Asianism. In this book Okakura also noted that Japan's rapid modernization was not universally applauded in Asia: "We have become so eager to identify ourselves with European civilization instead of Asiatic that our continental neighbors regard us as renegades?nay, even as an embodiment of the White Disaster itself."nnIn Japan, Okakura, along with Fenollosa, is credited with "saving" Nihonga, or painting done with traditional Japanese technique, as it was threatened with replacement by Western-style painting, or "Yoga", whose chief advocate was artist Kuroda Seiki. In fact this role, most assiduously pressed after Okakura's death by his followers, is not taken seriously by art scholars today, nor is the idea that oil painting posed any serious "threat" to traditional Japanese painting. Yet Okakura was certainly instrumental in modernizing Japanese aesthetics, having recognized the need to preserve Japan's cultural heritage, and thus was one of the major reformers during Japan's period of modernization beginning with the Meiji Restoration.nnOutside Japan, Okakura had an impact on a number of important figures, directly or indirectly, who include Swami Vivekananda, philosopher Martin Heidegger, poet Ezra Pound, and especially poet Rabindranath Tagore and heiress Isabella Stewart Gardner, who were close personal friends of his.         Les intellectuels en question

In Le journal des débats N°29. First Edition printed small number of this reprinted from the journal of Pierre Nora, The Debate. Precious autograph signed by the author to his sister "... for you, this little reading and to help you cheer up." Marguerite Blanchot, renowned organist Chalon Cathedral, remained all his life in the family home with his mother and aunt. "It will gradually become, for the family, as the memory of origins." Very close to Maurice, she regularly corresponded with the writer who reflects him great recognition for his dedication to their helpless mother. If intense affection Blanchot for his mother and his sister shines in dedications of it, we know almost nothing of their relations. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot, Christophe Bident reveals, however: "Marguerite Maurice Blanchot worshiped his brother very proud of him, (...) it attached great importance to his political ideas (...) She read a lot (.... .) They phoned corresponded. A distance, they shared the same natural authority, the same concern for discretion. " Blanchot address him indeed many books from his library, now with her continuous intellectual link. As the passion of Blanchot for his mother, it is the turn of his work that we discover the finest examples: "Maybe the power of the mother figure she borrows its brightness to the same power fascination, and one could say that if the mother carries this fascinating attraction is as appearing when the child lives entirely under the gaze of fascination, it concentrates in itself all the powers of enchantment ". Cultivating absolute discretion, Blanchot pushed the art of erasing into his handwritten dedications generally brief and almost always written on cards attached to the rare books he offered his close friends. In contrast, in these precious autograph dedication of the authors to his mother and sister, Blanchot offers in all its fragility and, in the privacy of this correspondence, his work focuses on a previously unknown personal look. A small tear at the top of the back. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! Interesting collection of maps of the Beemster polder, which in the 16th century was an eight by nine kilometre inland sea north of Amsterdam. Its reclamation in the years 1607 to 1612, financed largely by the Dutch East India Company, was one of the most ambitious of the early 17th-century drainage projects. Dykes were built and the water was pumped out by 41 windmills, creating a large polder with sorely needed residential and above all farming land near the rapidly expanding city of Amsterdam. Including: (Ad 1:) Apparently the last reprint, not reported in the literature, of a magnificent map of the Beemster Polder, on a scale of about 1:11,500, which "may be called the finest water-authority map of this era" (Fockema Andreae, Gesch.         The Barracks Thief

NY: Ecco Press. (1984). An association copy of his third book, a novella, about three paratroopers waiting to be shipped to Vietnam. Warmly inscribed to Andre Dubus and his wife: "For my dear friends Andre and Peggy, on the occasion of the annual Dubus-Wolff cut-up, foot-stomp, and blue-fish slaughter - may their finny souls swim in peace. Until next time, Love, Toby/ Bradford, August 19, 1984." Bradford would be Bradford College, where Dubus taught. In addition to being masters of the short story and memoir, Wolff and Dubus, relatively early in their friendship at the time of this inscription, were close friends through their lives, until Dubus' death in 1999. Wolff provided the introduction to Dubus' 1991 collection Broken Vessels. Dubus would review this book, The Barracks Thief, in September, 1989 in the periodical America; in part: "If words on paper could make sounds, you would hear me shouting now, urging you to read this book." Winner of the PEN Faulkner Award. A bit of dampstaining to the lower front board; near fine in a dust jacket with some dampstaining to the verso, thus very good. A wonderful literary association.
