        Wall Street

Woodstock: Charles Gatewood and Flash Productions, 1984. Near fine in wrappers.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Number 666 of 700 numbered copies; SIGNED by Gatewood. An unheralded work by a photographer best-known for his 1975 cult favorite, Sidetripping, a collaboration with William S. Burroughs, focused on dark, eccentric characters in the tradition of Diane Arbus. Yet, the subject matter and rendering of Wall Street would seem to have nothing in common with Gatewood's other work. With its formalized detail of a dark and shadowy Wall Street, photographed between 1971-1975, this book feels more like Harry Callahan or Aaron Siskind than Diane Arbus. In his excellent introduction, A.D. Coleman writes with uncanny prescience that: "Money is the real obscenity of our age: people will detail their most intimate sex acts before they'll reveal their salaries or net worth. If there's truth in that, then what Gatewood has delivered up here is a set of visual metaphors for that most secretive perversion: high finance."

        THE HEART OF A HUMUMENT

[London and Stuttgart]: Printed by The Talfourd Press, 1984. FIRST EDITION. This volume is of particular importance as an example of the design work of Philip Smith (b. 1928), the person generally recognized as the foremost English bookbinder of the last 50 years. Smith graduated from the Royal College of Art in London and subsequently did binding and conservation work with Sydney Cockerell. A past president of Designer Bookbinders (in 1977-79) as well as a respected author, Smith is a pioneer in the field. Since about 1959, he has consistently explored the potential of the physical form of the book as an alternative art medium. He has added several new terms to the vocabulary of bookbinding and has been awarded patents for new inventions, both visual and functional, as well as making innovations in structural and visual design now applied by an ever growing number of bookbinders. The present volume is part of a series of artist's books by Tom Phillips, who (according to his website) bought the obscure Victorian title "A Human Document" for three pence in 1966, with the intention of "alter[ing] every page by painting, collage, and cut-up techniques to create an entirely new version" entitled the "Humument." This miniature entry in his series is composed of a block of pages from the central portion of the novel--this core of the text being literally the "heart" of the "Humument.". 122 x 84 mm. (4 7/8 x 3 1/4"). [72] leaves. FIRST EDITION. TROMPE L'OEIL PAINTED GOATSKIN AND PARCHMENT PAPER BINDING BY PHILIP SMITH (with signed binder's notes tipped onto rear flyleaf), cover design offering "peeks" of books floating in a blue sky through "holes" cut in a wall, open spine with brown leather and vellum yokes protecting the head and tail, the visible paper quire folds and stitching painted blue, marbled endpapers, trade edition printed endpapers bound in as flyleaves, edges painted and waxed, head edge with a "conundrum" written and painted by the binder. In a hand-stitched blue felt pouch with Smith's paper address label affixed. Illustrated in color throughout, original lithograph bound in at rear. In mint condition. This volume is of particular importance as an example of the design work of Philip Smith (b. 1928), the person generally recognized as the foremost English bookbinder of the last 50 years. Smith graduated from the Royal College of Art in London and subsequently did binding and conservation work with Sydney Cockerell. The sketch shows a central cylindrical tower with zebra bands of brickwork or stone, set off by trees with a staircase contained within its own structure following the inclined landscape down and with a detailed entryway facade with highlighted detail around the crown. It is reminiscent of his 1981 cylindrical design with staircase for the Stabio House.         Flaubert's Parrot [Signed]

London Jonathan Cape 1984 First Impression ("First published 1984") of the author's "most celebrated book . . . hailed as an exemplary postmodernist text . . ." (Literary Encyclopedia) 8vo: 190pp. Publisher's lime-green cloth, spine stamped in gilt; pictorial dust jacket priced £8.50. Signed and dated (not inscribed) by Barnes on title-page. Virtually pristine, a Very Fine copy, apparently unread. Short-listed for the Man Booker Prize; awarded the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize As New ¶ "Flaubert's Parrot tells the story of a retired doctor, Geoffrey Braithwaite, who is fascinated by the French nineteenth century writer Gustave Flaubert and, on a personal level, is trying to come to terms with the death of his wife, Ellen. Though these two concerns seem separate at first, as the book progresses, the relation between the two strands is brought to light. On the one hand, Geoffrey and Ellen Braithwaite appear as a contemporary English replica of Charles and Emma Bovary in Flaubert's masterpiece Madame Bovary; on the other hand, the narrator's obsession with Flaubert is a way to displace and assuage the grief caused by his wife's infidelity and suicide." (Literary Encyclopedia) NB: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
