Death of a Salesman, Certain Private Conversations in Two Acts and a Requiem

The Limited Editions Club, New York 1984 - no. 1107 of 1500, 4to - over 9.75" - 12" tall, 167 p., signed by author and illustrator Arthur Miller was an American playwright, essayist, and figure in the twnetieth-century American Theatre. In Miller's more than thirty plays, which have won him a Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony Awards, he puts in question "death and betrayal and injustice and how we are to account for this little life of ours." For nearly six decades, Miller has been creating characters that wrestle with power conflicts, personal and social responsibility, the repercussions of past actions, and the twin poles of guilt and hope. (N. B. info from The National Endowment for the Humanities website). ***ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR: Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an artistic genius whose works almost defy categorization. Eminent in sculpting, illustration, printmaking and also as a typographer and printer, he pursued multiple art forms all of which have, as an underlying thread, social consciousness and a high regard for humanity (N.B., above information from the website of the Galerie St. Etienne). Mr. Baskin founded The Gehenna Press in 1942 while at Yale University, taking his inspiration from William Blake's example as both a poet and an artist/bookmaker. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound by Gray Parrot in full rust-brown Nigerian goatskin with gilt lettering on the spine, five tissue-guarded etchings by Leonard Baskin; printed by the Wild Carrot Letterpress, set in American and English monotype Bulmer on mould-made Cartiere Enrico Magnani paper; pagination: (5) - (165), blank (166), colophon (167); 10.5" tall, signed by author Arthur Miller and illustrator Leonard Baskin, Limited Edition no. 1107 of 1500; slipcase bound in grey paper with gilt lettering on the spine. ***CONDITION: Book is in fine condition with the leather binding smooth and supple, the colour on the spine deep (not sunned), corners straight and unrubbed, solid hinges and a strong text block, clean and bright inside and entirely free of prior owner markings. The slipcase is in near fine condition, strong and sturdy with some wear to corners and opening, a bump to the top left corner and very slight bump to bottom right corner. ***CITATION: LEC no. 540. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, The Darkest Road [Flat-Signed Canadian 1st Printings/1st Editions]

McClelland & Stewart, Collins, Toronto, Don Mills - 1st printings of the first Canadian hardcover and true first editions of the author's first three books, which comprise the trilogy known as The Fionavar Tapestry. Each copy is autographed by Kay in blue ballpoint pen with no inscription. There are no markings by a previous owner. The jacket on this copy of The Summer Tree is price intact, and the jackets on Books Two and Three are not priced, as issued. The set includes The Summer Tree (Toronto: M&S, 1984 - 0771044720), The Wandering Fire (Toronto: Collins, 1986 - 0002230445) and The Darkest Road (Toronto: Collins, 1986 - 0002231158). Following the publication of The Summer Tree by McClelland & Stewart publishing rights fell to Collins of Toronto, and it published the first hardcover editions of Books Two and Three. CONDITION: A well-preserved set, which includes a pleasing copy of the very scarce (if not rare) Canadian first hardcover edition of The Summer Tree signed by the author on the title page. This copy of Book One has a slight spine slant, the top corner of the front board is bruised, the spine ends have softened, and the page edges are mildly tanned. The dustjacket is bright and the wrap-around art is unaffected by sunning, including the spine. Barely discernible tanning to the white section of the jacket that runs across the top edge of both panels and at the crown of the spine. The heel and crown of the spine of the jacket have softened and show creases and wear. There is a short vertical tear in the crown of the spine at the edge of the back panel and in the bottom edge of the back panel at the hinge with an associated crease. A verticle crease runs the length of the back flap, and the bottom corner of the back flap is creased. Bound in blue cloth, this copy of Book Two is square and tight and signed by the author on the title page. The bottom corners of both boards have been bumped, and the spine ends have softened. The page edges are tanned, and there is the ghost of a pencil erasure at the top edge of the ffep. The jacket on this copy of Book Two is bright and crisp. One of the commonly found traits of the Collins jackets are wrinkles in the surface laminate, which originated in production. This is evident in the jacket of Book Two on the back panel, along the hinges and briefly at edge of the spine and front panel. But this is unobtrusive. The white flaps have sharp edges and show milding tanning at the extremities. There is a short, horizontal crease along the top edge of the back panel. Bound in grey cloth, this copy of Book Three is square and tight and signed by Kay on the half-title page. The bottom corners of both boards are bruised, and the spine ends have softened. The page edges are tanned, and the top and bottom edges of both boards and the heel and crown of the spine show mild sunning. There is the ghost of a pencil erasure at the top corner of the ffep. The jacket on Book Three is bright and crisp with more pronounced tanning to the edges of the white flaps than on Book Two. Softening of the spine ends and mild wear to the top edges of both panels. There you have a warts-and-all description of the condition of the scarcely found Canadian hardcover editions of the Fionavar Tapestry autographed by the author without inscription. In 1977 Guy Kay assisted Christopher Tolkien in bringing The Silmarillion to publication, and he has gone on to a distinguished career as a fantasy writer. According to the author, The Summer Tree was the first book of fantasy for adults by a Canadian author to be published in hardcover. Kay has written 12 novels and a collection of poetry that have been translated into 30 languages, including Tigana, The Sarantine Mosaic and The Last Light of the Sun. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Overseas buyers will be asked to pay the actual cost of shipping. Canadian orders will be charged GST. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Wall Street

Woodstock: Charles Gatewood and Flash Productions, 1984. Near fine in wrappers.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Number 666 of 700 numbered copies; SIGNED by Gatewood. An unheralded work by a photographer best-known for his 1975 cult favorite, Sidetripping, a collaboration with William S. Burroughs, focused on dark, eccentric characters in the tradition of Diane Arbus. Yet, the subject matter and rendering of Wall Street would seem to have nothing in common with Gatewood's other work. With its formalized detail of a dark and shadowy Wall Street, photographed between 1971-1975, this book feels more like Harry Callahan or Aaron Siskind than Diane Arbus. In his excellent introduction, A.D. Coleman writes with uncanny prescience that: "Money is the real obscenity of our age: people will detail their most intimate sex acts before they'll reveal their salaries or net worth. If there's truth in that, then what Gatewood has delivered up here is a set of visual metaphors for that most secretive perversion: high finance."
