        The Warhol Papers [Censored Version]

NY: The Artist, 1984. Paperback. Very good. [32]pp in stapled, silver foil covered wraps. Light abrading to the spine edge, slight edgewear, couple of light creases, otherwise very good. Title page stamped "Censored Version" in red; some sections of text redacted in black. Published by Bidlo as an artist's statement on the occasion of his installation/performance of "Andy Warhol's Factory". The text describes the shooting (and death) of Andy Warhol and how Leo Castelli, Robert Scull, and others conspired to have a female artist, Donna Vera, undergo surgery to resemble Warhol and portray him as a living artist.& In 1984, Mike Bidlo who had a studio residency at P.S. 1, Long Island City, NY. presented an event in his studio that was a re-creation of the Warhol Factory with about Three dozen artists, writers, etc., portraying members of the Factory and other Warhol-era individuals (e.g., Gerard Malanga, Leo Castelli, Edie Sedgwick, Bianca Jagger, etc.) with of course, Bidlo playing the role of Warhol.& Bidlo even went so far as to have another group of artists - with actual instruments (i.e., electric guitar, drums, microphones) - playing the roles of the members of the Velvet Underground and performing songs from the Velvet Underground's debut album with David Wojnarowicz as Lou Reed and Keiko Bonk as Nico. & An uncommon piece from early in the artist's career. While Bidlo is acclaimed today for his copies of works by famous artists, this, his second performance was definitely an ambitious effort in replicating a whole time and place in art history. Uncommon, OCLC locates one copy at NYU.

        Under the Volcano

New York: Reynal and Hitchcock. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION of Lowry's masterpiece; the basis for the 1984 John Huston film starring Albert Finney. "To describe his perennial theme, Lowry once borrowed the words of the critic Edmund Wilson: 'the forces in man which cause him to be terrified of himself.' You see exactly what he means in this coruscating novel, which traces the last 24 hours in the life of Geoffrey Firmin, once the British consul in a hellish Mexican town, now a dedicated but utterly cogent alcoholic in that same town, on a day when his ex-wife has returned in a futile attempt to reach out to him. Shadowed by the hoodlums of the corrupt local officialdom, beset by his own furies, Firmin hurtles himself, annotating his fall all the while, into a pit of suffering. A vertiginous picture of self-destruction, seen through the eyes of a man still lucid enough to report to us all the harrowing particulars" (Richard Lacayo, Time: All Time 100 Novels). New York: Reynal and Hitchcock, 1947. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. Book fine, dust jacket expertly restored and reinforced at spine and flaps; quite an attractive copy.

Unique Inscribed copy of this Limited Edition of 1500 hand-numbered copies signed by the artist, José Luis Cuevas. THIS COPY WITH ADDITIONAL INSCRIPTION AND ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWING BY THE ARTIST. With etchings on tissue-guarded plates and drawings by José Luis Cuevas created specifically for this publication. Large 8vo, hand-cased at the Gray Parrot bindery in quarter gray-brown calf over textured paper-covered boards, the spine lettered in gilt within a blank embossed frame, in the original slipcase. xii, 61, [1]. Internally a pristine copy, the binding also fine but for a light touch of sun and one small abrasion to the calf of the spine, the slipcase still very nice with only minor age evidence. UNIQUE INSCRIBED COPY WITH AN ORIGINAL DRAWING BY JOSÉ LUIS CUEVAS. The famous Mexican Surrealist has inscribed this copy “La Vida de un hobre ... with a bold signature and a very large pen and ink drawing filling much of the front blank page.
