        Flaubert's Parrot [Signed]

London: Jonathan Cape, 1984. First Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Impression ("First published 1984"). 8vo: 190pp. Publisher's lime-green cloth, spine stamped in gilt; pictorial dust jacket priced £8.50. Bookplate of Otis Skinner Blodget laid in. Inscribed and signed by Barnes on title-page. Virtually pristine, a Very Fine copy. Barnes’s most celebrated book . . . hailed as an exemplary postmodernist text for its . . . epistemological concerns over the irretrievability of the past and its blurring of the boundaries between fact and fiction. . . . Flaubert’s Parrot tells the story of a retired doctor, Geoffrey Braithwaite, who is fascinated by the French nineteenth century writer Gustave Flaubert and, on a personal level, is trying to come to terms with the death of his wife, Ellen. Though these two concerns seem separate at first, as the book progresses, the relation between the two strands is brought to light. On the one hand, Geoffrey and Ellen Braithwaite appear as a contemporary English replica of Charles and Emma Bovary in Flaubert’s masterpiece Madame Bovary; on the other hand, the narrator’s obsession with Flaubert is a way to displace and assuage the grief caused by his wife’s infidelity and suicide." (The Literary Encyclopedia) Shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.       Glen Allen, CA, 1984-1991. Letter. Excellent collection in Near Fine condition. Superb collection of 8 typed letters to a couple she befriended in 1984 variously SIGNED as MFK Fisher, Mary Frances Fisher, MFKF, but usually Mary Frances, all from her Glen Allen, CA, home on 8-1/2" x 11" plain paper. The letters trace the growth of the friendship from the husband's initial contact with Fisher through his death and the continuing friendship with his wife. The letters are chock full of wonderful prose-- W.H. Auden said of Fisher: "I do not know of anyone in the United States today who writes better prose." Fisher discusses Marseille, hotels and restaurants-- "The place was fairly clean, and the food was quite good, but not good enough," and of course, food and books. Fisher also talks about her sister, a gift sent to her by the correspondents, and travel--"Once I was in Strasburg from November through April, and I almost froze to death. We lived in an attic across from the zoo, and I would go over to look at the birds whose feet were frozen to the ground, and feel free but too cold to cry about it or them." There are many holograph corrections and additions by Fisher throughout. Two envelopes are present along with three stray envelopes, a typed letter from Fisher's assistant describing how Fisher's voice is almost completely gone, and a typed recipe on an index card for Chermoula (Moroccan) adapted by Fisher.

        MIRÓ ENGRAVER I. 1928-1960

Paris: Daniel Lelong, 1984. First and limited edition, one of 2700 numbered copies printed in English and including the three original woodcuts by Joan Miró. With three original full-colour woodcuts especially executed by Miró for this edition printed Joan Barbarà’s Atelier in Barcelona and with 290 photogravure reproductions of Miró’s works printed by Jean-Paul Vibert and with several other black and white illustrations from photographs. Folio, publisher’s original blue cloth lettered in white on the upper cover and spine and in the original dust-jacket printed by Joan Barbarà and cut from wood by Joan Miró. 184, [6] pp. A fine copy, the book essentially as new and pristine, the jacket in excellent, as pristine condition. BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED Catalogue Raisonné OF THE EARLY WORKS OF THE GREAT SPANISH SURREALIST, JOAN MIRó. WITH THREE ORIGINAL full-colour WOODBLOCK PRINTS MADE ESPECIALLY FOR THIS EDITION. Earning international acclaim, Miró’s work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting. This catalogue features works from 1928 to 1960.

Mario Botta: Buildings and projects 1961-1982

Electa / Rizzoli, New York, Architectural Documents Series, the first English language edition, translated from the Italian An extraordinary example with a superb, full-page presentation made by Botta a month before public release to an unnamed recipient. On the half-title page he has executed an original, 220 x 239 mm pen & ink sketch sited in San Francisco, dated May 4, 1984 and boldly signed below. It anticipates by five years some of his 1989 architectural sketches for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), his acclaimed first U.S. commission (final plans-1990, opened to public-1995), including Central Atrium and Floor Plan & Section sketches for the striking circle & square, central tower design with its steel frame and sophisticated, textured brick cladding with zebra bands of granite. ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURAL SKETCH: shows a central cylindrical tower with zebra bands of brickwork or stone, set off by trees, with a staircase contained within its own structure following the inclined landscape down, and with a detailed entryway facade with highlighted detail around the crown. FORMAT: Publisher's photographic wrappers (its only format). EDITION NOTE: The first book in English on Mario Botta. CONDITION DETAIL: Pages: clean and bright, some with a trace tip bend. A small impress mark near fore-edge of the upper wrapper side continues in, but rapidly lessening with only traces after page 18 and disappearing after p. 32. Soiling to rear endpaper is likely intrinsic to issue. Wrappers: clean and bright with light tip wear, the spine with minor crown & foot rubs. Binding: Excellent with a slight spine slant. SIZE: 239 x 220 mm (9.41 x 8.66 inches). PAGINATION: Confirmed complete, 141 pages, includes short chronology and an excellent bibliography, and profusely illustrated with b/w photographs, drawings, and design details with facing text summaries and commentary. Four illustrated black division sheets precede each principal section, 1) Houses, 2) Buildings, 3) Large-Scale Projects and 4) Furniture Designs-Documentation. ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.

Linear Programming: Invited paper presented before the Symposium on Numerical Methods July, 1948, Los Angeles, California.[National Bureau of Standards], 1948. First edition, pre-print.

Extremely rare mimeographed typescript of the paper (published three years later) in which Dantzig gave the first general description of linear programming and his famous 'simplex' method - declared as one of the most important algorithms of the 20th century.<br/><br/> Harvard economist Robert Dorfman, in his paper 'The Discovery of Linear Programming' (Annals of the History of Computing, vol. 6, pp. 283-295, 1984), clearly refers to this 1948 paper by Dantzig as the first in which he discovered the "basic strategy of the simplex method and all its variants, ... Thus Dantzig described the basic step in climbing the beanpole in the summer of 1948", citing the published version of this paper. The contents of this mimeographed typescript is identical to the 1951 publication [also offered her] and is with all probability the version handed out to the attendees of the symposium (National Bureau of Standards) in July 1948 - the first and last page are marked with the rubberstamp of statistician, and specialist in numerical methods, Dr. Clifford J. Maloney (who worked for different governmental institutions) and who would have been a very likely participant at this symposium. <br/><br/> Included is, furthermore, one mimeographed typed sheet being an abstract of (a seemingly unpublished) paper by Dantzig, 'Application of the SEAC to Linear Programming', given before the Association for Computing Machinery, Sept. 7-9, 1950. In 1950 the first solution of the 'transport problem' on a computer was realized by coding the simplex algorithm for the National Bureau of Standards' SEAC digital computer under the auspice of the USAF's Project SCOOP. (See Gass & Assad: Timeline of Operations Research, p.72). The abstract ends with "In addition, the Bereau of Standards has agreed to develop an electronic computer capable of solving large-scale systems of linear inequalities more rapidly than computers currently under construction". This forthcoming computer, which Dantzig mentions, was the UNIVAC I that was installed at the Pentagon in the summer 1952. "The total influence of the Air Force's Project SCOOP is truly amazing. ... George Dantzig and Project SCOOP and the Air Force did not just contribute the linear programming model and the simplex method - what evolved from the Air Force's Project SCOOP changed the way business, industry, government and, especially, the military forces, plan, analyze and carry out their activities". (Peter Horner, Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences). <br/><br/> Dantzig was the recipient of the first Von Neumann Theory Prize "for his work on linear programming". When it was announced that the 1975 Nobel Prize in Economics would be awarded jointly to Kantorovich and Koopmans "for their contributions to the theory of optimum allocation of resources", the later wrote the first that he would deny the prize, as a protest towards the exclusion of Dantzig.<br/><br/> WorldCat lists no copies of the separate 1948 paper..
