Handwritten Manuscript Journal of B.L. Bari Kennedy [Poems] circa 1984

, 1984. 1984 Sacramento, 1984. Handwritten Manuscript Journal of B.L. Kennedy poems. Journal is a black leather-clad general-purpose notebook with "Scorpio" device and lettering in gilt on the cover, also metallic lavender imprinting, and is in about VG condition with bumped corners and spine ends and a hinge crack. Unpaginated, but contains 57 pages in ink, in Kennedy's somewhat floral hand. A collection of handwritten poems and notes by Sacramento counterculture poet and live arts events organizer B.L. "Bari" Kennedy, winner of a Sacramento Lifetime Achievement Award. Never one to shy from muckraking or pot-stirring of any sort, the energetic and charismatic Kennedy here penned thirty-three poems, all in January of 1984, including the handwritten form of the humorous and controversial "My Cock Goes To Hollywood", which outraged readers of the Sutterton News when it appeared there later in 1984. His rather neo-Kerouacian finesse at slightly philosophically softened counterculturalism, developed from his passion for live-performed cafe poetry and expressed in a conceit of humor-mellowed angst, is evident throughout these pieces, which include several dedicated poems, plenty of dry humor and a number of higher-than-PG-13 rated efforts as well. Accompanied by a copy of the April, 1984 Sacramento Magazine, in which he is the subject of a feature article, "Poetry's P.T.Barnum" (in recognition of his tireless and creative promotion of poetry). Magazine is in near fine condition. A nice companion piece to the separately-listed collection of first editions of D.R. Wagner poetry chapbooks, several of which are warmly inscribed to Kennedy, the two having been very close companions. L18

        Manhattan Third Year Reader

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company, 1984. New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 1984. First Edition, one of an edition of only 30 copies, this copy in unique binding, the edition on 28 different papers, each copy signed by the artist / author, Mark Beard. Page size: 15 x 11 inches; 16 signatures. Bound: unique binding by Donald Glaister, his third on this work from Beard and FitzGerald, red and black morocco, with onlays of goat skin and laminated mylar and gold and painted tooling, composed to render a view of the urban landscape, featuring obscured subway cars, altered grid paper imagery and a corrugated leather keystone shape that traverses the spine and extends to both boards. Doublures of painted cork, top edge gilt with eccentric gold shapes echoing shapes found on the covers. Binding signed by the binder, Donald Glaister, 2014, in blind with usual gold dot, on inner rear hinge. Housed in black linen clamshell box. A perfect binding for Beard's recounting of his life in New York.& This is the first of Mark Beard's autobiographical artist's books and consists of 41 original linocuts by Beard which were printed and assembled by Beard and Vincent FitzGerald, executing the work from start to finish without interruption. The result is a work of freshness and originality that is captivating. A total of 28 different kinds of paper were used in the production of this volume, papers that were selected by FitzGerald from an art store each morning on his trip to Beard's loft each morning. The text printing was done by Meriden Gravure and consists of Beard's diary cullings and commentaries from his first three years in New York. In the style of a grade-school primer, the intentionally simple style is a magic carpet for the reader / viewer. We enter the world of the young artist from Utah seeing New York and the New York cultural scene for the first time - with all its attendant wonder and astonishment.& Donald Glaister, one of today's foremost book artists and designer binders, has created a tour de force binding. His bindings, often intricate, employing various materials not associated with fine binding, never lose focus of the book they cover. Here his interpretation of own interpretation of Mark Beard's neo-classic style is fused with his own exuberance and appreciation of New York City. Long out of print, MANHATTAN THIRD YEAR READER, is in the collections of major institutions such as the Met, the Whitney, NYPL, and Yale, and rarely appears on the secondary market.
See an Image.
HOMECOMING

New York: Grove Press, (1984.) . First printing. . Fine in near fine dust jacket (short closed edgetears , sunning to the edges of the back cover of the dj, as is common with this dustjacket.) Still a lovely copy of a very hard to find book. . SIGNED on the title page. Very uncommon hardcover edition of the first book by this writer (who spent her earliest years in her parents' native Dominican Republic) to be published by a major press. Since this was issued simultaneously in both soft and hardcover, the hardcover printing was very small. The central section of these poems is called 'housekeeping; and reconstruct her experiences as her mother teaches her housewifery skills, there is the underlying irony that 'at 33' Alvarez is not the 'heroine of her mother's stories' for she has neither a house, husband nor children. A title in the Grove Press Poetry Series edited by Robert Pack. 93 pp

        The Lost Ones

Stamford: The New Overbrook Press, 1984. Stamford: The New Overbrook Press, 1984 First edition thus, limited edition. One of 250 copies, signed by the author on the colophon. Illustrated by Charles Klabunde. A fine copy with bright pages, printed in Gill Sans typeface on Rives BFK mould made paper; housed in the publisher's beige clamshell box, with the slightest hint of smudging to the rear panel, else fine. The Lost Ones is a story about characters who are trapped in a cylinder and are trying to escape, first published a year after the author received the 1969 Nobel Prize. This English edition was translated from the original French by the author and signed in Paris. Each of the seven illustrations are original etchings, all signed and numbered by the artist, who printed them in his New York City studio. The grotesque beauty of Klabunde's etchings mirror the tragic vitality of Beckett's lost characters. The handmade paper and the carefully chosen typeface, which was designed to complement the signage of the London Underground, add to the beauty of Beckett's narrative. Charles Altshul designed The Lost Ones as an inaugural publication for The New Overbrook Press; Altschul founded the original Overbrook Press, which privately printed fine books from 1934 - 1969. As The Daily Princetonian wrote of The Overbrook Press in 1941, "Every bit of its output has been printed purely for the owner's pleasure with no thought of the expense incurred or of the profit to be derived from its sale." The Lost Ones demonstrates The New Overbrook Press's adherence to this esteemed precedent.. Illus. by Klabunde, Charles. Signed by Author and Illustrator. 1st Edition. Unbound. Fine.

        The Lost Ones

Stamford: The New Overbrook Press, 1984 Stamford: The New Overbrook Press, 1984 First edition thus, limited edition. Unbound. Fine.
