Aphorisms [Death mediates on the high and the low...]

[Santa Monica, California: Lapis Press no date - circa 1984]. First edition. Octavo. 64pp. Perfectbound plain white wrappers. Near fine with some light toning and a bump. A collection of poems/thoughts by abstract painter Sam Francis, founder of Lapis Press. While the trade version of Aphorisms was published in an edition of 600 copies, we have only been able to locate one other copy of it in this larger format issued without a dustwrapper, in the archives of the Sam Francis Foundation. The foundation could not definitively date this variant; its sparse production suggest it is possibly a proof copy. Rare. OCLC locates no copies of this variant (five of the trade edition).

        For Tess

Concord: William B. Ewert. 1984. The second Carver-Ewert collaboration, a much more elaborate production than the first (My Crow). This is a 14" x 20" broadside, produced by Claire Van Vliet using a "paper landscape" approach -- different colors and textures of paper are combined to create the effect of a landscape painting. Carver's touching poem -- a reflection on death and, by contrast, living -- is dedicated to Tess Gallagher. One of 125 numbered copies signed by the author and Claire Van Vliet. A beautiful production. Rolled, else fine. First Edition.

        Book of Doom

Rhinebeck, New York:: Spaceheater Editions,, 1984.. Stated edition of 50 (35 actual). 10.5" x 14" closed, 18" x 25" when fully opened. Hand-cut stencils. Pin-registered spray enamel paint on Rives BFK paper. Bound by Philip Zimmermann with an accordion spine strip. Housed in a custom spray-painted clamshell box. Phil Zimmermann: "Spaceheater Editions published Clifton Meador's BOOK OF DOOM during the summer of 1984, in Rhinebeck, NY, USA. Clif used multiple pin-registered hand-cut stencils to spray enamel paint onto Rives BFK paper. The edition was to have been 50 but only 35 were made. Clif did all of the spraying. [I] made most of the boxes and did all of the bindery work. "Clif's text and images tell a tale of an end-of-millennial apocalyptic journey into the depths of hell. When the pages are flipped over at the end of the book, it forms a downward spiral that is very reminiscent of the circles of Dante's Inferno. "Clifton Meador writes: 'The initial impetus for this book was to complicate the experience of reading a book through an intricate sculptural experience. Like many other artists, I was interested in thinking about a book as a kind of performative sculpture, a complex structure that the reader has to manipulate in order to read it. I wanted to start with a simple story, so I could make the form as complicated as possible while maintaining a narrative thread. It was 1984, so I imagined the end of the world might be an interesting story to complicate. "The governing visual idea was that when the reader had finished unfolding all the pages and the book was completely open, the book structure would resolve into a mandala, with all the pages contributing to a final image. Since the book was about the end of the universe, an apocalypse of plastic and radios, I found medieval manuscripts were an important visual source for this work, and a Spanish-Mozarabic Apocalypse of the tenth century was a particularly rich source of color, pattern, and a flattened sense of space. "At the time I made this book, I had no access to printing equipment, so I produced the edition with pin-registered stencils that I sprayed with four colors of spray paint. When I started this project, I hoped I might be making positive plates from the spray paint separations, but the richness of the spray paint alone convinced me to produce the edition that way. Phil Zimmermann was very supportive of this project, and published it under his Space Heater Editions imprint. The clever spine structure that holds the page units together was an invention of Keith Smith, who took one look at it and saw the right way to put it together.?"

Madrid: Testimonio Compañía Editorial y el Patrimonio Nacional, 1984. Facsimile. Hardcover. Fine. Quarto. Bound in decorative leather with Moorish-styled brass accent studs on board. 30x22 cm. Housed in a grey and black slipcase. Limited edition, this is number 384/750 (of which only 683 were for sale). Written after his third new world voyage (1501-1505), it is a journal of apocalyptic prophecies and observations by the aging explorer as he neared the end of his life. An impeccably done exact replica of the original handwritten copy housed in the Biblioteca Capitular and Columbina in Seville. The artists who prepared the work under the direction of reknowned book artist Cesar Olmos faithfully and painstakingly recreated every nuance from the original: tears, edgewear, silverfishing, and - yes - even tape repairs. A marvellous book, as worthy as an artists' book as a glimpse into history. Does not include the companion study volume. In fine condition (naturally excepting the deliberately contrived "flaws") in a slipcase with one bumped corner and minor edgewear.

The Original Art for the Title Page of the Monkey Wrench Gang

Dream Garden Press, 1984. R. Crumb. The original pen and ink lettering for the title page of The Monkey Wrench Gang, by R. Crumb. The lettering measures 23.5 cm. x 17 cm. Matted and framed and in fine condition. A rare opportunity to own both an R. Crumb original and a Monkey Wrench Gang classic. One of approximately two dozen original drawings that Dream Garden Press commissioned legendary sixties icon and Zap Comix pioneer, R. Crumb to illustrate the tenth anniversary edition of Edward Abbey's equally legendary novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang published in 1985. Abbey's novel has now sold over one million copies and has become, along with Desert Solitaire, what the late author always dreaded, "a classic". The Monkey Wrench Gang inspired the real life radical environmental group, Earth First! and inspired countless other individuals and groups to defend the wilderness. R. Crumb, from his humble beginnings as a greeting card artist in Kansas City, an unlikely sixties icon from his work in Zap Comix, went on to create Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural and is now collected by museums and galleries across the globe. He was the subject of the Terry Zwigoff documentary Crumb (1994), and shortly thereafter, traded a sketchbook of original drawings for a chateau in France, where he has lived with his family ever since.
