        Neuromancer

New York: Ace Science Fiction Books,, 1984. Octavo. Original wrappers, yellow endpapers and edges. Spine slightly creased, extremities very slightly worn, text block lightly toned. Otherwise an excellent copy. First edition, first printing, signed by the author on the title page "To Neal, Best, Wm. Gibson". This paperback edition precedes the UK hardback edition published by Victor Gollancz by two months. The first winner of the "triple crown" — the Nebula, Hugo and Philip K Dick Awards — Neuromancer is the most famous and enduring "cyperpunk novel". It was a landmark in modern science fiction writing and its cultural impact is still widely felt.

Vintage Silver Gelatin Photograph of Jean-Michel Basquiat

New York: np, 1984. First edition. Fine. LARGE, LIMITED VINTAGE SILVER GELATIN PHOTOGRAPH OF BASQUIAT FROM 1984. ONE OF ONLY TWO VINTAGE PRINTS PRODUCED OF AN ICONIC BASQUIAT PORTRAIT. Trained under Richard Avedon, the photographer Richard Corman has been one of the most celebrated portrait photographers of the last thirty years. Rolling Stone refers to his photographs as "iconic" and documentarian Ken Burns says Corman's versatile body of work is an "artistic vision dedicated to the highest aspirations of human endeavor... the photographs record in big moments and small, among the famous and ordinary, the gifted and challenged, larger truths relevant to all of us." Corman's 1984 photo session with the 23-year old Jean-Michel Basquiat at Basquiat's Great Jones St. studio produced wonderfully evocative images of the now legendary artist. As Corman explains: "In 1984, I was asked to photograph Jean Michel Basquiat for L'Uomo Vogue. When I walked into the artist's loft I was immediately engulfed by a wave of creative confusion. The room was a swirl of people, paint, canvas, color, and smoke. Off in the corner was Basquiat, submerged and almost invisible. "I tried to be as prepared as possible for my shoot, but until I had walked into his studio, I was really entering the unknown. His space was packed with people - Jean-Michel attracted people for all kinds of reasons. He was charismatic, beautiful, a bit haunting and a genius in his own right. There was just a wonderfully crazy energy of smoke and people and music and painting. It was messy and cool in the best way. I decided to kind of isolate him in the photos from the chaos. For me, that's what makes these pictures so interesting - the focus is on him, instead of the mad energy surrounding him. "All I had with me was a twin lens Rolleiflex camera, one strobe, and a 4-foot-wide grey seamless paper. I hung it up, had him stand in front of it, and began taking pictures. I would say he was comfortable, uncomfortable, angry, curious, and intense. He just created his own space and energy, and I followed it... His hands, eyes, and body language were so expressive, and he revealed so much through his luminous presence. "For me, as a young photographer, and even 30 years later, I'm always looking to find someone's story behind their eyes, and in his own way, Jean-Michel shared that with me. It was kind of magical, even though I didn't know what I had at the time. I didn't know who I was photographing, other than someone with a unique soul and spirit. I felt how multi-layered he was. His presence was quiet yet mesmerizing." The vintage photographs from this photoshoot are exceedingly scarce. Corman printed "a few" of his favorites for his portfolio at the time, including two of this image. Signed, dated, and numbered ("2/2") by Corman on the verso. New York: 1984. Size: Image = 16x16 inches; framed 23x25 inches. In stunning archival, hand-painted frame with museum plexi-glass. Fine condition.

        Graffiti on black leather coat.

New York, 1984 - Marker pen and ink on black leather coat. An exceptional collaboration. Keith Haring contributes three drawings, a dark green figure diving head first from the right of the collar, a dark green snake on the left lapel and a larger light green dancing lightbulb man to the jacket back; Futura adds a large old school tag above Haring in white on the back, a spraycan character drawing on the right lapel, and his tag in green on the left lapel; Fab 5 Freddy takes the left arm in green and dates his tag 1984; Cey draws a stylish "C" outline in silver, dated 1984 to the back and tags in silver on the left lapel; Kano (who went on to be one of the most influential A&R representatives in hip hop, working for Tommy Boy, Elektra and Warner) draws a character and tags "Kano love" & "Fresh Kidd" in silver on the back of the right sleeve; Stash contributes several drawings to the back in green including a character and TV screen, also a "Destiny" (Destroy Every Subway Train in New York) outline in green to the bottom left front and possibly the "joystick" outline in pink and green above (although this has futura-esque highlights and elements); Energy (NRG) and Africa131 (Cmor / Afrochild) also tag. There is a silver full body character underneath the front lapel and a couple of other tags that as yet we are unable to attribute. An exceptional artwork bringing together the elite movers and shakers of the 1980s art and club scene. Joy "Joystick" Bouldin was a key figure in the New York club scene of the early 1980s. Aged 18, she arrived in New York and, eschewing her plans to go to college, found work at the Mudd Club. Here she was befriended by Andy Warhol, who introduced her to his inner circle, including Jean-Michel Basquiat (for whom she modelled) and Keith Haring. In 1982 she quit her job in a law firm to "work the elevator" at Danceteria. Deciding who to let in to the private club gave her a key position at the forefront of the emerging culture of the time, positioned at the intersection between fashion, Pop Art, Hip Hop and graffiti. Like key door-people everywhere, Joy knew everyone and everyone knew her. She came up with the idea of having the best known and most applauded graffiti writers, pop artists and musicians tag or draw on her clothing as they came in and out of the club. In doing so she created a wearable original artwork, merging fashion, art and music that now also serves as a significant historical document. This is just one item of the many items of clothing she got signed. "Keith Haring. actually got down on his knees because of my height and drew this [light bulb character]. I could feel him etching against my back. This is not an image that you see replicated if you were to look at [Haring's] body of work, so it really speaks to his improvisation and the spirit of where we were at that particular time on that night." - Joy Bouldin. This was Joy's favourite jacket and the one she considered the most important. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
