        LOST ONES.|THE

Stamford: The New Overbrook Press, 1984. loose signatures, cloth clamshell box. Klabunde, Charles S.. folio. loose signatures, cloth clamshell box. 35, (3) pages in addition to 7 full page etchings. Printed in an edition limited to 250 copies signed by Samuel Beckett. Beckett requested that The New Overbrook Press edition include certain alterations to The Lost Ones which make it the definitive version of his work. The author translated the text from the original French version, Le Depeupleur. Illustrated with seven etchings hand-numbered and signed by the artist, Charles Klabunde. Charles Klabunde, master engraver, was born in Nebraska where he spent the first two formative decades of his life. He obtained his MFA at the University of Iowa where his unusual talents were discovered by master print-maker Mauricio Lazansky who invited Klabunde to join his Print Workshop. Following his one-man exhibition at The Minneapolis Institute of Art, the artist moved to New York where he established his own printmaking studio and taught at Cooper Union. His work was prominently featured in the 1969 Associated American Artists' "New Talent in Printmaking" Exhibition and in 1970 in "five New York Printmakers" at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 1971, he received the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. His works are represented in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The National Gallery, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliothèque Nationale etc. Klabunde's imagery and iconography, although highly individualistic, is often traced from the work of Bosch, Durer, Breughel, Callot, Rembrandt, Blake, Goya, Meryon, Redon, Klinger, Ensor, Magritte, Klee and Picasso. Samuel Beckett received the Nobel Prize in 1969 and great attention was focused on his next work, The Lost Ones, which was his most sustained narrative to have appeared for many years. "Inside a flattened cylinder fifty metres round and sixteen high" live Beckett's lost people. Their relentless search for an escape from the cylinder gives The Lost Ones a tragic force as a mirror of our own existence. The publisher, Charles Altschul, designed this limited edition as the inaugural offering of The New Overbrook Press.

        Fiorucci Stickers

Modena: Edizioni Panini S.p.A., 1984. Stickers are un-peeled and intact with original backings; near fine overall.. Two hundred sequentially numbered loose stickers. Produced by the iconic Italian fashion label, the 1984 stickers are a memorable high point in Fiorucci's graphic pop post modernism. The stickers are organized into six themes: Fiorucci Story, Dance, Electron, Romance, Pin-Up and Swim. "Fiorucci Story" is notable for the profusion of some 52 signature images the brand used instead of any single fixed logo. Electron, a series of often abstracted electronic devices and circuitry, features many images designed on the brand new Apple Macintosh by an uncredited Christoph Radl, designer and typographer with the Memphis Group of architects and designers. All of the themes work within the decidedly postmodern graphic idiom of 1950s American kitsch filtered through an ironic, post punk, new wave and science fiction aesthetic familiar from underground comix such as Raw Magazine.

        Les intellectuels en question

First Edition printed small number of this reprinted from the journal of Pierre Nora, The Debate. Precious autograph signed by the author to his sister "... for you, this little reading and to help you cheer up." Marguerite Blanchot, renowned organist Chalon Cathedral, remained all his life in the family home with his mother and aunt. "It will gradually become, for the family, as the memory of origins." Very close to Maurice, she regularly corresponded with the writer who reflects him great recognition for his dedication to their helpless mother. If intense affection Blanchot for his mother and his sister shines in dedications of it, we know almost nothing of their relations. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot, Christophe Bident reveals, however: "Marguerite Maurice Blanchot worshiped his brother very proud of him, (...) it attached great importance to his political ideas (...) She read a lot (.... .) They phoned corresponded. A distance, they shared the same natural authority, the same concern for discretion. " Blanchot address him indeed many books from his library, now with her continuous intellectual link. As the passion of Blanchot for his mother, it is the turn of his work that we discover the finest examples: "Maybe the power of the mother figure she borrows its brightness to the same power fascination, and one could say that if the mother carries this fascinating attraction is as appearing when the child lives entirely under the gaze of fascination, it concentrates in itself all the powers of enchantment ". Cultivating absolute discretion, Blanchot pushed the art of erasing into his handwritten dedications generally brief and almost always written on cards attached to the rare books he offered his close friends. In contrast, in these precious items to his mother and sister, Blanchot offers in all its fragility and, in the privacy of this correspondence, his work focuses on a previously unknown personal look. A small tear at the top of the back. In Le journal des débats N°29 Paris Mars 1984 18,5x26,5cm agrafé

President Ronald Reagan writes about his family tree ? <i>?I?m so used to not believing anything I read in the ?Enquirer? ? But I have to confess the story is true. Don?t worry, it all goes back several hundred years or more and as the story said, the more recent Reagans were nice, hardworking poor people ? Now that I know you are a government bondholder, I?ll have to take care of things and keep the country solvent ??</i>

Typed Letter Signed ?Dutch? as President, 1 page, 7? x 10.5?. The White House, Washington, June 27, 1984. To Mrs. Peter MacArthur, Lake Worth, Florida. Blind embossed presidential seal at top center. With original 7.25? x 3.5? postmarked White House envelope, slit open at top. Fine condition. Mrs. Peter MacArthur was 91-year-old Lydia Hupfer ?Hup? McArthur (1893-1995), widow of the man who had given Reagan his first job after college. Peter MacArthur was the program director at radio station WOC in Davenport, Iowa, which shared its frequency with WHO Des Moines. In 1932, MacArthur gave 21-year-old recent Eureka College grad Ronald ?Dutch? Reagan a sports announcer?s job at WOC. In 1937, sportscaster Reagan went to the Chicago Cubs spring training camp in southern California to do play-by-play for WHO Des Moines. Impressed by his confidence and good looks, an agent arranged a screen test for the 26-year-old sports announcer at Warner Bros. Reagan signed a seven-year contract and moved to California. But he never forgot Pete and Hup MacArthur whom he affectionately called ?Ma? and ?Pa? (?Maw & Paw,? ?Mom & Pop?). He sent Christmas cards and letters to them on a regular basis from 1938 until 1948 when Pete died, continuing to correspond with Hup until she died in 1995 at 101. In full, ?Dear Hup: Thank heaven other papers printed that story about my family tree. I?m so used to not believing anything I read in the ?Enquirer,? I would have worried. But I have to confess the story is true. You know, I never knew anything about my father?s family because he was an orphan by the time he was six years old. Now that I have this job, the Burke?s Peerage people went to work and dug all this up. Don?t worry, it all goes back several hundred years or more and as the story said, the more recent Reagans were nice, hardworking poor people. ?Hup, I probably won?t be anywhere near Washington around Labor Day -- it will be campaign time. If Dotty [Hup?s good friend Dotty Green] should have the time and want to tour the White House, have her get in touch with Kathy Osborne in my office. Well, I?ll get back to work. Now that I know you are a government bondholder, I?ll have to take care of things and keep the country solvent. Love, Dutch.? On June 3, 1984, three weeks earlier, President Reagan had visited Ballyporeen Ireland, the small village from which his great grandfather Michael Reagan emigrated in the early 1820s. The Associated Press reported, in part, ?Explaining that he had not known much about his family tree because his father was orphaned as a child, Reagan said, ?Now, thanks to you and efforts of good people who have dug into the history of a poor immigrant family, I know, at last, whence I came ...?

Postage increased to 22¢ on February 17, 1985, so the 20¢ stamp indicates Mantle signed this letter in 1984 or early 1985.

London, England:: Ken Campbell,, 1984.. Edition of 50. 9.25 x 13.5"; 68 concertina-folded pages. Formed from 17 joined sheets as one long strip, pasted onto heavy endboards of varnished wood, in a cloth slipcase. Silkscreened by Jim Birnie at Norwich School of Art on Heritage Rag acid-free paper. Ken Campbell: "''I wrote and artworked the book in three parallel and overlapping lines that run its length disregarding the concertina folds. The centre line records a conversation that took place between 'A' and 'B'. It stands as a proposition for a piece of sculpture, and also floats whisky on 'an ocean made of paper.' The other two lines help or hinder the progress of this notion: all three lines are in expanded or condensed woodletter forms deployed to assist this book's stammering progress from left to right. "I had two cases of woodletter, of different printing heights: one Anglo-American, an extra fatfaced serif; the other Didot, a Continental sans serif, very condensed and beautiful. They were so different in their respective fatness and thinness that they represented the polar ends of type design. As an act of cussedness I thought to do a book that brings the two together and see what happens. A formal problem to run ragged the poetry to come. Then I thought of an ocean made of paper; 'think of an ocean, think of a notion.' The text followed a conversation between 'A' (me) and 'B' (Bruce Brown, in brown). We were discussing Borgesian convolutions. We began thus: A: 'Think of a sea.' B: 'You mean the letter?' A: 'No an ocean made of paper...' The conversation continued and I wrote it down. This was the first time I had generated text for a specific book. Up to that point the books had been slim volumes of verse attempting to break out of that mould.
