Edinburgh: The Tragara Press, 1984 - 2 copies, octavo. Unbound proof copy, together with first proof. Loose octavo quires in original white wrappers printed in black. A crisp copy in excellent condition. First separate edition, unnumbered proof copy from a limited edition of 12 numbered copies, together with first proof with publisher's corrections in red ink. This edition of D. H. Lawrence's poem was published to mark the 80th birthday of George Lazarus, whose collection of Lawrence books and manuscripts was bequeathed to Nottingham University. This copy is from the library of John K. Martin (born 1930), with his book label tipped-in on the limitation page. Martin is the owner of the Black Sparrow Press and publisher of Charles Bukowski, amongst many other avant-garde and counterculture authors. He started collecting modern first editions when he was 19, focusing on the works of Lawrence, Faulkner, Pound and Henry Miller. When Martin sold his collection to the University of California in 1966 it had grown to include the Beat poets. Martin used the proceeds from the sale to start the Black Sparrow Press. "Snake" originally appeared as part of Lawrence's collection of poems, Birds, Beasts and Flowers, which was first published in the US in 1923. Roberts & Poplawski A131.

        The Ghostway (True First Edition)

Dennis McMillan 1984 - This is the McMillan limited edition that was subtitled The Door Into Darkness. Fine unread book in a Fine minus jacket that has a tiny ding to front panel that is within the purple cloud and barely noticeable. This is copy 114 of 300 such copies and is signed by Hillerman on the limitation page. This is the only limited, First Edition of a Hillerman Navajo mystery to be issued by a publisher other than Harper. I’m not quite sure how Dennis pulled this off, but it makes this edition of the Ghostway a collectors’ high spot. The unusual, wrap-around jacket was done by Chista Cantu. This edition appeared a year before the Harper trade edition was published in 1985 and is the true first printing of this novel. This is the third Navajo mystery featuring Jim Chee.       New York: Original Artwork. 1984. Keith Haring . . . actually got down on his knees because of my height and drew this [light bulb character]. I could feel him etching against my back. This is not an image that you see replicated if you were to look at [Haring's] body of work, so it really speaks to his improvisation and the spirit of where we were at that particular time on that night." - Joy Bouldin. Marker Pen and ink on a black leather jacket. 1984. An exceptional collaboration artwork. Keith Haring contributes three drawings, a dark green figure diving head first from the right lapel, a dark green snake on the left lapel and a larger light green dancing lightbulb man to the jacket back; Futura adds a large old school tag above Haring in white on the back, a spraycan character drawing underneath Haring on the right lapel, and the scribble tag in green on the left lapel; Fab 5 Freddy takes the left arm in green and dates his tag 1984; Cey draws a stylish "C" outline in silver, dated 1984 to the back and tags in silver on the left lapel; Kano (who went on to be one of the most influential A&R representatives in hip hop working for Tommy Boy, Elektra and Warner) draws a character and tags "Kano love" & "Fresh Kidd" in silver of the back of the right sleeve; Stash contributes several drawings to the back in green including a character and tv screen, also a "destiny" (DestroyEverySubwayTrainInNewYork) outline in green to the bottom left front and possibly the "joystick" outline in pink and green above (although this has futura-esque highlights and elements); Energy (NRG) and Africa131 (Cmor / Afrochild) also tag. There is a silver full body character underneath the front lapel and a couple of other tags that as yet we are unable to attribute. An exceptional artwork bringing together the elite movers and shakers of the 1980 art and club scene. This was Joy's favourite jacket and the one she considered the most important. Provenance: Joy "Joystick" Bouldin. Joy was a key figure in the New York club scene of the early 1980s. Aged 18, she arrived in New York and, eschewing her plans to go to college, found work at the Mudd Club. Here she was befriended by Andy Warhol, who introduced her to his inner circle, including Jean-Michel Basquiat (for whom she modelled) and Keith Haring. In 1982 she quit her job in a law firm to "work the elevator" at Danceteria. Deciding who to let in to the private club gave her a key position at the forefront of the emerging culture of the time, positioned at the intersection between fashion, Pop Art, Hip Hop and graffiti. Like key door-people everywhere, Joy knew everyone and everyone knew her. She came up with the idea of having the best known and most applauded graffiti writers, pop artists and musicians tag or draw on her clothing as they came in and out of the club. In doing so she created a wearable original artwork merging fashion, art and music that now also serves as a significant historical document. The stories are rich and startling in their matter and confident and eloquent in their manner...They are the word cannot be avoided--magical" (John Updike, The New Yorker).

Dust jacket also Near Fine with a faint crease on the rear flap and light bends at the crown. INSCRIBED by Clancy on the half-title, "First Edition! Tom Clancy." Tom Clancy's thrilling debut novel. "The Hunt for Red October" is about Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst who attempts to help Soviet officers defect to the United States with a top secret nuclear submarine. Jack Ryan would return in numerous other Clancy novels, including "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger." Clancy hadn't been able to get the book published by any large publishing house, so he sent it to the Naval Institute Press (on a lark) who then agreed to publish it. Unsurprisingly, it has been their most successful published work of fiction. The book would become a best-seller after Ronald Reagan praised it as a "perfect yarn." "The Hunt for Red October" would go on to be adapted into a 1990 film, starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin. "Absolutely terrific: entertaining, suspenseful and masterfully written! superlative." (Contemporary Washington Times review). Very Good + in Near Fine. dust jacket.

In a splendid custom binding by Canadian bookbinder and marbled paper artist, Robert Wu. The book and the prints are designated as artist's proofs and each signed by the artist and designer Alan James Robinson. His eleven wood engravings perfectly capture this torment - they are almost too painful to see. In a unique black Moroccan leather binding with color inlays and gold finishes that are representative of Wu's imaginative and painstaking work. With hand-marbled end papers.
