London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1984 - Octavo, boards. First British (and first hardcover) edition.         One Average Day: Oregon Project Dayshoot Photographs, 15 July 1983.

Western Imprints/Oregon Historical Society Press, U.S.A. 1984 - Office. The book is straight, tight with an inscription on title page and no other marks found. This book is the result of a collaboration among photojournalists and freelance photographers to visually document a day in the life of Oregon, and is a distillation of photographs taken during Project Dayshoot on 15 July 1983. It is easily one of the most ambitious photojournalistic projects accomplished in Oregon. The collective effect behind Project Dayshoot grew out of a 1982 group exhibit by nearly three dozen Portland-area newspaper photographers. An exceptional piece of work! Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit environmental restoration and education. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        26 eigenh. Briefe mit U.

Gauting vor München und Marchtrenk, 14.VI. 1975-5.VIII. 1984. - Zusammen 46 SS. Meist 4to. (Br. v. 3. VIII. 1980). - "Darf F[ranz] J[osef] A[ltenburg] [geb. 1941] mitkommen? Faust: A Dramatic Poem. Translated into English prose, with remarks on former translations, and notes, by the translator of Savigny`s \"Of the Vocation of Our Age for Legislation and Jurisprudence\".

London, Edward Moxon, 1833. 8vo. 3 Bll., LXXXVII, 291 S., Errata & Corrigenda. Goethes \"Faust. - First Edition of the first complete translation of Faust into English, by Abraham Hayward. The prose translation is accompanied by a substantial and valuable critical introduction on previous efforts to English the poem and 83 pages of notes. - Sehr schöner Zustand. Versand D: 2,00 EUR

Oriental Field Sports; Being a Complete, Detailed, and Accurate Description of the Wild Sports of the East; and Exhibiting, in a Novel and Interesting Manner, the Natural History of the Elephant, the Rhinoceros, the Tiger, the Leopard [ ] The Whole Taken from the Manuscript and Designs of Captain Thomas Williamson the Drawings by Samuel Howitt.

Norfolk: Antony Atha Publishers Ltd, 1984 - Oblong quarto. Bound in the publisher's red half morocco, red cloth sides, spine lettered and decorated gilt, single gilt rules to covers, red endpapers, top edge gilt. Housed in the publisher's red solander box. A very attractive, bright copy. 40 colour plates. Limited issue, number 40 of 350 copies. An attractive facsimile of the original 1807 edition of "the most beautiful book on Indian sport in existence" (Schwerdt). Howitt "is first recorded as having a property at Chigwell, in Essex, and living as a gentleman of means—a keen sportsman, hunter, rider, and angler. A self-taught artist, he turned professional when financial difficulties forced him to earn a living. He drew on his enthusiasm and knowledge as a sportsman and produced sporting and natural history paintings, etchings, and illustrations. He sometimes worked in oils but more frequently in watercolours, and he was an accomplished etcher [he] had an innate capacity for drawing animals, from commonplace hare and deer to exotic species that he studied in menageries. He was an animated draughtsman, and his drawings of hunts and sporting events have a fluidity and excitement fitting to the subject" (ODNB). Williamson had served for 20 years in Bengal, and here describes his "pig-sticking adventures; shooting tigers from machans and elephant back, hunting buffalo, driving hogs, bears and wolves; and shooting peacocks and other game" creating "a benchmark in capturing the sporting bibliophile's imagination" (Czech). Abbey Travel 427 (1807 edition); Czech p. 228; Schwerdt II, p. 298 (1807 & 1808).

        Telex Persan.

Contrejour, Paris 1984 - First French edition, published simultaneously with the American edition of the photojournalist's first book. Folio, original stiff photographic wrappers, photographic endpapers. Inscribed by the photographer, Gilles Peress. In fine condition. Peress described his art well when he said, "I work much more like a forensic photographer in a certain way, collecting evidence. I've started to take more still lifes, like a police photographer, collecting evidence as a witness. I've started to borrow a different strategy than that of the classic photojournalist. The work is much more factual and much less about good photography. I don't care that much anymore about "good photography." I'm gathering evidence for history, so that we remember" (U.S. News). "Telex Iran chronicles the crisis in United States-Iran relations in late 1979 and early 1980 when militant Iranian students seized the American Embassy and held its inhabitants hostage. Peress’ book is oversized, graphically bold and provides numerous perspectives on an extremely sensitive political problem Along with reportage of major political events, Peress’ pictures record mundane spaces, places, people and moments of Iranian life in order to emphasize the incomprehensibility and confusion of the environment before his eyes. In this way the photographer is able to visualize precisely the culture gap that made such a historical misunderstanding possible. It is a brilliant tactic" (Roth, 28).         Monica Poole: Wood Engraver

Biddenden: Florin Press, 1984. No. 229 of 250 standard copies, signed by the editor Graham Willliams and the artist. 20 wood engravings by Monica Poole and one by George Mackley. Printed by hand in Optima type on Basingwerk parchment paper, which Monica Poole chose for many of her editions. Folio, bound in quarter cloth with Fabriano Ingres paper covered boards by Smith Settle, spine lettered in gilt on black strip. An extremely good copy. Monica Poole (1921-2003) was a superb British wood engraver who trained under Noel Rooke and John Farleigh at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. She was enormously talented but not very prolific so her engravings were eagerly snapped up whenever they appeared on the market. This is a chance to see her beautiful work in one place.

        Monica Poole: Wood Engraver

Biddenden: Florin Press, 1984. One of 50 special copies with 14 extra engravings.. No.49 of 50 special copies, signed by the editor Graham Willliams. 33 wood engravings by Monica Poole and one by George Mackley. Folio, in a special binding of quarter tan morocco with linen covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, housed in the original brown cloth slipcase, label with Poole wood engraving on upper board.

PAPA: A PLAY BASED ON THE LEGENDARY LIVES OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY - ORIGINAL PLAY SCRIPT FOR THE ONE-MAN, OFF-BROADWAY PLAY, WITH TLS AND ACCOMPANYING PROGRAM FOR THE PREMIERE AT THE COLONY THEATER

Fort Lauderdale, FL: S.i., 1984. First Edition. Quarto; printed sheets (rectos only), comb-bound into illustrated card wrappers; [vi], 87, [8]pp. Inscribed by de Groot to a rare bookseller on the title page and dated 1988. Holograph date of "Jan.'88" in ink to upper right corner of title page and front wrapper, else Fine. Laid in is a 1-page TLS from de Groot to the recipient, discussing rights to the play, changes to the script, and the play's premiere in Miami, FL, along with an inquiry regarding signed Hemingway books for sale. Together with the original mailing envelope and a Fine copy of the 8pp program for the play's premiere at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach, FL. Self-published draft of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist's play, set in Hemingway's home in Cuba during the 1950's. In addition to working for south Florida's Sun Sentinel, de Groot was also a member of the award-winning team that covered the Kent State shootings in 1970. de Groot's depiction of Hemingway relied more on "the man and his exploits" than his literary legacy, and the play was a result of his life-long fascination with the author. The play premiered at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach in 1987, starring veteran Miami-based actor William Hindman as Hemingway. Ten years later the play ran for 73 performances at the Douglas Fairbanks Theater in New York, directed by John Henry Davis and starring Len Cariou as Hemingway. Rare; we find no copies for sale in the trade (as of August 2015), and while OCLC notes 2 later editions of the play (1988, by Lime Tree Productions, and 1989, by the Hemingway Western Studies Center, Boise State University), this self-published edition is not found in the holdings of any member institution.
