Electa / Rizzoli, New York, English, translated from Italian 1984 - OFFERING: An extraordinary pre-publication presentation by Mario Botta for an unnamed recipient, made about a month before public release. It anticipates by five years some of his 1989 Central Atrium and Floor Plan & Section sketches for the striking, circle and square central tower design of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), his acclaimed first U.S. commission, final plans-1990, open to the public-1995. Fine condition.Accompanied by a photocopy of the letter which accompanied this document from Governor Clinton to Mr. A.L. Lockhart, Director, Arkansas Department of Correction, Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The document, in part, ""Whereas Darryl W. Richley was duly presented under proper proceedings to the Circuit Court of Benton County, Arkansas, on a charge of Capital Murder, and, after being tried in that Court by a duly empaneled jury, was found guilty and his sentence and punishment fixed at death by electrocution; and Whereas the conviction having been appealed to the Supreme Court of Arkansas; and, upon review of this case, the judgment and sentence of the Circuit Court of Benton County, Arkansas, was affirmed…""Now, Therefore, I, Bill Clinton, by virtue of the power and authority vested in me by law as Governor of the State of Arkansas, do hereby set June 29, 1984, between the hours of sunrise and sunset as the day and date upon which the Commissioner of the Arkansas Department of Correction will carry into effect the judgment and sentence of the Benton County Circuit Court by executing the said Darryl V. Richley at the place and in the manner prescribed by law…""Three men and a fourth defendant were tried together and convicted of killing a contractor, Donald Lehman, on January 9, 1981, in a robbery at his home in Rogers, Arkansas. At the time, Richley was 29 years old. All four were sentenced to death but the sentence for the fourth man, Michael Orndorff, was struck down in 1990; he was then sentenced to life in prison. The constitutionality of the joint trial was one of the issues argued during more than 12 years of appeals. After numerous appeals, including the U.S. Supreme Court which rejected arguments they were treated like ""hogs at a slaughter,"" on August 3, 1994, Darryl V. Richley, now 43, Hoyt Clines, 37, and James Holmes, 37, were each injected with a fatal mixture of chemicals. "

New York: St. Martin's Press, 1984. First Edition. Octavo; dark yellow wrappers printed in black; 190pp. Inscribed by Leonard on the half-title page: "To Ian Clark / from a friend of Chas. Willeford / Elmore Leonard." Trifle wear to extremities, slight upward life to front wrapper, with faint spotting to rear wrapper; Very Good+ to Near Fine. Scarce uncorrected proof copy of Willeford's first Hoke Moseley novel. Though Willeford's career started in the late 1940's, fame came to him later in life, and that fame was brought about by the publication of 'Miami Blues.' Among the highest advance praise for his novel came from Elmore Leonard, who wrote: "Willeford, writing with quiet authority, has the ability to make his situations, scenes, dialogue, sound absolutely real. No one writes a better crime novel than Charles Willeford." A uniquely-inscribed copy by one of Willeford's earliest advocates, and the only proof copy we have seen for this title. Basis for the 1990 George Armitage film starring Alec Baldwin, Fred Ward, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Angry Typed Letter Signed on personal stationery

Lebanon, OH, 1984. unbound. 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, Lebanon, Ohio, October 26, 1984. In this strongly-worded letter, Armstrong takes exception with the Editor of Guideposts, who decided to interview Armstrong's mother for an article that contained numerous errors, in part: "The story you referred to is certainly not my story. It was apparently based on an interview with my mother. After the story was originally brought to my attention, shortly after its publication, I asked my mother if she was responsible for the many errors of fact and misquotes in the article. She assured me she was not. It was unbelievable to me that Guideposts would print unverified quotations from a quarter century earlier. I could only conclude that policy and integrity of the magazine was akin to that of the National Enquirer. I am unable to think of any condition under which I would approve text or collaborate in any way with Guideposts." Note: Guideposts, a Christian faith-based publication, was started in 1945 by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. Natural folds; very good condition.         The Films of Gregory Peck (First Edition, inscribed to Judith Crist)

Secaucus, NJ: The Citadel Press, 1984. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Gregory Peck to film critic and academic Judith Crist, who provides the introduction: "For Judith / With great appreciation and warm regards / Gregory Peck." Laid in are two very interesting pieces of ephemera: a photocopy of a rave review from The Columbus Dispatch, with a holograph ink notation from John Griggs to Crist: "Dear J.C. / Received this from Peck the other day and thought you'd enjoy seeing it as much as I did / LXXX / JG" and a copy of "Judith Crist's Oscar Pool 1992," something of an internal document, that includes two mentions of Peck's final acting role, the 1991 remake of "Cape Fear" by Martin Scorsese. Judith Crist was the first full-time female film critic for an American newspaper, the New York Herald Tribune, the founding film critic at New York magazine, and in her later years, well known as the film critic for TV Guide. She appeared in Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories" (1980), and authored several collections of essays on film and interviews with filmmakers. Though more a populist, she very much paved the way for Pauline Kael, as she refused to be influenced by any opinion but her own, and could be quite blunt in her assessments of films. Billy Wilder once said that asking her to review a film was like "asking the Boston Strangler for a neck massage," and Otto Preminger simply referred to her as "Judas Crist." In her foreword here, Crist makes clear her absolute fondness for the archetypal style that Peck created, moving through a huge variety of groundbreaking characters while maintaining a staunch core integrity, best exemplified by his role as one of the first Western anti-heroes in "The Gunfighter" (1950), the anti-Cary Grant in "Roman Holiday" (1953), and the anti-father in "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1963). Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Jacket has a lightly faded spine and a few tiny nicks at the extremities, else quite bright.

The CIVIL warS: A Tree Is Best Measured When It Is Down | Teatro dell'Opera di Roma (Original poster for the premiere of the Rome movement of the 1984 opera)

Rome: Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, 1984. Original poster for the 1984 opera directed by Robert Wilson with music by Philip Glass, David Byrne, Gavin Bryars, and others, as performed at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in March of 1984. "The CIVIL warS" was originally conceived as six movements, created in six different countries, that once premiered in their countries of origin would then be joined together into a daylong opera for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. However, after adequate funding never surfaced for the project, the piece remained incomplete and is now known only for its five completed sections. It has never been performed whole. This poster is for the Rome movement, with music composed by Philip Glass. During the piece, the Earth Mother and a Snow Owl join Abraham Lincoln in a prayer for peace. It then includes appearances from Giuseppe Garibaldi, Hopi dancers, Robert E. Lee, Seneca the Younger, and Mary Todd Lincoln. Glass composed the music late in the process, after Wilson had already completed a silent staging of the opera. 33 x 24 inches, rolled. Fine condition.

        Telex Persan.

Paris: Contrejour, 1984. First French edition, published simultaneously with the American edition of the photojournalist's first book. Folio, original stiff photographic wrappers, photographic endpapers. Inscribed by the photographer, Gilles Peress. In fine condition. Peress described his art well when he said, "I work much more like a forensic photographer in a certain way, collecting evidence. I've started to take more still lifes, like a police photographer, collecting evidence as a witness. I've started to borrow a different strategy than that of the classic photojournalist. The work is much more factual and much less about good photography. I don't care that much anymore about "good photography." I'm gathering evidence for history, so that we remember" (U.S. News). "Telex Iran chronicles the crisis in United States-Iran relations in late 1979 and early 1980 when militant Iranian students seized the American Embassy and held its inhabitants hostage. Peress?' book is oversized, graphically bold and provides numerous perspectives on an extremely sensitive political problem Along with reportage of major political events, Peress?' pictures record mundane spaces, places, people and moments of Iranian life in order to emphasize the incomprehensibility and confusion of the environment before his eyes. In this way the photographer is able to visualize precisely the culture gap that made such a historical misunderstanding possible. It is a brilliant tactic" (Roth, 28). Open Book, 330; Parr and Badger II, 252.

PEONIES OF GREECE. (portfolio of limited edition signed lithographic Prints with additional unique proofs]

Kifissia, Greece: Goulandris Natural History Museum, , 1984, 1984. One of the finest modern botanical works with elephant folio lithographic plates of outstanding quality. This copy belonged to Professor Stearn and includes a number of proof plates and exhibition poster as described below. This portfolio of prints is now scarce and rarely offered. "These twelve coloured lithographs reproduce natural size paintings by Niki Goulandris of the members of the genus Paeonia native to Greece and gathered in their natural habitat. The engraver Takis Katsoulidis made all lithographs by hand between June 1981 and September 1983. Printed on Arjomari-Prioux Velin Arches by J. Scaramangas and A. Constantinidis in a limited number edition of 300 copies in English and 200 copies in Greek. Text is set by E. Kaliakatos and printed by J. Makris S. A. The portfolio is hand bound by A. C. Ganiaris. Accompanying descriptive text is published in 'Peonies of Greece, A Taxonomic and Historical Survey' By William T. Stearn and Peter. H. Davis. Published by the Goulandris Natural History Museum Kiffisia 1983. No. 142." Each plate is signed and numbered by the artist in pencil and protected by a tissue guard, with separate title, half title, contents and colophone leaves. In addition to the standard contents there are 5 proof sheets of plates, one with a b/w proof impression to the reverse; these are early proofs without titles, but with a few manuscript notes. Also with the portfolio is a large (A1) colour poster advertising an exhibition for the American Museum of Natural History New York Naturemax Gallery 1st floor 11 May- 12 August 1984, the exhibi tion entitled " PEONIES OF GREECE MYTH SCIENCE AND ART". A number of the additional proof plates are worn to the edges and a little marked, but the 12 signed plates are all in excellent condition, a couple of the tissue guards lightly creased at the lower edge, the large advertising poster is quite worn, a little marked and with several creases. The portfolio is a little rubbed to edges with a small stain to the rear. A superb and unique item. [Provenance: from the library of Prof. William Stearn, "doyen of British botanists" who wrote c. 500 papers and books, including the classic "Botanical Latin". He was an authority on Linnaeus and an expert on botanical illustration.]. Signed by Author & Illustrator. Limited Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Goulandris, Niki A..
