        Naked Lunch

New York: Grove Press, Inc., 1984 25th Anniversary Edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by Burroughs to Steven Lowe on the title page: "For Steve /with friendship / over many years / and places / New York, Sante Fe / Boulder / William S. Burroughs / May 21, 1991". Publisher's black cloth and black boards, lettered in red; in the original yellow dust jacket designed by Peter Morance, lettered in red and black. Fine book; fine, unclipped dust jacket. A beautiful copy, inscribed by Burroughs. Burroughs inscribed this copy of Naked Lunch to his close friend, assistant, and collaborator Steve Lowe. As Mark Van de Walle comments in a 2011 article about Lowe and his Beat Hotel for The Paris Review, "Steve and William were close and more than closeÂ… They were friends, although that word seems pallid to describe their relationship, more intimate than most marriages." Similarly, Lowe and Burroughs' professional relationship extended beyond the usual boundaries. As Van de Walle explains, Lowe was "William Burroughs's amanuensis, a position that combined the duties of researcher, artist's assistant, gallerist, and Official Writer's-Block Breaker." Over the course of their friendship, which spanned well over a quarter century, Lowe amassed a sizeable collection of Burroughs ephemera and signed materials, including this copy of Naked Lunch. Originally published in Paris in 1959, Naked Lunch is a series of vignettes, intended to be read independently of one another. The title, as Burroughs explains in his introduction, "means exactly what the words sayÂ… a frozen moment when everyone sees what is on the end of every fork." The stories follow drug addict William Lee as he travels to a variety of locations; each story is loosely based on Burroughs' own experiences with drugs in these locations. As John Ciardi commented in his June 27, 1959 review for The Saturday Review, "what Burroughs is writing about is not only the destruction of depraved men by their drug lust, but the destruction of all men by their consuming addictions, whether the addiction be drugs or over righteous propriety, lasciviousness or sixteen-year-old girls.". Inscribed by Author. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Tagore / Priyambada Devi's Letters to Okakura / Priyambada Devi's Notebook / Priyambada Devi's Second Notebook / Notes by and concerning Okakura - Housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston / A Record of Okakura's Eyesight Okakura Kakuzo (February 14, 1862 – September 2, 1913) (also known as Okakura Tenshin) was a Japanese scholar who contributed to the development of arts in Japan. Outside Japan, he is chiefly remembered today as the author of The Book of Tea. Born in Yokohama to parents originally from Fukui, Okakura learned English while attending a school operated by Christian missionary, Dr. Curtis Hepburn. At 15, he entered Tokyo Imperial University, where he first met and studied under Harvard-educated professor Ernest Fenollosa. In 1889, Okakura co-founded the periodical Kokka. In 1887 he was one of the principal founders of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko), and a year later became its head, although he was later ousted from the school in an administrative struggle. Later, he also founded the Japan Art Institute with Hashimoto Gaho and Yokoyama Taikan. He was invited by William Sturgis Bigelow to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1904 and became the first head of the Asian art division in 1910. Okakura was a high-profile urbanite who had an international sense of self. In the Meiji period he was the first dean of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (later merged with the Tokyo Music School to form the current Tokyo University of the Arts). He wrote all of his main works in English. Okakura researched Japan's traditional art and traveled to Europe, the United States, China and India. He emphasised the importance to the modern world of Asian culture, attempting to bring its influence to realms of art and literature that, in his day, were largely dominated by Western culture. His 1903 book on Asian artistic and cultural history, The Ideals of the East with Special Reference to the Art of Japan, published on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, is famous for its opening paragraph in which he sees a spiritual unity throughout Asia, which distinguishes it from the West: Asia is one. The Himalayas divide, only to accentuate, two mighty civilisations, the Chinese with its communism of Confucius, and the Indian with its individualism of the Vedas. But not even the snowy barriers can interrupt for one moment that broad expanse of lo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Pair of Hands of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (Ghostbusters)

Los Angeles: Columbia Pictures, 1984 7.5 x 7 x 3 inches. Two soft foam costume hands, painted white. Very good, left hand with a two inch closed tear to palm, light wear to creases; right hand overall lightly charred, with some wear and a few shallow tears to creases. With a copy of Cinefex magazine, Number 17 (June 1984), which features a Ghostbusters making-of-the-movie article, with Mr. Stay Puft on the cover; near fine with mild creasing and a touch of wear. A rare and iconic costume piece, from the suit that sustained burns during filming. At the dramatic climax of Ghostbusters, an epic battle of good and evil takes place between the Ghostbusters of New York City and Gozer the Traveler, an evil Samarian demigod who comes back in time to take over the world. Gozer challenges the Ghostbusters to "choose the form of the destructor"; Ray Stantz thinks of a childhood memory, roasting Stay Puft marshmallows around a campfire. Mr. Stay Puft, the product's brand symbol, manifests into a 112.5-foot monster who then attacks them. The Ghostbusters "roast" Mr. Stay Puft with their proton packs, but they are not able to destroy him or Gozer until they pull a risky move by crossing the streams of their Nutrona wands. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is iconic, and has been featured in comic books, video games, action figures, and the Ghostbusters animated cartoon series. Ghostbusters was filmed by Entertainment Effects Group (EEG) in Marina Del Rey, CA. Sculptor and designer Bill Bryan, who also made suits for Dune, designed and created the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man suit, and he also wore it in the film for the walking scenes. Two "hero" suits were created for these scenes, with another "burn" suit made for the shots where the Ghostbusters roast Mr. Stay Puft. These costume hands are from the "burn" suit, worn by stuntman Brad Alan. To simulate the roasting, flash paper rolled up with fireworks stars were embedded into the foam and then ignited. "The scenes with the Stay-Puft man being blasted by the Nutrona wands were very important in making the audience believe the wands really had some power. Â…In another shot, we loaded up the chest with explosive charges, fired them off, and had the face grimace. It looked like he was really hurt - and, in fact, I felt bad afterwards," said John Bruno, EEG art director who previously worked as animation supervisor on Poltergeist. Ghostbusters received an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects. [Ghostbusters by Adam Eisenberg, Cinefex magazine #17.]. Very Good.

Genesis Publications, 1984. Limited Numbered First Edition. Leather & Cloth Boards. Fine/No Jacket as Issued. A beautiful full leather Limited Numbered First Edition signed by former Beatle George Harrison and author Derek Taylor. Numbered 1026 of only 2,000 Limited Editions, the only edition of this book. All in fine unread condition in a matching brown cloth slipcase that is also in fine condition. This is Derek Taylor's colorful autobiography, packed with glorious pieces of memorabilia from his early days as a journalist, to his term as Beatles publicist and great friend and beyond. Written by Derek Taylor and edited and annotated by George Harrison, it is a lasting testament to the genius, wit and insight of two great men. An early working title had been 'And We All Shine On' but the title was finally taken from a Liverpudlian expression. FIFTY YEARS ADRIFT was the subject of glowing reviews including a fabulous one in The New York Times, while The Beatles Book Monthly described it as, 'Probably the best Beatles-related volume ever'. A beautiful set.

Göttingen, Steidl 1984-92. - Gr.-Folio. Lose. - 2. Doppelt genäht hält besser - Aids ist keine Strafe Gottes. - 3. Porträt Umweltminister Töpfer (CDU). - 4. Wir rufen die Jugend der Welt. - 5. Unfeine Behandlung nach Dr. h.c. Franz Josef Strauss. - 6. Umwelt schützen - den Kohl abwählen. - 7. Mann der Arbeit aufgewacht. - 8. In Niedersachsen läuft alles wie geschmiert - Ihre CDU. - 9. Die Sozis können eben nicht mit Geld umgehen. - 10. Die Robben sind tot. Der Nächste bitte! - 11. Die Bundesrepublik ist für mehr Demonstrationen. - 12. Schöne Aussichten. - 13. Das erste Gift. - 14.
