Collection of I.A.G. and F.E.S. publications. Jeddah, Oxford, New York, 1979-1984.

1984. 1) Evolution and Mineralization of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. (I.A.G. Bulletin No. 3). Jeddah, 1979-1980. 4 vols. 2) Abdulaziz A. M. Radain, Petrogenesis of some Peralkaline and Non-Peralkaline Post-Tectonic Granites in the Arabian Shield, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. F.E.S. Research Series No. 16 (1980). 3) Bulletin of the Faculty of Earth Sciences. No. 5 (1983). 4) Pan-African Crustal Evolution in the Arabian-Nubian Shield. F.E.S. Bulletin No. 6 (1984). Includes maps. Extremely rare collection of bulletins and research publications, all designated as "internal publications of limited distribution" and available only through the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences in Jeddah. The Faculty of Earth Sciences at King Abdulaziz University is considered the first specialized geology college in the Middle East and has remained a force in research since its foundation in 1970. It was founded as the Institute of Applied Geology (associated with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia), but in 1980 became one of the King Abdulaziz University schools. The college published a journal, the first three issues of which were entitled "I.A.G. Bulletins" (of which the first two saw virtually no distribution beyond the immediate Faculty); the series was then continued in Nos. 4-6 as "F.E.S Bulletins" before ceasing publication in 1984. Of this rare periodical, the present collection includes Nos. 3 and 5-6. Also included is No. 16 of the F.E.S. Research Series, a revised version of the author's Ph.D. thesis in Geology submitted to the University of Western Ontario, Canada, in 1978. - Well preserved; most volumes with contemporary ms. ownership of the geologist John Randolph Vail (a contributor), another with stamps of the Geology Library, Imperial College, London / Watts Library.

LES TRÈS RICHES HEURES DU DUC DE BERRY

Faksimile Verlag Luzern, Lucerne 1984 - 302 x 216 mm. (11 7/8 x 8 1/2"). [206] leaves (in the facsimile). Two volumes (the facsimile plus a commentary volume in German). Commentary by Raymond Cazelles and Johannes Rathofer. No. 755 OF 980 COPIES. Publisher's replica red morocco binding, covers with gilt-ruled border and cresting floral frame, coat of arms with coronet at center, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral spray centerpiece and leafy frond cornerpieces, green silk pastedowns, all edges gilt. Commentary volume in red morocco-backed green silk. Both housed in an acrylic case with slide-out panel. With numerous illuminated initials, many WITH marginal extensions, 65 SMALL MINIATURES (measuring approximately 80 x 50 mm.) AND 66 FULL-PAGE MINIATURES. In nearly mint condition. This is an excellent facsimile of one of the greatest--and certainly the most famous--Medieval Book of Hours. It was commissioned by Jean, Duke of Berry (1340-1416), from the great illuminators Paul, Herman, and Jean Limbourg, who had previously created the "Belles Heures" for the duke. They began work on this masterpiece around 1412, but all three brothers died in 1416, probably from plague, leaving the manuscript incomplete. The duke also died in that year, broken by the defeat of the French monarchy at Agincourt, and the manuscript passed into the hands of his great-nephew, King Charles VII of France. An artist known only as the "Intermediate Painter"worked on some of the illustrations: costume details in some of the miniatures indicate they were executed in the mid-15th century. In 1485, Charles, Duke of Savoy, commissioned painter Jean Colombe to complete the book of hours. The large miniature of the Man of Sorrows on folio 75 depicts the duke and his duchess kneeling on either side of the wounded Christ. Cazelles and Rathofer identify the calendar miniature of November as Colombe's sole work. Other indications that a painting was done or finished by Colombe is the presence of an architectural frame or the use of an intense blue in the landscape. In addition to being far more lavishly illustrated than the usual book of hours, the "Tres Riches Heures" is distinguished by its quarto size. It is an impressive tome, not a small book for personal devotion. This is an excellent facsimile of one of the greatest--and certainly the most famous--Medieval Book of Hours.       Persea Books; Gisele Freund 1984 and 1985, New York - A copy of the first edition, first printing (small bit of excess binder's glue to the spine tail), in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY GISELE FREUND on the title page and there inscribed by her as follows: "To Michael Hargraves / those [followed by a curving line leading to the book's printed title 'Three Days with Joyce' and thus incorporating the book's title into her inscription] / with my warm thoughts // Gisele Freund, // Santa Monica, dec. 1987"; TOGETHER WITH THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT FOR PUBLICATION OF THE BOOK by and between Persea Books and Gisele Freund dated August 1, 1984, SIGNED BY GISELE FREUND on the signature page AND INITIALED BY GISELE FREUND FIVE TIMES -- thus showing her initials on each of the Contract's main pages, with four of such pages and a Rider being initialed by Karen Braziller, the Executive Director of Persea Books. [Neither the Contract nor the Rider is signed by Braziller, and the Rider is neither signed nor initialed by Freund, the parties presumably intending this to be Freund's original for her files.] TOGETHER WITH FREUND'S LITERARY AGENT'S FILE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL LETTER FROM KAREN BRAZILLER TO GISELE FREUND -- showing a cc to Freund's Literary Agent Joan Daves -- such copy bearing Karen Braziller's original signature; TOGETHER WITH THE ORIGINAL ADVANCE AGAINST ROYALTIES CHECK in the amount of $900 SIGNED BY JOAN DAVES and made payable to David J. Silverman as Agent for Gisele Freund. The book features photographs that the famed photographer Gisele Freund captured over the course of three days spent with James Joyce in Paris between 1938-1939, capturing the great writer Joyce on the eve of the publication of Finnegan's Wake; one sees Joyce at work, meeting with his publisher, as well as with his editor (Eugene Jolas), and relaxing with his family. Freund also provides a short text in caption form to her photographs. The renowned French photographer Gisele Freund photographed an extensive number of famous people, particularly writers and artists of the twentieth century, and took the only known color photograph of James Joyce. Born in Germany, Freund was a Socialist and a vocal opponent of the Nazis. She fled from Germany to Paris, where she spent the majority of the rest of her life, and became a French Citizen. Recognized as one of the great portraitists of the 20th century, Freund photographed Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf, James Joyce, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, George Bernard Shaw, T.S. Eliot, Eva Peron, Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, and many others. Signed copies of Freund's books are not common and original contracts for her works available for purchase are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Fine copy of the book INSCRIBED, SIGNED, DATED, AND PLACED BY GISELE FREUND, TOGETHER WITH A COUNTERPART OF THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT FOR THE BOOKS' PUBLICATION (in Very Good condition) SIGNED ONCE AND INITIALED FIVE TIMES BY GISELE FREUND, TOGETHER WITH THE ORIGINAL CHECK FOR THE ADVANCE AGAINST ROYALTIES FOR THE BOOK PAID TO FREUND (in Very Good condition as well). A Country Alphabet

Old Stile Press 1984 - A Country Alphabet 1984. One of only 26 lettered issues which contained copies of pulls of all the blocks as well as an extra two page spread contained in an accompanying portfolio slipcased along with the main book which is bound in vellum. This is letter 'N'. Slipcase very slightly scuffed to corners. Book: vellum binding slightly lighter to spine. Small pencil note to final endpaper; otherwise without fault. Signed to title page by Heather and Robin Tanner. Portfolio: brown cloth very very slightly rubbed to corners. The two page spread is about the Ampersand (deliberate misspelling of ampersand printed as ampersamd?). The pulls are as new. Overall a fine copy. More details available on request.       New York: Persea Books; Gisele Freund, 1984 and 1985. Hardcover Book, Stapled Contract, Loose Check. Fine/fine. A copy of the first edition, first printing (small bit of excess binder's glue to the spine tail), in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY GISELE FREUND on the title page and there inscribed by her as follows: "To Michael Hargraves / those [followed by a curving line leading to the book's printed title 'Three Days with Joyce' and thus incorporating the book's title into her inscription] / with my warm thoughts // Gisele Freund, // Santa Monica, dec. The Films of Gregory Peck (First Edition, inscribed to Judith Crist)

The Citadel Press, Secaucus, NJ 1984 - First Edition. INSCRIBED by Gregory Peck to film critic and academic Judith Crist, who provides the introduction: "For Judith / With great appreciation and warm regards / Gregory Peck." Laid in are two very interesting pieces of ephemera: a photocopy of a rave review from The Columbus Dispatch, with a holograph ink notation from John Griggs to Crist: "Dear J.C. / Received this from Peck the other day and thought you'd enjoy seeing it as much as I did / LXXX / JG" and a copy of "Judith Crist's Oscar Pool 1992," something of an internal document, that includes two mentions of Peck's final acting role, the 1991 remake of "Cape Fear" by Martin Scorsese.Judith Crist was the first full-time female film critic for an American newspaper, the New York Herald Tribune, the founding film critic at New York magazine, and in her later years, well known as the film critic for TV Guide. She appeared in Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories" (1980), and authored several collections of essays on film and interviews with filmmakers. Though more a populist, she very much paved the way for Pauline Kael, as she refused to be influenced by any opinion but her own, and could be quite blunt in her assessments of films. Billy Wilder once said that asking her to review a film was like "asking the Boston Strangler for a neck massage," and Otto Preminger simply referred to her as "Judas Crist."In her foreword here, Crist makes clear her absolute fondness for the archetypal style that Peck created, moving through a huge variety of groundbreaking characters while maintaining a staunch core integrity, best exemplified by his role as one of the first Western anti-heroes in "The Gunfighter" (1950), the anti-Cary Grant in "Roman Holiday" (1953), and the anti-father in "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1963).Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Jacket has a lightly faded spine and a few tiny nicks at the extremities, else quite bright. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
