Hulme, Keri
Wellington: Spiral, 1983. First New Zealand edition (and true first) of the author's Booker Prize-winning novel. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. In very good condition. In a tower on the New Zealand sea lives Kerewin Holmes: part Maori, part European, asexual and aromantic, an artist estranged from her art, a woman in exile from her family. One night her solitude is disrupted by a visitor--a speechless, mercurial boy named Simon, who tries to steal from her and then repays her with his most precious possession. As Kerewin succumbs to Simon's feral charm, she also falls under the spell of his Maori foster father Joe, who rescued the boy from a shipwreck and now treats him with an unsettling mixture of tenderness and brutality. Out of this unorthodox trinity Keri Hulme has created what is at once a mystery, a love story, and an ambitious exploration of the zone where indigenous and European New Zealand meet, clash, and sometimes merge. "This book is just amazingly, wondrously great" (Alice Walker). [Attributes: First Edition]

POTE, Winston H. (1899-1989)
1983. No binding. The collection is comprised of 24 items dating from 1929 to 1983, specifically, 11 photos, 7 letters, and 5 postcards. Winston H. Pote was one of America's earliest ski photographers. His career in the 1920s paralleled the rise of alpine skiing in America. For example, he took photos of Charley Proctor, the only native-born American, on the 1928 US Olympic team. He began working as a druggist in Swampscott, Mass., was as an amateur guide and photographer, and then became a winter mountaineer and lecturer specializing in aerial photography of the New Hampshire mountains during winter. After his first expedition to the White Mountains in the winter of 1923, Pote returned often to Mt. Washington in all seasons. He took the earliest movies and aerial photographs of the mountain. During World War II, he volunteered for the "ski troops" and was the official still photographer of the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division in the Colorado Rockies. After the war he returned to civilian life and moved with his wife, Marion, to a farm in Lancaster, Coos County, New Hampshire. He became one of America's most celebrated photographers of scenic views (mountains and high valleys) for Christmas cards and calendars. He was the author of Mountain Troops, 10th Mountain Division, Camp Hale, Colorado (1982) and Mount Washington in Winter: Photographs and Recollections, 1923-1940 (1985). 11 photographs with Winston Pote's stamp on the back (5 × 4 to 10 × 7-3/4 inches). AREA
New York: n.p, 1983. Collection of 125 flyers and posters from New York's hottest and most inventive nightclub, Area, during the mid-1980s. Although it was a disco, Area was a purely visual, happenings-based venue, where New York's art, music, design, fashion, and literary worlds collided; Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, or Jean-Michel Basquiat might be brushing up against Michael Forbes, David Byrne, or Georgio Armani, and Stephen Saban would be there to remind them what happened afterwards in his Details magazine column. Unlike other downtown clubs that focused on music or dancing, Area was driven by art and the scene that it engendered, through its theme nights, elaborate installations, and inventive flyers that seemed to embody Warhol's concept of business art. This archive includes Area's famously unconventional invitations, posters, articles, booklets, and other ephemera from the nightclub's short-lived, yet significant, four-year history. Features two cards enclosed in envelopes addressed to Richard Serra. A defining celebration of the creative hedonism of 1980s New York and a remarkable documentation of the "Bright Lights, Big City" years. Contents uniformly in near fine to fine condition.

GRAHAM, Paul
Bristol: Grey Editions, 1983. First Edition. Oblong quarto. SIGNED by the photographer. One of about 75 copies issued in hard cover, but distributed only in the paperback edition. The colophon states the hardcover edition was issued in a slipcase with a print, but we believe the slipcase and print were not executed at the time of publication. A few copies with prints have sold at auctions over the last several years, but these prints were added after the fact. Paul Graham's first book: one of the seminal British titles of last 25 years. A comprehensive documentary survey of the A1 highway in England: the only road to run the length of the country, from London to Edinburgh. With an introduction by Rupert Martin and an afterword by the photographer. Can be looked at as the modern British equivalent of Robert Frank's, "The Americans". Fine in a fine jacket.
