Ellroy, James
N.p, 1983. Original handwritten manuscript draft for the 1984 novel. With Ellroy's profuse and expectedly surgical corrections to his own text throughout, and with substantial content that did not make the published edition. With a letter of provenance from Ellroy's then-editor and publisher Otto Penzler, tying the manuscript directly to its source. According to Penzler, Ellroy's manuscripts would always begin as completely handwritten documents, before being typed, edited by both Penzler and Ellroy, and then generally retyped and re-edited once more. In addition to early unpublished content, the manuscript reveals the extremely fastidious nature of Ellroy's process, as well as his preference for writing out and editing his research, outlines, and finished novels by hand. As an object, the manuscript is an almost overwhelming testament to the process that results in what has been accurately described as the author's "dense, baroque style," or what Scott Timberg of the Los Angeles Times in 2006 famously called "a heightened pastische of jazz slang, cop patois, creative profanity, and drug vernacular." Ellroy's fifth novel, and the second in his L.A.Noir trilogy that featured LAPD robbery-homicide detective Lloyd Hopkins. Because the Night centers on the investigation of a triple murder at a liquor store that strangely involves no theft, leading Hopkins to believe that the crime was a "thrill kill." Black, blue, and red ink manuscript. 461 leaves, each numbered at the top left, standard notebook paper stock, rectos only. Housed in a large black post-style clasp binder. Liverpool, n.d. [c1983]. Manuscript. Unbound. Campbell deposited his manuscripts, typescripts and correspondence with the Science Fiction Foundation Collection at the University of Liverpool. The present manuscript, along with the other that we are offering (stock code 7160) are the only copies we know of currently in private hands. No copies recorded at auction. Liverpool hold typescripts and galleys of the present title. An important piece and a rare opportunity to own a manuscript by the author referred to in the Oxford Companion to English Literature as ?Britain?s most respected living horror writer?. University of British Columbia Press, in co-operation with the Provincial Archives of British Columbia Vancouver 1983 First Edition Folio - over 12" - 15" tall Hardcover 218 pages. From limited edition of 1600 copies. "Concerned entirely with the Haidas of the Queen Charlotte Islands of the last century, the intricacies of the kinship patterns of the great families, and how they saw themselves as part of a fantastic, but in its own terms, logical, cosmos, and most of all how this was all expressed in their remarkable architecture with its perfectly integrated massive carved and painted embellishments, the great totem poles of the Haidas." - from Foreward. "The documentary photographs that survive are among the few remaining records which illustrate the richness and variety of Haida monumental art. Of the more than five hundred carved poles which appear in the plates, only about fifty were removed to museums for safekeeping. The remainder have perished entirely or survive at the village sites as decayed fragments overgrown with the lush vegetation of the islands." - from Preface. Light external wear and soiling to cream-coloured cloth-covered boards. No external markings. Discreet bookplate and bit of writing inside front board. Blindstamp to lower corner of title page. Bit of writing in upper left corner of title page. Remnant of card pocket inside back board. Binding tight. A quality copy of this magnificent work. Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1983. First paperback edition, issued simultaneously with the hardcover edition of the poet's Pulitzer Prize-winning collection. Octavo, original green cloth. Signed by Mary Oliver on the title page. In fine condition. Jacket photograph by Lisa Paquette. Author photograph by Molly Malone Cook. Mary Oliver was described by The New York Times as "far and away, [America's] best-selling poet." She has won both the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and the National Book Award in 1992. Oliver's poetry has been called an "indefatigable guide to the natural world, particularly to its lesser-known aspects" (Kumin, 1993). "Visionary as Emerson [ she is] among the few American poets who can describe and transmit ecstasy, while retaining a practical awareness of the world as one of predators and prey," reviewed The Nation. Holly Prado of Los Angeles Times Book Review noted that Oliver's work "touches a vitality in the familiar that invests it with a fresh intensity." Mary Shelley
Dodd, Mead & Co, 1983. Up for sale is a signed / dated / inscribed copy of the Signed Limited edition of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Limited to 500 copies, this is #4. Inscribed by Stephen King to Burt Hatlen. This book is signed by Stephen King twice! Burt Hatlen was King's friend, mentor, and teacher. Note that King warmly signed as "Steve" instead of the usual "Stephen" he does most of the time. WHO it is inscribed to, HOW it was signed make this an amazing piece that any King fan would love to add to their collection. I would rate the book as FINE, and the slipcase as NEAR FINE....but look at the pictures and judge for yourself. The glassine wrapper has a couple of tears, but this is easily replaced. Check out my feedback......99% of what I buy and sell is Stephen King related. As you can see, I have excellent feedback, and have been buying and selling on eBay for twenty years! Buy with confidence! By the way, I am a collector as well. Your book will be packed in a way I would want to receive it if I was the buyer. No padded envelopes or flimsy packing jobs here. Your book will be shipped in a sturdy, well-packed cardboard box, it will be insured, and you will get a tracking number so you can keep tabs on it. Payment must be received within 3 days of close of auction. Thanks for looking! Check out my other items! I have other Stephen King items up for sale now!

Moulton, Gary E. (Editor)
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London, 1983. Inscribed by Moulton on the title page. "When the Corps of Discovery left the vicinity of St. Louis in 1804 to explore the American West, they had only sketchy knowledge of the terrain that they were to cross - existing maps often contained large blank spaces and wild inaccuracies. William Clark painstakingly mapped every mile of the journey, drawing from both direct observation and from the reports of Indians and a few fur traders. On their return Lewis and Clark directed the execution of new maps detailing with remarkable accuracy the features of the country that they had traversed." Contains 126 facsimile reproductions of maps from the expedition. The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Volume 1. Folio. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt and blue stamping. Some fading along the extremities; otherwise very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Charles Bukowski
San Pedro, CA: 1983. In 25 years I've only seen three or four Charles Bukowski poem manuscripts for sale that were not carbon copies. The rest of them are in museums. This is one of them - an original typescript with white-out correction and signature. This manuscript is not the usual carbon copy he sent to magazines and his publisher. On an original, you can see the lines or dots from the typewriter ribbon in the open spaces of the round letters. On a carbon, those lines or dots become indistinct gray spots (compare the provided close-up images to see the difference). In 1968 Bukowski started making carbon copies when he typed poems, and he kept the original top sheet (like this one) for his files. This is an extremely rare opportunity to own one of the very, very few original typescripts that have ever made it to market, which is why the price is higher than what you might find for a typical 1983 poem manuscript (but still low for an original typescript). Make Bukowski's mistake the crown jewel of your collection.

Additionally notated on verso by Ginsberg in pencil: "Creeley 1983 Summer / Aug Maine / [numbered notation] / Giveaway for Robert." "AG-069" in unknown hand at lower right corner. Trace wear at edges. Else fine. Photo portrait of Ginsberg's friend and fellow-poet Robert Creeley, showing him seated in the living room of his home and gazing at the camera. Notation of back of photo suggests this copy intended for Creeley himself. Their lifelong friendship dates to the earliest days of both of their careers: Creeley typed the ditto masters for the true first edition of Ginsberg's HOWL, and published Ginsberg in the BLACK MOUNTAIN REVIEW. A warm photo by Ginsberg of a fellow Beat.
