Aaron J Elkins
New York: Aaron J Elkins - The Dark Place - Walker, 1983 - 1st Edition / 1st Printing / 1st Issue - Complete number line, starting with "1", present on copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. Correct first issue with no "1985" date on title copyright page and the correct "$12.95" price on the front jacket flap. This example is easily near fine with a touch of shelf wear but no real visible blemishes. The dust jacket has shelf has shelf wear, a pair of closed tears and some minor creases to the bottom edge. A much nicer than typical example of the author's scarce 2nd novel and 2nd Professor Gideon Oliver mystery. This is the true first edition printed in 1983 which has NO mention of the 1985 reissue and retains the correct dust jacket price. This copy has been signed and inscribed by the author on the front fly page: "August 30, 1985 / To Bob & Vera / - To whom I owe the / roof over my head. / Aaron j Elkins". A most pleasing and scarce title to find with such a warm and seemingly important inscription. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

ORWELL, George.
8 Nov 1934-22 July 1983. Housed in a green morocco album with centre tool to spine separated by raised bands by the Chelsea Bindery. Some light creasing and nicking; overall in very good condition. Victor Gollancz's archived correspondence regarding the publication of George Orwell's first novel, A Clergyman's Daughter, including the original contract for the novel. Present are two typed letters, two autograph letters, and two autograph postcards, all signed by Orwell; all such material is uncommon in the market. Orwell began to write the novel in January 1934. It was not a book that gave him satisfaction, and his letters over the next few months show his disillusionment with his own writing. He later told Henry Miller "that book is bollox, but I made some experiments in it that were useful to me" (cited in Fenwick, Orwell Bibliography, p. 31), and asked for it to not be reprinted after his death, apart from cheap editions to make a few pounds for his heirs. Though today the novel is probably the least-read of Orwell's major books, it is also his most experimental novel, influenced by modernist trends (Orwell read James Joyce's Ulysses while writing the novel, which he said gave him an inferiority complex), and a notable stage in his literary development. Orwell finished the novel in October 1934, and sent it to Gollancz via his literary agent Leonard Moore. The archive opens with a reader's report for Gollancz by Gerald Gould (fiction editor of the Observer, appointed by Gollancz as manuscript reader), dated 8 November 1934. Gould states that the book is of great merit and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roald Dahl
Cape. Roald Dahl - The Witches - First Edition 1983 SIGNED & INSCRIBED A first edition, first reprint, published by Cape in 1983. A near fine copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Douglas/Love/Roald'. In a near fine unclipped wrapper. A lovely copy with a strong association to Dahl himself. Douglas Highton attended St Peter's Prep School in Weston-super-Mare with Roald Dahl. As a friend, Douglas supported Roald during an incident at school, which Roald would never forget and later recounted in his autobiographical book 'Boy'. Douglas also appears anecdotally in the short story 'Lucky Break', and as a character in the short story 'The Swan'. The two stayed in touch over the years and Douglas would visit Roald at home in Great Missenden where Roald kindly signed many books for Douglas' grandchildren, Andrew and Rebecca. ___________________________________________ JOHN ATKINSON BOOKS is a full-time professional bookseller in Ripon, North Yorkshire.
Lillian Gish! Date : [octobre 1983]. Format : In-4. Etat : marque de trombone. Nombre de documents : 1. Type de document : manuscrit autographe (brouillon). Nombre de pages : 3

Emily Dickinson
1983. Update: One lock of poet Emily Dickinson's hair. (The blonde lock may have belonged to her nephew, Gib.) These were purchased at auction from the estate of poet and critic J.D. McClatchy, who received them from his friend, Pulitzer-prize-winning poet James Merrill. The only other lock of Dickinson's hair is in the archives of the Frost Library at Amherst College. One lock of Emily Dickinson's hair (auburn), framed with another lock (blonde) perhaps belonging to her nephew, Gib Dickinson. From the appraiser: "It appears that the only known locks of hair belonging to Emily Dickinson are those that were gifted to Amherst College in 1983 by descendants of Dickinson's friend Emily Fowler (later Emily Ford). Those locks were sent in a letter to Fowler that read, "I said when the Barber came, I would save you a little ringlet, and fulfilling my promise, I send you one today. I shall never give you anything again that will be half so full of sunshine as this wee lock of hair, but I wish no hue more sombre might ever fall to you." (The Letters of Emily Dickinson. Thomas Johnson, ed. Letter #99). The auburn lock in the present lot appears to be consistent in color with those at Amherst, though we have been unable to track the provenance any further than the American poet James Merrill, who owned them before gifting them to his friend J.D. McClatchy." Framed (5" x. 3-3/4") Please note that the auburn lock is darker than appears in the first photograph, and more reddish than it appears in the second. Additional photographs available upon request. Note also that the lock of hair at … [Click Below for Full Description]
