The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Inferno, A Verse Translation by Tom Phillips With Images and Commentary [Dante's Inferno]; (Accompanied by the Thames and Hudson trade edition as a reading copy)

London: Talfourd Press, 1983. Limited Edition. No binding. Fine. No. 90 of 100 copies (total edition approximately 185), Elephant Folio - over 15" to 23" tall, 432 pp., Signed by Artist. Tom Phillips (b. 1937), an Oxford graduate, is one of the most prominent artists working today and his work is represented in most major collections of modern art around the world. He was inspired to create his visually stunning verison of Dante when he found a "lavish, red, gilded edition of Dante's 'Inferno' illustrated by Gustave Dore". His vision for this version was "to make the book a container for the energy usually expended on large scale paintings. The artist thus tries to reveal the artist in the poet and the poet helps to uncover / release the poet in the artist". As the LA Times wrote when reviewing the trade edition, "there is no doubt that Tom Phillips has captured Dante for our time. His prodigious achievement is not so much illustration as it is visual commentary, a fidelity to Dante's spirit at the occasional expense of the literal action of the poem." Mr. Phillips spent seven years creating this livre d'artiste, published in an edition of "approximately" 185 copies, 100 of which were sold as a boxed set. For his illustration and providing a new translation of the "Inferno" Phillips received the Frances Williams Memorial Prize in 1983; he also made a TV version of the Inferno with Peter Greenaway which won them jointly as directors the Italia prize. (N.B., above info from Mr. Phillips' web site and Wiki.) ***DESCRIPTION: Presented as unbound sheets contained in two hand-made buckram boxes, with 139 hors-texte illustrations done in intaglio, lithograph and silkscreen, with each illustration individually initialled by the artist; made up of thirty-four cantos, the title pages and the colophon; each canto is on three sheets (12 pages), making a total of 108 sheets (432 pages) in the book; page size is 16.5" by 12.5" (approximate); printed on 100% rag, acid-free, mould-made Inveresk (Somerset) paper, made and tinted to the artist's own specification and incorporating his signature as a watermark, by Inverest Mills, near Wells, Somerset. The two boxes are each covered in buckram, Volume I in olive green, Volume II in black, both have a line-drawing of Dante on the front and lettering on the spine, boxes lined with mauve decorated paper; box dimensions are 18" by 14" by 3" (approximate). ***CONDITION: Fine; each page clean, bright, and free of any marks or wear. The boxes have a slight amount of wear to the corners (professionally addressed to prevent further wear) and some light, stray soil marks, also a bit of wear to the inside paper lining. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that this set is extremely large and heavy, therefore additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.       - 745 x 520mm. Giclà e Print using Archival pigment inks on Hahnemüle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper. Limited edition of 10 numbered copies signed by the photographer. Alan Davidson is a press photographer based in London for more than 30 years, Alan has photographed the rich, the famous, the before-they-were-famous to those that have fallen from grace. Going through his vast archive, with new treasures found within the old brown manilla envelopes, reads like a who's who of the great and good (and the very bad) of London society. Cinema stars rub shoulders with pop stars, royalty with politicians. Working from the late 1960s to the present day Alan remembers the days before celebrities became surrounded by 30 young publicists and before there were 50 photographers at every event you went to, allowing him to take intimate and relaxed portraits, unlike the anodyne syndicated press shots of today.         Art/Life : communication for the creative mind ; the original limited edition monthly [Lot of 31 Issues]

Santa Barbara, California: Joe Cardella, 1983. Each volume: Clear, acetate covers with black plastic grip slide at spine. Title information printed on front cover in black. Nearly all contents printed on recto side only. Unpaginated with approximately 35 to 40 pages in each issue. Contents includes various kinds of paper, fabric, stamps, buttons, beads, ribbons, postage stamps, photographs, drinking straw, etc.; heavy at 30 pounds and will require extra postage. ART/LIFE began in 1981 as a "conceptual exchange" between a global community of artists [and poets]. Unique in its approach, ART/LIFE sources each page directly from the artist with little restriction on subject or medium. Submitted content represents a variety of international contributors and ranges from silkscreened, stamped and photocopied prints to original drawings and collages, pressed foliage, photographs, a Sweet-n-Low packet, and things much stranger. Creator and publisher Joe Cardella curated, assembled and distributed limited editions of 100 to 200 copies every month for 25 years. The result is a varied visual transcript of the dialogue between artists in the 1980s and 1990s." - elmo academy Each issue is comprised entirely of original poetry and fine art, hand signed by each contributing artist. Cardella himself contributed several pieces for each issue. Some are numbered, although the numbers do not necessarily correspond to the number of the issue as a whole, written on each title page. Each volume a unique, quirky work of art in its own right. The issues in this lot are as follows: Volume 3: Nos. 4, 5, 7, 8, 9; Volume 5: Nos. 2 through 10; Volume 6: Nos. 5, 7, 10; Volume 7 (Complete): Nos. 1 through 11; Volume 8: Nos. 1 through 3.         Broadway. SIGNED.

New York/Rotterdam, A. Jan Henderikse-Uitgeverij/Uitgeverij Bébert Edition, 1983. Corrugated cardboard with ribbon ties, 11,7 x 36,3 cms., leporello consisting of title-page + accordion-folded sheets containing b/w photographs (cross-sections, 3 pictures per page) showing perspectives of New York's Broadway by walking. Artist's book. Including Manhattan BUS MAP, inserted in rear pocket. Broadway is a book about Broadway, Manhattan, starting downtown in the financial district, then moving uptown to Soho, Times Square, the Upper West Side, Harlem, Sugar Hill and Inwood to Spuyten Duyvil, which separated Manhattan from the Bronx. "En nu dus BROADWAY. Zo'n 250 straten lang. Dat houdt in zo'n 250 foto's. 3 op een pagina. Fijn uitgevoerd in Harmonica stijl (...)." This rather general indication of the number of plates may indicate that the number of plates per copy can vary (according i.a. to the artist). From an edition of 100 signed copies only sold in Europe, this being signed in pencil by Henderikse on front panel. There was another edition of 100 for the U.S.A., unsigned. Henderikse, Jan.
