        Broadsides]: 10 Hip Hop Flyers

New York 1983 - A collection of 10 early and scarce New York hip hop party flyers from 1979-1983 designed by Buddy "The King of Flyers" Esquire. The flyers feature some of the earliest hip hop innovators including Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Four, Grand Wizard Theodore, Treacherous 3 (with Kool Moe D), Cold Crush Bros., and others. Printed on a range of different color sheets, typically measuring 8.5 x 11", with one measuring 6.5" x 8.5", and another measuring 14" x 8" and printed on both sides. Overall about fine with some very light edgewear and one with two light creases from being folded.Hip hop grew out of the party scene in and around the South Bronx and evolved as it spread across New York in the mid- to late-1970s and early 1980s with many of the innovators clustered together and often sharing the same bill. Most of the early performances were held at small, local get-togethers at parks, boys clubs, police athletic organizations, and roller skating rinks. Without means of mainstream advertising these events relied on flyers distributed by hand around the neighborhood, posted on store windows, and given to students in order to tout the next show.Nearly all the hip hop flyers were handmade by performers, promoters, or artists from the local neighborhoods. The premiere maker was Buddy Esquire, a former graffiti writer, who crafted his first flyer in the summer of 1977. Following a stint painting denim jeans and jackets, he began to seriously focus on flyers starting in November 1978, producing more than 300 flyers over his career. Many of his earliest flyers featured various typefaces with increasingly elaborate borders in a style he referred to as "neo deco." Later he began introducing photos and artwork to the flyers, often created by his brother, Eddie Ed.Esquire's very earliest flyers were produced via mimeograph but that gave way to photo offset printing paid for by show promoters who started to organize larger and more elaborate shows. His flyers were usually produced in little over a day for shows that occurred the same week. They were not meant to last past the show they were advertising and most were discarded immediately, making any hip hop flyer from this era quite rare.A wonderful collection of flyers documenting the early development of what is now considered one of the most dominant musical genres.Flyers:1. 1979 Sweethearts Ball. 1979. Pink sheet printed recto only. Measuring 8.5" x 11". Fine. A Jazzy Dee Production's flyer for a Valentine's Day party held on February 16, 1979 featuring The Funky 4 with Rahiem, Breakout, and DJ Baron at the 3rd Avenue Ballroom.2. Disco History Audubon Sparkle 6 D.J.s Convention. [1979]. Green sheet printed recto only. Measuring 8.5" x 11". Fine. A flyer featuring a packed bill of performers held on December 8, 1979 featuring The Funky Four M.C.s, Lovebug Starski, DJ Mean Gene, DJ Theodore, Kool DJ A.J., and others.3. Mandiplite Presents: The Grand Master Flash Show. 1980. A white sheet printed recto only. Measuring 8.5" x 11". About fine with touch of wear. A flyer for the July 12, 1980 show headlined by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who released their single, "Freedom," a month later. They were supported by Grand Wizzard Theodore, who is credited with inventing scratching, and Master Scott, who, later with the Dynamic Three, recorded the hip hop classic, "The Roof is on Fire."4. T-Connection Presents: Grand Wizzard Theodore. 1980. Yellow sheet printed recto only. Measuring 6.5" x 8.5". Fine.

        [Photo Album]: Early 1980s Youth

[Massachusetts?: , 1983]. [Massachusetts?. 1983]. Small album. 16mo. (4.5" x 5.5"). Printed faux marbled paper over boards with "Photo Album" in gilt on top board. 75 gelatin silver images measuring 3.5" x 5.25, all but one in color. Images are removable and housed in plastic sleeves. Uncaptioned and undated but the band t-shirts represented seem to date it in 1983 or very near. Unlocated but provenance suggest a gritty rust belt city, perhaps Springfield, Massachusetts or Albany. The album and images are fine. The album seems to have been entirely devoted to the daily life of a long haired youth and his friends: flying street hockey and football, lounging in basements, attics, and against graffiti covered derelict buildings, with a motorcycle and a muscle car, with boom box, drinking in groups, with girls, and rolling joints with other particularly stoned-looking friends. A very few are of small children, a couple of mixed race,. A wonderfully evocative and focused album .

Madonna 66: The Complete Set of Original Polaroids

New York: Richard Corman, 1983. First edition. Fine. THE ORIGINAL, UNIQUE POLAROIDS OF MADONNA FROM PHOTOGRAPHER RICHARD CORMAN'S 1983 PHOTOSHOOT PRESENTING THE FUTURE CULTURAL ICON ON THE PRECIPICE OF FAME, SIX WEEKS BEFORE THE RELEASE OF HER DEBUT ALBUM. FOR A LIMITED TIME - UNTIL SEPTEMBER 5 - WE ARE OFFERING AS A COLLECTION THE COMPLETE SET OF 66 POLAROIDS, AS FEATURED IN CORMAN'S NEW LIMITED EDITION FINE ART BOOK "MADONNA 66". AFTER SEPTEMBER 5, 2017, THE SET WILL BE DISPERSED AND THE IMAGES OFFERED INDIVIDUALLY. On the history of the photoshoot, as featured in Vogue (November 28, 2016): "Madonna has remade herself so many times in her 30-plus-year career-Hollywood vamp, urban cowboy, new-age hippie-that it's easy to forget that once, at the beginning of things, she wasn't all that different from so many other city kids: a cool New York City girl who had fled her hometown of Detroit for the East Village. Photographer Richard Corman knows this version of Madonna well. In the early 1980s, when the singer was just getting her career in music and film off the ground, Corman spent months taking pictures of Madonna for several sittings in New York. This was at the behest of his mother, a casting director who saw potential. He caught on right away. 'I called from across the street, and when I looked up, she yelled to come upstairs, and I saw these cat eyes looking over the railing of her four-story walk-up. I knew then and there that this was somebody special,' says Corman of their first meeting at her apartment on East Fourth Street. 'She was funny in the most beguiling way. As soon as I walked up, she served me espresso and bubblegum on a silver plate and tray'... "The 66 images-taken at Madonna's brother's house in Manhattan-were taken as test shots for a movie his mother was casting that never got made. Madonna did her own styling. 'She was wearing white lace leggings under torn jeans... a jean jacket with graffiti on the back and the sleeves cut off, with these rubber bangles, more like friendship bracelets, that she would give away to friends. Her makeup was just so brash-these red lips, and she created that mole on the side of her face,' he says. 'You'd say now that it was so chic-you walk into Opening Ceremony, Urban Outfitters, and this is what everyone is wearing-but she was a visionary. It was so bohemian and gritty and down-to-earth. She was going to vintage clothing shops. She had great taste-and you can't teach that. And the dress, I swear she paid $2 for the gown, and it was so exquisite.' "Corman had previously worked for the legendary photographer Richard Avedon, but says that even with all of his experience around the celebrities that would come through Avedon's studio, the Madonna spark was special. 'She had charisma like I have never seen,' he says. 'When you look at somebody through the camera, you either see behind somebody's eyes or you don't. And with her, it was "wow"'. But it's not just Madonna who was different back then: Corman is nostalgic for a time before photoshoots were so meticulously handled. There is a looseness in these photos that, by definition, cannot be orchestrated. 'Now we'd have 20 bodyguards and 30 assistants. They'd have to cordon off the street. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj-people like that, who I'd love to spend time with-it would be a different experience,' he says. 'But Madonna was accessible-and it was raw.'" In November 2016, Corman released a limited edition fine art book, Madonna 66, featuring reproduced images of the Polaroids and the work was widely praised worldwide in such publications as The New York Times, New York Magazine, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Vanity Fair, and numerous others. For the first time now the original Polaroids are being offered for sale. Each Polaroid is signed and number (1-66) by Corman. The limited edition book is also included in the collection. On Richard Corman: Trained under Richard Avedon, Richard Corman has been one of the most celebrated portrait photographers of the last thirty years. Rolling Stone refers to his photographs as "iconic" and documentarian Ken Burns says Corman's versatile body of work is an "artistic vision dedicated to the highest aspirations of human endeavor... the photographs record in big moments and small, among the famous and ordinary, the gifted and challenged, larger truths relevant to all of us." New York: Richard Corman, 1983. Sixty-six original Polaroids with limited edition book. The Polaroids will be housed in a custom case by noted book artist Sjoerd Hofstra. Fine condition. A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A COMPLETE COLLECTION DOCUMENTING AN IMPORTANT MOMENT IN ART AND CULTURAL HISTORY. ONLY AVAILABLE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 5 AS A COLLECTION.

Fine in a fine dust jacket. Uncommon signed. Mel Watkins writing in The New York Times Book Review praised Gardner for adding "a touch of the plot subtlety of less insistently action-oriented thrillers." He also applauded Gardner's updating of Bond. "Although Mr. Gardner's Bond is less raffishly macho and arrogant than previously depicted," observed Watkins, "the spirit of the 007 series remains intact, and few Fleming admirers are likely to object. There is, in fact, something appealing about a James Bond who can react to women with some sympathy and confusion at a crucial moment."
