Hollywood Africans in front of the Chinese Theater with Footprints of Movie Stars

      - 23-Colour Screenprint, 1983/2015, on 4-ply Museum Board, edition of 60, published by Flatiron Editions. The release marks the first edition authorized by the estate since 2005, Edition of 60, The posthumous release is stamped and signed by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, the artist's sisters and administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the full sheet, 38 ½ x 84 inches (97.79 x 213.36 cm). The edition of 60, which is related to the widely known 1983 artwork Hollywood Africans, owned by the Whitney Museum of American Art, depicts Basquiat with friends, the artists Toxic and Rammellzee. The subject of the work memorializes a time when all three artists were in Los Angeles during Basquiat's second exhibition at the Larry Gagosian Gallery. The work, a commentary on the stereotyping and marginalizing of African Americans in the entertainment industry, led them to coin the term and refer to themselves as the "Hollywood Africans." Equal parts poet and painter, Basquiat challenged the art world binary of high and low, merging European and "primitive" through a neo-expressionist, painterly style that is nearly impossible to categorize. The posthumous release is stamped and signed by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, the artist's sisters and administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 22, 1960. He began his career making street art composed of enigmatic writings on buildings and walls in downtown Manhattan in the late 1970s. His work quickly rose to the spotlight, and by the early 1980s he gained the attention and acclaim of galleries and museums internationally. In what is often classified as a neoexpressionist style, Basquiat drew on social and political themes like systematic racism, identity politics and commodity culture. The artist died at the age of 27 on August 12, 1988 in his studio on Great Jones Street in New York City. Major exhibitions include "Jean-Michel Basquiat: Paintings 1981–1984," Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (1984; traveled to Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, through 1985); Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (1987, 1989); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1993; traveled to Menil Collection, Houston; Des Moines Art Center, Iowa; and Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, Alabama, through 1994); "Basquiat," Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York (2005; traveled to Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, through 2006); and Fondation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland (2010; traveled to Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris); and "Now is the Time" at the Art Gallery of Ontario (2015; traveled to the Guggenheim Bilbao in 2015). Orig. published in 1954 by Karl J. Germer, Crowley's successor (he had died in 1947) as Outer Head of the O.T.O. (Society Ordo Templi Orientis International), Germer died mysteriously in 1962, naming Marcelo Motta as his successor, though he did not learn of his status for 11 years, during which time Crowley's works were "shamelessly pirated" by Francis Regardie. The present volume represents the Original uncut version of this book, with 15,000 words that had been excised completely restored.         The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Inferno, A Verse Translation by Tom Phillips With Images and Commentary [Dante's Inferno]; (Accompanied by the Thames and Hudson trade edition as a reading copy)

Talfourd Press, London 1983 - No. 90 of 100 copies (total edition approximately 185), Elephant Folio - over 15" to 23" tall, 432 pp., Signed by Artist. Tom Phillips (b. 1937), an Oxford graduate, is one of the most prominent artists working today and his work is represented in most major collections of modern art around the world. He was inspired to create his visually stunning verison of Dante when he found a "lavish, red, gilded edition of Dante's 'Inferno' illustrated by Gustave Dore". His vision for this version was "to make the book a container for the energy usually expended on large scale paintings. The artist thus tries to reveal the artist in the poet and the poet helps to uncover / release the poet in the artist". As the LA Times wrote when reviewing the trade edition, "there is no doubt that Tom Phillips has captured Dante for our time. His prodigious achievement is not so much illustration as it is visual commentary, a fidelity to Dante's spirit at the occasional expense of the literal action of the poem." Mr. Phillips spent seven years creating this livre d'artiste, published in an edition of "approximately" 185 copies, 100 of which were sold as a boxed set. For his illustration and providing a new translation of the "Inferno" Phillips received the Frances Williams Memorial Prize in 1983; he also made a TV version of the Inferno with Peter Greenaway which won them jointly as directors the Italia prize. (N.B., above info from Mr. Phillips' web site and Wiki.) ***DESCRIPTION: Presented as unbound sheets contained in two hand-made buckram boxes, with 139 hors-texte illustrations done in intaglio, lithograph and silkscreen, with each illustration individually initialled by the artist; made up of thirty-four cantos, the title pages and the colophon; each canto is on three sheets (12 pages), making a total of 108 sheets (432 pages) in the book; page size is 16.5" by 12.5" (approximate); printed on 100% rag, acid-free, mould-made Inveresk (Somerset) paper, made and tinted to the artist's own specification and incorporating his signature as a watermark, by Inverest Mills, near Wells, Somerset. The two boxes are each covered in buckram, Volume I in olive green, Volume II in black, both have a line-drawing of Dante on the front and lettering on the spine, boxes lined with mauve decorated paper; box dimensions are 18" by 14" by 3" (approximate). ***CONDITION: Fine; each page clean, bright, and free of any marks or wear.
