        Ardeur

Paris: Moreau, (1983). Oblong 12mo. (26) pp. Illustrated by Baltazar. From an edition of 220 copies, this is one of forty signed by the author and by the illustrator, and handcolored. Reproduced entirely by serigraphy, the text is from the author's own manuscript. The abstract black and white illustrations have been colored with pencils by Baltazar. In a unique binding by Véronique Halska of full red snakeskin, with a nickel-plated brass tubular spine. Protected by a black morocco chemise, titled in silver, with a slipcase of morocco and gray paper. The original pictorial wrappers have been mounted on black morocco, which is edged with red snake skin, and fit into the opposite end of the slipcase. Véronique Halska, a Belgian binder, has been widely exhibited in Europe, her bindings appearing at the Centre Pompidou and at the exhibition "Petits Formats Relis" at the Wittockiana Museum in Belgium. Her goal is to "integrate in bindings very diversified materials, always trying to insert in the work fineness and equilibrium, all in harmony with the text." This is a very elegant and tasteful example of her work, and a fine copy.

        The Alchemist

San Francisco: Harper Collins, 1983. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author, "Dear _______ Pay the price of your dreams Paulo Coehlo". Fine in a fine dust jacket. The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams. Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paul Zindel said of its protagonist, "A boy named Santiago joins the ranks of Candide and Pinocchio".

        Weasels at Work

North Tawton: The Morrigu Press. VG+. 1983. Limited Edition. Softcover. Sewn in brick red wrappers with paper label bearing titles on upper wrapper, internally clean and bright, illustration of weasels (by Hughes?) to title page, number 69 of an edition of 75 signed by Hughes on the limitation page, printed at The Morrigu Press in 14pt Perpetua on Roma hand-made paper. , The Morrigu Press was founded in 1979, when Ted Hughes' sister, Olwyn, gave his son, Nicholas, her Albion hand press and a large fount of Monotype Centaur. Olwyn, who together with her brother had been publishing limited editions of his work under the Rainbow Press imprint, had bought the press in the early 1970s, planning to experiment with design ideas for books. However printing proved more complicated than expected and so she gave the press to her nephew. Nicholas had learned printing and bookbinding at school, had discovered a talent for it and so set about printing limited editions of his father's work. Ted Hughes was a talented illustrator, but The Morrigu Press publications are almost the only place where his illustrations were published. The exceptions being the Rainbow Press book, 'Earth Moon', and, as a single drawing of a bull, on or in Moortown Elegies and the trade edition of Moortown Diary. , 9.5" by 6.5" .

[Inscribed typescript of:] 'THE PERSONAL BRAIN (OR THE BRAIN WAVE)' A NOVEL [with other items]

[No place, but possibly Laurel Canyon]. [first three items:]26 December 1983 & [the last:] 26 Dec. 1984.. 4,3,4,8 leaves. Quarto. Dot-matrix printed typescript, punched at top margin, stapled at upper left corner. A few spots to second leaf, otherwise very good or better. A series of three typescript project proposals by Leary, including the following a) an outline and "Cast of Characters" for the work above (4 and 3 leaves respectively), the first inscribed on the top sheet in red and blue ink: "For Alan V. [S.] from Timothy This is a brief outline. Plot details & sample chapter coming soon!!" (the 'S' is affected by the punch hole) and on the first sheet of the Cast: "For Alan V."; b) "The Care and Use of the Personal Brain According [to] The Instructions of the Manufacturers," 4pp., inscribed on the top sheet: "For Alan V.S. from Timothy Proposal for [A]gency - video tape - like J. Fonda's - except for the Brain!"; and c) "The Manual," 8pp., continuing: "...on How to Increase Your Intelligence ...." Each piece is captioned with a "Version" number, and it is possible that the date '1984' appearing on the last is in error. A representative sample of Leary's brainstorming from the 1980s, evidencing speculation about the interrelations between cognition and computers, artificial intelligence, man's potential for further evolution and other such concerns that dominated his public life and writings in the 1980s and 1990s. A manuscript list in an unknown hand identifies the recipient of the inscriptions as "his agent."

CURSE OF LONO (THREE BOOKS, THREE DIFFERENT EDITIONS)

Bantam and Taschen, 0000. A little collection, consisting of: 1) The FIRST EDITION by Bantam, 1983, first printing, softcover, 10 by 7 inches, which, other than an almost invisible bit of foxing to edges, is in fine condition. 2) The much larger hardcover (15 by 11), Taschen's FIRST TRADE EDITION, in smooth white boards with Steadman's goofy lettering in black. I can find no indication of date on this. It is also in fine condition, in a fine illustrated dustjacket. 3) The "whopper," published by Taschen and dated on the title page "December 1, 2004." (Later than the smaller first trade edition.) This is their FIRST LIMITED EDITION. 17½ by 13 inches. Bound in white cloth decorated with Steadman's lettering and artwork (the blue and brown, cigarette in mouth portrait of Thompson that also appears on the cover of the softcover edition and on the dustjacket of the other Taschen edition). The page after the title page contains: "LONO/ This book is copy number AP 155/200 of a worldwide edition of one thousand copies" (while there were 1000 copies printed, only 200 were signed) followed by Thompson's signature in ink, followed by (printed) "Hunter S. Thompson - Woody Creek, Colorado" followed by Steadman's signature and a drawing in ink, followed by (printed) "Ralph Steadman - Kent, England" and "December 1, 2004." Both signatures and the drawing are "actual," not facsimiles. A few pages farther on, there are two (facsimile) letters tipped in, one from the editor of Running Magazine asking Thompson to cover the Honolulu Marathon, which led to the expedition that led to this book being written, and one from Thompson to Steadman about this, beginning with, "I think we have a live one this time, old sport." This is one of those "books" that could be more accurately described, perhaps, as an extravaganza ("extravagonzo?"). It is in fine condition, as too are the accessories that go with it - the burnt orange cloth covered slipcase that is printed on the front and one side, and the heavy-duty cardboard box that is printed front and back and two sides, and has a label on one side declaring (once again) that this is copy #155 of 200." . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Ralph Steadman.

Keith Haring [Catalogue from the 1982 Show at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery]

New York: Tony Shafrazi Gallery 1983, 2nd Edition. () 111, [30]. Good. Square octavo. Spiral bound. Bright pink printed wrappers. Wrappers with shelfwear; corners bumped and lightly rubbed. Previous owner has written something in pen and included a small drawing on the top margin of the front wrapper. Word written in gold marker on verso of front wrapper. The first portion of the catalogue of essays and reproductions of Haring's works are clean and unmarked; however, several (19 of 30) of the pages from the "coloring book" have been neatly (only one not so neatly) coloured or partially coloured. Even with the "additions," this remains a scarce copy of an important art exhibition catalogue. The limited (5000 copies) exhibition catalogue of one of Haring's early shows at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. Includes essays on Haring and his work by Jeffrey Deitch, Robert Pincus-Witten, and David Shapiro. While many of the works in the "coloring book" section have been partially colored, most have been done artfully in a many clearly attempting to emulate Haring. . Haring moved to New York in 1978 and soon gained fame for his colourful and dramatic graffiti art. Haring's exhibitions at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery helped to further raise the profile of his work and launch him as a Pop Art icon. While the aforementioned coloring is unfortunately, I suspect Haring would have approved..

[New York, c. 1983]. Photographs in near fine condition.. Collection of 76 color 3 1/2 X 5 1/4 inch photographs by Martha Cooper, documenting the diverse hip hop and graffiti subcultures of early 1980s New York. Photographs depict varied facets of the movement, with images of breakdancers, turntable disc jockeys, b-boys, and graffiti artists at work, including Keith Haring and Dondi White, among others. The style and clothing of the era is also abundantly documented. An American photojournalist, Cooper is best-known for her early and candid documentation of the New York graffiti scene during the 1970s and 1980s, which has since been amassed in several publications, including the 1984 book Subway Art.

        Weapons Systems and Political Stability

Univ Pr of Amer, USA 1983 - 081912947X 1043 pages. Bibliography. List of books and articles by the author. "Carroll Quigley, historian and teacher at Georgetown University, died January 5, 1977, leaving unfinished this manuscript upon which he had been working for the preceding twelve years. His colleagues and friends, upon reviewing the manuscript, decided to press forward with its publication. Although the manuscript is frustratingly incomplete in time sequence - it ends its narrative in the fifteenth century - it carries further toward completion the uniquely anthropological holistic analysis of history which is the theme of his earlier works. Quigley is incredibly successful in abstracting essence from reality - in analyzing mankind's experience in socializing. He describes weaponry as not an end in itself. It is part of a whole in which by far the greater part of persuasion and cooperation is accomplished by institutionalization of ideologies. This book is one of those human efforts which shapes the mind." - from Foreword by Harry J. Hogan. Moderate external wear. Some rubbing to large silver lettering upon front board. Light pencil underlining and marginal lines. Binding tight. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Snaffles had a distinctive drawing style, often showing just one person in detail. In addition his pictures are often recognisable from the use of (1) the incorporation of one or a number of sketches (often uncoloured) around the principal image (what is sometimes referred to as a remarque), and (2) some additional caption, often amusing, to supplement the picture's title and further explain the scene. ... Snaffles is considered by many to have been 'one of the greatest sporting and military artist of his time' (Horse and Hound Art)."
