[Inscribed typescript of:] 'THE PERSONAL BRAIN (OR THE BRAIN WAVE)' A NOVEL [with other items]

[No place, but possibly Laurel Canyon]. [first three items:]26 December 1983 & [the last:] 26 Dec. 1984.. 4,3,4,8 leaves. Quarto. Dot-matrix printed typescript, punched at top margin, stapled at upper left corner. A few spots to second leaf, otherwise very good or better. A series of three typescript project proposals by Leary, including the following a) an outline and "Cast of Characters" for the work above (4 and 3 leaves respectively), the first inscribed on the top sheet in red and blue ink: "For Alan V. [S.] from Timothy This is a brief outline. Plot details & sample chapter coming soon!!" (the 'S' is affected by the punch hole) and on the first sheet of the Cast: "For Alan V."; b) "The Care and Use of the Personal Brain According [to] The Instructions of the Manufacturers," 4pp., inscribed on the top sheet: "For Alan V.S. from Timothy Proposal for [A]gency - video tape - like J. Fonda's - except for the Brain!"; and c) "The Manual," 8pp., continuing: "...on How to Increase Your Intelligence ...." Each piece is captioned with a "Version" number, and it is possible that the date '1984' appearing on the last is in error. A representative sample of Leary's brainstorming from the 1980s, evidencing speculation about the interrelations between cognition and computers, artificial intelligence, man's potential for further evolution and other such concerns that dominated his public life and writings in the 1980s and 1990s. A manuscript list in an unknown hand identifies the recipient of the inscriptions as "his agent."

Bantam and Taschen, 0000. A little collection, consisting of: 1) The FIRST EDITION by Bantam, 1983, first printing, softcover, 10 by 7 inches, which, other than an almost invisible bit of foxing to edges, is in fine condition. 2) The much larger hardcover (15 by 11), Taschen's FIRST TRADE EDITION, in smooth white boards with Steadman's goofy lettering in black. I can find no indication of date on this. It is also in fine condition, in a fine illustrated dustjacket. 3) The "whopper," published by Taschen and dated on the title page "December 1, 2004." (Later than the smaller first trade edition.) This is their FIRST LIMITED EDITION. 17½ by 13 inches. Bound in white cloth decorated with Steadman's lettering and artwork (the blue and brown, cigarette in mouth portrait of Thompson that also appears on the cover of the softcover edition and on the dustjacket of the other Taschen edition). The page after the title page contains: "LONO/ This book is copy number AP 155/200 of a worldwide edition of one thousand copies" (while there were 1000 copies printed, only 200 were signed) followed by Thompson's signature in ink, followed by (printed) "Hunter S. Thompson - Woody Creek, Colorado" followed by Steadman's signature and a drawing in ink, followed by (printed) "Ralph Steadman - Kent, England" and "December 1, 2004." Both signatures and the drawing are "actual," not facsimiles. A few pages farther on, there are two (facsimile) letters tipped in, one from the editor of Running Magazine asking Thompson to cover the Honolulu Marathon, which led to the expedition that led to this book being written, and one from Thompson to Steadman about this, beginning with, "I think we have a live one this time, old sport." This is one of those "books" that could be more accurately described, perhaps, as an extravaganza ("extravagonzo?"). It is in fine condition, as too are the accessories that go with it - the burnt orange cloth covered slipcase that is printed on the front and one side, and the heavy-duty cardboard box that is printed front and back and two sides, and has a label on one side declaring (once again) that this is copy #155 of 200." . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Ralph Steadman.

Keith Haring [Catalogue from the 1982 Show at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery]

New York: Tony Shafrazi Gallery 1983, 2nd Edition. () 111, [30]. Good. Square octavo. Spiral bound. Bright pink printed wrappers. Wrappers with shelfwear; corners bumped and lightly rubbed. Previous owner has written something in pen and included a small drawing on the top margin of the front wrapper. Word written in gold marker on verso of front wrapper. The first portion of the catalogue of essays and reproductions of Haring's works are clean and unmarked; however, several (19 of 30) of the pages from the "coloring book" have been neatly (only one not so neatly) coloured or partially coloured. Even with the "additions," this remains a scarce copy of an important art exhibition catalogue. The limited (5000 copies) exhibition catalogue of one of Haring's early shows at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. Includes essays on Haring and his work by Jeffrey Deitch, Robert Pincus-Witten, and David Shapiro. While many of the works in the "coloring book" section have been partially colored, most have been done artfully in a many clearly attempting to emulate Haring. . Haring moved to New York in 1978 and soon gained fame for his colourful and dramatic graffiti art. Haring's exhibitions at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery helped to further raise the profile of his work and launch him as a Pop Art icon. While the aforementioned coloring is unfortunately, I suspect Haring would have approved..

Wild Style Archive with 76 Original Photographs

[New York, c. 1983]. Photographs in near fine condition.. Collection of 76 color 3 1/2 X 5 1/4 inch photographs by Martha Cooper, documenting the diverse hip hop and graffiti subcultures of early 1980s New York. These images were originally used in the preparation of an unpublished book, designed by Joseph Vasta, who also produced the poster and promotional material for the 1983 graffiti film Wild Style, a cult classic. Photographs depict varied facets of the movement, with images of breakdancers, turntable disc jockeys, b-boys, and graffiti artists at work, including Keith Haring and Dondi White, among others. The style and clothing of the era is also abundantly documented. An American photojournalist, Cooper is best-known for her early and candid documentation of the New York graffiti scene during the 1970s and 1980s, which has since been amassed in several publications, including the 1984 book Subway Art.

In addition his pictures are often recognisable from the use of (1) the incorporation of one or a number of sketches (often uncoloured) around the principal image (what is sometimes referred to as a remarque), and (2) some additional caption, often amusing, to supplement the picture's title and further explain the scene. ... Best known for his seventies album covers for Miles Davis, Santana, the Beatles, and more, Tadanori Yokoo is arguably the most influential Japanese graphic designer of the Twentieth Century. Published in 1983, this massive (20 x 14 1/2"), sumptuously produced tome focuses on Tadanori Yokoo's paintings and drawings as well as his better-known posters. It was limited to one thousand, two hundred copies - each containing one of four different color lithographs in an edition of three hundred.
