Wave Function of the Universe" in Physical Review D 28 No. 12, 15 December 1983, pp. 2960-2975

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the paper in which James Hartle and Stephen Hawking propose a theory for the creation of the universe. Hartle and Hawking's theory was in response to a perceived problem of the "inflationary theory, namely that it does not explain what may have occurred before the inflation of the universe. Their theory was based in the idea that the universe did not have a boundary, just as the earth does not have a boundary. For example, one may travel around the earth and not come to a boundary or fall off. In addition, the theory was based on quantum theory, a superset theory encompassing general relativity and quantum mechanics. Hartle and Hawking's new theory treated the universe like a quantum particle. As a result, they created a wave function that could describe all possible universes. The wave function is assumed to have a large value for our own universe, and small, non-zero values for an infinite number of other possible, parallel universes. The other universes are expected to have different physical constants than our universe and are believed to be devoid of life" (The Hartle Hawking No Boundary Proposal). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society. Physical Review D, Volume 28, Number 12, December 15, 1983. pp. 2960-2975. (11.25 x 8.25 inches; 275 x 200mm). Original wraps. Near fine condition.

Rare priced copy of the sale catalogue of Van der Marck's rich library containing a total of 4619 lots, including works on architecture, painting and sculpture as well as 115 manuscripts, 229 incunabula and 284 Aldine editions. Hendrik Adriaan (Henricus Hadrianus) van der Marck was Baron of Leur and canon of the Protestant church of St Marie in Utrecht. An avid book and art enthusiast, he "commissioned the series of 212 fine plates of Biblical scenes which were the starting point for Jacques Saurin's Discours historiques, critiques, théologiques, et moraux, sur les événements les plus memorables du Vieux et du Nouveau Testamant" (Swift). In 1712 Abraham de Hondt published another catalogue under the same title, which most likely described (a part of) the library of Hendrik Andriaan's elder brother Nicolaas Thomas, who died unmarried in 1712. Hendrik Adriaan probably inherited the remaining part of his brother's library. Van der Marck lived at Damstraat 21, Haarlem. When he died in 1740, Pieter Teyler bought his house, which would become the seat of the Teyler Stichting (the "Fundatiehuis").With an 18th-century engraved armorial bookplate on front paste-down, priced throughout in the margins in a contemporary hand, with an early annotation pasted on a flyleaf: "Examiné pour les livres du XVe siecle imprimés aux Pais-Bas", and a small paper lable with a pressmark on spine.         Anne Noggle: "Yolanda: Sic Transit Gloria Sepse," Gelatin Silver Print

Anne Noggle, Albuquerque, New Mexico 1983 - An original, unframed gelatin silver print, "Yolanda: Sic Transit Gloria Sepse," titled, dated 1983 and signed by Noggle in pencil on verso. Image size 12-7/8 x 18-3/4 inches; paper size 16 x 20 inches. CONDITION: Fine. No visible flaws. As Noggle's friend, Yolanda Belloli appeared frequently in the artist's work, and numerous images of her appear in Noggle's 1983 book Silver Lining. The Latin title of this image--which roughly translates as, "So glory fades a bit"--underscores Noggle's unblinking interest in aging. From the artist: "I photograph people, most often older women, focusing on the tension between the iron determinant of age and the individual character of the subject. I try for images that go beneath the surface into that unchanging arena of the human psyche, formed in early life, which grows into maturity but does not relinquish its basic character throughout one's life. That deepest self, discernible only to one who is patient, watchful, and perhaps older oneself. The image I seek is of youth betrayed by age, of spirit strong but fragile with time. I want to show who the people in my pictures are, and how damned difficult it is as each of us in our time becomes them." Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition]

        Mario Giacomelli (Signed Limited Edition)

Carmel: Friends of Photography, 1983. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. This is a very scarce signed, limited edition of \"Mario Giacomelli\" published by Friends of Photography, Carmel in1983 with a limitation of 20 signed and numbered copies this being number 2. Mario Giacomelli is widely regarded as the greatest Italian photographer of the twentieth century. This book contains 40 spectacular tritone plates from his Paesaggio (landscapes) series and a selection from his well known work with people in Italy including the famous Scanno series and Pretini. Giacomelli\'s landscape work is particularly noteworthy. Commenting on his landscape series, he wrote: \"to look at these images...is to feel the surface texture of plants, to know the labour of the land, the sounds of celebration, the games outside the church, old sun-drenched walls, friendship and human company, quiet relaxation, the events, the ceremonial and religious life, the pride and vitality that are the visible phenomena of society.\" The photographs depict an almost idealistic fantasy of how we today imagine the Italian village to look. The prints themselves display Giacomelli\'s characteristic use of strong contrast and striking use of form and texture. Measuring approximately 11.5 x 9.5 inches, the book is bound in linen covered boards (issued without a dust jacket) and has a photograph pasted on the front cover. The book is in Mint condition. The book has been signed and numbered (2 of 20) by Mario Giacomelli on the title page.

Tulipa cultivar 'La Monstreuse ('La Monstreuse' tulip)

      - Provenance: Baron Joseph van Huerne (gift to his grandson) - Joseph de Pelichy - Eyre & Hobhouse (exhibition: The Discovery of Nature, London 1983, item 59). This very fine original botanical watercolour is taken from a compilation of drawings made by Baron Joseph van Huerne in Belgium between about 1790 and 1820, which certainly included 135 (and probably about 170) original watercolour and gouache drawings bound in four albums, each with a manuscript title page 'Collection du Regne Vegetal, Arbres Forestiers et Fruitiers, leurs Fruits. &c' He employed the talents of at least five different artists. A secondary inscription notes the presentation of the albums 'Donné par son grand-Père mons. J. van Huerne à Joseph de Pelichy le 9 Avril 1831'. The albums subsequent history is unclear, but currently Mrs Paul Mellon's Oak Spring Garden Library has one volume [ Oak Spring Sylva 4] and the Royal Horticultural Society in London have two volumes. The fourth volume, from which the present drawing comes, was broken up and dispersed some time before 1983, and the current locations of the other individual drawings are not known, but a selection were exhibited by Eyre & Hobhouse in London in 1983. Water-colour and gouache, inscribed in brown ink (lower margin) 'Regne Vegetal 1. Tulipe dite la monstreuse. du jardin, de Mr. van De Baviere, ci-devant Curé de Terdeghem, à bruges [sic.] en 1808'.

        CATHEDRAL

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1983. First Edition. Softcover. Faint stain on the bottom of the front cover with a small, darker stain on the rear cover. Still Near Fine. Uncorrected Proof in plain blue printed wraps. Although his previous collection achieved some popularity, this title is really Carver's breakthrough and break-away (from the restraints of Gordon Lish's style) book. In it, Carver moved beyond the constraining label of minimalism to mine an emotional depth not present in his previous work and which would blossom fully in his next and last book. The title story and "A Small, Good Thing" rank among the best stories of the latter twentieth century. SIGNED by the author on the title page.

Bighorn Ram, 1983 from Endangered Species (Feldman & Schellmann. II.302).

Ronald Feldman Fine Arts Inc. New York 1983 - Screenprint in colours, signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of 150 (total edition includes 30 artist's proofs), on Lenox Museum Board, with the blindstamp of the printer, Rupert Jasen Smith, the full sheet printed to the edge, sheet: 965 by 965 mm. This series of 10 Screenprints was created in 1983 and came primarily out of Warhol's concern over ecology and love of animals. After a conversation with his New York art dealers Freya and Ronald Feldman, Warhol agreed to produce a body of work based on animals on the endangered species list, at the time of its creation the series was exhibited at the Museum of Natural History in New York to great acclaim and it was also used to illustrate the book Vanishing Animals by Kurt Benirschke. Warhol used his fame and notoriety to bring the issue of conservation to the forefront of popular culture. In these images Andy Warhol explores the image as much as the subject by using his typical "pop" palette of colours.
