Luzern, Faksimile-Vlg., 1983 - Graduale: 2° (50 x 35 cm), 314 farb. Bl. m. 71 tlw. m. Blattgold geschmückten Miniaturen, 13 ornamentale Initialen; Kommentarband: 4°, IX, 347 S., 85 Textabb. u. 1 Schallplatte., Graduale: OLdr. auf 3 echten Bünden m. 2 Ldr.-Schliessen, Eisenbeschlägen u Mittelrosette in Holzkiste. Kommentarbd.: OHLdr., Faksimile tadellos. Kommentarbd.: Min Vergriffen. Nr. 816 von 930 arab. num. Exemplaren. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Love

Dallas: Somesuch Press, 1983. 24pp. This copy features a romantic designer binding by the British bookbinder Nicky Oliver and is also inscribed by Stanley Marcus, noted miniature book collector and proprietor of the Somesuch Press, to his friend and fellow microbibliophile Donn Sanford. A collection of love poems by Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Browning, illustrated with two United States "Love" stamps and a British stamp in honor of St. Valentine's Day. Printed by the Feathered Serpent Press in black with vignettes and ornaments in bright red. Inspired by the hints of red, small illustrations, and swirling floral motifs in the text, Oliver bound the book in fair goatskin that she painted and printed with pieces of floral lace dipped in coral-hued leather dye. The covers have a subtle sheen, and in the artist's statement she notes that "Gold foil was stencilled onto the surface of the leather and distressed to highlight the lace design." Gilt-tooled dots also trace some of the lines of the pattern and decorate all three pink edges of the book. Pieces of lace and oil-based inks were used to relief-print the pink, leather-jointed endpapers, which were also accented with subtle gilt-tooling. Housed in a handsome black quarter-morocco box adorned with decorated leather strips matching the binding and a gilt-titled pink lettering piece to the spine. Oliver's artistic background is in illustration and design, and she seeks to incorporate elements of these into her bindings. She was named a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2010 and has won several awards in their recent competitions. These achievements include "the Silver Triple" in the 2010 competition, with first prize for set book, open choice book, and the Edgar Mansfield Medal for best book. Extremely fine. (Bradbury, p. 281). (2 7/8 by 2 5/8; 73x67mm).

TELEX PERSAN: IN THE NAME OF REVOLUTION ("TELEX IRAN: IN THE NAME OF REVOLUTION") - Rare Signed And Titled Copy of The First Edition - ONLY SIGNED AND TITLED COPY ONLINE

Paris, France: Contrejour, 1983 - 1st Printing. Signed. 104 pages. Published in 1983. Collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, including the Aperture Edition, which is based on it. The edition is now rare. A stupendous production by Gilles Peress and Claude Nori: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Gilles Peress. His telexes are brilliantly reproduced at the bottom of the images and give an urgency not only to the photographs but to the life of one restless photojournalist living in a foreign land from day to day. Essay by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi appended at the end. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in Paris, France to the very highest standards. In publisher's original inner plastic and outer paper shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the finest photographic account ever produced by a Western photojournalist of the Iranian post-revolutionary situation. Peress was appalled by the one-sided and heavily propagandistic American coverage of the Iranian hostage crisis. With money from the National Endowment for the Arts, he flew to Iran on virtually a whim and photographed what he saw, experienced, and felt during a five-week period, from December 1979 through January 1980. The resulting images were lavished with praise and with a rare unanimity: "A book of brilliant visual nervousness between covers" (Cornell Capa). "I appreciate so much the visual strength of Gilles Peress' photographs. They depict an Iran so different from the one I knew through reading and my travels" (Henri Cartier-Bresson). Apart from the sheer vitality of the images, the book has become a landmark in photographic book design and has lost none of its daring innovativeness, impeccable beauty, and palpable immediacy. There is a fluidity to Peress' images that could only have come from his intuitive genius. Peress may never have read Canetti's great book on crowds, "Crowds And Power". But his book is the closest thing photography has ever achieved in capturing groups in action: "To the crowd in its nakedness everything seems a Bastille" (Elias Canetti). "I wanted to be there, to see it with my own eyes, without responsibility or commitment, either political, visual or conceptual, to anyone" (Gilles Peress). A masterpiece, this is an absolute "must-have" title for Gilles Peress collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black marker on the front free endpaper by Gilles Peress. It is also magnificently titled, signed, and dated in metallic-silver marker on the publisher's outer black paper wrap by the photographer: "Telex: Persan Gilles Peress 2006". The signature glows beautifully against the light. This is an Import title and is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the First Edition still available online, is the only such signed and titled copy we have ever found, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap (both the inner plastic and the outer paper), and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 100 plates. Gilles Peress' "Telex: Iran" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living photojournalists. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GILLES PERESS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3931141365. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Telex Iran: In the Name of Revolution.

Aperture, New York 1983 - First American edition, published simultaneously with the first French edition of the photojournalist's first book. Folio, original stiff photographic wrappers, photographic endpapers. Inscribed by Gilles Peress. In fine condition. Roth 101; Open Book, 330; Parr and Badger II, 252. Peress described his art well when he said, "I work much more like a forensic photographer in a certain way, collecting evidence. I've started to take more still lifes, like a police photographer, collecting evidence as a witness. I've started to borrow a different strategy than that of the classic photojournalist. The work is much more factual and much less about good photography. I don't care that much anymore about "good photography." I'm gathering evidence for history, so that we remember" (U.S. News). "Telex Iran chronicles the crisis in United States-Iran relations in late 1979 and early 1980 when militant Iranian students seized the American Embassy and held its inhabitants hostage. Peress' book is oversized, graphically bold and provides numerous perspectives on an extremely sensitive political problem Along with reportage of major political events, Peress' pictures record mundane spaces, places, people and moments of Iranian life in order to emphasize the incomprehensibility and confusion of the environment before his eyes. In this way the photographer is able to visualize precisely the culture gap that made such a historical misunderstanding possible. It is a brilliant tactic" (Roth, 28). One of six advance copies misbound by the publisher in decorated paper over boards (instead of decorated cloth); production was immediately stopped and publication was delayed.         CURSE OF LONO (THREE BOOKS, THREE DIFFERENT EDITIONS)

Bantam and Taschen - A little collection, consisting of: 1) The FIRST EDITION by Bantam, 1983, first printing, softcover, 10 by 7 inches, which, other than an almost invisible bit of foxing to edges, is in fine condition. 2) The much larger hardcover (15 by 11), Taschen's FIRST TRADE EDITION, in smooth white boards with Steadman's goofy lettering in black. I can find no indication of date on this. It is also in fine condition, in a fine illustrated dustjacket. 3) The "whopper," published by Taschen and dated on the title page "December 1, 2004." (Later than the smaller first trade edition.) This is their FIRST LIMITED EDITION. 17½ by 13 inches. Bound in white cloth decorated with Steadman's lettering and artwork (the blue and brown, cigarette in mouth portrait of Thompson that also appears on the cover of the softcover edition and on the dustjacket of the other Taschen edition). The page after the title page contains: "LONO/ This book is copy number AP 155/200 of a worldwide edition of one thousand copies" (while there were 1000 copies printed, only 200 were signed) followed by Thompson's signature in ink, followed by (printed) "Hunter S. Thompson - Woody Creek, Colorado" followed by Steadman's signature and a drawing in ink, followed by (printed) "Ralph Steadman - Kent, England" and "December 1, 2004." Both signatures and the drawing are "actual," not facsimiles. A few pages farther on, there are two (facsimile) letters tipped in, one from the editor of Running Magazine asking Thompson to cover the Honolulu Marathon, which led to the expedition that led to this book being written, and one from Thompson to Steadman about this, beginning with, "I think we have a live one this time, old sport." This is one of those "books" that could be more accurately described, perhaps, as an extravaganza ("extravagonzo?"). It is in fine condition, as too are the accessories that go with it - the burnt orange cloth covered slipcase that is printed on the front and one side, and the heavy-duty cardboard box that is printed front and back and two sides, and has a label on one side declaring (once again) that this is copy #155 of 200."         Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade), A Facsimile of the Manuscript, 2 Vols. A Bruccoli Clark Book

Gale Research Company, Detroit 1983 - First edition, 1983. Two volumes, complete. Full leather with beautiful color inlay and onlay Zaehnsdorf bindings with gilt titles and gilt edges housed in cloth slipcase, clean unmarked text, Fine copies in Near Fine slipcase. Published by Gale as a Bruccoli-Clark title, this deluxe edition comes from Matthew Bruccoli's own collection, and we have been told by Rick Layman (Bruccoli's publishing partner) that Zaehnsdorf bound fewer than 50 sets this way to market to collectors, but that Gale trashed the majority of these, as they remained unsold. Matthew Joseph Bruccoli (1931-2008) was the foremost F. Scott Fitzgerald scholar and bibliographer of his time. Additionally, he wrote on, and edited critical editions of Hemingway, Hammett, Cozzens, Thomas Wolfe, John O'Hara, and Vladimir Nabokov. He studied bibliography under the tutelage of Fredson Bowers and worked with Jacob Blanck on the Bibliography of American Literature. He was responsible for the republication and rediscovery of dozens of forgotten American novels, and went on to be the editor and publisher of the 400+ volume Dictionary of Literary Biography, and was the chief editor of the University of Pittsburgh Press bibliography series.
