Collection of 65 Event Posters from the A-House, Provincetown, MA. ca 1983-1999

Provincetown, MA: Atlantic House, ca.1983-1999. Large group of event posters from Atlantic House, or A-House, located in Provincetown, MA and considered by many to be the oldest Gay Bar in the U.S. The Atlantic House was built in 1798 by Daniel Pease, Provincetown's first Postmaster, and operated by him until his death in 1834. The building changed hands and names several times until 1871, when it was purchased by Frank Potter Smith and named Atlantic House - a name which has stuck permanently. During the 1920's, A-House was the hangout for writers like Eugene O'Neill and Tennessee Williams (a nude photo of Williams strolling on Provincetown beaches hangs in the bar), as well as any number of alternate lifestylists. In 1950 ownership was taken over by Reginald Cabral, and since then, it became both truly "gay friendly" and the most popular watering hole in Provincetown. Since the early 50's, A-House has held weekly theme parties in the big room (their disco), and has has a dedicated Macho Room upstairs, a bar for "Leather Men" and their admirers (www.ahouse.com/history.html). & & The present collection shows a superb representative sampling of posters advertising key A-House events: the annual White Party, Military Ball, Tattoo Party, the Harvest Moon Ball, the Glitter & Glamor Party, and a host of others. The posters were all illustrated or designed by various artists; many sport hand-drawn homoerotic artwork, others depict well-built shirtless celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean Claude Van Damme, with several examples reproducing photographs taken by Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe. A number of the posters bear sobering reminders of life at the height of the AIDS scare: posters entitled "Safe Sex Sluts," "BENEFIT - Sid, One of Our Own," and a 1994 Benefit poster for the Provincetown AIDS Support Group, prominently featuring a portrait of Judy Garland. The earliest posters are dated 1983, though a good many of them have the appearance of being earlier, as well as a group of color-copied posters likely dating from the late 1990's. A substantial group of posters from one of this country's historic and longest-running gay establishments. 65 posters, ca.10" x 15" - 14" x 17", offset printed or xeroxed in black & white and in colors on variously-colored stock; illus. A few examples with light edgewear, occasional spotting or grime on verso, faint creases and short tears - Very Good or better, with the majority being clean, Near Fine examples.

Wave Function of the Universe" in Physical Review D 28 No. 12, 15 December 1983, pp. 2960-2975

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the paper in which James Hartle and Stephen Hawking propose a theory for the creation of the universe. Hartle and Hawking's theory was in response to a perceived problem of the "inflationary theory, namely that it does not explain what may have occurred before the inflation of the universe. Their theory was based in the idea that the universe did not have a boundary, just as the earth does not have a boundary. For example, one may travel around the earth and not come to a boundary or fall off. In addition, the theory was based on quantum theory, a superset theory encompassing general relativity and quantum mechanics. Hartle and Hawking's new theory treated the universe like a quantum particle. As a result, they created a wave function that could describe all possible universes. The wave function is assumed to have a large value for our own universe, and small, non-zero values for an infinite number of other possible, parallel universes. The other universes are expected to have different physical constants than our universe and are believed to be devoid of life" (The Hartle Hawking No Boundary Proposal). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society. Physical Review D, Volume 28, Number 12, December 15, 1983. pp. 2960-2975. (11.25 x 8.25 inches; 275 x 200mm). Original wraps. In 1712 Abraham de Hondt published another catalogue under the same title, which most likely described (a part of) the library of Hendrik Andriaan's elder brother Nicolaas Thomas, who died unmarried in 1712. Hendrik Adriaan probably inherited the remaining part of his brother's library. Van der Marck lived at Damstraat 21, Haarlem.         Anne Noggle: "Yolanda: Sic Transit Gloria Sepse," Gelatin Silver Print

Anne Noggle, Albuquerque, New Mexico 1983 - An original, unframed gelatin silver print, "Yolanda: Sic Transit Gloria Sepse," titled, dated 1983 and signed by Noggle in pencil on verso. Image size 12-7/8 x 18-3/4 inches; paper size 16 x 20 inches. CONDITION: Fine. No visible flaws. As Noggle's friend, Yolanda Belloli appeared frequently in the artist's work, and numerous images of her appear in Noggle's 1983 book Silver Lining. The Latin title of this image--which roughly translates as, "So glory fades a bit"--underscores Noggle's unblinking interest in aging. From the artist: "I photograph people, most often older women, focusing on the tension between the iron determinant of age and the individual character of the subject. I try for images that go beneath the surface into that unchanging arena of the human psyche, formed in early life, which grows into maturity but does not relinquish its basic character throughout one's life. That deepest self, discernible only to one who is patient, watchful, and perhaps older oneself. The image I seek is of youth betrayed by age, of spirit strong but fragile with time. I want to show who the people in my pictures are, and how damned difficult it is as each of us in our time becomes them." Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition]

        Mario Giacomelli (Signed Limited Edition)

Carmel: Friends of Photography, 1983. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. This is a very scarce signed, limited edition of \"Mario Giacomelli\" published by Friends of Photography, Carmel in1983 with a limitation of 20 signed and numbered copies this being number 2. Mario Giacomelli is widely regarded as the greatest Italian photographer of the twentieth century. This book contains 40 spectacular tritone plates from his Paesaggio (landscapes) series and a selection from his well known work with people in Italy including the famous Scanno series and Pretini. Giacomelli\'s landscape work is particularly noteworthy. Commenting on his landscape series, he wrote: \"to look at these images...is to feel the surface texture of plants, to know the labour of the land, the sounds of celebration, the games outside the church, old sun-drenched walls, friendship and human company, quiet relaxation, the events, the ceremonial and religious life, the pride and vitality that are the visible phenomena of society.\" The photographs depict an almost idealistic fantasy of how we today imagine the Italian village to look. The prints themselves display Giacomelli\'s characteristic use of strong contrast and striking use of form and texture. Measuring approximately 11.5 x 9.5 inches, the book is bound in linen covered boards (issued without a dust jacket) and has a photograph pasted on the front cover. The book is in Mint condition. The book has been signed and numbered (2 of 20) by Mario Giacomelli on the title page.
