The Name of the Rose [Signed]

San Diego, New York, London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich [A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book], 1983. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good +. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first American edition of this breakthrough Umberto Eco novel (light pushing to the spine ends, spine shows mild evidence of the book having been read, front board's upper right corner tapped, slight impression to the upper margins of pages where the reader presumably marked his or her place with a clean paper clip - from which no staining or marking resulted), in a Very Good + dust jacket (spine panel lightly sunned, light edge rubbing), SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO on the title page. An historical murder mystery set in Italian monastery in the year 1327 and Eco's debut novel, the novel combines semiotics, biblical analysis, medieval studies, and literary theory. [Eco is a semiotician of the first order and a University Professor, essayist, philosopher, literary critic, and novelist.] In the story, a Franciscan friar, William of Baskerville, and his novice Adso of Melk -- who narrates the story, arrive at an Italian monastery to attend a theological disputation only to find the monastery disturbed by a recent suicide. A number of other monks then die under mysterious circumstances and William is asked to conduct an investigation. The novel provided the basis for the 1986 movie of the same name starring Sean Connery as William of Baskerville and Christian Slater as Adso of Melk. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of Umberto Eco's notable breakthrough novel, SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO.

Signed, 'To Polly Hicks, Merry Christmas, - 1983, Harper Lee.' Condition of the book is NF. Condition of the dustjacket is VG. This grade assigned as the book exhibits a bit of wear to the head of the spine. An excellent copy with a nice association.         ARCHIVE OF LETTERS: 21 pages

1983 - 1990 1983 - Superb archive of seven letters from the author of ANGELA'S ASHES to R'Lene Dahlberg, fellow teacher at Stuyvesant High School, friend, wife of author Edward Dahlberg, and muse. Mostly chatty correspondence, all but two pages handwritten by McCourt, complete with hand-addressed envelopes and mostly written in New York City. In one letter McCourt describes being at Rockaway Beach with his daughter Maggie who is searching for her lost hamster with a friend: "The little bugger won't come out. I've tempted him with everything from carrots to watercress. I've made assorted seductive noises. I've exposed mineself. I've even promised him a night out with a hamsteress. To no avail. Maggie & Clare are less interested in hamsters than in boys. It's all boys now. Boys, boys, boys. I'll break her face. She checks herself out in the mirror by the hour. I told her cut it out. She [sic] wearing out the mirror. Also, I'm getting an education in teeny bop mating habits and teeny bop music. Pubescence is a pain in the arse." In the same letter he describes an encounter with "a maiden" who "had her way with me on the pitcher's mound in the local baseball field. She was a Catholic, too, and told me I was much better than a state of grace. You could always regain your state of grace, she said, but the way I was drinking she decided to get me while she could before I became a shadow of my former self. Does this make sense to you? I'll clean it all up in the novel I'm writing called IN THE FLESH." McCourt also discusses the IRA, his divorce from Alberta, his tour with his brother Malachi and the rave reviews they were getting, how much he likes Chicago, teaching, etc. In one letter he gives a list of saints. All letters are SIGNED "Frank," with one SIGNED "Frank, son of Angela." Also included is a handwritten note by R'Lene Dahlberg describing her relationship to McCourt which, by all accounts, seems to have cooled dramatically upon the publication of the Pulitzer Prize winning ANGELA'S ASHES. McCourt admired Edward Dahlberg's superb autobiography BECAUSE I WAS FLESH and modeled his own ANGELA'S ASHES after it, both writers casting their mothers as the central characters. Both emerged from impoverished childhoods to achieve success, though Dahlberg's was critical rather than financial. Dahlberg was dead when ANGELA'S ASHES was published in 1996, but his former wife, R'lene Dahlberg, was alive. She was the first person to encourage McCourt to publish his work and stated in a private note (included here) that she "got him his first publication- called 'If you live in a lane.'" Her importance to McCourt was publicly acknowledged by him in his book where she is listed first on the Acknowledgments page:"This is a small hymn to an exaltation of women.R'lene Dahlberg fanned the embers."McCourt told friends a funny tale of walking with Edward Dahlberg down Second Avenue. Dahlberg was "pontificating like Jehova" and as they approached the Jewish funeral home where his "sainted" mother had been laid out, Dahlberg stepped in dog excrement."How can letters flourish in the commonwealth," Dahlberg immediately raved, "when pederasts are permitted to parade their poodles to dung on the pavement!"He removed his soiled shoe and threw it in the city garbage can, continuing home with one shoe on and one shoe gone.         Time Out of Mind and Strappado Square

Wolfhound Press, Dublin, Ireland 1983 - A unread copy of the true first print and first edition of a book which contains two early novellas by Sebastian Barry. There is some very slight toning to the text block due to the cheap paper used in production of this title. Some very slight softening to the lower spine and to one bottom tip. The jacket is as new, bright and unclipped. Impossibly scarce, as the book had to be withdrawn by its publishers, Wolfhound Press, following the threat of a libel action.         Don Quixote

1983 - Original unpublished pen and ink drawing of Don Quixote, measuring 15” x 23,” with Moser’s pencil caption: “Feodor Chaliapin as Don Quichotte – Barry Moser 1983.” The frontal-view portrait depicts Don Quixote with his head upturned, hair on end, mustache and goatee bristling, neck muscles straining, and eyes bulging with adventure. Cervantes’s story fascinated Russian bass Chaliapin, who starred in Jules Massenet’s memorable opera "Don Quichotte," which premiered in 1910, as well as director G. W. Pabst’s film "Adventures of Don Quixote," which was released in French, German, and English sound versions in 1933. Cervantes’s story also long fascinated Moser, who, 22 years after penning this unpublished portrait of Don Quixote, illustrated Barbara Nichols’s "Tales of Don Quixote." Professionally matted.         The Smoke That Thunders

New Horizon Press, UK 1983 - Exceedingly rare work by Irish author Quigley. Fine black leatherette hardcover with smidge of white on foot of rear board fore edge. Tips and spine ends sharp. Internally crisp and unmarked. 241pp. Pink background dj illustrated with warriors mask is lightly sunned on backstrip but has no tears or soil. Out of the bitter trouble times in Ireland emerges a man called Tom Sutton. Running from the shattered past he finds himself almost destitute on the vast continent of Africa. Then a bowl of soup changes his life. He travels north to seek a new adventurous future and make a little girl's dream come true. But was his past completely shattered, or was he destined to meet it face to face? During the trouble times in Ireland, Tom Sutton, a wanted man, loses his wife in a raid and belives his son suffered the same fate. He is forced to escape, and finds himself on the vast continent of Africa, sinking into the shame and degradation of alcohol. A little girl brings him back from a living death and together with her and his only friend from the trouble times, they travel north, through the small working gold mines of Southern Rhodesia to The Smoke That Thunders (Victoria Falls), finally settling in Northern Rhodesia. He attempts to build a new life with the help of a devoted African servant and friend, trying to forget the past. His son, whom he thought had died, was adopted by the Major who seeked to destroy Sutton during the trouble times; he re-enters the story in search of revenge on the father who deserted him. The story relates the complicated position between Heide, the child, fast reaching womanhood; Maria, the woman who shared Sutton's bed; and the memory of Grace and what she would have thought of him. Then there is Bradley, who, in a desperate bid to hid his own foul secret, commits destruction and murder in an attempt to move Sutton off his land, and John, his son, who would do or try anything if it could hurt his father. Could he even watch his father being mauled by a savage wounded lion? Weasal Byrn, the likeable little man, his friend at the start and at the end of a long and moving journey, and Simalala, the trusted servant, who would give his life for Sutton and gavit it for his son in a most bloody and gruelling way as can only be part of Africa in the raw. This is Tom Sutton's story, often funny, often sad, but filled with excitement as big as Africa and only The Smoke That Thunders determines the explosive climax of their hatred, passion and future.         Skin Summer

American Art Enterprises 1983 - Dean Koontz penname. Originally published in 1970 by Cameo. This book is one of a number of 30 or so books Dean Koontz wrote for Cameo books early in his career under various pennames (like Gracie Amber or Leonard Chris), and one book he actually published under his own name (Bounce Girl). Dean Koontz has since disavowed and otherwise denied having ever written such books (besides Bounce Girl which was published under his own name and the Leonard Chris book "Hung"), but the evidence is undisputable: The Library of Congress confirms that Gerda Ann Koontz (Dean's wife) holds the copyrights to this book. "Ann" is one of the five names listed in the dedication of the gothic romance "Demon Child" (which Koontz wrote under the penname of Deanna Dwyer). All five of the first names listed in the dedication of "Demon Child" have turned out to be pseudonyms that Dean had used for this particular "Adult" literature. In an article written by Dean Koontz entitled "Dean's Drive" in the sci-fi fanzine Energumen #8 (6/71), Dean Koontz admitted to writing 30 of these books in 1970, along with Pig Society and The Underground Lifestyles Handbook (both of which were also published by the same publisher, Cameo books in 1970). One of the titles that Dean Koontz admits to having written ("Thirteen and Ready") was written under the penname of Ann Griffin. In an early sci-fi fanzine, Beabohema #8 (1970), Dean Koontz again talked about writing these books. The authors initials (A.G.) are simply Dean's wife's initials in reverse. One of the Ann Griffin cameo books "Protest Ball," lists the author's address as Harrisburg, Pennsylviania (where Dean and his wife were living in 1970). Finally, in Dean Koontz's writing how-to book "How to Write Popular Fiction" (1972), he refers to these books and specifically to the Ann Griffin penname. Book has very faint stress mark on spine (no hard spine crease) and no spine lean, no crease to front cover, crease to top edge on rear cover, no soiling or staining to white covers, no former owner markings or used bookstore markings inside, no missing pages, no creased pages, pages are flat and tight and appear unread, bottom right corner has been rounded (often found with remaindered books). Overall a FINE-/N-FINE book of this rare 1980s Dean Koontz first printing pen name book. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Dean Koontz 1st printing hardcover/paperback/magazine appearances up for sale. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The controversies of his art continue to the present.Having introduced all sorts of new subjects into his paintings: bulls, guardian figures, roosters, fish, and, more shocking, penises on all the animals and even coming out of the head of Dharma, it is little wonder that the traditionalists were horrified."--Introduction ; Jung Kwang's reputation as "The Mad Monk" is here fully represented by the use of color, non-traditional brushes and pens, even to the shocking photographs of him using his penis as th e brush on a series of paintings! ; he was ordained a monk in the Chongye Buddhist Order at Tong-do Monastery near Pusan in 1962 and practiced meditation under direction of Master Kuha, and was later a member of the Chongye National Council as its art consultant, but was then expelled in 1983, presumably for his movement away from traditional forms ; nonetheless, there are many who would consider the paintings in this book enlightened visual Zen koans of a sublime nature ; SIGNED presentation by Jung Kwang from 1986 on the front ep ; folio, bound in color pictorial stiff paper wrappers ; some wear, but otherwise VG.       Printed by S Roycroft for Robert Clavel at the Peacock, London 1983 - [a2-a6]+[b-b7]+[c-c7]+[d-231]+[5] pages. Small square octavo (7 ¾" x 6 ¼") bound in full leather. Second edition. Thomas Barlow (1607-1691) was an English academic and clergyman, who became Provost of The Queen's College, Oxford and Bishop of Lincoln. He was considered, in his own times and by Edmund Venables writing in the Dictionary of National Biography, to have been a trimmer, a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were in fact Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic, and he was one of the last English bishops to identify the Pope as the Antichrist He worked in the 1660s for the 'comprehension' of nonconformists, but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s; and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession, having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill which would have denied the Catholic James the succession. Pope Pius V's response to Queen Elizabeth I of England assuming governance of the Church of England included support of the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots, and her supporters in their attempts to take over England "ex turpissima muliebris libidinis servitute". A brief English Catholic uprising, the Rising of the North, had just failed. Pius then issued a bull, Regnans in Excelsis, dated April 27, 1570, that declared Elizabeth I a heretic and released her subjects from their allegiance to her. In response, Elizabeth, who had thus far tolerated Catholic worship in private, now actively started persecuting them. Condition: Original bards with new period spine and red label with gilt lettering to spine corners rubbed and bumped else a good to very good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An outstanding pair of Richard Nixon letters regarding defensive missile systems and the nuclear arms race

New York, NY, 1983 & 1984 Two typed letters signed ?RN? on Nixon's personal New York City stationery. Both letters are written to Joseph Kingsbury-Smith of Hearst Newspapers in Washington DC. Each measure 7.5" x10.5"The first letter is dated December 21, 1983, and reads: "With regard to your letter of December 12th, I hope that you will be able to follow through in urging joint Soviet/American development of non-nuclear defense systems in space. As you note, I covered this issue only briefly because of space limitations on pages 37 and 38 of Real Peace. I believe that a formal proposal that the Soviet Union join us in sharing research on such systems could well be the centerpiece of any arms control agreements that might be reached at a summit meeting. If we could proceed along these lines, the argument that developing a nulear defense system is an escalation of the arms race is completely demolished. If both countries go forward together, the goal would be to develop a common shield. If either acts sin

The books and dust-jackets are all in very handsome and pleasing condition. FIRST EDITION COMPLETE OF ONE OF THE MOST MONUMENTAL HISTORICAL TASKS EVER UNDERTAKEN, RESULTING IN ONE OF THE GREAT HISTORICAL WORKS EVER PRODUCED. Randolph Churchill, who began this great work with Martin Gilbert in the early 1960’s had the exclusive use of Sir Winston’s letters and papers. The form in which is the work is cast is summed up in the phrase that Randolph Churchill quotes from Lockhart: "He shall be his own biographer." And the authors present Churchill, a far as possible, through his own words. The first volume covers the years from Churchill’s birth to his return to England from an American lecture tour on the day of Queen Victoria’s funeral, in order to embark on his political career. The final volume spans Churchill’s life from the defeat of Germany in 1945 to his death nearly twenty years later. ‘No statesman of modern times--or indeed of any earlier age--has left such a wealth of personal letters, such a rich seam of private and public documentation, such vivid memories in the minds of those who worked closest to him or were at his side at both historic and amusing moments. Through these materials, assembled by Martin Gilbert during more than twenty years, one can trace Churchill’s moods, aims, actions, hopes and farsightedness. The many-sided nature of Churchill’s abilities, his enormous capacity for work when well into his seventies, his literary achievements, his optimism, his humanity, his humour, his belief in man’s capacity for self-improvement and survival, fill this volume with a rich tapestry of people and events, dominated not by the day-to-day struggle of politics and international conflicts but by an abiding sensitivity. Randolph Churchill died just after the second volume of this massive work was produced and Martin Gilbert continued the writing . He is one of Britain’s most distinguished historians. Following Randolph’s death in 1968 he was appointed the Official Biographer. During the twenty-five years spent on the biography, which reached completion in 1988, Mr. Gilbert wrote many other books on modern European history including AUSCHWITZ AND THE ALLIES, THE HOLOCAUST, and THE SECOND WORLD WAR as well as serving as editor of thirteen volumes of Churchill documents. The eight volume work offered here has been hailed as " stupendous achievement.of immense and permanent value." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
