The Curse of Lono

NY: Bantam. (1983). Text by Thompson and illustrations by Steadman, recounting the duo's trip to cover the Honolulu marathon for Running magazine. Thompson's fifth book, and his fourth collaboration with Steadman. This copy is signed by the author "H.S. Thompson." Only issued in wrappers (until a Taschen edition in 2005). Near fine with a shallow stain at the upper outer corner and a bit of wear at the base of the spine. One of the scarcest books to find signed by Thompson, perhaps because the perfectbound sheets tend to pop loose if the book is opened too widely or too roughly. First Edition. Softcover.

London: Century. 1983-1985. First. Five volumes, each volume is a first edition. Very slight aging to the cheap paper pages, still easily fine in fine dustwrappers. A lovely and uniform set of five volumes of this epic and well-regarded fantasy series, with spines as nearly uniform as they are ever likely to be. TYPED LETTER - Signed

Los Angeles, California 1983 - Typed letter signed on personal letterhead dated March 5, 1983. Normal folds do not affect signature. The letter make reference to Glen who is Glen Keane another longtime Disney animator. "Dear Mike: Thank you for your complimentary comments about my work. I certainly enjoyed all my years at Disney's and loved animating. Of course, the great thing was all the talented people that I had a chance to work with. We had a great team there, and I owe any success I had to all of those people. Glen was very stimulating to work with and I look for great things from him. He gets very exciting and entertaining work on the screen and I think communicates better with the audience than most of the young guys. Thanks again for your nice letter and best wishes to you. Haida Monumental Art

Vancouver: Univ of British Columbia Pr. Hardcover. 0774801557 218 pages. From limited edition of 1600 copies. "Concerned entirely with the Haidas of the Queen Charlotte Islands of the last century, the intricacies of the kinship patterns of the great families, and how they saw themselves as part of a fantastic, but in its own terms, logical, cosmos, and most of all how this was all expressed in their remarkable architecture with its perfectly integrated massive carved and painted embellishments, the great totem poles of the Haidas." - from Foreward. "The documentary photographs that survive are among the few remaining records which illustrate the richness and variety of Haida monumental art. Of the more than five hundred carved poles which appear in the plates, only about fifty were removed to museums for safekeeping. The remainder have perished entirely or survive at the village sites as decayed fragments overgrown with the lush vegetation of the islands." - from Preface. Light external wear and soiling to cream-coloured cloth-covered boards. No external markings. Discreet bookplate and bit of writing inside front board. Blindstamp to lower corner of title page. Bit of writing in upper left corner of title page. Remnant of card pocket inside back board. Binding tight. A quality copy of this magnificent work. . Very Good. 1983. First Edition.

        3. INTERNATIONALES BAUHAUS KOLLOQUIUM 5-7 JULI 1983. Original poster for the 3rd International Bauhaus Colloquium designed by Werner Nerlich and illustrated with Herbert Bayer's architectural drawing of Walter Gropius' office

Weimar, Germany, 1983.. 1983.. Good. - sc - A 32-1/2 inch high by 22-3/8 inch wide (80,4 cm high by 57 cm wide) color poster designed by Werner Nerlich for the third Bauhaus Colloquium. The poster, titled "3. Internationales Bauhaus Kolloquium 5-7 Juli 1983 : Hochschule fur Architektur und Bauwesen Weimar" is illustrated with Herbert Bayer's isometric rendering of the Bauhaus director's office designed by Walter Gropius. The image is framed by color & shading scales along the top and bottom and is reproduced in offset lithograph on glossy paper from what is apparently a photograph by Eberhard Renno. There are heavy creases to the corners and edges with chips and tiny tears to the edges, including a short tear to the lower left edge and faint pinholes to the corners, which can all easily be matted out. Good.
This powerful poster for the third International Bauhaus Colloquium (the first having been held in 1976), is designed by the artist Werner Nerlich (1915-1999) who, after having studied art with Hans Orlowski and Max Kaus, was called up for military service. He promptly switched sides and served with the German-comprised Anti-Nazi National Committee for a Free Germany which served on the side of the Red Army against the German forces. After the war, he was responsible for constructing the East German road system. By 1946, Nerlich was designing posters and prints and, along with Otto Nagel, Max Pechstein, Karl Hofer, and others, organized exhibitions in the Villa Kellermann and the Potsdam stables. In 1947, he founded and was artistic director of the art school in Potsdam and later director of the College of Applied Arts in Potsdam.
Rare.
