        3. INTERNATIONALES BAUHAUS KOLLOQUIUM 5-7 JULI 1983. Original poster for the 3rd International Bauhaus Colloquium designed by Werner Nerlich and illustrated with Herbert Bayer's architectural drawing of Walter Gropius' office.

Weimar, Germany, 1983. - - sc - A 32-1/2 inch high by 22-3/8 inch wide (80,4 cm high by 57 cm wide) color poster designed by Werner Nerlich for the third Bauhaus Colloquium. The poster, titled "3. Internationales Bauhaus Kolloquium 5-7 Juli 1983 : Hochschule fur Architektur und Bauwesen Weimar" is illustrated with Herbert Bayer's isometric rendering of the Bauhaus director's office designed by Walter Gropius. The image is framed by color & shading scales along the top and bottom and is reproduced in offset lithograph on glossy paper from what is apparently a photograph by Eberhard Renno. There are heavy creases to the corners and edges with chips and tiny tears to the edges, including a short tear to the lower left edge and faint pinholes to the corners, which can all easily be matted out. Good. This powerful poster for the third International Bauhaus Colloquium (the first having been held in 1976), is designed by the artist Werner Nerlich (1915-1999) who, after having studied art with Hans Orlowski and Max Kaus, was called up for military service. He promptly switched sides and served with the German-comprised Anti-Nazi National Committee for a Free Germany which served on the side of the Red Army against the German forces. After the war, he was responsible for constructing the East German road system. By 1946, Nerlich was designing posters and prints and, along with Otto Nagel, Max Pechstein, Karl Hofer, and others, organized exhibitions in the Villa Kellermann and the Potsdam stables. In 1947, he founded and was artistic director of the art school in Potsdam and later director of the College of Applied Arts in Potsdam.Rare. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Karsh: A Fifty-Year Retrospective

University Of Toronto Press 1983 - Personally inscribed by Yousuf Karsh on first blank pages in black ink. The inscription reads, "Inscribed for Diana Schneider. From her friend Jerry Fielder and with the warm regards of Yousuf Karsh December 1987". Yousuf Karsh (1908 - 2002) was born in Armenia in 1908 and grew up under the horrors of the Armenian massacres. His photographer uncle, George Nakash, brought him to Canada in 1924. After an apprenticeship in Boston with the eminent portrait photographer John H. Garo, Karsh settled in Ottawa in 1932, where he began his professional career. As early as 1936 he was photographing visiting statesmen and dignitaries, among them President Franklin Roosevelt. In December of 1941, his memorable portrait of a glowering, defiant Winston Churchill, which symbolized Britain's indomitable wartime courage, brought Karsh into international prominence. One of the most widely reproduced portraits in the history of photography, the Churchill portrait was among the first to bear the now-familiar "Karsh of Ottawa" copyright, which has since appeared in publications and on commemorative stamps all over the world. Karsh's major photographic exhibitions have attracted enthusiastic audiences worldwide, and he is much in demand as an eloquent and engaging speaker. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Canada,- the National Portrait Gallery, London, and other leading museums. He is a recipient of the Canada Council Medal and is a Companion of the Order of Canada (akin to a knighthood). Karsh was awarded the Presidential Citation (U.S.A.) for meritorious service on behalf of the handicapped. He has been Visiting Professor of Fine Arts at Ohio University at Athens and Emerson College in Boston, and has received more than two dozen honorary degrees.         Haida Monumental Art

Univ of British Columbia Pr, Vancouver 1983 - 0774801557 218 pages. From limited edition of 1600 copies. "Concerned entirely with the Haidas of the Queen Charlotte Islands of the last century, the intricacies of the kinship patterns of the great families, and how they saw themselves as part of a fantastic, but in its own terms, logical, cosmos, and most of all how this was all expressed in their remarkable architecture with its perfectly integrated massive carved and painted embellishments, the great totem poles of the Haidas." - from Foreward. "The documentary photographs that survive are among the few remaining records which illustrate the richness and variety of Haida monumental art. Of the more than five hundred carved poles which appear in the plates, only about fifty were removed to museums for safekeeping. The remainder have perished entirely or survive at the village sites as decayed fragments overgrown with the lush vegetation of the islands." - from Preface. Light external wear and soiling to cream-coloured cloth-covered boards. No external markings. Discreet bookplate and bit of writing inside front board. Blindstamp to lower corner of title page. Bit of writing in upper left corner of title page. Remnant of card pocket inside back board. Binding tight. A quality copy of this magnificent work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
