The Colour Of Magic (With NO Revised Text Overlay Affixed On The Wrapper : Signed By Sir Terry Pratchett)

Colin Smythe, Gerrards Cross 1983 - The First UK printing published by Colin Smythe in 1983.The BOOK is in near FINE condition. The original mid green boards are clean with a hint of pushing to the tail of the lower spine and the tiniest of bumps to front upper edge. The book appears unread. The pages are very clean and there is NO offsetting or browning to the pages. The gilt lettering on the spine remains very bright. The WRAPPER is complete and is in FINE condition. There is NO fading of the blue colouring on the spine. The white flaps are very clean.Publisher's correct price sticker on the lower front flap. Exceptionally scarce to find the true first issue wrapper in such superb condition. The Alan Smith designed wrapper artwork looks very bold and striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The Wrapper DOES NOT have the publisher's overlay affixed on the front flap carrying the revised text (Colin Smythe the publisher was unhappy with the blurb that St Martin's Press had put on the front flap,so had revised text by means of an overlay affixed on most copies). The book has been SIGNED by SIR TERRY PRACHETT to the title page.A letter of provenance will accompany the book regarding the authenticity of the signature. The first book in the "Discworld" series, of which 506 copies were printed, a considerable number being sold to libraries. It is thought that of the 506 books printed ,400 or so had the revised publisher's text overlay subsequently affixed to the front flap.Copies which escaped both the library and the overlay are extremely scarce.Housed in a custom made slipcase. The first copy as such in over 15 years that we have encountered.A truly scarce item and a Sir Terry Pratchett "Discworld" iconic title.More detailed photos are available on request. ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.         Sweeney Astray - WORLD First Printing Hardback

Field Day, Derry 1983 - Full buckram binding. This is the true world First Edition, First Impression. Signed by Author. A wonderful version from the Irish by this acclaimed Nobel winning poet with superb two colour typography. This beautiful production from Field Day is a much sought after book, and especially rare in a signed copy as this. The Nobel Laureate has signed this on the title page. He has dated it as '26.6.87' so it is later than the publication date of 1983. He has also cancelled his printed name. There is an illustration on the front cover of the jacket, by Colin Middleton with a slightly adapted version of the same drawing used on the buckram front binding inside a recess. Two internal drawings, one of a bird’s nest, containing the head of a bird and a human hand and the other a further appearance of the cover device but printed in sanguine ink. All the drawings are by Middleton. This is a very difficult title to find signed. I ordered it from Field Day and wish I had ordered more copies, because it quickly sold out. I have left the price sticker on the back cover, which says £8! I obtained the signature at a reading on London’s South Bank.Slight foxing to a few pages, and a neat former owner blind stamp and name to the half title, which explains why this is Near Fine. Jacket is protected and unclipped, and it is without any damage or spine fade. Very rare indeed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

In the late 1970s, Tom Phillips began a seven year project to both illustrate and translate Dante's Inferno. It was to be a translation, from Dante's Italian into contemporary English, but also from one language of the page, the chiefly verbal, into another, the verbal-visual combined glyph of the illustrated book. In this copy, ALL OF THE PRINTS ARE INDIVIDUALLY INITIALED IN PENCIL BY THE ARTIST. Beautifully printed on fine wove paper specially made for this edition, which is limited to 180 copies, of which this is one of 100. The justification, which is another full-page print, is also signed by Phillips.

However, a few years later, Ted did accept my invitation to read at Harbourfront. Shortly after he arrived at the Harbour Castle Westin (where all of the authors at each year’s festival were accommodated) he asked me to go to his room with him as he had a little gift for me. Somewhat sheepishly he handed me the typescript of "Little Whale Song". I say "sheepishly" because he was clearly embarrassed as he explained that he had written the poem for me almost immediately after receiving my request. He told me he pinned the typescript over his desk because he felt sure he could improve upon it before sending it on to me. He told me the poem stared at him guiltily every day for months and months until, one day, he realized my deadline had passed. Then he told me that as he prepared to come to Toronto for my festival, he looked at the poem again [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        La communauté inavouable

First Edition, one of 57 numbered copies on Arches, ours one of seven trade off with the # 1. Precious autograph signed by the author to his sister Marguerite: "For you, my dear sister, with my deep affection." Marguerite Blanchot, renowned organist Chalon Cathedral, remained all his life in the family home with his mother and aunt. "It will gradually become, for the family, as the memory of origins." Very close to Maurice, she regularly corresponded with the writer who reflects him great recognition for his dedication to their helpless mother. If intense affection Blanchot for his mother and his sister shines in dedications of it, we know almost nothing of their relations. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot, Christophe Bident reveals, however: "Marguerite Maurice Blanchot worshiped his brother very proud of him, (...) it attached great importance to his political ideas (...) She read a lot (.... .) They phoned corresponded. A distance, they shared the same natural authority, the same concern for discretion. " Blanchot address him indeed many books from his library, now with her continuous intellectual link. Cultivating absolute discretion, Blanchot pushed the art of erasing into his handwritten dedications generally brief and almost always written on cards attached to the rare books he offered his close friends. In contrast, in these precious items to his mother and sister, Blanchot offers in all its fragility and reveals a hitherto unknown intimacy. Nice copy with a moving source.
