        Weapons Systems and Political Stability

USA: Univ Pr of Amer. Hardcover. 081912947X 1043 pages. Bibliography. List of books and articles by the author. "Carroll Quigley, historian and teacher at Georgetown University, died January 5, 1977, leaving unfinished this manuscript upon which he had been working for the preceding twelve years. His colleagues and friends, upon reviewing the manuscript, decided to press forward with its publication. Although the manuscript is frustratingly incomplete in time sequence - it ends its narrative in the fifteenth century - it carries further toward completion the uniquely anthropological holistic analysis of history which is the theme of his earlier works... Quigley is incredibly successful in abstracting essence from reality - in analyzing mankind's experience in socializing. He describes weaponry as not an end in itself. It is part of a whole in which by far the greater part of persuasion and cooperation is accomplished by institutionalization of ideologies. This book is one of those human efforts which shapes the mind." - from Foreword by Harry J. Hogan. Moderate external wear. Some rubbing to large silver lettering upon front board. Light pencil underlining and marginal lines. Binding tight. . Good. 1983. First Edition.

Haida Monumental Art - Villages of the Queen Charlotte Islands

University of British Columbia Press, Vancouver, 1983, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, First EditionSize: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall, 218 pages. From limited edition of 1600 copies. "Concerned entirely with the Haidas of the Queen Charlotte Islands of the last century, the intricacies of the kinship patterns of the great families, and how they saw themselves as part of a fantastic, but in its own terms, logical, cosmos, and most of all how this was all expressed in their remarkable architecture with its perfectly integrated massive carved and painted embellishments, the great totem poles of the Haidas." - from Foreward. "The documentary photographs that survive are among the few remaining records which illustrate the richness and variety of Haida monumental art. Of the more than five hundred carved poles which appear in the plates, only about fifty were removed to museums for safekeeping. The remainder have perished entirely or survive at the village sites as decayed fragments overgrown with the lush vegetation of the islands." - from Preface. Light external wear and soiling to cream-coloured cloth-covered boards. No external markings. Discreet bookplate and bit of writing inside front board. Blindstamp to lower corner of title page. Bit of writing in upper left corner of title page. Remnant of card pocket inside back board. Binding tight. A quality copy of this magnificent work, Former Library Copy

Aperture Foundation 1983 - Original 1st Edition hardback of this seminal and important publication. The book appears to have suffered some damp affect (not water ingress), resulting in the inside pages, including the plates, being a bit warped i.e. they are not completely flat like paper should be. No damage to the ink, but not ideal and this is reflected in the asking price. Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] From the publisher: "A native New Yorker, Stephen Shore won critical acclaim and a one-man exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art when he was twenty-three.         A touching and poignant memento from Ronald Reagan - an ornate Christmas stocking given to a terminally ill child who lit the White House Christmas tree in 1983

[Washington, DC] "An ornate Christmas stocking, 27"" long (approx.), constructed of green velvet with cord piping, festooned with brass sleigh bells and a brass buckle. The stocking was Reagan's gift to Amy Benham, a terminally ill seven-year-old girl who had been invited to the White House to help the President light the White House Christmas Tree on December 15, 1983. Beyond some minor blemishing to the brass bells, the stocking is in excellent condition. When physicians diagnosed seven-year-old Amy Benham with Hodgkin's disease in May 1983, her parents asked her to choose three wishes. Amy requested a playhouse large enough to accommodate her and her two younger sisters, a canopy bed, and the opportunity to help President Reagan light the White House Christmas tree. She wrote a letter to the Make a Wish Foundation asking ""The Christmas tree that light up for our country must be seen all the way to heaven. I would wish so much to help President Reagan turn on those Christmas lights."" (Oregonian, Portland, Oregon, December 16, 1983, p1.) The foundation came through for Amy, and the White House invited her to attend the lighting ceremony scheduled for December 15, 1983. Amy and her mother arrived at the White House, where she was allowed to sit at the President's desk in the Oval Office. At five in the afternoon she stood with Reagan at the diplomatic entrance to the White House where the switch had been placed for the lighting. Before Amy flipped the switch, Reagan read a portion of her letter and added, ""Well Amy, the nicest Christmas present I could receive is helping your dream come true. When you press the button over here, the whole world will know Amy Benham lit up the skies sending Americans love, hope and joy all the way to heaven and making the angels sing."" Reagan then picked her up to allow her turn on the 500 lights which had been festooned on the 30-foot Colorado blue spruce that had been placed on the Ellipse near the south grounds of the White House. (Ibid.) An ebullient Amy Benham returned to her home in Washington State to find a canopy bed and a backyard playhouse all donated by local merchants and remarked: ""I've got all these wishes already, and I'm only 7 years old. I got Christmas cards from people all over the country, people we don't even know. There was even one from Santa Claus."" (Seattle Times, December 26, 1983, p. A-19.) The event was not only a highlight in Amy's short life, it was an important public relations move for Reagan who was just beginning to gear up for the upcoming election of 1984. The photo-ops helped Reagan appear more accessible and endearing to voters. His victory that fall was one of the most lopsided electoral wins in American history. The stocking is accompanied by several copies of news clippings chronicling Amy's visit to the White House, including an image of Reagan standing with Benham at the lighting ceremony. In addition, there is video footage of the tree lighting (copied to a DVD), as reported by several Seattle television stations, which include interviews with Amy and members of her family. The video, compiled on a DVD, includes reports from KOMO and KIRO in Seattle, as well as reports from the national network outlets, including Dan Rather from CBS, Tom Brokaw from NBC, and Peter Jennings at ABC. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will be contributed to the American Cancer Society."

Sets out the outline of the dispute, with extensive commentary on the Judith Hart 'Paper' and her subsequent behaviour; 'To Hart, law is irrelevant (ultimately), and the citizen is irrelevant: what matters is that everything should be 'Arranged' by a few special people---in the interests of her 'vote'. It would be hard to find attitudes more openly Chile'. Copy of a bank transfer from P.M.Heringa of Amsterdam to the bank account of Hamilton Finlay 'Towards the Victory', dated 12.Oct 83. A copy of a letter from John Stathatos on the affair published in the TLS May 6, 1983. An eight page copr of the Judith Hart paper 'Mr. Ian Hamilton Finlay and the battle of 'Little Sparta'. Copy of atwo page letter from Hamilton Finlay to Mr Baird of the Scottish Office, complaining of his attitude and lack of attention 'I assume that this is the same rubbish (of misinformation) which the Scottish Office offers to all who correspond with it on the Little Spartan War. I see that the citizen is helpless before the confederacy of ignorance, stupidity, arrogance and slackness. The ultimate licence for this confederacy, is the police, for no state based on law and reason would ever tolerate such a condition. The roads of ignorance lead to violence , and this province is very far down them. One notes that neither culture nor the cultured, appear to feel demeaned. this is their disgrace'.
