        Haida Monumental Art

Vancouver Univ of British Columbia Pr 1983. 218 pages. From limited edition of 1600 copies. "Concerned entirely with the Haidas of the Queen Charlotte Islands of the last century, the intricacies of the kinship patterns of the great families, and how they saw themselves as part of a fantastic, but in its own terms, logical, cosmos, and most of all how this was all expressed in their remarkable architecture with its perfectly integrated massive carved and painted embellishments, the great totem poles of the Haidas." - from Foreward. "The documentary photographs that survive are among the few remaining records which illustrate the richness and variety of Haida monumental art. Of the more than five hundred carved poles which appear in the plates, only about fifty were removed to museums for safekeeping. The remainder have perished entirely or survive at the village sites as decayed fragments overgrown with the lush vegetation of the islands." - from Preface. Light external wear and soiling to cream-coloured cloth-covered boards. No external markings. Discreet bookplate and bit of writing inside front board. Blindstamp to lower corner of title page. Bit of writing in upper left corner of title page. Remnant of card pocket inside back board. Binding tight. A quality copy of this magnificent work.         Flight Path

Clonemel, Tipperary, Ireland:: Coracle,, 2011.. Edition of 6. 5.25 x 6.75 x .75"; 6 pages. Accordion. Letterpress. Blue cloth covered boards. Erica Van Horn: "Flight Path came about as a continuation of my love of the concertina. The book can be seen both page-by-page and as a long panorama of activity. Since 1983, I have worked with both folded paper and casebound concertinas. In the case of Flight Path, the hand-painted pages of sky are the ground for the embossed letter-pressed airplane. The piece is a continuation from Antwerp Airport (1993, edition 35), where I used photo copy on hand-painted pages."Erica Van Horn, additionally: "My painted pages were cut to size and a block was made from my drawing. He [Simon Cutts] then had the tricky job of placing the planes as close as possible to my plans, using our little Adana press. Once they were dry, the pages were then glued down in order. I am quite thrilled with the results as I like the ephemeral nature of the paint with the solidity of the printed plane and the rigid boards."Nancy Kuhl, "Narrative and Pattern" from The Book Remembers Everything: The Work of Erica Van Horn: "In her books, Erica Van Horn often explores the elements of visual narrative and the ways those elements of visual narrative might be exploited and subverted within the linear structure of the book. In an entirely modern reinterpretation of the heavy use of patterns found in the borders and backgrounds of much Medieval art, the recurrence of visual patterns frame and shape scenes and figures, underscoring what might be thought of as plot in visual narratives. ... Van Horn's frequent use of the accordion format, which looks and functions like a book but can also be unfolded to reveal a many-paneled panorama, provides her narratives with a page-by-page pace while also calling to mind the scope and grandeur of panoramic images.

A touching and poignant memento from Ronald Reagan - an ornate Christmas stocking given to a terminally ill child who lit the White House Christmas tree in 1983

[Washington, DC] "An ornate Christmas stocking, 27"" long (approx.), constructed of green velvet with cord piping, festooned with brass sleigh bells and a brass buckle. The stocking was Reagan's gift to Amy Benham, a terminally ill seven-year-old girl who had been invited to the White House to help the President light the White House Christmas Tree on December 15, 1983. Offered together with a 7"" x 4.75"" Christmas card sent to Benham by well-wishers who saw her story on the papers. Beyond some minor blemishing to the brass bells, the stocking is in excellent condition. When physicians diagnosed seven-year-old Amy Benham with Hodgkin's disease in May 1983, her parents asked her to choose three wishes. Amy requested a playhouse large enough to accommodate her and her two younger sisters, a canopy bed, and the opportunity to help President Reagan light the White House Christmas tree. She wrote a letter to the Make a Wish Foundation asking ""The Christmas tree that light up for our country must be seen all the way to heaven. I would wish so much to help President Reagan turn on those Christmas lights."" (Oregonian, Portland, Oregon, December 16, 1983, p1.) The foundation came through for Amy, and the White House invited her to attend the lighting ceremony scheduled for December 15, 1983. Amy and her mother arrived at the White House, where she was allowed to sit at the President's desk in the Oval Office. At five in the afternoon she stood with Reagan at the diplomatic entrance to the White House where the switch had been placed for the lighting. Before Amy flipped the switch, Reagan read a portion of her letter and added, ""Well Amy, the nicest Christmas present I could receive is helping your dream come true. When you press the button over here, the whole world will know Amy Benham lit up the skies sending Americans love, hope and joy all the way to heaven and making the angels sing."" Reagan then picked her up to allow her turn on the 500 lights which had been festooned on the 30-foot Colorado blue spruce that had been placed on the Ellipse near the south grounds of the White House. (Ibid.) An ebullient Amy Benham returned to her home in Washington State to find a canopy bed and a backyard playhouse all donated by local merchants and remarked: ""I've got all these wishes already, and I'm only 7 years old. I got Christmas cards from people all over the country, people we don't even know. There was even one from Santa Claus."" (Seattle Times, December 26, 1983, p. A-19.) The event was not only a highlight in Amy's short life, it was an important public relations move for Reagan who was just beginning to gear up for the upcoming election of 1984. The photo-ops helped Reagan appear more accessible and endearing to voters. His victory that fall was one of the most lopsided electoral wins in American history. In addition, there is video footage of the tree lighting (copied to a DVD), as reported by several Seattle television stations, which include interviews with Amy and members of her family. The video, compiled on a DVD, includes reports from KOMO and KIRO in Seattle, as well as reports from the national network outlets including Dan Rather from CBS, Tom Brokaw from NBC, and Peter Jennings at ABC. The Christmas card which accompanies the stocking was penned by an Oregon couple shortly after Amy's visit to Washington, and reads in part: ""Dear Amy ?" I saw your picture in the paper and you resemble my eldest grand-daughter... What a beautiful thought you had 'for the lights to shine clear to heaven.' I'm sure Jesus thinks you are 'special' too! I decided I'd send you a card to wish you and your family a blessed Christmas. I'm remembering all of you in my daily prayers... I[']m a grandma of 65 years and just wanted to send you my love..."" The stocking is accompanied by several copies of news clippings chronicling Amy's visit to the White House, including an image of Reagan standing with Benham at the lighting ceremony. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will be contributed to the American Cancer Society."
