        Carrie Fisher; Photograph, Signed

1983. Very good. Ps. Sensational, original presentation color photograph (16" X 20") of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, in her slave costume. Boldly inscribed by Fisher, in black ink, to her psychiatrist, Dr. Arnold Klein, "For my own crazy. Who loves you darling [?] Guess again. Princess Leia. Opiates for sure." With the original hologram sticker ("Officially Licensed Star Wars Photograph") in the lower left corner. 2 dozen surface scratches, else very good. Framed. If you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you'll like. My take? Carrie's Leia is one of the 2, late 1970s, world-wide, magnetic babe fantasies (see page 19 in this catalog for the other, but, needless to say, we don't number our pages). And speaking of babes, when we do employment interviews at Biblioctopus, we give the women a bite-sized Snickers. If they take the wrapper off before eating it, we make them catalogers. If they eat it with the wrapper still on, they get hired for Security.

Telex Persan: In The Name Of Revolution ("telex Iran")

Paris, France: Contrejour(1983). First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 104 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, including the Aperture Edition, which is based on it. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Gilles Peress and Claude Nori: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Gilles Peress. His telexes are brilliantly reproduced at the bottom of the images, and give an urgency not only to the photographs but to the life of one restless photojournalist living in a foreign land from day to day. Essay by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Paris, France to the highest standards. In publisher's original inner plastic and outer paper shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its ultimate collectible format, Gilles Peress' "Telex Persan". The greatest photographic account ever produced by a Western photojournalist of the Iranian post-revolutionary situation. Peress was appalled by the one-sided and heavily propagandistic American coverage of the Iranian hostage crisis. With money from the National Endowment for the Arts, he flew to Iran on virtually a whim and photographed what he saw, experienced, and felt during a five-week period, from December 1979 through January 1980. The resulting images were lavished with praise and with a rare unanimity: "A book of brilliant visual nervousness between covers" (Cornell Capa). "I appreciate so much the visual strength of Gilles Peress' photographs. They depict an Iran so different from the one I knew through reading and my travels" (Henri Cartier-Bresson). Apart from the sheer vitality of the images, the book has become a landmark in photographic book design, and has lost none of its daring innovativeness, impeccable beauty, and palpable immediacy. There is a fluidity to Peress' images that could only have come from his intuitive genius. Peress may never have read Canetti's great book on crowds, "Crowds And Power". But his book is the closest thing photography has ever achieved to capturing groups in action. "To the crowd in its nakedness everything seems a Bastille" (Elias Canetti). An absolute "must-have" title for Gilles Peress collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by Gilles Peress. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is also magnificently titled, signed, and dated in metallic-silver pen-marker on the publisher's outer black paper wrap by the photographer: "Telex: Persan Gilles Peress 2006". The signature glows radiantly against the light. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, titled, and dated copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap (both the inner plastic and the outer paper), and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 100 plates. Gilles Peress' "Telex: Iran" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photojournalists of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GILLES PERESS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3931141365.

The First UK printing published by Hamish Hamilton in 1983. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Just a hint of the usually encountered ghosting discolouration to the boards. A ticket for the signing event accompanies this title as provenance. Accompanied by two theatre production fliers. 'The Woman in Black' is the basis of the second longest running play in the history of the West End, after 'The Mousetrap'.         Gorky Park (Original screenplay, actor Lee Marvin's leatherbound presentation copy with associated ephemera)

Eagle Associates / Orion Pictures, Los Angeles 1983 - Third Draft script (and Final Shooting script) for the 1983 film, "Gorky Park," based on the 1981 novel by Martin Cruz Smith. Actor Lee Marvin's leather-bound presentation copy from director Michael Apted and producer Howard W. Koch, Jr., bound in maroon leather, with Marvin's name in gilt at the bottom right corner of the front board, and with two notable pieces of associated ephemera: (a) a Typed Letter Signed from Apted, Koch, and producer Gene Kirkwood on production stationery for the film, reading "Dear Lee / Please accept this gift as a momento [sic] of the time we all spent together on GORKY PARK," and (b) an attractive greeting card from Apted and Koch, with a note in holograph ink referring to the shooting location for the film, which reads, "Welcome to Moscow! We're glad you're here! / Best / Howard and Michael." On the rear of the envelope is a holograph pencil notation in Marvin's hand reading, "From Howard Koch upon arrival in Finland." And accordingly, the shooting location for the film was Finland, not Moscow, as "Glasnost" had not yet taken effect. In the film, a very faithful rendering of Cruz-Smith's Cold War novel, Marvin plays a Armand Hammer-style American businessman who is playing hell with Soviet police inspector William Hurt in a mystery that is not so much a "whodunit" as a "whydunit." An underrated and appropriately bleak entry in the Cold War cinema genre by the versatile director Apted. Maroon leather with gilt titles and rule, with matching glossy endpapers. Title page present, with credits for screenwriter Potter and novelist Cruz-Smith. 133 leaves, photographically reproduced. Pages and binding about Fine. From the estate of Lee Marvin.         Selected Papers 1945-1980 with Commentary. (INSCRIBED BY YANG TO FELLOW NOBEL LAUREATE IN PHYSICS DONALD GLASER.)

San Francisco: W. H. Freeman, 1983. - First Edition. xvi, 596 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine. Inscribed: 'To Don/with fond memories/of our past/associations [see below]./Frank/March/1988'. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1957 was awarded jointly to Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao (T.D.) Lee 'for their penetrating investigation of the so-called parity laws which has led to important discoveries regarding the elementary particles'. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1960 was awarded to Donald A. Glaser 'for the invention of the bubble chamber'. Yang (1922-) and Glaser (1926-2013) are two of the 11 youngest Nobel Laureates in the sciences, winning at ages 35 and 34, respectively. 'The general intuition is that as you go to less and less biological and simpler and simpler systems, you begin to lose the ability to distinguish time going forward and time backward. And that's an endless debate having to do with evolution and cosmic and so on. But that's the simple explanation of it. So everybody assumed that if you're talking about these little submicroscopic particles, that they don't have any knowledge of time—And the other question is that there are right-handed and left-handed people, there are even right and left handed molecules. Dextrose, for example, is a right-handed sugar, and levulose is the same thing exactly, but it's a mirror image. And so it is with the amino acids. They're all left-handed in our biology, but they don't need to be. If you make them synthetically, you get what's called a racemic mixture—half are right-handed, half are left-handed. But if they come out of a biological process, they're all the same. So the notion was that as you get to simpler and simpler and less biological things, handedness also goes away. So you would think that, unlike a bowling ball, which has handedness because of the finger holes—I guess, maybe not, I'm not sure about that. But anyhow, as you get to billiard balls, then they're symmetrical, and the fantasy was that these little particles are billiard balls. They can't tell if they're getting older or not. They're not right-handed, they're not left-handed and Lee and Yang, a couple of really smart guys at Columbia, said, 'You know, it's all very well that we have that intuition, but nobody's proved it, and it may be that these guys can tell if they're right-handed or left-handed.' To make a long story short, they were right that these particles do know if they're left-handed or right-handed, and there are different kinds. . . . There was a general belief, your well-trodden path, that as you go to simpler and simpler and therefore smaller and smaller physical objects, they will have simpler and simpler personalities. And handedness is one that's gone. Then Lee and Yang said, 'Hey, it ain't necessarily so. We assume that because it sort of seems appealing, but there's no proof of it. Furthermore, it could be that it isn't true.' What do you know, these little particles, the so-called strange particles, have handedness. That's called parity violation, and that's a Nobel Prize. That was a tremendous shock. But they pointed out that here we were following everybody on the same path, and going out in the shrubs, we found an interesting thing. So there are these people who are mavericks. They're not trying to destroy anything' (Donald A. Glaser, Ph.D., The Bubble Chamber, Bioengineering, Business Consulting, and Neurobiology: An Interview Conducted by Eric Vettel in 2003-2004, Program in Bioscience and Biotechnology Studies, Regional Oral History Office, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley).
