1983. 1983. THE LAST STARFIGHTER - ORIGINAL DRAFT SCREENPLAY dated April 8, 1983. The FILM EDITOR'S COPY, with White, Yellow, Blue, Pink, and Green Pages (a "Rainbow" Draft) with pages revised on 4/18, 5/2, 5/9 and 5/23/83. THE LAST STARFIGHTER was one of the first films to make extensive use of CGI animation (Computer Generated Imagery) and has become a very INFLUENTIAL CULT FILM. Both SETH ROGEN and STEVEN SPIELBERG have been trying to acquire rights to remake the film. The screenplay is by JONATHAN BETUEL, who holds all rights. The film was Directed by Nick Castle. It stars Lance Guest, Dan O'Herlihy, and Robert Preston (the Music Man) in his final film role. ***COPY of the FILM'S EDITOR, CARROLL TIMOTHY O'MEARA, 1943-2007. His SIGNATURE "Tim OMeara" is on the front cover. His name is also written at the top of each of the first colored pages (page 2, yellow; page 4, blue; page 5 pink; page 64A, green). I am not certain if Tim O'Meara's name on the colored pages is also his signature, or if his name was written there by a film production member in order that the various revised pages be delivered directly to him. Below his name on the green page 64A is written "today", perhaps indicated that this revised page had to be immediately rushed to him. There are some handwritten marks and notations on pages 46-48 that are presumably in Tim O'Meara's hand. This script came from the estate of Timothy O'Meara.*** Blue heavy stock paper covers, printed title on the front cover, three hole punched, bound with 3 brass brads. The first page, the title page, is YELLOW. It shows various revision dates and states that the script is the property of LORIMAR and that copying and reproduction is prohibited. The inner pages are photocopied on 8.5x11" paper (photocopying was, and still is, how original copies of a shooting script were quickly produced and distributed to film producers, directors, editors and others involved in a motion picture production), pages are printed on one side only and 3-hole punched at their left margin, 130 pages plus some "A" and "B" pages (e.g. 64, 64A) plus the title page. The pages are white, yellow, blue, pink and green, with the colored pages all having a revised date printed at the top of the page. There are 30 BLUE PAGES, revised 4/18/83; 41 PINK PAGES, revised 5/2/83; 22 YELLOW PAGES, revised 5/9/83; and ONE GREEN PAGE, revised 5/23/83; the remaining pages are white. On the rear page edges (the spine) is hand-written "STARFIGHTER". VERY GOOD condition, the covers have tears around their 3 punched holes, are pulling from the brass brads, and have some creases from handling, but remain bright and solid; internally, the upper corner of the last page is torn off, not affecting text, otherwise the pages are complete, bright, clean and clear. THE LAST STARFIGHTER is an influential cult classic. Both Seth Rogen and Steven Spielberg, among others, have tried repeatedly to acquire the rights to either remake the film or make a sequel. To this point the screenwriter, Jonathan Betuel, who holds the film rights, has refused. (Google Search: Steven Spielberg "The Last Starfighter"; or Google Search: Seth Rogen "The Last Starfighter").         Mutable loci in maize. [Offered with:] Some parallels between gene control systems in maize and in bacteria.

Carnegie Institution, Washington - First edition, the very rare offprint issue, of the first of the papers documenting McClintock’s discovery of ‘control elements,’ for which she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1983. "Between 1948 and 1951, McClintock carried out a series of sophisticated experiments with variegated maize that revealed mobile genetic elements that could move from one chromosome to another. Since the mobile elements possessed the ability to alter the function of neighboring genes, McClintock called them ‘control elements.’ Because of the focus, in the 1950’s, on the discovery by Watson and Crick of the structure of DNA and its genetic implications, McClintock’s discovery of ‘jumping genes’ was not appreciated at the time. Although she had suggested that mobile genetic elements were probably present in insects and higher organisms, it was not until the mid-1960’s that mobile elements were found to play a role in the spread of antibiotic resistance from resistant to sensitive strains of bacteria. In the 1970’s, the formation of antibodies was found to be based in genetic transposition. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, it was discovered that growth-regulating genes, or oncogenes, are transposed from one chromosome to another in certain forms of cancer McClintock’s discovery of mobile genetic elements in maize has counterparts in bacteria, animals, and humans; more-over, it also helped to explain how genes can change during evolution and to elucidate a series of complicated medical problems" (Magill 3, pp. 1435-4). The second offered paper McClintock first suggested the existence of mobile genetic elements in bacteria."The maize cobs that we buy at the supermarket usually have yellow kernels. This is not always the case with wild forms of maize. In Central and South America where maize originated, one can still find primitive types of maize where the kernels are blue, brown or red. The colour depends on pigments in the surface layer of the kernel endosperm. The endosperm is the food store for the developing seedling. The synthesis of kernel pigments is controlled by the genes of the maize plant. In some cases one finds differently coloured kernels on the same cob. The explanation for this is that the cob is formed from a group of female flowers. Each of these female flowers may be fertilized independently by a pollen gram from a male flower. Maize cobs with differently coloured kernels arise when the pollen grains do not carry the same genes for endosperm pigments. All these phenomena can be explained on the basis of the laws of the inheritance stated by Gregor Mendel in 1866. What cannot be explained, however, and what puzzled plant breeders in the 1920's, was that maize kernels sometimes have numerous spots or dots, rather than being evenly coloured as would be expected. It was suspected that the dots on the kernels were due to the instability of genes involved in the pigment synthesis. These genes were believed to undergo mutations during the development of the kernel. Should such a mutation be inherited by several generations of daughter cells it would result in a differently coloured spot. This idea received further support when it was found that maize with variegated kernels also had broken chromosomes. The problem of variegation in maize was of slight importance from a practical point of view, but it fascinated Barbara McClintock because it evidently could not be explained on the basis of Mendelian genetics. "McClintock analyzed this phenomenon by studying chromosome changes and the results of crossing experiments in maize with different patterns of variegation. She was able to identify a series of genes on chromosome number 9 that determine pigmentation and other characteristics of the endosperm. She found that variegation occurred when a small piece of chromosome 9 moved from one place on the chromosome to another close to a gene coding for a pigment. The usual effect was to switch off the gene, and furthermore, [Attributes: First Edition]

In the Spirit of Crazy Horse

(n.p.): (n.p.). (1983). Matthiessen's own working copy of the samizdat edition of his controversial and suppressed book about the confrontation between American Indian activists and the FBI in the early Seventies at Pine Ridge Reservation near Wounded Knee that left two federal agents and one Indian dead, and resulted in AIM activist Leonard Peltier being imprisoned for life, convicted of the agents' murder in a case that Matthiessen describes as rife with government malfeasance. Matthiessen, his publisher, and even some bookstores who had stocked the book were the targets of lawsuits brought by two government officials who claimed they were slandered by the hard-hitting book, which made no bones about its advocacy of the Indians' case. Until a landmark Supreme Court decision upholding Matthiessen's (and Viking's) First Amendment rights nine years after the lawsuits were filed, the book was shelved with remaining copies of it being pulped; paperback publication, as well as foreign publication, were blocked for nearly a decade. This edition was pirated during the years that the book was unavailable through normal channels. This copy has dozens of Matthiessen's corrections throughout. Plain white printed wrappers, with just the title and author indicated; comb-bound in an acetate cover. The acetate has yellowed; the binding is broken; the title page and prelims have suffered insect damage in the lower outer corners. Mediocre condition, but probably, in every other respect, the best copy of this book extant. First Edition. Softcover.
