        Horsemeat

Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1982. First Edition. Hardcover. Like New. Signed by Author. One of 125 numbered copies signed by author and photographer. Color photos appear to have a glossy (not matte) finish, although not one of 15 labeled "Photographer's Copy" as per Kumhansl 76. Folio. Handbound in boards with original acetate jacket. First edition, glossy issue. Near Fine with a bit of wear to foot, light rubbing to acetate. Includes publisher's four page prospectus with photo, signed by Bukowski, lettered "B" in red; one of 26 such copies. A vivid oversize photographic and literary evocation of Bukowski's undying love for the American race track in all its scummy fickle glory.

        On the Black Hill [Signed]

London: Jonathan Cape, 1982. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine+/Fine-. First Impression. 8vo: 248,[2]pp. Publisher's slate grey cloth, spine stamped in gilt, wraparound pictorial dust jacket, by Mon Mohan, unclipped and unpriced (one of the export copies Jonathan Cape issued; priced copies include the exception, "UK only"). Signed by Chatwin (without dedication) on title page. Presented the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for 1982 and the Whitbread First Novel of the Year Award (there is debate as to whether Chatwin's The Viceroy of Ouidah, a fictionalized account of an actual eighteenth-century Brazilian slave trader, published two year before On the Black Hill, should be considered fiction or nonfiction). Near Fine or better (spine tips bumped, stray spot or two to top and fore-edges, short, thin ink line to bottom edge of front cover); About Fine jacket (lightly nicked to one flap fold). Chatwin's first novel (and third book), "written in the tradition of Thomas Hardy and D. H. Lawrence, revives the almost forgotten genre of the pastoral [as it] follows the lives of identical twins [Benjamin and Lewis Jones] whose experience provides a miniature-like perspective on twentieth-century history far from the madding crowd, wars, and disasters. . . . A stage version by Charles Way was first performed in 1986, and in 1987 director Andrew Grieve turned the taciturn pastoral into a successful film version with two Welsh actors, Mike and Robert Gwilym, as Lewis and Benjamin Jones, and hundreds of Radnorshire residents participating as extras." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

DON'T ENTERTAIN APARTHEID - SUPPORT THE CULTURAL BOYCOTT

MEDU Art Ensemble 1982 - Silkscreen. Unique. 43.5 x 60 cm. Due to the fact that Thami Mnyele and 13 other cultural workers were murdered in Gabarone , Botswana by the SADF in the early hours of 14 June 1985 in a covert cross-border raid MEDU ceased to exist from this day forward. Their archives and workshops were destroyed and/or confiscated and brought back to South Africa as examples of communist inspired "art treason". As a result very few original posters survive today, in some cases one estimates less than 5 copies. In some cases only 50 or 80 copies were printed which were all made by hand and were usually silkscreened. Illustrated "The rationalism of nationalism?" published by Warren Siebrits, Johannesburg in 2008. pg24 (colour) and is the exact poster used for the exhibition and making of the catalogue. This particular poster is so rare that it did not form part of the collection exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2009. This poster is sold together with "The rationalism of nationalism?". The poster is in very good condition. Photos on request. ONCO (Or Nearest Cash Offer). Free Shipping Worldwide. Registered Airmail. Extra Charge for Courier Service.

Verwandlungen durch Licht / Metamorphosis through Light [WITH AN ORIGINAL SILVER-GELATIN PRINT NUMBERED, HAND-CAPTIONED AND SIGNED AT VERSO]

Luca Verlag, Freren 1982 - 1/100. Folio (12 x 9 1/2"). 110, [2]pp. Original full brown cloth with white lettering to spine. Limitation page hand-numbered (No. 37/100). Book housed in its matching publisher's slipcase with b/w photographic reproduction pasted onto front cover. Completed in 1936 in Palestine, where Swiss Avant-Garde portrait photographer Helmar Lerski had immigrated in 1932, "Metamorphosis through Light" is a stunning 'tour de force' in which Lerski carried his talent to extremes. With the help of up to 16 mirrors and filters, he directed the natural light of the sun in constant new variations and refractions onto his model, the Bernese-born, at the time out-of-work draughtsman and light athlete Leo Uschatz. Thus he achieved, in a series of over 140 close-ups "hundreds of different faces, including that of a hero, a prophet, a peasant, a dying soldier, an old woman and a monk from one single original face" (Siegfried Kracauer in "Theory of Film," Oxford University Press, 1960, p. 162). According to Lerski, these pictures were intended to provide proof "that the lens does not have to be objective, that the photographer can, with the help of light, work freely, characterize freely, according to his inner face."Laid in at rear, inside a white envelope, is a splendid silver gelatin print (10 3/4 x 8 1/2") produced by German photographer Andr

        The Mists of Avalon (Inscribed)

NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1982. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo. xi(i),876,(iv)pp. Black cloth spine, dark gray paper over boards, both blocked in copper foil. A trace of sunning along the top board edge, and a touch of soil to the top and bottom text edges else this is a fine copy. The dust wrapper is not price-clipped and is also fine. Inscribed by the author in the title page: "For Patrick". The author was involved with the Society for Creative Anachronism ("SCA"). In 1968 The East Kingdom was founded in the SCA; it was started by Elfrida and Walter of Greenwalls (Marion Zimmer Bradley and her then husband Walter Breen). The Annotated History notes the following about the first Kingdom event (June 2, 1968 - AS III): "Held at the Cloisters, New York City, New York. A tourney was planned but it was rained out. Elfrida and Walter of Greenwalls were the seneschals and the autocrats..." This copy is signed on the title page, not on a plate or slip of paper pasted in. "Historical writing on a grand scale, with all the magic conviction and resonance of ballad and ancient lore." - Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 4A-48.
