        Chromo Hunt

      - Set of nine etchings extensively handcoloured, printed on Velin Arches Blanc 400gsm, edition of 4, aside from the standard edition of 25 Plate size: variable. Sheet size: 58 x 58 cm These etchings are closely related to a recent collection of paintings by Hugo Wilson that portray the most primal of all rituals, the hunt. Hunting scenes were popular with wealthy collectors in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and represented a kind of 'trophyism' and a way of displaying mastery over nature. Images of writhing animal forms with snarling teeth, some recognisable but others indistinct, portray immense physical strength but the hunter remains unseen. Hugo Wilson was born in 1982. From 2000-2004 he received classical training in fine art at the renowned Charles H. Cecil Studio in Florence, Italy. He went on to study at City and Guilds in London, where he received his MA in 2008. He lives and works in London. Wilson's work is included in Vitamin D2:New Perspectives in Drawing, Phaidon's major survey of contemporary drawing, and in 2013 was featured by the Wall Street Journal as one of six 'rising stars' in European art. Exhibitions include: IFPDA Print Fair at the Park Avenue Armory, New York; The London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy of Arts; Parafin, London; Mihai Nicodim Gallery, Los Angeles; ProjectB, Milan; Bjorn Stern Gallery, London; John Martin Gallery, London; Artissima Art Fair, Turin; Modern Museum, Hungary; Busan Biennale, Busan Metropolitan Art Mueum, South Korea; Assab One, Milan; East Wing Nine Collection, Courtauld Institute of Art, London; Flowers Gallery, London; The Embassy, 20 Hoxton Square Projects; The Age of the Marvellous at the former Holy Trinity Church, All Visual Arts, London; Terra Nihilus, Maddox Gallery, London; Arte Fiera Bologna; MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art, Debrecen, Hungary.         Three Novels

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1982. First US Omnibus edition, first printing. Not Set. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed beige boards, titles to upper board in red and white and to spine in bronze. With the dust jacket A very nice copy in the dust jacket of the omnibus edition of the author's first three novels. A presentation copy with the author's typically terse presentation inscription to the title page, "V. S. Naipaul 21 Sep 1987 for Al Murray". Naipaul recalls in A Turn in the South, "I was given the name of a writer who had been educated at Tuskegee, Al Murray. He was, or had been, a protégé of Ralph Ellison's, and he lived in New Yorkâ?¦He was a brown man, and older than I had thoughtâ?¦Al had just turned seventyâ?¦His sitting room was full of books and records. A moment's looking showed that the books were a serious collection of twentieth-century American writing in first or very early editions." Al Murray would later say, "Naipaul is like a satellite in orbit. He's got an objectivity that no one else has, and he knows that the past is an albatross." Proper inscribed, literary association copies of Naipaul's works are distinctly uncommon.

        Matrix 2

Whittington Press, Andoversford, Gloucestershire 1982 - 28.5x19.5cm, 112pp. With many tipped-in and bound-in inserts of wood engravings, type specimens, sample pages, photographs etc. Copy 182 of 410 (450) of the first edition, sewn and glued into overlapping orange card covers with an orange paper wrapper printed in black and brown with a wood-engraving printed in black, with single-sheet prospectus for Matrix 3 laid-in. Matrix, the 'Review for Printers and Bibliophiles' is the Whittington Press's magnum opus and ¿by far the finest periodical of the book arts of the twentieth century'. The astonishing richness and variety of its presentation, with the copious 'jewels' of tip-ins, inserts, specimens and much else in a profusion of different papers and typefaces ensures that reaching for a volume, whether for quick reference, deeper study or just relaxation, is always a pleasurable experience and never becomes 'dry'. Matrix 1 and 2 in their first editions are scarce as singletons, with many otherwise complete 'runs' having to fall back on their later reprints (published in 1993, in the case of M2) and suffering a considerable loss in value as a result. A copy of the true first edition of M2, as here, is thus an essential component for set-building. This copy is in much above average condition - the first six issues of Matrix, glued into thin card covers, were far more vulnerable than the later issues (in boards) to crushes and creases on the fragile edges and corners of the covers and wrappers. Near Fine (small crush and an 8mm tear to foot of wrapper, otherwise Fine). Butcher 64 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Keeping Faith: Memoirs Of A President ***Signed***

Bantam Books, New York, NY 1982 - Inscribed "Best wishes / to Sadie Rothchild / Jimmy Carter" on half title page in black ink. Book also has an inscription from a previous owner on first blank page. It says "To Sadie / Birthday Sept 9/82 / Elma & Jim" in light blue ink. Dust jacket has normal wear and price has been clipped. Jimmy Carter aspired to make Government "competent and compassionate," responsive to the American people and their expectations. His achievements were notable, but in an era of rising energy costs, mounting inflation, and continuing tensions, it was impossible for his administration to meet these high expectations. Carter, who has rarely used his full name--James Earl Carter, Jr.--was born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. Peanut farming, talk of politics, and devotion to the Baptist faith were mainstays of his upbringing. Upon graduation in 1946 from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Carter married Rosalynn Smith. The Carters have three sons, John William (Jack), James Earl III (Chip), Donnel Jeffrey (Jeff), and a daughter, Amy Lynn. After seven years' service as a naval officer, Carter returned to Plains. In 1962 he entered state politics, and eight years later he was elected Governor of Georgia. Among the new young southern governors, he attracted attention by emphasizing ecology, efficiency in government, and the removal of racial barriers. Carter announced his candidacy for President in December 1974 and began a two-year campaign that gradually gained momentum. At the Democratic Convention, he was nominated on the first ballot. He chose Senator Walter F. Mondale of Minnesota as his running mate. Carter campaigned hard against President Gerald R. Ford, debating with him three times. Carter won by 297 electoral votes to 241 for Ford. Carter worked hard to combat the continuing economic woes of inflation and unemployment. By the end of his administration, he could claim an increase of nearly eight million jobs and a decrease in the budget deficit, measured in percentage of the gross national product. Unfortunately, inflation and interest rates were at near record highs, and efforts to reduce them caused a short recession. Carter could point to a number of achievements in domestic affairs. He dealt with the energy shortage by establishing a national energy policy and by decontrolling domestic petroleum prices to stimulate production. He prompted Government efficiency through civil service reform and proceeded with deregulation of the trucking and airline industries. He sought to improve the environment. His expansion of the national park system included protection of 103 million acres of Alaskan lands. To increase human and social services, he created the Department of Education, bolstered the Social Security system, and appointed record numbers of women, blacks, and Hispanics to Government jobs. In foreign affairs, Carter set his own style. His championing of human rights was coldly received by the Soviet Union and some other nations. In the Middle East, through the Camp David agreement of 1978, he helped bring amity between Egypt and Israel. He succeeded in obtaining ratification of the Panama Canal treaties. Building upon the work of predecessors, he established full diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China and completed negotiation of the SALT II nuclear limitation treaty with the Soviet Union. There were serious setbacks, however. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan caused the suspension of plans for ratification of the SALT II pact. The seizure as hostages of the U. S. embassy staff in Iran dominated the news during the last 14 months of the administration. The consequences of Iran's holding Americans captive, together with continuing inflation at home, contributed to Carter's defeat in 1980. Even then, he continued the difficult negotiations over the hostages. Iran finally released the 52 Americans the same day Carter left office.         Signed Limited Edition Exhibition Catalog with full-page Original Artwork

New York: Tony Shafrazi Gallery, 1982. Limited. paperback. near fine. Original First Edition catalog of Keith Haring's first significant exhibition, held at the Tony Shafrazi Galleries, 1982, New York City, 9 x 9 inches, 110 pages, with day-glo pink cover printed in black, illustrated in both color and black and white, with spiral-bound stiff wrappers, published in an edition of 2,000 copies. On the front inside cover (opposite his photograph), Haring has drawn two of his large iconic copyrighted figures embracing each other, surrounding by his slash markings which indicate they are radiating good karma, inscribed "for Bambi & Roger" and signed vertically with a large bold signature: "K. Haring 82." This drawing encompasses the entire inside cover. On the opening night of this event, attended by the likes of Madonna and Andy Warhol, by invitation only, guests were presented with first edition copies of this Exhibition Catalog. It is strongly believed by many in the art world that all copies signed and inscribed with original drawings were accomplished by Haring on opening night. A near fine copy of which the cover still retains much of its brightness. American artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City culture of the 1980s by expressing concepts of birth, death, sexuality, and war.

        HUMAN BODY

Nippon Geijutsu Shuppansha, Tokyo, 1982.
