Richard Nixon inscribes and signs a copy of his memoirs, backdating the inscription to fall on St. Patrick's Day

New York, 1982. 8vo. "Book Signed, ""Richard Nixon"", with an inscription on the short title page of his volume ""The Memoirs of Richard Nixon"", (New York: Grossett & Dunlap, 1978), 1120 pages. 8vo. Bound in blue cloth, with gilt titling to covers and spine with dust jacket. Some wear to top and bottom of dust jacket, pages clean and binding tight. The volume is inscribed to Donald Carey, dated ""3-17-82"" and is accompanied by a typed letter from Carey describing the circumstances of Nixon's signing: ""On Thursday, March 8, 1982 Richard Nixon was departing on [an] Air France Concorde destined for Paris and Morocco to visit with the King of Morocco. Prior to his departure I had gotten (through Joe Kelly of Air France) permission to have his 'Memoirs ' signed by him. At 1:35 PM Mr. Nixon pulled up in his bullet-proof limousine flanked by Port Authority police and three Secret Service aides. The Secret Service man in charge of detail told Joe to present the book to Mr. Nixon for signature. Joe and I had put one of my business cards in the book, and when Mr. Nixon opened the book he said, 'Carey, that's a fine irish name. Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day, so I'll sign the book 3/17/82.' I found Mr. Nixon to be pleasant, friendly and with an unexpected sense of humor. He personally said 'hello' to all of the airline staff on the ramp and to the passengers on board. He seemed to be very nice gentlemen."""

Truly Needy 1-10 [Complete, with Poster]

Washington DC: Truly Needy, 1982. 8 1/2 x 11". First two issues xeroxed from typescript, cut-up collage, drawings and holograph on both recto and verso and Stab-stapled. Issues 3-6 offset printed and stab-stapled. Subsequent issues saddle-stapled. With a flyer for a 1984 benefit show for the zine (8 1/2 x 11", xeroxed from cut-up collage). All issues published of this dense and longrunning zine out of DC which began with the Reagan years (the zine appears to be named after a line in Reagan's inauguration speech that year, which was described in the first number). One of the best resources from the D.C. punk scene, with extensive reviews and articles on local and visiting acts, and also film reviews, and political material, and ads for local record shops. Not only limited to punk music, there is also coverage of new wave, industrial, and goth acts (there's even a rare early American interview with Sisters of Mercy in issue 8.) The sheer amount of interviews is staggering, including with Gang of Four, Alan Vega, Section 25, Jello Biafra, Psychodrama, Fear, Gun Club, Tin Huey, Urban Verbs, Velvet Monkeys, Keith Levene, Nico, Nuclear Crayons, No Trend, Government Issue, Social Suicide, Dream Syndicate, Scream, Static Distruptors, Marginal Man, The Fall, T. S. O. L, The Birthday Party, Henry Rollins, Minor Threat, Media Disease, Flipper, Hüsker Dü, Meat Puppets, Leslie Singer, Einsturzende Neubauten, Clay Allison, Nick Cave, The Minutemen, Big Black, Rites of Spring, and more. Later issues, which were more widely distributed, are not rare, but the early issues are extremely difficult. This is the only run we've handled or seen to be assembled. A fine set showing only light handling creases and some faint.

YVERNELLE: A LEGEND OF FEUDAL FRANCE ..

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1982.. Octavo, pp. [1-2] [1-4] 5-116, flyleaves at front and rear, eleven inserted plates and other illustrations in the text by J. J. Bissegger, John J. Boyle, F. S. Church, and others, title page printed in black, blue, red and gold, original decorated green cloth, front, spine and rear panels stamped in gold, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed, decorated endpapers. First edition. The author's first book, "a long narrative poem on a medieval theme, the enthusiastic effort of a boy of nineteen who had spent long childhood hours playing lead soldiers with his younger brother and who had later immersed himself in Froissart and the CHANSON DE ROLAND." - Spilller, Literary History of the United States, p. 1028. YVERNELLE was written during the author's freshman year at the University of California. His mother, who was "ever ready to encourage him, had been enthusiastic about YVERNELLE, and with his pen-and-ink sketches she had sent it to Lippincott. They accepted the poem but rejected the drawings, preferring to tickle the holiday trade with engravings and full-page pictures in color by Will Low, Church, and Deilman. Mrs. Norris advanced $400.00 towards the expense of publication. By the time the book appeared in handsome make-up, however, priced at $3.50 and $5.00 for the Christmas trade of 1891, Frank was ready to deny it as his child." [He had meanwhile found Zola and realism!] - Walker, Frank Norris. BAL 15024. Seybolt did not have a copy of this first book nor was a copy listed for sale in the the classic "First Books" and "More First Books" catalogues issued by Seven Gables bookshop in 1965 and 1972 respectively; there was a copy offered for sale in the Collectors' Bookshop "More First Books" catalogue (January 1939). Cloth a bit rubbed along the lower edges, old crease and short tear in front free endpaper repaired on verso with cellophane tape, a very good copy. Very scarce. Between 1903 and 2016 only seven copies of this book (including this one) have been offered for sale at public auction. (#156234)

Hebrew is Greek. Preface by Professor Saul Levin.

Oxford: Becket Publications. As New in As New dust jacket. 1982. First Edition. Hardback. 0728900130 . Almost as new in original unclipped dust-wrapper. Clean, bright and tight. Unused. Top edge with very slight brown spotting from storage. Presentation copy to "Gerald [Emanuel?] and Josephine with love ... " . Rather scarce. ; "The brilliant Joseph Ezekiel Yahuda, was born in Jerusalem in 1900. He was a Jewish lawyer who practiced in London, as well as a freelance author, and a teacher of linguistics of Hebrew at the Judaic school of Tangiers. He was a Jew by nationality and religion, who was well versed in the Old Testament, the ancient and modern Jewish language, half of the Koran, the ancient and modern Arabic language, and French, English and Latin. After becoming familiar with the Greek language, Yahuda learned the ancient Homeric Greek. He then decided to start research to compare the relationship between the Hebrew, Arabic and ancient Greek languages. His research took him about 30 years, as he compared the three languages from many aspects and in many ways. Finally in 1982 he published in London this 680-page book ... " In his foreword (Professor Saul) Levin accepts the proposition that Biblical Hebrew, is actually camouflaged Greek. Most copies of this book have disappeared and it is now very scarce.         If This Goes On 1-3 [Complete]

Bethesda, MD: If This Goes On, 1982. 8 1/2 x 11", xeroxed in b/w and stab-stapled. All issues published of this early DC area punk and music fanzine, co-edited by the artist Sharon Cheslow - who was a founding member of DC's first all-female punk band, Chalk Circle, which was deeply influential of the Riot Grrrrl movement, and has had a long subsequent career as an artist working with sound and other mediums - and Colin Sears, of Bloody Mannequin Orchestra. If This Goes On was distinguished for its intelligent and wide-ranging articles and reviews - some of the most informed and intelligent album reviews of any fanzine of the era, including of more obscure independent music from abroad - and striking mix of imagery - the back cover even appropriates a photograph from William Klein's Life is Good and Good for You in New York. The first issue contains interviews with Hate from Ignorance, show reviews including Iron Cross at Janelle's, DC scene news, and numerous intelligent and indepth reviews, which would be a feature of every issue, including more obscure European acts. The second issue prints interiews with Double-O, Neighbor's Children and Iron Cross. The foreward to the third issue warns that this might be the last due to lack of funds, and so it was, but it is a great issue, printing interviews with Minor Threat, Lucky Pierre, Second G, Denmarks' Sort Sol, and the Raincoats. All issues of the zine are scarce, and rare as a complete run. Slight and dissipating smell of mustiness, ownership signature of a fellow fanzine editor written neatly in red ink to the cover of each issue. Very good.

        BEN'S DREAM

Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1982. This charming children's book by Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Chris Van Allsburg (b. 1949) tells the story of a young boy who falls asleep while studying his geography textbook and dreams of his house afloat in a great flood, drifting past major monuments of the world. Van Allsburg is known for playing with perspective in his illustrations, showing us the world from a child's eye view. Our binder has picked up on this, showing us a tiny house floating beneath the large struts of a bridge. Czech binder Jarmila Jelene Sobotovà was a professor of psychology before pursuing courses in drawing and painting and studying bookbinding with Jan Sobota, her husband (see previous item). After the two left their native Czechoslovakia for Switzerland and then America, Jarmila worked for a decade in the U.S.A. in her own studio, gallery, and school of bookbinding and restoration. Her work has been shown in many individual exhibitions, and her bindings are well represented in private and public collections. The catalogue of an exhibition of the Sobotas' bindings in 1995 says of the work of Jarmila Sobotovà: "Though highly concerned with the technical aspects of bookbinding, there is strong artistic sensibility that stands out in Jarmila's work." While her work tends to be less whimsical than her husband's, it is undeniably imaginative and done with very considerable thought and skill.. 255 x 215 mm. (10 x 8 1/2"). 31 pp. Expressive modelled gray pigskin by Jarmila Sobotova, covers with a three-dimensional image (taken from an illustration in the book) showing a small house seen through the strutwork of a bridge; flat spine with gilt titling, marbled endpapers, top edge gray.         Truly Needy 1-10 [Complete, with Poster]

Truly Needy, Washington DC 1982 - 8 1/2 x 11".
