Iridology: The Science and Practice in the Healing Arts, Vol. 2

Bernard Jensen Intl, USA 1982 - 0960836063 (xxvi), 580 pages. Profusely illustrated with high-resolution color photos. Four foldout illustrations. "It is possible, through an iridology analysis, to discern the location of a problem and then, following proper nutrition, the chemical and structural changes in the body will be visually apparent in the iris. This process provides a necessary guide and method to the practitioner to help improve the patient's condition and to better monitor the patient's progress. Above all, it provides a perspective through which a correlation of all the drugless arts may be achieved, emphasizing not the treatment of a disease but the care of the patient." - from author's prefatory note. Average wear. Binding intact. Moderate quantity of markings and high-lighting to contents. A sound copy of this treasured reference. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Art of Central Asia The Stein Collection in The British Museum: Paintings from Dunhuang I, Paintings from Dunhuang II, Textiles, Sculptures and Other Arts.

Tokyo Kodansha International Ltd 1982 - "The Art of Central Asia" Fine in Publisher's Shipping Cartons [STEIN, Sir Aurel., association] WHITFIELD, Roderick, [editor]. The Art of Central Asia. The Stein Collection in The British Museum: Paintings from Dunhuang I, Paintings from Dunhuang II, Textiles, Sculptures and Other Arts. Tokyo: Published by Kodansha International Ltd in co-operation with the Trustees of the British Museum, [1982-1985]. Three large folio volumes. Limited to 550 copies. (Measures 14.75 x 10.5 in.). 344 pp. Nicely bound in publisher's white parchment over red cloth boards, gilt-stamped with an emblem on front covers and spines, yellow cloth solander cases with color printed illustration on front covers. A fine set, in the publisher's original shipping cartons. Profusely illustrated with 66 color plates, many with several extra pages color photographs of details; 113 black and white photos of art, and many figures in the text. Volume 1, Paintings from Dunhuang I is devoted to the paintings on silk, from the eighth to the end of the ninth century. This series of larger paintings, arranged in approximate chronological order, is preceded by a representative selection of the dated manuscripts in the British Library, and followed by the famous banner paintings on silk, showing scenes from the life of the Buddha or individual Bodhisattvas and guardian kings. Volume 2, Paintings from Dunhuang II continues the chronological presentation of paintings on silk, from the late ninth to the late tenth century (exceptionally, a few earlier paintings are also included). New themes such as the Bodhisattva Guide of Souls, and the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, the latter often in company with the Ten Kings of Hell, are added to the already popular Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, Succourer in Trouble, and show an increasing concern among Buddhist followers for personal salvation. But while donors themselves are more splendidly arrayed in fine costumes, this period reveals less variety in coloring and artistic skill, due to the increasing isolation of Dunhuang from metropolitan China to the late Tang and during the Five Dynasties. Volume 3, Textiles, Sculpture and Other Arts presents a selection of the most beautiful examples of textiles, wall paintings and paintings on panels, sculpture, pottery and wood carvings, grouped according to the sites where they were found. The textiles are chosen entirely from those found at Dunhuang. In view of their close association with the paintings (many of them originally were used as headpieces or borders for banners), the selection has been as comprehensive as possible. They are arranged and discussed according to technique, including embroideries, gauzes, damasks, plain and pound weaves, and printed fabrics. While the majority are small fragments, several complete items are of special interest: the great embroidery of the Buddha preaching at the Vulture Peak, covers for sutra rolls, and altar valance and a patchwork altar cloth.         Screenplay]: Nothing Lasts Forever

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Broadway Pictures, New York 1982 - Screenplay. Quarto. 70pp. Screwbound in black duplicating service wrappers with gilt lettering. Near fine with some light wear and rubbing to the wrappers. The screenplay for the unreleased cult film by Tom Schiller, an original Saturday Night Live writer responsible for many of its early taped segments, including "Java Junkie" and "Don't Look Back in Anger" (notable for an aged John Belushi as the last surviving SNL alumnus dancing on the graves of fellow cast members). This surreal film follows a young artist returning to New York, now run by the Port Authority, and his subsequent recruitment by an underground tramp community that secretly rules the world. The picture starred Zach Galligan as the artist with appearances by Dan Akroyd, Imogene Coca, Mort Sahl, Eddie Fisher, and Bill Murray in an early film role as a "menacingly-friendly" lunar bus host. According to Schiller, the film was made to get SNL producer Lorne Michaels out of an MGM development deal: "I think they thought it was low budget or something to get off the hook of their contract, but I had total freedom. No one was watching hardly and I got to make a personal film with a studio crew." The film was at first accepted for entry at Cannes but a poor test screening and the film's own quirky style, which interspersed black and white stock footage of New York with new color scenes of the underground, ultimately doomed the film's release. Aside from an appearance on late night TV in Europe, the film was not released theatrically or to home video. The film was rediscovered by audiences after Murray insisted it be included in a retrospective of his work, creating a demand for its release on DVD for which MGM has so far not responded. OCLC locates no copies.

        CROATIAN FINE ART: JAMA.

      - Zagreb: Lithographed by Globus 1982 (Text by ?GP Delo, Ljubljana) (Prints executed 1981). A rare monumental series of 41 folding colour lithographs accompanying a Croatian poem Jama (The Pit), one of the most powerful WWII lyrics, written by Ivan-Goran Kova?i? This 1982 version of illustrations was made by Croatian academic artists Edo Murtic and Zlatko Prica, the authors of the first illustrated edition, printed by a Partisan underground press during WWII. Number 82 of 200 examples, with each leaf numbered and signed by the authors. - This rare series of 41 monumental lithographies was mada in 1981 and 1982 by Croatian artists Edo Murtic (20 lithographs) and Zlatko Prica (21 lithographs), to accompany a poem Jama (The Pit), written during WWII by a Croatian poet Ivan-Goran Kova?i?, shortly before his death in 1943. The poem is considered one of the most powerful war lyrics ever written. Murtic and Prica already illustrated the famous first illustrated edition of Jama, published in 1944 by an underground Partisan press. This edition was only published in 200 examples. According to the imprint on the back of the text pages, the first 10 examples were kept by the authors, 20 examples were marked with roman numbers I-XX, and 170 examples were numbered with arabic numbers. This is example 82/170. Each lithograph of this edition is hand numbered and signed by one of the artists. Edo Murtic (1921–2005) is known as one of most active and internationally most recognized Croatian artists of the 20th century. Background of Jama - The poem Jama (The Pit) was written during WWII by a Croatian partisan Ivan Goran Kova?i?, and was first printed by a underground presses. The first illustrated edition was issued already in 1944, exactly a year before the liberation, and was accompanied with illustrations by Murtic and Prica. The author of the text, Ivan Kova?i?, with a nickname Goran, was born in Lukovdol in Croatia, on the southern Slovenian border to a Croatian father Ivan Kova?i? and Jewish mother Ruža, neé Klein. After unfinished study of Slavistics in Zagreb, he became journalist, writer and poet. In 1942 he joined the Partisans and participated in battles through the difficult terrain of Bosnia. In the months of seeing cruel battles and slaughtering of civilians, he wrote his most famous poem Jama (The Pit). This epic poem was inspired by a genocide made by the Croatian Nationalistic Army, Ustashe, upon the Serbian people.         Art Flyers]: Paintings of Power and Beauty

San Francisco 1982 - A collection of 15 flyers promoting the First International San Francisco Armory Show directed by Beat Generation and San Francisco Renaissance artist Michael Bowen. Photomechanically reproduced flyers on 8.5" x 14" sheets. Near fine with slight edgewear from hanging. Each flyer advertises the event along with a different artist on each poster with a photocopied image of one of their works. The exhibition included 50 artists and over "5000 works of art." Among the artists were Melinda Gebbie, wife of Alan Moore, a comic book artist who was famous for her collaborations with Moore on Tomorrow Stories and Lost Girls. According to her website, "she uses comix storytelling to underline cultural movements which drift like her characters." Also featured are California surrealist painter, Guy Colwell, who became known for his strong portrayal of African-Americans; Henry Sultan, a California artist and "community muralist," who exhibited his "Art of the Mandala" during this run. Sultan's artist statement according to his webpage is, "I was never a hippie, I just looked like one."The festival was the brainchild of artist Michael Bowen, an important San Francisco Renaissance artist and friend to fellow counterculture figures such as Timothy Leary, Janis Joplin, and Wallace Berman. He was the co-founder of the underground newspaper the San Francisco Oracle, and founder and organizer of the Human Be-In. Bowen saw the month long exhibits as a means to display new and established talent side-by-side in a celebration of not only California art, but the international scene: "The First International San Francisco Armory Show offers a viable alternative to this double blind situation, presenting artists whose works are imbued with feeling, color, light and vision, evoking a sense of the unknown, creating possibilities and potentialities of the emergence of the New Man."An attractive collection of images.
