Photo Archive]: Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays

[Hollywood 1982 - Archive of snapshot photographs documenting social events and activities organized by the Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays organization in the Los Angeles area, circa 1982. 51 glossy color photographs (31/2" x 5?"). Some very slight fading on a few images, else fine. Most appear to have been shot at an amateur variety show that featured live music, risque skits, performances in drag, dancing, etc. Another sequence shows traditional family picnic games like tug-of-war, volleyball, and egg rolling in a park setting. Most bear the ink stamp of Baron Studio of Hollywood, California on the verso."Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays (A/PLG) was created in 1980 to meet the needs of gay men and women of Asian and Pacific heritage and to provide a support system in their relations with their families and communities so as to understand and accept each other with caring and pride. The idea of forming an organization for gay Asians had been discussed before 1980, but an important impetus came from gay liberation pioneer Morris Kight, who then had an Asian partner. A/PLG strives to enhance identity, pride, personal growth, competence, empowerment, and leadership skills as well as inform its members of political and social issues. Other goals include building solidarity between Asian gay men and lesbians and between native Asian-Americans and those who had emigrated from other countries. The organization provides support groups, seminars, and social events for its members. In 1997, the name changed to its current form, Asian/Pacific Gays and Friends." Presumably these were taken for the group but these seem to be relatively amateurish candid snapshot images, and as such are very uncommon, and perhaps unique images.

How Anyone Can Stop Paying Income Taxes / The amazing new best-seller that exposes the fraud and deception by which the IRS extracts income taxes from uninformed Americans . . . and show you how you can put a stop to it -- Now! (SIGNED)

Freedom Books, Hamden, Connecticut 1982 - Signed "Irwin Schiff" (name only) in blue ballpoint to top of blank FFE. We knew Irwin; this signature is a good match for others in our possession. Number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2, only -- presumably the second printing. Dust jacket has a closed one-inch tear to top of rear panel. Disclaimer opposite copyright page states "There is always an element of risk in standing up for one's lawful rights in the face of an oppressive taxing authority backed by a biased judiciary. Therefore, the author and publisher disclaim any responsibility for any liability or loss incurred as a consequence of the use or application . . . of any advice or information presented herein." Whether or not it's pragmatically wise to follow his advice, Schiff's historical research into the purposely confusing federal tax code and law (the code is not "law") -- and his insistence that as per the Brushaber and Eisner Supreme Court rulings the 16th amendment did not repeal the constitutional requirement that any federal tax must be collected either as a direct tax (divided among the states and then assessed by capitation) or else an indirect excise -- is intriguing. The federal response -- that the federal income tax is "neither kind of tax" and can thus be collected by means not legal for either kind of constitutional tax -- seems to come down to "because we say so and we've got the guns and the badges." In October of 2015, Irwin Schiff died in federal prison at the age of 87, of a cancer contracted there and not optimally treated, having been jailed for exercising his First Amendment rights on this subject, without ever being allowed by the federal courts to substantially present his findings to a jury -- citing chapter and verse of their own law and the relevant Supreme Court rulings -- or to confront and cross-examine agents of the Treasury, the "IRS" or the Social Security Administration (his accusers) at length on their claims for the lawfulness and constitutionality of their current collection and enforcement regimes, since of course such a defendant can't be allowed to present a substantive defense over the course of several days, lest the courtroom be "turned into a circus" -- a week of the judge's handsomely compensated time being far more valuable than 20 years of the defendant's. (This is typical of the behavior of today's federal judges, by the way. They so limit the facts and defenses which they will "allow" defense attorneys to present -- especially the constitutionality of the "law" in question -- that the case is largely over before it begins.) 305 pp. Signed copies are uncommon. This book will not be shipped to California addresses, due to that collectivist state's absurd new statute AB-1570. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1982 - J.M. Dent 1982. 4to. Original cloth and dustwrapper; illustrated throughout with colour and b&w photos; dustwrapper a little chipped, creases to loose photographs, very good. Provenance: from the library of Dylan Thomas's daughter, Aeronwy, with a photocopied letter to that effect. First UK edition, sold with two original photographs by Rollie Mckenna of the original New York production of Under Milk Wood, with the photographer's ink stamp to the reverse of each. The two photographs, clearly taken very close together, feature the entire cast of the performance: Roy Poole, Nancy Wickwire, Dion Allen, Dylan Thomas himself, Sada Thompson and Allen F. Collins. One of the photographs is printed in the book at pp. 76-77, the other is unpublished. This was the world premiere of the play, held on 14th May 1953 at the Kaufmann Auditorium in New York, and Mckenna recounts in her book the excitement of the event. The American photographer knew Thomas well and photographed him on numerous occasions. This memoir of her complicated friend is illustrated throughout with images of the poet, his wife Caitlin, his family and friends and the Welsh landscape the shaped his poetry.       - New York: Atheneum, 1982. True first edition. A fine copy in black cloth with copper spine lettering and with photographs decorating the endpapers, in a near-fine, photographic dustwrapper with slight wear at the edges and with slight rubbing throughout. Merrill published his epic poem in three volumes from 1976 to 1980 and this single-volume complete text in 1982. It contains the Book of Ephraim, Mirabell: Books of Number and Scripts for the Pageant plus a coda. Some critics consider this the most astonishing poem ever written by an American. These poems according to Merrill by communicating with the other world through a Ouija board. It has been likened to Dante, Homer and Blake. Merrill has inscribed this copy to National Book Award-winner John Williams (author of Augustus, Stoner, Butcher's Crossing). Merrill has written on the half titile, "for John and Nancy Williams with greetings from the entire company, especially DJ and JM. Key Largo, 1990.") Merrill and his partner, David Jackson ("DJ"), performed the poem live with the title, The Changing Light at Sandover, at Radcliffe College in 1990. This copy is derived from the performance.
