      This is an original art portfolio of 40 tipped in plates limited to 300 copies; this is copy number 84. The plates are pen and ink drawings printed on yellow art paper and mounted to salmon card stock. They are presented in a green rigid pouchette with an opening top flap.This was the copy of Gershon Legman, who later wrote Blaine's biography "The Art of Mahlon Blaine"(1982). Legman and Blaine were friends, and both worked for Brussell from time to time, and both worked for Sam Roth as well. Legman wrote in ink " Published by Jacob R. Brussel" under the title plate and in pencil the title of each plate, taken from the corresponding text. A rich diptych in which the bold lines and colours compliment each other in a strong and playful manner. Signed by Morrisseau in Cree Syllabics. Norval Morrisseau was born on the Sandy Lake Reserve near Thunder Bay Ontario in 1931. He was self taught and began painting at a young age. Acknowledged for his innovations in painting that lead to the Woodland style of contemporary painting, Morrisseau was appointed a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 1970 and the Order of Canada in 1978. Morrisseau created works depicting the legends of his people, the cultural and political tensions between native Canadian and European traditions, his existential struggles, and his deep spirituality and mysticism. His style is characterized by thick black outlines and bright colors which are present in this painting. This piece is a deaccession from a prominent Canadian Institution..

Initial letters opening the Latin verses were designed by Mark Livingston and hand-colored at the press. Contains the Latin text of the medieval hymns Dies irae, Stabat mater dolorosa, Stabat mater speciosa, Veni Sancte Spiritus, Veni Creator Spiritus, Vexilla Regis, and Te Deum (all from Analecta hymnica Medii Aevi, Leipzig, 1886-1922), together with 18 translations of those hymns. & & Linnea Gentry moved her Amaranth Press from San Francisco, where she had established the it in the mid-1970&#39;s. Aside from her commission work, she published one fine book during her New Mexico years: this one. It is a masterful example of fine bookmaking celebrating sacred verse. It was featured not only in an exhibition at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fé but highlighted in Smith&#39;s &#39;Passions in Print&#39;. & & This is a fine copy of a superb example of fine printing.

Edition originale tirée à 710 exemplaires. Celui-ci l&#39;un des 250 exemplaires sur vergé de Hollande Van Gelder, après 10 exemplaires sur le même papier enrichis d&#39;un dessin et avant 500 sur offset (n° 6). Comme les 10 exemplaires de tête, le nôtre est enrichi d&#39;un beau DESSIN ORIGINAL à la mine de plomb au faux-titre (sujet : 18 x 12 cm), accompagné d&#39;un ENVOI autographe signé de Claude Parent à une certaine "Brigitte Perret", qui est en fait Brigitte Benderitter. Le livre est en outre signé par l&#39;auteur à la justification. On joint le carton d&#39;invitation illustré au vernissage de l&#39;exposition inaugurale de la galerie Archetype consacrée à Claude Parent en 1983. Brigitte Benderitter (1952-2007) fut une figure importante de l&#39;édition française. D&#39;abord libraire, elle participa en 1980 à la création de la librairie d&#39;architecture du Moniteur, dont elle créa le service de presse. C&#39;est à cette période qu&#39;elle rencontra Claude Parent, dont elle fut très proche. Elle travailla ensuite pour Flammarion et pour les édition Maeght avant d&#39;être chargée de la communication de la collection "La Pléiade" et du département des livres d&#39;art de Gallimard. A noter que le texte de Julien Gracq reproduit ("Rome") est extrait d&#39;un inédit. Bel exemplaire..
