        The BFG (Presentation copy)

London: Jonathan Cape, 1982. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A wonderful copy, inscribed by the illustrator: "To Nicola & Jonathan love Quentin Blake" and by the author: "Love Roald Dahl 1982." A rare copy, inscribed in the year of publication by both the author and illustrator. Book nearly Fine with gentle bumps at the corners and a few small stains on the rear board. In a Near Fine dust jacket that is lightly sunned on the spine and wrinkled at the spine ends and corners. In all a lovely copy of the true first edition. & & Several books would be contenders for best children's story by Roald Dahl, but this one is a personal favorite. The gentle "BFG" is a giant who plucks young Sophie from her bed at the orphanage when she spots him blowing dreams into sleeping children's bedrooms. The two of them become friends and, after enlisting the Queen of England to help, hatch a plot to stop the other nine man-eating giants from eating little English boys and girls each night. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.

55 Scheisse (55 Shits For Rosanna) Signed Artist Book

Italy: Pari & Dispari Editore, 1982. First edition. Loose Sheets. Very Good. Rare artist book by Roth. A suite of 55 loose sheets which have a double-layer of tipped on color xeroxes. The xeroxes are of polaroids taken of plates of excrement. Comes with a single xeroxed sheet with basic copyright information which has been SIGNED and dated by the artist. This copy numbered 15/16 - A and labeled as such on the elaborate folding box which contains the contents. The 55 sheets are of thick card stock. Each card has an identical drill hole near the top of the left hand corner. Hole does not affect any of the images. The holes derive directly from the artist who hanged the contents of this particular copy in a 1986 exhibition of the artist's works at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. As such, this copy can be seen as a work of installation art in and of itself as part of that exhibition. This copy either to be included in the overall grouping of books in this catalog of volumes displayed in that exhibition or can be sold independently, as is. The printed box is in good condition having borne some weight atop it at some point which has pushed in the corners. There is also an abrasion to the box at the opening. No copies found in worldwide institutions. [Dobke, Dieter Roth Graphic Works, catalogue Raisonne, pp 271]. One of only 32 copies made. This title not included in Dobke's Books + Multiples volume.

Zurich: Coron Verlag, 1982. No. 8 OF 150 SPECIAL COPIES in the deluxe binding (of 850 total copies) . Hardcover. 457 x 324 mm (18 x 12 3/4"). 136 leaves (in the facsimile volume). Two volumes (including commentary volume in German). Companion volume by Rainer Kahsnitz. No. 8 OF 150 SPECIAL COPIES in the deluxe binding (of 850 total copies). Facsimile attractively bound in the publisher's gold slubbed silk, both covers with brass corner plates featuring a stylized quatrefoil leaf, front cover with the same plate used, on the diagonal, as centerpiece, wide raised bands; FACSIMILE VOLUME HOUSED IN A STRIKING LEATHER BOX WITH cork lining and a top in which is set A CONVINCING 8 x 5" REPRODUCTION OF THE ECHTERNACH GOSPEL COVER, FEATURING THE 10TH CENTURY OTTONIAN IVORY CRUCIFIXION, AROUND WHICH IS A WIDE FRAME WITH JEWELS set in gold filigree between intricately decorated enamelled plaques; companion volume with vellum spine and rose boards depicting in 28 squares roaring lions of Medieval style. Text in 23 1/2 karat gold, more than 500 initials in colors, gold, and silver, full-page initial at the opening of each Gospel, four "carpet" openings adorned with the colors and patterns of Byzantine fabrics, and 60 miniatures illustrating Christ in Majesty with the Evangelists and the Prophets, parables told by Jesus, and scenes from the life of Christ. Prospectus with folder containing sample leaf laid in. The corners of the box showing a hint of wear, but the facsimile volume in virtually mint condition. The monks of Echternach, a community founded in Luxemburg in the late seventh century by the English missionary St. Willibrod, produced outstanding illuminated books, one of the grandest of which is this Golden Gospel, named for the golden lettering of the text. Our marvelous facsimile, which does not stint the use of gold leaf, effectively reproduces the delicate colors of the original, in which orchid pink and mint green predominate. The Gospel dates to the early 11th century (the ivory used on the cover of the original book is from a few decades earlier) and is executed in the style of illumination developed during the so-called Ottonian Renaissance of the 10th century, when the German Empire (in which Echternach was then included) was ruled by one Saxon Otto or another: Otto I (936-973), Otto II (973-983), or Otto III (983-1002). One interesting feature of these Gospel illustrations is that the influence of Byzantine Greek art is noticeable; this is due to the arrival in Germany in 972 of the 12-year-old Greek princess Theophano to marry the future Otto II. The Greek influence is particularly strong in the depictions of the evangelists, seated at their desks, surrounded with a classicizing architectural frame, and surmounted by their winged symbols. The four creatures reappear, along with four prophets at their desks, in the eight tondos surrounding the Christ in Majesty, also Greek in style. Whereas these scenes are formal and hieratic, the narrative scenes are done in a lively, vernacular style, and clearly more than one artist worked on this masterpiece. Christ is shown with long black hair, his large hands often raised in a gesture of healing and teaching, followed by disciples wearing a rainbow of garments. Our very substantial and heavy facsimile--the box and two volumes together weigh almost 40 pounds--is an extraordinary piece of work, and it represents facsimile production at its finest, especially in our strictly limited version that reproduces the late 10th century binding done in Trier, considered to be the finest book cover of the Ottonian era.

North Tawton: The Morrigu Press. NF. 1982. Limited Edition. Softcover. Sewn in grey Fabriano Del-Sarto wraps with paper label bearing titles on upper cover, internally clean and bright, number 14 of an edition of 75 copies printed at the Morrigu Press in Centaur on Fabriano Michaelangelo paper and signed by Hughes on the limitation page, with a colophon drawn by Leonard Baskin. , The Morrigu Press was founded in 1979, when Ted Hughes' sister, Olwyn, gave his son, Nicholas, her Albion hand press and a large fount of Monotype Centaur. Olwyn, who together with her brother had been publishing limited editions of his work under the Rainbow Press imprint, had bought the press in the early 1970s, planning to experiment with design ideas for books. However printing proved more complicated than expected and so she gave the press to her nephew. Nicholas had learned printing and bookbinding at school, had discovered a talent for it and so set about printing limited editions of his father's work. Ted Hughes was a talented illustrator, but The Morrigu Press publications are almost the only place where his illustrations were published. The exceptions being the Rainbow Press book, 'Earth Moon', and, as a single drawing of a bull, on or in Moortown Elegies and the trade edition of Moortown Diary. , 9.75" by 6.75", Unpaginated pp .

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1982. Folio. (64)pp. One of 150 copies signed by Jim Dine and by Andrew Hoyem, the printer. The text is set in Garamond, with the voices of God and the angels distinguished by type size. To ensure that the pages would lie flat, Andrew Hoyem himself sewed the signatures concertina-style over a flexible core of plastic and nylon fiber. The binding is quarter-inch laminated oak boards with a lightening-bolt device by Dine, backed in white alum-tawed pigskin. Mint. Prospectus laid in. One of the major artist's books of our times, drawing on a long tradition of illustrated Apocalypses, from Durer to the present. Nearly imperceptible toning to spine, else a very fine copy.

Both very good plus. Two-volume catalogue of Friedman's happenings and other Fluxus performances. The first volume includes events through 1967, the latter updates though 1983's. Higgins and Friedman collaborated on a book "The epickall quest of the Brothers Dichtung and other outrages" (Printed Editions, NY, 1978). In addition, Friedman was the general manager of Higgins' Something Else press in the 1970's. A fine association between these two key Fluxus figures. The revised 1985 edition of this title is scarce; OCLC locates 8 copies. The 1982 edition, however, is rare. We find no listing for it in OCLC, locating only a copy at Northwestern described as [1982?] but not matching the bibliographic details of this copy.
