        The Constitution of Liberty

USA: The University of Chicago Press. Hardcover. 570 pages. Upon front free endpaper is hand-written in ink "To A. Fredborg with all the best wishes. Berlin, 9 September 1982 F.A. Hayek." A National Review Panel ranked this work as the ninth best non-fiction book of the twentieth century. "A positive statement of the principles of society that in scope and breadth is more like a new Wealth of Nations... A thorough exposition of a social philosophy which ranges from ethics and anthropology through jurisprudence and the history of ideas to the economics of the modern welfare state." - from dust jacket. Arvid Fredborg was a Swedish journalist and author of "Behind The Steel Wall", a work which provided an 'insider's' view of events in Germany, and the progress of the war from 1941-43. Moderate wear to clean and unmarked book. Binding sound. Dust jacket bears short closed openings, chipping to top of spine and lacks a 1.5" piece from top of front panel.         2010: Odyssey Two

Phantasia Press, Huntington Woods, Michigan 1982 - First edition. Fine in very near fine dustwrapper in original slipcase (see below for slipcase condition). One of 650 numbered copies Signed by the author, this copy unnumbered. Additionally Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "For Ian, to cheer you up on your 50th birthday (lucky guy!) and to prove that I've not forgotten Atlanta in '52 -Affectionately, Arthur. 4 Ap '89." Clarke sent the book to Macauley from Sri Lanka, using the novel method of pasting wrapping paper over the slipcase and addressing it to Macauley, with predictable results -- the addressed paper is still attached and one end of the slipcase has been cut away, apparently when the package was opened. Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, *Islands in the Sky* (1952), and was an award-winning *New York Times* journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, *Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!* (2000). A nice association copy of this novel. Apparently the reference to 1952 in the inscription refers to Clarke's 1952 visit to Macauley in Atlanta, where he wrote the last chapter of *Childhood's End*, reportedly after discussions with Macauley. Basis for the 1984 film, written and directed by Peter Hyams, and featuring Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, and Keir Dullea (reprising his role from Stanley Kubrick's classic *2001: A Space Odyssey*).         Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 3, The Coming of War 1936 - 1939

William Heinemann Ltd., London 1982 - The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. This is the rarest, most keenly sought, and most prohibitive to acquire of the Official Biography Companion volumes. There was just a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. The third is the rarest of the three Volume V Companions. Here is the British first edition, only printing, a superlative, truly fine example in a fine dust jacket that appears unread. This is as good as they come. The red cloth binding is immaculate - clean and tight retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. The contents are pristine. There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume. No spotting. No previous ownership marks. The red topstain retains deep, entirely unfaded color. The fore and bottom edges are as clean and bright as the contents. The dust jacket is crisp, bright, and complete. The front flap price remains intact. We note absolutely no losses or tears. We detect no sunning whatsoever to the spine lettering. Searching for flaws, we note only a trivial hint of wrinkling to a tiny portion of the top edge of the rear face. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e3. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        [Screenplay]: Nothing Lasts Forever

New York: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Broadway Pictures. 1982. Screenplay. Quarto. 70pp. Screwbound in black duplicating service wrappers with gilt lettering. Near fine with some light wear and rubbing to the wrappers. The screenplay for the unreleased cult film by Tom Schiller, an original Saturday Night Live writer responsible for many of its early taped segments, including "Java Junkie" and "Don't Look Back in Anger" (notable for an aged John Belushi as the last surviving SNL alumnus dancing on the graves of fellow cast members). This surreal film follows a young artist returning to New York, now run by the Port Authority, and his subsequent recruitment by an underground tramp community that secretly rules the world. The picture starred Zach Galligan as the artist with appearances by Dan Akroyd, Imogene Coca, Mort Sahl, Eddie Fisher, and Bill Murray in an early film role as a "menacingly-friendly" lunar bus host. According to Schiller, the film was made to get SNL producer Lorne Michaels out of an MGM development deal: "I think they thought it was low budget or something to get off the hook of their contract, but I had total freedom. No one was watching hardly and I got to make a personal film with a studio crew." The film was at first accepted for entry at Cannes but a poor test screening and the film's own quirky style, which interspersed black and white stock footage of New York with new color scenes of the underground, ultimately doomed the film's release. Aside from an appearance on late night TV in Europe, the film was not released theatrically or to home video. The film was rediscovered by audiences after Murray insisted it be included in a retrospective of his work, creating a demand for its release on DVD for which MGM has so far not responded. OCLC locates no copies. .

        Mirrors / Messages / Manifestations

Aperture (1982), New York - 1/50. Square quarto. 243pp. Mottled tan cloth with spine lettered in silver in original slipcase. Profusely illustrated with 253 b/w reproductions of photographs on glossy paper by Minor White. With original 10 3/4" x 7 1/2" black and white photograph, 'Stone Steps, Notom, Utah, 1967', Estate stamp dated 1980 on verso, window-mounted on stiff board (15 3/4 x 20"), original tissue guard with printed caption, all in original portfolio of gray paper-covered boards with white folding flaps, name of artist in silver lettering on front cover. Only issues 1-25 were published with this particular photograph. All in near fine condition. "Minor White was a mystic, and Mirrors / Messages / Manifestations is a forthrightly mystical work. These qualities in themselves signify courage because there were few - even among Minor's closest associates and friends - willing to deal seriously with such intangibles. Minor's mysticism, however, was neither occult nor sentimental. It was a search for intelligence that goes beyond the ordinary dimensions of daily life. In an unpublished manuscript written in 1969, the year this book was first issued, Minor wrote: Consciousness in photography comes out of an awakening to the interlocking interconnectedness of everything, from atoms to suns, space to time, light to dark, event to situation, man to Man, and Man to God."         WAR HORSE

London: Kaye and Ward 1982 - First edition, first printing. Original illustrated boards, without dustwrapper as issued. A superb fine clean bright and tight copy with one tiny bump to the top edge. Scarce. Despite critical acclaim, and being runner-up for the 1982 Whitbread Award, the book sold poorly on first publication. It seemed destined to remain in relative obscurity until 2007, when it was adapted for the National Theatre stage, winning 2 Olivier Awards. In March 2009 the show transferred to the West End before opening on Broadway in 2011 and winning five Tony Awards. DreamWorks Studios acquired the film rights in 2009, with the Steven Spielberg directed film released in 2011. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
