        Murder Unprompted

London - Victor Gollancz, 1982. London - Victor Gollancz, 1982 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Hardbound volume in red paper covered boards with unclipped dustjacket. First edition, signed by the author. Simon Brett (born 1945) is a writer of detective fiction and also a tv and radio producer. He wasinvolved in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as many episodes of cult comedy series The Burkiss Way, I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and Just a Minute. Here is another of Simon Brett's fascinating blends of crime, detection and back-stage drama. This time he provides what might be described as the biography of a play, from the cradle to the grave - from author (schoolmaster Malcolm Harris, an innocent in the theatre) to producer (unscrupulous and up-and-coming Paul Lexington) to theatre (provinical rep at Taunton) to director (whizz-kid Peter Wickton) to cast (which includes Mr Brett's bit-player detective, Charles Paris) to West End transfer (and the addition to the cast of that star of stage and screen, the ever-charming Michael Banks). So far, so good: everyone delighted, other than those demoted by the cast changes for the West End. But now, trouble begins. Banks can't learn his lines. And than, he's shot dead on stage on the first night. Thereafter, Charles Paris has never been busier: not only is he solving the murder, but he has also taken on Banks's role, playing lead for the first time ever. In fact, playing lead helps him to solve the murder. Once again, a novel to delight all theatre buffs as well as all crime addicts. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is no wear to the extremities. The dustjacket is unclipped with no wear. Internally the pages are clean and bright. Overall the volume is in fine condition in a fine dustjacket..

Text in English and Japanese. A little rubbing to top and bottom, else near fine in like dustwrap. More images available on request. Kitajima's lamdmark work, in the vein of Weege or Klein, documents both the chaotic streetlife and underbelly of early 80s New York. His images highlight the stark juxtapositions and quiet desperation of city life and, in the tradition of the flaneur, his eye zooms in on the passing celebrity, occasional decadence, and random displays of outrageous behavior. Absolutely incredible, I have a feeling Parr put it in the photobook vol.3, well deserved too.

It served also as a legal compendium, as it contains a list of the Papal privileges granted to the convent. Furthermore, it deals with the daily schedule of the cloister's community, and we find very precise instructions on the use of the calendar, the calculation of Easter as well as a comprehensive agenda with a martyrology. The book furthermore includes a list of all abbots, provosts, monks, prioresses and nuns who died in either Marbach or Schwarzenthann, classified according to the months and framed by architectural borders. This unique work also contains a collection of sermons corresponding to the Gospel of the Day (a homily) and finally the Augustinian Rules commented by Hugo of St. Victor as well as the Consuetudines, a collection of the procedures and customs used in Marbach abbey. The work is completed with an illustrated calendar. The most important element of the Guta-Sintram Codex, however, is the lavishly embellished calendar which extends over 70 pages of the manuscript and received the most magnificent decoration. Instructive medical, pharmacological and health advice appear on banderoles, such as instructions for bloodletting or tips for healthy eating and bathing. Corresponding to the months, they recommend cures based on plants or animals, therapeutic mixtures or diverse diets. This humorous and witty monthly diet calendar provides an insight into monastic pharmacy and the medical practices of the Middle Ages * Artists / Schools: Guta von Schwarzenthann and Sintram von Marbach * Illustrations: 230 coloured miniatures (some of them full-page), numerous large and smaller scale initials * * * Facsimile Edition * Publisher / Year: Faksimile Verlag, Luzern / München - 1982 * Limited Edition: 930 copies * Volumes: Facsimile Edition: 1 volume * Commentary: 1 volume * Commentary: (French, German) by Weis, B.; Bachoffner, P.; Cames, G.; Chatillon, J.; Etaix, R.; Popin, M.; Siegwart, J.; Verheijen, R.P.L.; Parisse, M.; Will, R.; Vogel, C. * Binding: Bound in cowhide that imitates the original leather binding of the 17th century * Boxing: Solid slip case * Condition: Mint copy.

        Different Seasons ***INSCRIBED***

The Viking Press, New York 1982 - First Trade Edition, first printing, inscribed by King in the year of publication on the title page: "For Sue - / With best, / Stephen King / 11/18/82." Different Seasons is proof of King's writing genius which can transition away from his standard horror genre and still delight us with not one, but four masterpieces of fiction, three of which were adapted into movies. "Hope Springs Eternal: Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" was filmed as "The Shawshank Redemption" in 1994 (perhaps one of the best "prison" films ever made); "Summer of Corruption: Apt Pupil" was filmed in 1998 as "Apt Pupil"; "Fall from Innocence: The Body" was filmed in 1986 as "Stand by Me"; the final novella, "A Winter's Tale: The Breathing Method" was the only one not filmed due to having more supernatural elements than the other three and therefore not easily lending itself to film. *** DESCRIPTION: Navy blue paper boards with the initials "SK" in copper on lower right corner of front, navy blue cloth spine with light blue and copper lettering, cream endpapers, pictorial dust jacket with price of $16.95, author's photo on back, jacket design by R. Adelson, jacket illustration by Kinuko Y. Craft. *** CONDITION: Book is in near fine condition with a square, solid text block and strong hinges, corners are sharp, entirely free of prior owner markings; it does display minimal rubbing to the spine. Unclipped dust jacket shows some edgewear with two small, one-quarter inch tears, one at the top of the front panel and the other at the bottom of the back panel. *** CITATION: Firsts Magazine Oct. 11, number 14.       Galerie & Edition Stähli 1982 - Zürich : Galerie & Edition Stähli, 1982. (6 7/8 x 4 3/4 in, 17.5 x 12 cm). np. First edition. This copy signed by both artists in pencil on the title page. Grey linen covered thin boards (fine condition save for faint toning to front endpaper from acidic inlay no longer present) in a near fine dust jacket (light soiling). Approximately 190 pages illustrated with photographs of clay sculptures and captions (German and English) throughout. Limited to 2000 copies. From the publisher: "In this small volume, the small, very hand-made-looking clay sculptures are reproduced in low-tech black-and-white and accompanied by the amusing descriptive captions with which they were originally exhibited. As Weiss has explained, ‘The intention was to accumulate various important and unimportant events in the history of mankind, and of the planet – moments in the fields of technology, fairy tales, civilization, film, sports, commerce, education, sex, biblical history, nature and entertainment.’ The scenes they selected include Herr and Frau Einstein shortly after the conception of their son, the genius Albert, and Dr. Albert Hoffman heading home on a bike in Basel after testing the LSD that he just synthesized. Other works in the series include everyday items such as a loaf of bread, a tea set and a pot – an early example of the artists’ fascination with the ordinary. A third category portrays what the artists refer to as ‘Popular Opposites’, such as work and play, theory and practice, high and low. According to Fischli, ‘the viewer cannot simultaneously take all the sculptures or all the stories into account The title describes the opposite of what is actually the case: the confusion and the swamp and the simultaneity of these things’."
