Die Cosmographia des Claudius Ptolemaeus 1472/3

Besler and Johnson,, Zurich & New York 1982 - Superb facsimile of the Vatican's Ptolemy Cosmographia of 1472 Folio atlas (620 by 460mm), 135pp., [2] leaves, full colour facsimile reproduction of the Vatican Codex Urb. Lat. 277., full blind tooled calf with gilt centrepiece, brass centre and corner pieces, leather clasps. Superb facsimile of Ptolemy's Cosmographia, published by the Vatican. The original manuscript was commissioned by the Duke of Urbino in 1472/3, and came into the Vatican Library in 1657. In 1983 the Vatican Library published 550 facsimiles; 500 of which were meant for sale and fifty - each marked with a Roman numeral I-L - to be kept by the Library, for use as state gifts. The present copy is marked with the Roman numerals 'VII'. One such example was presented by Pope Benedict XVI to Christian Wulff, the President of Germany, during his Apostolic visit to Germany, on the 22nd September 2011. The press release that accompanied the gift gives a general history of the work:"This facsimile reproduces the manuscript containing the Latin translation of the Greek text (version "A") of the Geographia by Claudius Ptolemy (2nd century AD), performed by Iacopo Angeli da Scarperia (around 1360-1410). The title Cosmographia, which seemed the most appropriate to the author, was based on choices made by other Latin authors for similar works (the reasons why are explained in folio 2v).Together with other, similar specimens this magnificent manuscript documents the rediscovery and positive reappraisal during the Renaissance of Ptolemy's cartographic oeuvre, as a synthesis of Hellenistic culture and a recognised milestone in the representation of the earth, unique among its kind in terms of the wealth of theoretical and practical information it provides on the topic. The codex was transcribed in Florence in an elegant, humanist script by Hugues Commineau (Ugo Comminelli) de Mézières (see colophon folio 70r; in abridged form folio 122r), the same copyist of the splendid Bible of Urbino (Urb. Lat. 1-2). Pietro del Massaio and Francesco Rosselli were also involved in its production: both were well known as illuminators thanks to their workshops, which were specialised in the manufacture of maps and geographical works. The embellishment is valuable; this begins with the title page (folio 1v), which contains a sumptuously enframed reference to the title and the translator in gold on a blue background; the incipit of the translator's foreword (folio 2r) is decorated along the edges with gold and coloured borders comprised of flowers, putti with candelabras (also a recurrent motif in the initials of the text) and medallions, plus an illumination showing the translator presenting the work to Pope Alexander V (wrongly identified as Alexander III). The incipit of each book includes delightful initials painted in miniature; colourful frames embellish the introductory texts to the maps that follow. The text is divided into eight books. Book I (folios 3r-13r) explains the theoretical concept of 'geographia' and methods for designing maps; books II-VII (folios 13r-69r) contain information on the names of towns and cities, countries, regions and peoples of the world together with their coordinates; book VIII (folios 69r-70r) details the number of maps and provinces for each continent, and includes short descriptions and data on the main cities etc. These books are followed by the 27 maps traditionally ascribed to Ptolemy: the entire world as it was then known (folios 72v-73r), then 10 maps of Europe (folios 74v-92r; Germany is on folio 80r), 4 maps of Africa (92v-100r), 12 of Asia (100v-121r). Then come seven non-traditional maps or 'novae' (folios 122v-129r), and 10 city- and townscapes (folios 129v-135r). The sequence is determined by a practical cartographic criterion. The more than 8,000 locations named are entered in a grid of longitudes and latitudes, which Ptolemy is the first to use in the modern sense. The codex belonged to the library of Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino (14

West Kingston, RI and Hampton Falls, NH: Donald M Grant, 1982, 1987, 1991, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2004, 2008, 2012, 1st Edition, 1st Printing for All, All are # 433 of the Signed, Slipcased Limited Editions - -----------12 volumes for the 9 book series, hardcovers, all are Fine copies in Fine dustjackets, these look new but close, close inspection MIGHT reveal TINY marks to a jacket but honestly these are incredibly sharp copies and virtually as issued, WIZARD, CALLA and TOWER are two-volume sets as issued ( thus 12 volumes for the 9 book series ), all books have been SIGNED by KING and the artist for that volume (although WIZARD, CALLA and TOWER have book ONE of each two-volume set signed and numbered only), all are # 433 of the limited editions, so all are signed and numbered with the same # -433, all housed in Near Fine/Fine slipcases, a couple of slipcases have a wee bit of very light rubbing and a bit of fading along edges from a bit of sunning, The Wind Through the Keyhole is still in shrinkwrap and is therefore Very Fine, this is the complete GUNSLINGER / ROLAND DESCHAIN series with the first 7 books comprising the bulk of the story, ELURIA contains a story about Roland and the Man in Black which pre-dates (in story, not publication) the GUNSLINGER (about 90 pages), as well ELURIA contains an expanded version of The GUNSLINGER, KING has written about this expanded edition ---"What I did want to do was to give newcomers to the tale of the Tower (and old readers who want to refresh their memories) a clearer start and a slightly easier entry into Roland’s world. I also wanted them to have a volume that more effectively foreshadowed coming events. "---, KEYHOLE is the newest addition to the cycle having been released in 2012, you are likely never to see another set like this offered, ---apparently RON HOWARD is going to film the Gunslinger as a movie which will be followed by a major television series production, a movie project that will surely result in a new round of interest in this extremely popular book series, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Thank you for your efforts on my behalf, and for years of inspiration, Sincerely, Tom", B. B. King , Eric Clap[ton, Chet Atkins, Howard Roberts and John Entweistle all have a quote on the back of the dustjacket B.B. King (guitar, vocals; born September 16, 1925) Riley B.B. King has been called the King of the Blues and Ambassador of the Blues, and indeed he’s reigned across the decades as the genre’s most recognizable and influential artist. His half-century of success owes much to his hard work as a touring musician who consistently logged between 200 and 300 shows a year. Through it all he’s remained faithful to the blues while keeping abreast of contemporary trends and deftly incorporating other favored forms - jazz and pop, for instance - into his musical overview. Much like such colleagues and contemporaries as Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker, B.B. King managed to change with the changing times while adhering to his blues roots.         El Salvador: El Pueblo Vencera (The People's Victory). A Film by The Film Institute of Revolucionary [sic] El Salvador F.M.L.N.

S.i. [1982], N.p. - Dramatic composition depicting a host of F.M.L.N. guerrillas marching forth from Monte Alzaco, the spiritual home of Salvadoran resistance. Undated and unattributed, but presumably dating from around the time of the premiere of El Pueblo Vencera, the documentary which did a great deal to promote the rebel cause on American college campuses. Possibly a university art student's work (though if so a quite accomplished one); in any case, given the uniform dimensions in inches we assume the poster was produced in the U.S. and not Latin America (despite the Spanish misspelling of "revolutionary." Original silkscreened poster in three colors; 30" x 20" (ca 77cm x 56cm). Printed in red, blue and black inks on heavy art paper. Considerable bleed-through of colors to verso; impression slightly uneven along upper margin; a few small spots of soil -- still a bright, clean example, Near Fine. Unbacked.

Ham On Rye (Advance Review Copy, Signed)

Santa Barbara, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1982. First edition. Paperback. Very good or better in wraps; adhesive bleed-through to the publication notice on front; 'Advance Copy" stamp to front free endpaper. Signed by Bukowski on the title page. As indicated on the colophon, this copy from the trade edition published in wraps. An attractive example in an exceedingly scarce format; Black Sparrow as a rule was parsimonious in their distribution of review and advance copies, and if there were more than a handful of this particular title in this particular form, it would be a surprise. Certainly the scarcest example in the hierarchy of signed copies; it's not unreasonable to assume while there are 350 signed and numbered copies, plus the 136 lettered and signed, there may be a few signed review copies in the marketplace, but certainly not more than a handful.

The Virgin Method Letter (Vol 1, No.1 and Vol. 1, No. 2) 1982

Kassandra (P.Q. Wall), Denver, CO, U.S.A. 1982 - No Binding, stapled loose pages, ORIGINAL newsletters by P.Q. Wall from 1982. Vol. 1, No. 1 is 8 pages, Vol. 1. No. 2 is 7 pages. Book Condition: Very Good, these are ORIGINAL newsletters published by P.Q. Wall in Jan. 8, 1982 and Jan. 18, 1982. The production quality from Wall is fair, it's apparent that Wall did some sloppy production of these pieces, but his content is completely original. The scope of P.Q. Wall's cycle theories are vast and complex. His cycle theories applied to the markets entail a great deal of cycles overlapping at different time periods. These letters were originally sent by Wall to Dr. Jerome Baumring (owner of the Investment Centre Bookstore in Los Angeles). These were part of Baumrings Collection of rare Wall titles and articles. Here is an excerpt from the Introduction: Our dream is to write the best market letter in the world. To. do this we would have to have advanced insight into economic cycle-rhythms for long range overview, a VIRGIN cycle theory. We would also have to have an original or VIRGIN way of measuring the current "cutting edge." of the market daily. We need both these things, and they will constitute the two main portions of each letter. We will begin each letter with random comments under the reading, "High P.Q. Technician," explained below. One last word on "cutting edge." This involves identifying the "fateful eighty virgins," eight culled (not inclusive or even representative) group averages that constitute the segments of the current cutting edge. For example, three years ago gambling stocks would have been one such segment. We use four criteria, 1. V = Volatility, 2. IR = Intermediate-Term Responsive, 3. GI = Group Inherent, 4. N = Norm Self-Orbiting (orbiting its own independent center of gravity.) -- end. EXTREMELY SCARCE CONTENT, Highly Collectible. [Attributes: First Edition]

Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting

Very Fine. 1st Edition. Text in German. Here is the granddaddy of all Marilyn Monroe books. This book has 2568 photographs taken six weeks prior to Marilyn Monroe's tragic death. It was one of only 2,000 copies published in  Germany in 1982 - NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH the American Edition or later German printings.  It is a huge book - 11.5 X 13 and weighs eight pounds. We are offering the slipcase, book and two page publication event brochure. Book and Dust jacket are pristine except for small crinkle to foot of spine. Otherwise tight, square and clean. No writing, no marks and not remaindered. Slipcase shows wear and crinkling, primarily at the bottom of the spine (see photo). Two-page brochure is a little faded with age but otherwise fine. I doubt you will find a nicer offering of this rare classic.

Geoffrey J. Roper, historian, scholar, past head of the Islamic Bibliography Unit at Cambridge University Library, 1982-2003, and Editor of Index Islamicus and of the World Survey of Islamic Manuscripts, notes: "I have not been able to find any bibliographical record of this booklet, but the type-face is certainly that of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) press in Beirut. These types were supplied to other presses in the area at various times, but in view of the content of this item, it seems most likely to have been printed by the ABCFM." [Attributes: Soft Cover]
