Mexico City: Fomento cultural Banamex, 1982. Folio. Uniformly bound in half morocco over silk covered boards, spine gilt and blindstamped, gilt leather labels, t.e.g. Very fine. Each volume in its own slipcase. Sahagun's HÍSTORIA GENERAL... is one of the cornerstone works of research pertaining to the early history of the western hemisphere, and has been described as "beyond question the most important, as it is the most authentic history of events, transpiring in the New World, before its discovery by history was ever conceived, or brought forth with more labor" - Thomas W. Field. Sahagun devoted over thirty-five years to its compilation, and this edition is based directly upon his definitive text, referred to generally as the Florentine Codex. This scholarly edition of Sahagun's HÍSTORIA GENERAL..., with an introduction and scholarly apparatus by Alfredo Lopez Austin and Josefina Garcia Quintana, was commissioned by Banamex as a presentation gift to their best customers. The edition consists of 500 copies printed on 100% rag paper made and watermarked especially for this project by Monadnock Paper Mills, with letterpress by The Press of A. Colish, and color facsimiles by Eureka Offset. The beautiful binding of half brown morocco with raised bands, gilt labels, and crimson watered silk was executed by Harcourt Bindery of Boston. Additionally, ornaments and capitals were designed specifically for this edition by Patrick Kennedy, and in many cases were individually handcolored. In all regards, this is an exceptionally lavish, beautiful, and historically important work, and unquestionably one of the major events in American book production of the last few years. Unfortunately, due to political circumstances, the project is little known outside the circle of those involved in its production and those few people who have had the opportunity to examine a set. Virtually the entire edition was shipped to Mexico City shortly before the nationalization of the Mexican banks, and relegated to the uncertain limbo of a Banamex warehouse.

The Ethics of Liberty (SIGNED TO COLIN HUNTER)

Humanities Press, Atlantic Highlands, N.J. 1982 - "First published in the United States of America in 1982 by Humanities Press, Inc." Will close its own text block. Modest rub to corners. No dust jacket -- apparently issued without jacket. Dated March 1982 -- the year of publication -- warmly inscribed to Colin Hunter, "a dedicated and intelligent libertarian," and signed to the free front endpaper "Murray Rothbard." Hunter, who was active with Rothbard and Bill Evers on the Central Committee of the Libertarian Party Radical Caucus from about 1978-1983, financed Eric Garris & Justin Raimondo in the launch of their Web venture Antiwar-(dot)-com in 1995, and subsequently co-founded the Silicon Valley microprocessor start-up Transmeta, which took in a reported $273 million with its IPO in the year 2000. Rothbard (1926-1995) was the S.J. Hall Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, from 1986. He developed and extended the Austrian economics of Ludwig von Mises, in whose seminar he was a main participant for many years. He established himself as the principal Austrian theorist in the latter half of the twentieth century, applying Austrian analysis to such historical topics as the Great Depression and the history of American banking. Following on Mises' demonstration that a society without private property degenerates into economic chaos, Rothbard here shows that every interference with property represents a violent and unethical invasion that diminishes liberty and prosperity. First published in 1982, The Ethics of Liberty is "a masterpiece of argumentation, and shockingly radical in its conclusions," note the editors at the Mises Institute. "Rothbard says that the very existence of the state -- the entity with a monopoly privilege to invade private property -- is contrary to the ethics of liberty. A society without a state is not only viable; it is the only one consistent with natural rights." In "one area he maintained that Mises was mistaken," writes biographer David Gordon. "Mises contended that ethical judgments were subjective: ultimate ends are not subject to rational assessment. Rothbard dissented, maintaining that an objective ethics could be founded on the requirements of human nature. His approach, based on his study of Aristotelian and Thomist philosophy, is presented in 'The Ethics of Liberty' ' . . . in which Rothbard concludes "Taxation is theft, purely and simply even though it is theft on a grand and colossal scale which no acknowledged criminals could hope to match. . . . " Rothbard associate Hans-Hermann Hoppe, who wrote the introduction to later editions, described "The Ethics of Liberty" as Rothbard's second magnum opus, after "Man, Economy, and State" (1962). 268 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Black Air

New York, NY 2105 - Artist's book, one of 10 copies, all on Fabriano Tiepolo paper, each copy hand-numbered and signed by the artist on the colophon. Page size: 11-3/4 x 8-3/4 inches; 20pp. Bound: loose as issued in ink-blue paper wrappers with title blind stamped on black label on front of wrapper, housed in custom-made blue cloth over boards clamshell box by Claudia Cohen with title and author / artist stamped in black on grey paper, box lined with blue paper. Sarah Plimpton's verse is set in Caslon 540 and printed by the author / artist at Manhattan Graphics Center and The Grenfell Press. The book contains aquatints by Sarah Plimpton on every page - these accomplished by Peter Pettengill. Sarah Plimpton's moving lines and powerful, sculptural images enfolding the verse are in remembrance of her friend, the poet and novelist, publisher of The Paris Review from 1982-1992, Deborah Pease (1943-2014). The poems, while not specifically about death, certainly evoke a sense of loss as well as the bleakness of winter weather. Describing the inevitability of the human condition in terms of nature is a reminder to the reader of the natural course of events: ".remember if you can / a hand on the door / is ready to go." The verse conveys such a simple image and, yet, it is so very powerful. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Nicolas Thomas Bernhard (* 9. Februar 1931 in Heerlen/Niederlande - + 12. The Art of Edmund Caldwell II

Mazoe Rhodesia: Frank Read Press, 1982. First Limited to 250 Copies. Half Leather. Near Fine. 218 pp. Elephant folio. A completely handmade book. Copy #9 of only 250. All presubscribed prior to publication. Following the enthusiastic reception and mountains of compliments garnered by the first tribute to Caldwell, Frank Read Press did a second book, this on the artist's work in general. There are fabulous illustrations of African game (his watercolors are world renowned), references, notes, information on his studio, a bibliography of notes and references and a zoologist's appraisal of Caldwell's work. There are 44 full page colored plates of Caldwell's work each with a matching page of text. The quality of workmanship and materials has rarely been matched in bookmaking. Clearly this was a long labor of love for the Reeds and they made sure it would be a book that will long be remembered. Another fitting tribute to Caldwell's work. This copy has obviously neither been read nor changed hands often because it is in near fine condition in original red cloth over linin. Substantial additional postage.

Catalog text by Robert Pincus-Witten, Jeffrey Deitch, and David Shapiro; design by Dan Friedman. Published by the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York City, Fall 1982. FIRST PRINTING, with the statement "Edition limited to 2000 copies" on the copyright page. Softcovers, spiral bound, square format, 9x9 inches, 110 pages plus 32 unnumbered pages at the rear. Illustrated with color and b&w plates throughout. VERY GOOD condition: The front cover has some wear to its corner tips, a small pea-size scrape, and a very faint cup ring (the ring is faintly visible on the actual cover but does not show up in the photos); the rear cover has a light crease to its upper corner, wear to its corner tips, some thin scratches, and some soiling; the spirals are in great shape; overall the covers are very bright and solid, with brilliant art on the front cover. Internally, there is a previous owner's name at the top of the inside rear cover (Leslie Selcow, a San Francisco Art Collector and a docent at the SFMOMA); there is some neat underlining of text on 5 pages (4 of the pages have 4 or less lines underlined, 1 page has multiple lines underlined, a couple check marks and a couple brackets); otherwise the inner pages are fine, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, very presentable copy of this RARE art exhibition monograph. Long before there was BANKSY there was HARING. This catalog, of his first one man show, is IMPORTANT in the history of art. About KEITH HARING (from Wikipedia): ******Keith Allen Haring (May 4, 1958 - February 16, 1990) was an American artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s by expressing concepts of birth, death, sexuality, and war. Haring's work was often heavily political and his imagery has become a widely recognized visual language of the 20th century. HARING had his FIRST EXCLUSIVE EXHIBITION in the TONY SHAFRAZI GALLERY in 1982.****** Very Good
