        Christopher Pratt

Quintus Press, Toronto 1981 - 43 p. + plates. Edition limited to 279 signed copies. Signed screenprint Hawke Bay is from an edition of 93 of which this is no. 52. Screenprint loosely laid in, 15 b&w figures, self portrait, and 81 tipped-in colour and b&w plates. 4 colour prints in separate folder. Brown leather spine with beige cloth boards. Separate cloth and paper covered folder for prints. In brown leather and cloth slipcase. Signed by Artist and Essayist. When Christopher Pratt first entered Mount Allison University in 1953 it was in pre-medicine. But after being encouraged to paint by Lawren Harris and Alex Colville, Pratt turned his attention to fine arts. Summer work as a construction surveyor at the American Naval Base at Argentia explains the precise measuring found in his paintings. In 1961, Pratt accepted the position of curator at the newly opened Memorial University Art Gallery in St. John's. He remained at the gallery for two and a half years before deciding to concentrate on his painting full-time. The result has been a prolific number of iconic clapboard houses and boats on the seashore as well as more unsettling images like building demolitions and bleak landscapes. Though some of his images supply a feeling of calm, others seem to convey the sharp, northeast winds of his native Newfoundland. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

E. Hughes with the original transmittal envelope. Expected folds, else very fine condition. The letter reads in full: ""We would both like to thank you very much indeed for your most kind contribution to the wedding present which the Duchy has given us. We really are delighted with the mahogany library table which will look splendid in our home at Highgrove and is exactly the right period for the house. We were also most touched to receive the balance of the gift in the form of a cheque with which we shall probably buy some more furniture. As you can well imagine, with two houses to equip from scratch we have quite a difficult task ahead of us! We have been completely overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity which so many people have shown to us, but as you will know we have a very special affection for the Duchy and all those who live and work in it and we therefore particularly appreciate your gift. We look forward very much to visiting the Duchy together in the future.''The fabled royal wedding took place at St. Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981, before an invited congregation of 3,500 and an estimated worldwide television audience of 750 million. A highly desirable and personal souvenir of one of the most storied public marriages in modern history."

Self Published, Tokyo 1981 - 4to, Unpaginated (ca 80pp). Stamped boards in slipcase. Numerous Colour plates. Text in Japanese. Self published in an edition of 500 copies. More images available on request. Shot from April 1978 to October 1980 in Yokahama, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ueno, Shimokitazawa and Ginza. Gocho suffered from caries of the thoracic vertebrae, a degenerative bone disease that meant he was only around 4ft high. The disease killed him in 1983 at the age of 36, just two years after this, his final book was published. During his time his work was highly celebrated, and his influence can be seen in the work of Llorca di Corcia and some would argue, the later work of Keizo Kitajima. Cited in The History of Japanese Photography where the work is described- ÔAs if the artist had a premonition of his death, the photographs seem to be looking toward us from some far-off place; issuing an enigmatic appeal, they continue to await our unraveling todayÕ.       - [1] (title), 2-59 pp. Folio (304 x 220 mm.). Full dark orange leather with titling and decorative devices stamped in gilt to upper and "Sammlung Dr. Heinz-Georg v. Kamler, Wien" stamped in gilt to lower board. Notated in pencil on 12-stave music manuscript paper. With an autograph presentation from the composer to Dr. Heinz-Georg and Michaela von Kamler to title, signed and dated Vienna, November 9, 1981. Together with:Two autograph letters from the composer to the von Kamlers providing a description of the work, a performance of it, and news of the players (suggesting that the von Kamlers may have actually have commissioned the work) and copies of the published score and parts issued by Doblinger in 1990. Kont studied composition with Lechthaler, Polnauer, Swarowsky and Krips in Vienna and later with Milhaud, Messiaen and Honegger in Paris. The present work was inspired by the folk music Kont heard while serving as a soldier in Croatia in World War II. "Progressive pioneer who. startled musically insecure post-war Austria, or a traditionalist who is sometimes labelled a "Conservative"? - More contradictory verdicts have been applied to hardly any other composer in recent Austria's music scene than to Paul Kont. The notion of the "avant-gardist" ha[d] become manifest already in the first years after the war, when Kont - unlike many of his contemporaries - did not so much follow tendencies originating in Hindemith (and, to a lesser degree, in Webern and Schoenberg), but developed a polytonal style deriving from piano improvisation - resulting in the so-called phase of "captured improvisation". The course of his later studies in the years following 1947 resulted in the evolution of the "complex technique", in which. individual parts are treated independently and are joined together in complexes of exclusively metrical and tonal consolidation. His studies of dodecaphony from the year 1951 onwards led to an alternative concept to serialism: the employment of "statistic values". In this technique, it is of paramount importance that the distribution of pitches and other parameters result in a harmonically feasible. [whole], within the bounds of which free development is possible. Kont's most important innovation is the development of the "third tonality" (also called "new" or "wide" tonality) in the years following 1963." ". In Kont's "third tonality" functional harmony is abolished, and the diatonic and pure-interval voice-leading of the separate parts leads to a sometimes widely branching writing, which, in polyphony, often brings about surreal harmonies. [This]. theory, as formulated in his book, Antianorganikum, finds its most strident application in the Weinheber oratorio, Vom Manne und vom Weibe (" Of Man and of Woman", 1964). Parallel to these innovative concepts, Kont worked - most notably in his Lieder, which were melodically sketched during the war and worked out until 1977 - with a "method of metrical motives", in which motives, melody and form are derived from the metre, verse and stanza of the text. Kont's late work forms an applied synthesis of these various innovations." Christian Heindl, translated by Nicolas Radulescu, in Paul Kont: Music Published by Doblinger, pp. 4-5.The von Kammlers were also the dedicatees of Gottfried von Einem's 4th String Quartet, op. 63.         Rock Rodondo. Sketches Third & Fourth of "The Encantadas"

Bremen, Maine and New York: Red Angel Press, 1981. Signed, Limited Edition, one of 100 copies, all on Fabriano paper, each signed on and numbered by the artist/printer on the colophon. Page size: 12 x 12-1/4 inches. 26 pp; plus triple-page wood engraving. Bound: beige linen cloth that has been printed in very pale blue and gray at the out third front and back panels, title stamped in black on spine. Front pastedown is an original paper mache sculpture of grayish-tan handmade paper of the "Rock Rodondo" with the Frigate-bird, according to Melville, the " of-war hawk...[that] makes his first land at Rodondo", flying towards it. The back pastedown has a tan fold over with wood engraving of Frigate-birds in flight, protecting a triple-page fold-up wood engraving printed on ivory Japanese paper of the "Rock Redondo," with the aquatic birds that inhabit it. The back flyleaf contains an "Artist's Note" with a key to the birds pictured on the "tower." The binding is the result of the collaboration between Ron Keller of Red Angel Press and Philip Warner who designed and screen-printed the image on the covers. Mr. Warner, who lives and works in New York City, teaches at the Parsons School of Design; and his work, on textiles and papers has been exhibited in numerous one-man and group shows throughout the country. This is an elaborate and unique presentation of Melville's text. Hand-set and printed in Bembo, the text is handsomely set off by Keller's graceful birds. The title page also features the Frigate-bird in flight; these are blind stamped. An elegant presentation, an homage to Melville. Out of print for several years, it is available only on the secondary market.

Something Wicked This Way Comes (Original screenplay for the 1983 film)

Burbank, CA: Walt Disney Pictures, 1981. Revised script for the 1983 film. Written for the screen by Ray Bradbury, based on his 1962 novel. After a carnival comes to Green Town, the good citizens are compelled to follow their deepest desires, caught under the spell of the malevolent Mr. Dark (Jonathan Pryce) who can grant those desires on one condition: that the grantees will forever join his freak show. In 1977, Bradbury sold the film rights to his novel to Paramount. He and director Jack Clayton, whom Bradbury had previously worked with on Moby Dick, produced a completed script. However, production never began and the film was eventually put into turnaround. At the time Walt Disney Pictures was concentrating on films with more mature themes in an attempt to break free from their stereotype as an animation and family film studio. After the success of darker children's fantasy pictures by competing studios, such as Time Bandits and The Dark Crystal, Disney decided to purchase the adaptation's rights and hired Bradbury to produce a new script from scratch. .Set in Greentown, Illinois, but shot on location in Morrisville and Waterville, Vermont. Gray titled wrappers, noted as Revised on the front wrapper, marked production No. 0233, dated 8/24/81, with credits for novelist and screenwriter Bradbury. Title page wit integral with the first page of the text, dated 8/24/81. 127 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with blue revision pages throughout, dated 9/30/81. Pages about Fine, wrapper Near Fine bound internally with three gold brads. Weldon (1996), p. 519.
