[Ford, Ruth] Higgins, Colin (playwright)
Draft script for the 1980 stage version of "Harold and Maude," adapted by Colin Higgins from his 1971 novel and screenplay. Actress Ruth Ford's copy, effusively inscribed to her on the title page by Higgins, actress Janet Gaynor (who played Maude, 23 years after her last film appearance), Keith McDermott (who played Harold), and director Robert Lewis. The film version of "Harold and Maude" was one of the cult classics of early 1970s cinema, directed by Hal Ashby and with unforgettable performances by Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort. This later theatrical version opened on Broadway with a tremendous cast, but did not meet with the same success--it closed after 21 previews and 4 performances. Blue vinyl wrappers with rubbed gilt titles. Title page present, with credits for Higgins and producers Frank Milton and Max Weitzenhoffer, with no date. Pages Fine, wrapper Near Fine. An interesting piece of literary and theatre history, and a wonderful collection of inscriptions to an important American actress. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

GARDNER, John (1926-2007)
[London]: 1980. Carbon typescript with holograph corrections, 411 pages, 4to (280 x 215 mm; 11 x 81/2 in.), a thorough revision of the draft manuscript apparently prepared at the final stages of pre-publication. Gardner has annotated some 215 pages, including the changing or removal of text, insertion or changing of words. Of these, 62 pages contain more extensive revisions, ranging from the insertion of a single sentence to an entire paragraph, in one of two pens (blue and black). Other minor editorial marks are found throughout the typescript. Some occasional handling wear. Item #401465 A working draft for Gardner's third novel in his series about Big Herbie Kruger, the anti-hero British spy. Published in 1984, The Quiet Dogs finds Kruger washed up and regarded with suspicion by his MI6 director and colleagues. He is given the Quixotic mission of extracting a long-term asset in Moscow without leaving London, and finds the opportunity to vanquish the KGB officer who almost destroyed him four years earlier in The Garden of Weapons. Several sections are heavily excised, reworked and written in manuscript, and the typescript contains at end 52 sheets separately typed for insertions at various places. An additional 15 pages of xeroxed typed notes are found, in which Gardner includes editorial issues that need addressing. His header on these sheets perhaps implies that the irregular pagination of the present typescript was a final submission to the publisher for collation with a previous draft: "Please note. All page number [sic] - other than those marked 'new pages' - are in o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Minneapolis: (1980-81). Five holograph setlists over seven leaves, from 11" x 8.5" to 22" x 8.5". All penned or penciled to versos of various Minneapolis music flyers. Two in Bob Mould's hand, remainder possibly in second hand (either Hart or Norton), but likely Mould's as well. Generally very good with expected folds, creasing, and wear. One setlist on oversized flyer (1/12/81) cleanly split down middle between sets one and two, likely at time of composition. This setlist also shows mild running to some of the ink (sweat?), not effecting legibility. Another (12/30/80) includes only second set ("2" prominently noted and circled at top). All lists additionally penciled by original collector, who noted locations and dates of each gig in a tiny, unobtrusive hand. Dates included: 11/22/80 (at 7th St. Entry, on verso of undated Sam's promo flyer), 12/13/80 (7th St. Entry, second set only, on verso of different undated Sam's promo flyer), 1/12/81 (7th St. Entry, on verso of Sam's flyer advertising Jan. 22nd, 1981 show by Nona Hendrix and Zero Cool), 2/3/81 (7th St. Entry, on verso of January 1981 calendar from same, which lists the 1/12 show above, as well as two shows by the Replacements), and 8/27/81 (7th St. Entry, on versos of two different Sam's flyers - one a Sept. 1981 calendar listing shows from Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, and the db's, the second for a Sept. 17th Screaming Urge gig). Collection of early setlists from seminal band Hüsker Dü for shows in their hometown of Minneapolis, all predating the release of their debut album LAND SPEED RECORD, and all but one predat … [Click Below for Full Description]

1980. INSURED MEDIA MAIL SHIPPING IN A BOX MARILYNNE ROBINSON HOUSEKEEPING PAPERBOUND ADVANCE REVIEW COPY (PRECEDING HARDBOUND FIRST PRINTING) FSG (1980) Housekeeping is a novel by Marilynne Robinson, published in 1980. The novel was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (which Robinson would eventually win for her second novel, Gilead), and awarded the PEN/Hemingway Award for best first novel. In 2003, the Guardian Unlimited named Housekeeping one of the 100 greatest novels of all time, describing the book as "Haunting, poetic story, drowned in water and light, about three generations of women." Time magazine also included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. Ruthie narrates the story of how she and her younger sister Lucille are raised by a succession of relatives in the fictional town of Fingerbone, Idaho (some details are similar to Robinson's hometown, Sandpoint, Idaho). Eventually their aunt Sylvie (who has been living as a transient) comes to take care of them. At first the three are a close knit group, but as Lucille grows up she comes to dislike their eccentric lifestyle and moves out. When Ruthie's well-being is questioned by the courts, Sylvie returns to life on the road and takes Ruthie with her. The novel treats the subject of housekeeping, not only in the domestic sense of cleaning, but in the larger sense of keeping a spiritual home for one's self and family in the face of loss, for the girls experience a series of abandonments as they come of age. The events take place in an uncertain time, in that no dates are me … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Seven Sha), 1980. First Edition. Wraps. 4to. Black printed wraps in photographic dust jacket. In original red obi. Light shelfwear to jacket edges, mild scuffing to spine ends and corners. Interior unmarked. Very good plus or better. Very good + / very good +. Classic photobook featuring 78 black and white photographs taken surreptitiously in Shinjuku and Yoyoki parks in Tokyo, both notorious for semi-public sexual activities. Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II, as an example of a "'soft-core' pornographic photobook" that goes beyond its obvious function to offer "oblique but fascinating insights into Japanese society;" Yoshiyuki used an infared flash to photograph both participants and other observers without alerting them. Said by Parr & Badger to "generate a whole slew of questions concerning voyeurism, privacy and stalking [...] a brilliant piece of social documentation, catching perfectly the loneliness, sadness and desperation that so often accompany sexual or human relationships in a big, hard metropolis like Tokyo." Followed by an interview with the photographer by Nobuyoshi Araki. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Lois and Michael K. Torf, New York/Boston, 1980. Unpaged. Approximately 135 pages. First edition, first printing. Softcover. With the photo illustrated dust jacket. Square format bound in printed white stiff paper covers and wrapped in an illustrated stiff paper dust jacket. 372 black and white illustrations. Included in Parr & Badger Volume II. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Hundreds of black and white snapshot photographs, presumably of things in and around the artist's studio, arranged consistently in a grid of nine images to a page, create a comprehensive image without need of text of any sort, of the man, the artist, and his world. Fascinating look into the private life of one of the pioneers of minimal and conceptual art. "From about 1975 LeWitt also made books employing photographic images to construct systems... [His] most discussed book in this mode is Autobiography of 1980, in which he surveys and inventorizes every nook and cranny of his Manhattan loft. The 128 pages comprise 1116 photographs using his regular 3 x 3 grid layout. HOLMSTROM, John et al.
[New York]: 1980. Pen, pencil and colored ink on paper. Various sizes. Occasional marginal creases, "Kink Shop" has had one panel replaced. Overall near fine. Includes three example of "Detective Noodles," three of "Bosko," and on of "One Day at the Kink Shop." Near fine. At the time he helped launch PUNK in 1975, John Holmstrom was studying cartooning under Will Eisner and Harvey Kurtzman at the School of Visual Art and Holmstrom's background helped define the look and feel of PUNK from the start. The first issue, with Holmstrom's indelible Lou Reed cover, set the pace. As Jon Savage described: "Its cover story was an interview with Lou Reed about his current record METAL MACHINE MUSIC, but, instead of a photo, there was a wickedly accurate cartoon of Reed as metal man: the feature inside was not typeset but told in fumetti. 'I wanted to see something new in comics,' says Holmstrom, 'it fitted the music. Johnny Ramone would always wear cartoon logo T-shirts.' In issue number one of PUNK, the surrounding artwork is as important as important as Reed's insults [...] When the interviewers follow Reed down the block, there they are in cartoons. The effect was both immediate and distanced, a formal innovation on par with MAD magazine" (ENGLAND'S DREAMING p. 132). This fumetti technique (which Holmstrom almost certainly picked up from Kutzman's HELP! magazine) would be utilized throughout PUNK'S tenure and was one of its signatures. Indeed, the comic served in no small part as the blueprint for the visual vocabulary of the magazine. And in addition to Holmstrom, the periodical wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salman Rushdie
Knopf, 1980. stained wraps, yet book still relatively sharp and tight; clean interior. Quite rare pre-publication uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition of Salman Rushdie's Man Booker Prize-winning (indeed, "Booker of Bookers") "Midnight's Children", published by Knopf in 1981 (though this proof lists the copyright as 1980). This is a nice association copy, in that it was distinguished essayist and critic Luc Sante's copy, and includes his ownership signature to the half-title page and ex-libris stamp to the title page. I've listed the book's overall condition as only good primarily due to the staining and soiling of the external card covers and page edges. That aside, the condition would be closer to very good: the edges and corners are still quite sharp and the binding is relatively tight. The covers have a small tear at the bottom front of the spine and a small cryptic note on the back panel. Internally, aside from the previous ownership marks mentioned, there is what appears to be a phone number written in pen at the bottom of the last blank page. Otherwise, the internal text pages and insides of the wrap covers are clean and free of marks. Laid in at the front is a cut out piece of paper containing what was likely intended to be some portion of the jacket copy. I believe this was at one time--if not originally--stapled to the inside cover. A nice copy of an edition hardly ever seen on the market, all the more unique for its ownership history. Please review all the images, and don't hesitate to send questions. [Attributes: First Edition]
