Salman Rushdie
Knopf, 1980. stained wraps, yet book still relatively sharp and tight; clean interior. Quite rare pre-publication uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition of Salman Rushdie's Man Booker Prize-winning (indeed, "Booker of Bookers") "Midnight's Children", published by Knopf in 1981 (though this proof lists the copyright as 1980). This is a nice association copy, in that it was distinguished essayist and critic Luc Sante's copy, and includes his ownership signature to the half-title page and ex-libris stamp to the title page. I've listed the book's overall condition as only good primarily due to the staining and soiling of the external card covers and page edges. That aside, the condition would be closer to very good: the edges and corners are still quite sharp and the binding is relatively tight. The covers have a small tear at the bottom front of the spine and a small cryptic note on the back panel. Internally, aside from the previous ownership marks mentioned, there is what appears to be a phone number written in pen at the bottom of the last blank page. Otherwise, the internal text pages and insides of the wrap covers are clean and free of marks. Laid in at the front is a cut out piece of paper containing what was likely intended to be some portion of the jacket copy. I believe this was at one time--if not originally--stapled to the inside cover. A nice copy of an edition hardly ever seen on the market, all the more unique for its ownership history. Please review all the images, and don't hesitate to send questions. [Attributes: First Edition]

HEINECKEN, Robert
Chicago: A Chicago Book, 1980. Oblong (5.25 x 8 inches). Color reproductions of six of Heinecken's SX-70 Polaroid images of couples; the text on lined paper mimicing index cards. Spiral bound. A near-fine copy with a few creases to front wrapper. Item #405069 ISBN: 0918914108 LIMITED FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER RALPH GIBSON on the title, and with Gibson's ex-libris stamp on inner front wrapper. Laid-in is a mimeo note from Heinecken dated April 1980: "Enclosed as a gift for you is a small book I recently completed. As you proudly show the book to your friends, colleagues and parents you could mention that they can find their own copy in their mailbox by sending me $10.00 / If this package did not protect the book, please let me know. / The numbered [crossed out] edition for sale is 500 and approximately another 100 like yours are floating around." A wonderful association copy, as Gibson is noted for his own exceptional series of photobooks, having created over 40 of his own. Heinecken was a leading conceptual photographer of his generation, calling himself at times a "paraphotographer" because so many of his works were made without a camera and through appropriation. Burroughs, William S
New York [but: Barnstable, Mass.]: Holt, Rinehart and Winston [Crane Duplicating Service], [1980]. First edition, uncorrected long galley proofs. [4], 266 pp. 1 vols. Tall narrow 8vo. Inscribed Proof. Perhaps Burroughs' finest novel after Naked Lunch, Cities of the Red Night intercuts a detective novel plot with scenes in the ill-fated pirate colony of Captain Mission on Madagascar with acerbic wit and visionary imagery. The proof bears on its cover and title page a darkly ironic subtitle, "A Boy's Book", not present in the published book. Presented by the author to Victor Bockris: "For Victor Bockris with all best wishes and friendship, William S. Burroughs October 23, 1980". Lavender wrappers. Some fading and scuffing. Very good plus, sound.Inscribed by the author on the title page.

Vintage original film script, UK. London: Lycanthrope Films Ltd., 1980. Shooting script for the 1981 film. From the collection of still photographer Bob Willoughby, with his ownership name in holograph blue ink on the distribution page. Â Bob Willoughby (1927-2009) studied with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, worked as a photographer for magazines such as LIFE, LOOK and HARPER'S BAZAAR and as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Â Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s (this was one of his final films), though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. Â (Director John) Landis was fresh off his previous year's production THE BLUES BROTHERS when he directed this Academy Award-winning (Best Makeup) horror thriller about two Americans, David and Jack (Naughton and Dunne), backpacking in England. One night they are attacked by a mysterious creature, a werewolf, leaving Jack dead and David wounded. Soon David's nightmares depicting his dead friend warning that he'll soon become a werewolf begin to get the better of him, and arouse suspicion amongst the locals. The film also contains one of cinema's best man-to-monster transformations, similar in effect to Joe Dante's THE HOWLING (also 1981), and expands on a plot that began in 1941 with George Waggner's THE WOLF MAN. Black wrappers with title printed in white on cover and spine, with photographically illustrated dust jacket and red and white printed obi. Photographs by Kohei Yoshiyuki. Interview with the artist (in Japanese) by Nobuyoshi Araki. 112 pp., with 74 black-and-white, full-bleed gravure plates and additional reference illustrations. 10-1/8 x 8-3/8 inches. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006). ] From Parr and Badger: "The abstract, somewhat inexplicit nature of [Document Kouen (Document Park)] raises few issues regarding the depiction of sex, but it does generate a whole slew of questions concerning voyeurism, privacy and stalking. It may indeed be considered a documentary book about sexual practices rather than a sex book in itself, although the voyeuristic nature of the images feeds back into both what is going on and how it was documented. To make the book, Yoshiyuki trawled the Shinjuku and Yoyogi parks in Tokyo, both notorious for nocturnal sexual activity, and photographed the 'goings-on' with infrared flash, which enabled him to get images in the dark without the flash being visible. One suspects that this was done less for reasons of concealment and more for the brittle, indeterminate aesthetic produced, for these seem to be semi-public events, with more voyeuristic spectators than people actually taking part in the various sexual activities...The book is divided into three parts--firstly heterosexual activities, foll … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vintage original film script, UK. London: Handmade Films, 1980. Shooting script for the 1981 British fantasy/adventure film TIME BANDITS, the third film to be directed by Terry Gilliam, based on an original screenplay by Gilliam and fellow MONTY PYTHON alumnus Michael Palin, with a cast that would be quite a bit more expensive today than it was then, including Palin, John Cleese, Sean Connery, Ian Holm, Ralph Richardson and Shelley Duvall. Script belonging to British character actor Derek Lamden, with his name in holograph pencil at the top of the title page. Â Â Gilliam's follow-up to MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, a dark, irreverent comedy disguised as a family adventure, in which a young boy travels with a group of dwarves through time and encounters various historical figures, including an entertainment-starved Napoleon (Holm), a powerful Agamemnon (Connery), and a surprisingly stuffy Robin Hood (Cleese). Nominated for 5 Saturn Awards and 1 Hugo Award. Â Â This screenplay by MONTY PYTHON alumni, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin, is titled THE TIME BANDITS. The released film was titled simply TIME BANDITS. The film, Gilliam's second as a solo director (he codirected with Terry Jones the 1975 MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL) was a huge hit in the United States ($42.4 million on a budget of $5 million) and established Gilliam as a major filmmaker. It was produced by the Beatles' George Harrison through his company, HandMade Films. Â Â For writer/director Gilliam, this was the first film in what he would later refer to as his "Trilogy of Imagination." TIME BANDITS (1981) v … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lavin, Irving;Pierpont Morgan Library
[Published for] Pierpont Morgan Library [by] Oxford University Press, 1980. Complete 2 volume set consisting of Text and Plates. Both are oversized hardcovers. The Text volume is very good with shelfwear and bumped corners. Its dust jacket is good plus with some soiling to the front inner flap, rubbing and edgewear (including a small tear). The Plates volume is an ex-college library book with most of the usual markings to the book, but none to the jacket. Otherwise, the book appears lightly used and is near very good with sheflwear and bumped corners. The dust jacket is very good with rubbing, edgewear and light creasing. A nice example of a very scarce set. This book cannot be shipped to Canada or Russia. Expedited international shipping is not available. The delivery expectation for international shipping is 7-32 business days, depending upon customer location. . Hard Cover. Good/Good. Ex-Library.

1980. INSURED MEDIA MAIL SHIPPING IN A BOX MARILYNNE ROBINSON HOUSEKEEPING PAPERBOUND ADVANCE REVIEW COPY (PRECEDING HARDBOUND FIRST PRINTING) FSG (1980) Housekeeping is a novel by Marilynne Robinson, published in 1980. The novel was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (which Robinson would eventually win for her second novel, Gilead), and awarded the PEN/Hemingway Award for best first novel. In 2003, the Guardian Unlimited named Housekeeping one of the 100 greatest novels of all time, describing the book as "Haunting, poetic story, drowned in water and light, about three generations of women." Time magazine also included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. Ruthie narrates the story of how she and her younger sister Lucille are raised by a succession of relatives in the fictional town of Fingerbone, Idaho (some details are similar to Robinson's hometown, Sandpoint, Idaho). Eventually their aunt Sylvie (who has been living as a transient) comes to take care of them. At first the three are a close knit group, but as Lucille grows up she comes to dislike their eccentric lifestyle and moves out. When Ruthie's well-being is questioned by the courts, Sylvie returns to life on the road and takes Ruthie with her. The novel treats the subject of housekeeping, not only in the domestic sense of cleaning, but in the larger sense of keeping a spiritual home for one's self and family in the face of loss, for the girls experience a series of abandonments as they come of age. The events take place in an uncertain time, in that no dates are me … [Click Below for Full Description]

China: 1980. Very Good. Hardcover. Quarto. Measuring 9" x 11" A photo album with a thin basket weave design over the stiff paper boards. Contains 125 color photographs measuring 3.5" x 4.5," with very few captions. Slight waviness on the boards and edgewear thus very good with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a woman traveling in China for about nine months in 1980, between January and September. While there are almost no captions the verso of most of the photos have a month and day written on them. The photos are of the usual tourist sights around Beijing including the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, and the Temple of Heaven. These photos show the woman, who is a middle-aged blonde woman, posing by the landmarks with other members of a tour group as well as Chinese people. Also included in the album are two newspaper clippings about New York Mayor Koch's trip to China in 1980, whether there is any connection to that trip is unclear. She also photographed the local Chinese people. One of these photos shows a woman with a megaphone in Tiananmen Square who later poses with the compiler of the album. Other photos show children playing, people in a market, Chinese officials in uniform, and numerous people on bicycles (the bicycles in Beijing so impressed Mayor Koch that he implemented bike lanes in New York upon returning from his trip). The group also visited the waterways of the area and photographed numerous ships which included those with beautiful decorative sails. Additionally there are also photos of the group trying local cuisine as well as photos of … [Click Below for Full Description]
