Mikhail Bulgakov
c. 1980. 4to (8 x 12 in.) in contemporary maroon buckram boards with thread stitching. 229 pp. Very good condition, minor wear to boards but clean inside. Item #4141 The Master and Margarita is one of the most essential works of Soviet satire. Bulgakov wrote the novel between 1928 and 1940, restarting it many times before his death in 1940, burning the first copy, and later leaving the novel mostly complete but still missing parts. A heavily censored version was first published in Moscow Magazine in 1967. The official publication arrived in 1989 and would not have been possible without the publication and distribution of samizdats such as this one. While Samizdat was initially produced by hand or typewriter, this copy was printed using a computer and captures the fascinating juncture of Soviet dissident practices and digital technology. Beginning in the late 1970s, during the early days of computing, employees at institutions in the Soviet Union managed to print banned texts using line (or drum) printers, usually during night shifts as the use of duplication technology was tightly controlled by the state. By the 1980s, such printers produced text at a rate of several hundred lines per minute. The files containing the texts could be moved from mainframe to mainframe using magnetic tape.

Contents are housed in an extravagant handmade plywood book, hinged and bolted along the spine gutter. Gregory Corso
A two-part poem penned by Gregory Corso for his friend Fred Martin, Managing Editor at New Directions. Apocryphally at least, Corso "writ out" the poem for Martin at a bibulous evening at one of New York's watering holes. In his time at New Directions, Martin worked with Corso, as well as Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. "Metaphor" is a variation on Corso's poem "Piffle", published in 1980 -- the same year the poem was "writ out for Fred Martin." Shortly thereafter, following the assassination of John Lennon, the poem was reworked and retitled "For John Lennon." Corso's practice seems to have been constantly to re-write, revise, and recycle his poems, perhaps to fit the occasion.

William Everson
Boston: Published by Anne & David Bromer Designed & Printed by R. Bigus, 1980. Condition: Fine - Signed. Letter U of 26 lettered copies on vellum, broadside, signed and inscribed by William Everson. A beautiful hand illuminated broadside poem by William Everson (1912-1994), also known as Brother Antoninus, a name he adopted during his sixteen years serving as a Dominican monk. Everson's poetry is deeply autobiographical and inspired by the California landscape; he is known for his observations of both the beauty and violence of the natural world as it clashes with man's progress. Everson pre-dates the Beats, but was a recognized member of Kenneth Rexroth's circle; he was praised by Rexroth throughout his career and is considered an essential contributor to the San Francisco literary Renaissance that would become the Beat movement - he would later be known as the Beat-friar. This broadside was made while he was the poet-in-residence at UC Santa Cruz, during a time when he was doing a great deal of small press work. DESCRIPTION: Broadside printed on vellum, two illuminated and hand-colored initials, with a hand-illuminated maple leaf border, 45 lines of text, 18" by 14", signed to the recto by Everson, hand written limitation/colophon to verso, additionally inscribed by Everson to verso: "For (Roy/Ray?), William Everson, Nov 1, 1981, Los Angeles", limited edition, letter 'U' of 26 lettered copies. CONDITION: Fine, the vellum clean, the colours and gilt bright and unrubbed, totally free of edgewear and soiling; on the verso at the top two corners are two old pieces of cloth ta … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gustave Baumann
Condition: Fine in Fine dust jacket. Los Angeles, CA: William & Victoria Dailey. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1980. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Yellow boards covered with black wood block print. Pastedown label on cover and spine. Boards are clean with slight wear at edges of spine. Boards are slightly bowed, but binding is square and tight. Very light soiling to top edge of text block, but interior is clean. Cream dust jacket with light brown wood block print. Very light soiling to rear edges of dust jacket. Hand-printed by Patrick Reagh from Gustave Baumann's original blocks in an edition of 250, this volume is numbered 48. This edition from William & Victoria Dailey is a gorgeously designed reprint of the very rare 1939 original. The green decorative endpapers feature Gustave Baumann woodcuts not used in the original publication; they are seen here for the first time. German-born Gustave Baumann was an influential American printmaker and key figure in the color woodcut revival. This series of prints, based upon pictographs found in Frijoles Canyon (within Bandolier National Monument) , illustrate the deep love and respect that Baumann felt for the Southwest. They clearly represent the pictographs, while still showing Baumann's hand. Primarily single-color, there are three tri-color prints included, including a monumental four-page fold-out image. The prints and images are further contextualized by lyrical essays from both Baumann and preeminent archaeologist Alfred Vincent Kidder.; Book; Wood block print; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 22 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacke … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gustave Baumann
William & Victoria Dailey, 1980. Condition: Fine / fine. No. 90 of 250, octavo size, [43] pp. Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) was a German-American printmaker and painter, one of the leading figures in the revival of colour woodcuts; he spent a great part of his life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, creating work depicting southwestern landscapes, pueblo life, and ancient Native American petroglyphs. This volume is a collection of woodcuts by Baumann, copied from the pictographs found in the caves on the Pajarito Plateau of northern New Mexico, dating from 1150-1500 CE. Baumann faithfully recreates the pictographs from the caves in woodcuts; the pictographs have, over time, been defaced by wind and rain and by the vandalism of tourists, leaving these prints to serve as an archeological record. The woodcuts are printed from the original blocks cut by Baumann in 1939, and the woodcuts on the dust jacket are printed here for the first time. Included also is a foreword by Alfred Vincent Kidder (1885-1963), a leading American archaeologist specialising in the southwestern U.S. and Mesoamerica, who offers insight into the archaeological ramifications of the caves and pictographs. This publication was printed for William and Victoria Dailey, renowned antiquarian bookdealers and owners of the Press of the Pegacycle Lady, by Patrick Reagh (b.1948), son of Los Angeles photographer William Reagh, who has printed numerous fine press editions at his own imprint. Mars & Static Kling
New York: 1980. Condition: Near Fine. Approximate 29 x 17", paste-up pasted down onto a glassine overlay, tipped onto a matte backing onto which is pasted up the artwork for the back cover of the EP; profuse holograph notes and printer instructions in holograph at margins of glassine and matte. Cover matte hinged on, with title in holograph. Some creasing to board and minor wear; near fine. Mars was one of the earliest No Wave projects, formed by Sumner Crane in 1975 under the name China. The band released only one single during their lifetime before breaking up in 1978; this EP, their most significant recording, was released by the band two years later. Despite being short-lived, the band remains one of the most important of the No Wave movement, and appeared on the arbitrarily canonizing No New York EP. The artwork is credited on the official release to the band and to Statik Kling, who also did the great cover art for the Holland River Dive EP.

Baillie, Bruce (founder); Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas, Bruce Connor, Hollis Frampton, Paul Sharits, et al (contributors)
California: Canyon Cinema, 1980. Archive of 66 issues of "Canyon Cinemanews," the newsletter printed by film collective and distributor Canyon Cinema, with issues variously published between 1966 and 1980. Most of the issues bear the address labels (both New York and Ohio) of experimental filmmaker and video artist Jud Yalkut. Issues of "Cinemanews" appear to be scarce or more so, and assembling a collection of this size, including a number of sequential runs, nearly impossible. Begun in 1962, "Canyon Cinemanews" sought to highlight information about films and filmmakers not generally available to the public in a democratic fashion, encouraging contributions from anyone interested in cinema, and, unlike other periodicals chronicling independent film, without an overarching critical perspective, other than a focus on experimental over mainstream film, and a preference for new or newly available films. Each issue presents a detailed picture of what was happening in American underground and avant garde film at the time of publication, including lists of upcoming film festivals, often with contact information for entries, schedules of screenings and exhibitions from around the country, lists of distributors interested in acquiring short films, catalogs of films available for exhibition, not only from Canyon Cinema, but other distributors and even individual filmmakers, and announcements by individual filmmakers detailing information about new and in-progress films. In addition to providing a researchable catalog of dates and locations regarding the creation and exhibitio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Furie, Sidney J. (director); Frank De Felitta (screenwriter);
Twentieth Century-Fox. Archive of seven scripts for the 1982 film. Included is a first draft, third draft, four undated drafts, and one draft under the working title "Carlotta: A Haunted Lady." Two scripts with holograph notations present. From the estate of Frank De Felitta. Based on the 1978 novel of the same name about a real case of an alleged haunting. In 1974, Culver City, Doris Bither claimed the ghosts of three men were raping her. De Felitta was present during the investigation with lead researcher and parapsychologist Dr. Barry Taff who served as technical advisor on "The Entity" as well as being represented in the film by the character, Gene Kraft. "The Entity" is one of the few possession films that ends with White Science and Black Magic in a draw. Critics of the time dismissed the film, but it still became something of a cult classic that evoked "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist." Screenwriter Frank De Felitta was born 1921 in the Bronx. He served as a pilot right out of high school in WWII and returned to New York in 1945 where he began writing scripts. His first produced work was for the radio thriller series, "The Whistler," and once established, he turned to television writing, producing and directing documentaries, receiving Emmy nominations in 1963 and 1968. By the early 70's De Felitta was working on film scripts with author Max Ehrlich. His first novel "Oktoberfest" (1973) was a thriller that made him enough money to finance time needed to write the bestseller horror story about reincarnation, the hit film "Audrey Rose" (1975) and later its sequel, " … [Click Below for Full Description]
